a/n: this chapter's sakura is kind of a combo of canon!sakura and my hunger!sakura.
"teenager - meet cute [+ extras]"
.
khr universe, first day of middle school - kyouya is a second year and sakura & friends are first years.
The Demon Prefect of Namimori Middle School, Hibari Kyouya, was blushing.
Everyone crowded in the frozen courtyard stared in a horrified state of awed disbelief. The school bell rung.
Nobody moved.
A once in a lifetime event was occurring before them, like an eclipse that only happened every million years or something equally reverent, and breaking the silence, even daring to breathe, would ruin the moment. (It would also draw Hibari's ire— no one wanted that —because when he eventually realized school was now technically in session and so many students weren't in class... it would not be good, not good at all.) Luckily for them, Hibari was a bit preoccupied.
His attention was solely focused on the girl in front of him. She was tiny. If it weren't for the thick-soled heels of her black lace-up platform shoes, the top of her head would have barely reached Hibari's shoulder. As it were, with the shoes, she was a bit above his eye level.
"Cute," he mumbled.
It was heard clearly by everyone present. A faint "HIEEE?" instantly went up in the distance and reactions ranged from bewildered— "Cute, he called her cute. He never says that about humans!" —to terrified— "We should not BE HERE. We've got to get out of here, now. Now!" before they were worriedly hushed by the rest of the crowd as they continued to attentively watch the show.
Hibari looked almost shy as he ducked his head and peeked up at her through his bangs. His hands twitched, he wanted to pat her head. He squeezed his tonfas tightly instead, palms suddenly sweaty. His cheeks were stained pink, the same cherry blossom color as the girl's short hair hanging loose and pin-straight sleek at her shoulders. Stray hairs were pushed back and off her forehead with a red headband, exposing a perfectly center purple diamond tattoo above her wide green eyes.
A flush crawled down her neck to where she wore the boy's tie instead of the girl's bow and a red ribbon wound around her throat. The jacket was buttoned close, knee-length sports shorts were under her neatly-pressed pleat skirt, and she had white socks primly pulled up her calves. Everything together resulted in a sharp practical look.
Despite the possible misdemeanors dyed hair, a facial tattoo, and uniform modifications amounted to, Hibari appeared to have no intention on doling out a punishment. Content, instead, to simply watch her glance down and toe the tip of one clunky shoe into the ground while biting her lip.
A boy, blonde and blue-eyed, behind her stared in shock, mouth falling open at the sight. He wore a girl's bow beneath the unbuttoned white collar of his shirt and nudged the tall dark-haired boy at his side.
"Eh, are you seeing this, teme!?"
"... Hn."
"Right? Sakura-chan always likes pretty bastards!" he whistled. "Wait 'till I tell 'Kashi you've got a crush, Sakura-chan!"
"Sakura-chan" whipped around and scowled at the boy. She cracked her knuckles and shook her fist threateningly, "He'll never believe you, Naruto."
Hibari tilted his head. Everyone, except for the arguing trio, collectively tensed, thinking the spell had been lifted and ready to run for their lives.
"He sure will because it's true and everyone knows it!" "Naruto" stuck his tongue out at her and let out an obnoxious bray of laughter. Hibari didn't even flinch at the loud sound, the rest of them did though at his lack of reaction.
She stomped toward the blonde boy, shoes making a menacing thud with each step. He paled instantly and tried to hide behind the tall dark-haired boy who took one look at him, gave an amused grunt and shoved him towards "Sakura-chan."
"No, wait, Sasuke-temeeee—"
A powerful blow sent him flying back with an enraged shout and both middle fingers directed towards the dark-haired "Sasuke-teme" boy that betrayed him. Hibari looked at "Sakura-chan." Her fist was still angrily reared back and she stood straight, red-faced and triumphant. His eyes narrowed in interest before his face softened even more, harsh features relaxing.
"They're perfect for each other."
The lone, fearful whisper sparked a frenzy of panicked chatter.
Someone fainted. Then another person did. And another. And another. The boxing club captain dove to catch them all. He held them in a dramatic, suspended dip before yanking them up onto his broad shoulders and grabbing the next person with an "EXTREME!" shout.
People ran. Self-preservation finally kicking in, they declared blankly, "I'm out," spun around, and didn't look back. Several students shrieked— "I TOLD YOU WE NEEDED TO LEAVE," —before their hyperventilating friends— "Two of them, there's two of them," —clamped a hand over their mouths and dragged them down to flop sadly, but quietly, onto the ground.
Of course, there were also those who embraced the danger or were simply obliviously unaware. A member of the film club had their phone out and was recording the two main characters' standoff. The advisor of the club was directing a crew to set up lights and cameras to capture the scene from all 360 degree angles. Snacks and drinks were being sold and purchased as students settled on pillows and piled under the distributed blankets.
Hibari graciously ignored them all, intent gaze on "Sakura-chan." She turned back to him, went a deeper shade of red, and then jerked her chin up.
"Name's Haruno Sakura."
Silence.
The full weight of everyone's focus shifted to her pink hair. Someone in the crowd muttered, "Well, that's on the nose."
The tip of Haruno's nose twitched and she sent a glare in the general direction the comment came from. Everyone sweat-dropped and reverted to good stone statues that didn't want to be punched into space— the blonde boy still hadn't returned — or hit to death with a pair of tonfas. Hibari nodded in silent agreement to the crowd's understanding. His blush was still present, but beginning to fade.
"Hibari Kyouya."
Haruno shivered at the sound of his voice. She sniffed and rubbed her nose nonchalantly, shoving her trembling hands into her pockets. Oddly, she didn't have the desire to shank him in the kidney with one of her knives. She looked away, then glowered down at him, directly into his blue eyes.
"Pretty."
Everyone exchanged bewildered, incredulous looks. What was happening? They nodded to non-verbally verify with each other that yes, they heard correctly, she had just called Hibari pretty, to his face. Insanity confirmed, they turned back expectantly to Hibari, waiting for him to finally whip out his tonfas (the crowd shared a frightened mental snicker) or do something.
He blushed again.
Haruno smirked at him, cheeks a full pink and teeth bared.
"Figured since we're making single-word statements about the other and I've been thinking it this whole time, I should say mine for you. You're pretty," she repeated. "And they're," she waved a careless hand at their audience without taking her wild eyes off him, "scared of you."
She took a deliberate step forward. "I want to know why."
He smiled. It was a terrible, terrible, terrible thing.
"KISS!"
They froze.
"I ship it!" someone called. "Sasuke-teme" pulled out a "Haruno + Hibari = 💖 4ever" flag and started waving it limply with dead eyes and a mean, little smile. Emboldened at the thought of a possible romance between two people in the midst of exchanging their fifth line of dialogue, a passionate chant was started. "KISS KISS KISS acK— !"
The crowd sank back into their seats, effectively cowed by the reminder of who they were dealing with. Noisy distraction taken care of, Haruno and Hibari turned back to more important things, like each other.
And fighting.
And fighting each other.
He brandished his tonfas.
A small pair of brass knuckles slid over her fingers.
They fought.
It was a good fight.
They were both exhausted and grinning madly by the end, but Hibari still bit everyone who stayed to watch to death— "Sasuke-teme" and "Naruto," when he finally made his way back, weren't spared —then, hunted down the ones who had fled and bit them to death. Lastly, he escorted a limping Haruno to class with a broken arm and only one tonfa on his person. Her skirt and jacket sleeve were ripped, had both her shoes but was strangely missing a sock, and was very late to class.
The teacher took one look at the two of them and marked Haruno Sakura's attendance as present.
...
"I'm definitely telling 'Kashi about this."
"Shut up, Naruto."
"Hn."

notes:
my heart is warm, i love this chapter. soft sakura and kyouya are still violent mofos lmao. 💖
.
also, just to be clear, this isn't intended to be romantic. sakura & kyouya don't view their interaction that way. pretty (& powerful) people are for sakura what small animals are for kyouya. they find the other cute in an admiring, "aww" way and, true to character, have no problem blurting that out in public. when they then see each other's violent nature 👀, their interest grows even more, but it's not in a "crush" way like how naruto is teasing.
.
i dislike those big floppy girl's uniform bows. sakura swapped ties with naruto, who unlike me and sakura, thought the bow was pretty and actually wanted to wear it. (they both wore their prospective ties well.)
no-massacre au sasuke would wear his tie properly like a good prep boy. massacre-canon sasuke foregoes the tie because he's a rebel. orochimaru's fashion influence had him all about open-chested shirts and freeing his collarbones. up to you to decide which version you want to envision for this.
.
based off the assumption that canon!sakura has a type for pretty (angsty) boys and my headcanon that hunger!sakura is drawn to powerful pretty people, combined with the knowledge that hibari has a soft spot for animals and small, cute things, this delightful meeting idea was born.
.
if you have any haruno + hibari ideas or prompts lmk and maybe i'll write them!
