I don't own any of these characters but I love to write about them. Here's my take on what happened when Edward came home from the West. In the official guide, it says they got married the same year that Edward went out West so he wasn't out there for very long though he probably was traveling back and forth.
Edward was in the West doing research for the past 3 months. He had made good friends that also helped him with it. He and Winry had been writing back and forth to each other. The letters consisted of little daily things and checking up on each other. However, the last letter Edward had received had some sad news, and he knew that she was upset. Phone calls were not cheap but he knew that this situation warranted it.
It was late in the evening but not too late. Edward dialed the familiar number, and Winry answered but not in her usual cheerful tone. "Hey Winry, it's me." "Edward! I can't believe you're calling." "Well, I got your letter today." "Oh," Winry already felt the tears welling up in her eyes. Edward continued "I'm sorry about Den. He was a great dog, and you gave him the best life." Winry started sobbing. Edward wanted to be there and hold her but instead he was in another country hundreds of miles away. "Oh Winry. I'm sorry. I wish I was there." Winry sniffled and took a few deep breaths to try to gain control of her emotions. "You know you can always call me when you're upset," Edward told her. Winry sniffled and replied "I know but you're really busy with your research." "Don't worry about my research. You're important, too. Okay?" "Yeah, okay." Winry smiled a sad smile. She was happy that he called even if it was about a sad event. They talked some more until Winry was ready to go to bed.
Two weeks later, Winry was waiting at the train station for Edward. He was coming home after spending almost four months doing research. He said his leg needed a tune up, and it was getting stiff. The train pulled into the station. Her heart beat faster with anticipation. She had missed him, especially since she was still sad about losing her loyal companion. She saw him disembark, and their eyes locked onto each other. He put his bag down, and they embraced each other. Then she surprised him by kissing him on the lips. She needed affection, and he pressed back. They pulled apart.
"Welcome home!" she said happily. "It's good to be back. Oh, I got something for you but they wouldn't let me carry it up front." He took his bag and lead her towards the back of the train. Winry wondered if it was something too big, like a large amount of metal that she could use for her automail. Edward spoke to a train attendant, and the attendant went into a cart and Edward followed after setting his bag next to Winry. She was perplexed but she liked a surprise.
Winry's eyes went large, and a larger smile lit up her face as Edward walked out of the cart carrying a small black and white puppy. "She's for you," Edward said as he handed her the squirming ball of fur. "Oh, she's so cute!" Winry snuggled the puppy and laughed as the puppy licked her face. "Remember Lieutenant Hawkeye? Her dog had puppies, and she was trying to find homes for them. I figured we could give her a good home." Winry was still giggling as the puppy squirmed in her arms. "Of course, we can. Thank you, Ed. Alright girl, let us get you home." Edward took a leash from his coat pocket and helped get it around the puppy's neck so they could walk home.
Granny was outside smoking her pipe watching for the young couple to walk up to the house. She could make them out but could also see Winry being pulled by something. "Granny look what Ed got me! Isn't she cute?!" Winry said as she got up to the porch. The puppy greeted Granny with enthusiasm. "Oh my! Look at you." The puppy was jumping on her, and she petted. Even she got a smile on her face. Winry took the puppy inside to help get it settled. Edward greeted Granny and before he went inside, Granny told him "You know Winry hasn't smiled like that since before Den died. I'm glad you could help bring back her smile." Edward's cheeks turned pink, and his hand went behind his head. "Oh well, I just was trying to help a friend find a home for her puppy, and Winry likes dogs so it just seemed to work out perfectly." He went inside to find Winry. He was glad that he could help bring back her cheerful attitude. After all, who wouldn't love to have a cute puppy?
The next day, Edward and WInry were outside sitting on the steps playing with the puppy. Edward was throwing a ball and trying to get her to bring it back. "Have you thought of a name yet?" Edward asked her. "Hmmm…. I was thinking maybe Eva or Lily. What was Ms. Hawkeye's dogs name?" Winry asked. "Black Hayate. Don't ask. I don't know the story behind that." Edward replied. Winry debated. "I think I'll name her Eva," Winry decided. "Sounds good. Eva it is." Edward put his arm around Winry, and she moved closer to him. "Ed, I need to go into town to get some dog food and bowls for her. You wanna come?" "Sure." "Eva, come here girl. Let's go to town to get you a few things," Winry called her over, and the puppy came to her. Edward smirked. "I think she believes her name is 'Girl'." Winry giggled. "Yeah, that's what we've been calling her. She'll learn." Winry put a leash on her to take her into town until the puppy was more familiar with its new home.
Edward greeted the neighbors, and WInry showed them her new puppy. All the neighbors knew Den and were happy to see that Winry had a new companion. They got the puppy's essential items and made it home just before the rain came. Eva had worn herself out, and was sleeping on an old towel that Winry had laid down for her. Ed and Winry were sitting next to each other on the couch listening to the rain. "I'm glad you're home. And I really like my surprise. Thank you for bringing her home with you." "Ummm. Yeah, you're welcome. She needed a home." Winry leaned up and kissed Edward. Winry then settled into his chest and said "Now we just have to plan a wedding." Edward didn't move but had a shocked look on his face. 'Oh crap, that's right!'. He rubbed his forehead with his free hand. Winry comforted him. "Let's not start planning today. I'd rather take a nap listening to the rain right now." "Sounds good to me." And they fell asleep on the couch together.
