A few days after Edward and Winry returned, Winry heard the phone ring. She promptly answered it expecting it to a client. "Hi Winry, it's Riza Hawkeye. I'm so sorry for the short notice but I have a favor to ask." Winry looked surprised. She wasn't expecting Riza to call her. Her and Edward had a few dinners with Riza and Roy while in Central so they had grown closer over the past few months.
"Oh sure. What is it?" Winry asked.
"Well, we are being shipped over near West City, and I need someone to watch my dog, Black Hayate while I'm gone. Would you be willing to?" Riza asked. "I'm sorry about this but I'm not sure how long I'll be gone for."
Winry didn't even need to think it over. "Of course, I'll watch him. He's such a good dog. Though we may make him into a country dog before you get home," Winry chuckled.
"That'll be fine. I'm sure some fresh air and exercise will do him well," Riza replied. They talked over the details of the train ride and a short stay along with Black Hayate's care. Riza then asked "Well how was your honeymoon?"
Winry suddenly got quiet, and her face turned sad. "Well, it was great until we got back. You see, Ed and Al were drafted, and they leave in a few weeks."
Riza was shocked. But when the surprise faded, Riza realized how depressed Winry was. "Winry, I'm sorry this happened. I know those two have been through so much already. Are you okay?" Riza could hear Winry trying to hold in her tears. Winry tried to reassure her that she would be okay. Riza told her she would bring the dog in a few days.
About 30 minutes later, the phone rang again. Winry answered again, surprised at the amount of calls she was getting that day. "Hello Ms. Rockbell, I mean Mrs. Elric. Sorry, old habit. Is Edward there?" asked Roy. Riza must have called him.
Winry called for Edward, and he came up from the basement. He had been lifting weights with Al. He took the phone but Winry wouldn't tell him who it was. "This is Edward."
"Why didn't you tell me that you had been drafted?!" Mustang yelled at him. Edward had to hold the phone away from his ear.
Edward yelled back "I've only been home a few days! What did you expect me to do? Come crying to you?" Edward waited for a comeback but didn't get any. "I guess news travels fast, huh?" Edward said solemnly.
Mustang put his hand to his face. Even though Edward was an adult, he was sometimes still aggravating to speak with. "Well Edward, I just need you to trust me. You can always call if you need something."
Edward was surprised at this. "Well, I didn't think you could do anything about it." That part was true but Edward also didn't want to bother Mustang, and didn't want to use his military ties to get out of duty.
"I won't be able to stop the draft but I might be able to do a few other things that would make it easier. When do you report?" Mustang asked. Edward gave Mustang the details of the draft letter, and Mustang told him what items to pack. "Make sure you bring your own towel. The military provides some but they don't last long and there's only so many to go around." Edward chuckled at that. They ended their call when Edward assured him that he would let Winry help him pack.
Thank you for the reviews. I was planning on having Mustang and his team in there but after the last review, I wanted to throw some parental in there. I hope you like it!
