Three weeks after Edward and Winry returned, they spent as much time together as possible. When Winry had to work, Edward would be training with Alphonse so their bodies would be ready. While Winry had been working very hard on a hand for a patient, she started feeling light-headed. She tried to ignore it but it became overwhelming. She stepped outside and sat on the steps with her head in her hands. The crisp fall air seemed to help her feel better. She could hear the boys sparring.

"Winry, you okay?" Edward asked after he noticed her. He came up to her, and she raised her head. He noticed how pale she looked.

"I feel a little light-headed. I probably just need to eat something," she said.

"Did you even stop to eat lunch? I made you a sandwich."

"Sorry, I haven't even been to the kitchen." He helped her up and made her sit and eat her lunch even though it was 3 in the afternoon.

The next day, Winry woke up and went downstairs to get a head start on the day. She had a patient coming early, and she had woken up too late to make breakfast. As she was working on her patient's hand, she suddenly felt nauseous. She tried to ignore it but had to run to the bathroom. Winry was wondering what was wrong with her but then she realized what it probably was.

The next morning, Edward and Winry went to the doctor. The nurse came out and called her back. Edward got up but the nurse stopped. "Just Mrs. Elric for now. I'll bring you back soon." Edward sighed. He did not like waiting. Fifteen minutes later, he was called back.

When they were alone waiting in the small exam room, he asked her "Why the hell did they make me wait out there?"

Winry glared at him. "You didn't miss much. I had to pee in a cup. And the doctor had to do a pelvic exam on me."

"Pelvic exam?" Edward was confused.

Winry rolled her eyes. "He had to see if my cervix was closed." Edward was more confused but then realized what had happened. He blushed and looked away. "Oh Edward! Don't be so childish. It's not a big deal."

There was a knock on the door, and the doctor came in with a nurse both with a very big smile on their faces. "Congratulations! You are expecting. I am estimating about 6 weeks along. Your due date is June 4th." The doctor and nurse noticed that the couple didn't look thrilled. Winry was tearing up. "Was this not expected?" the doctor asked.

Winry replied "Well sort of. It's just that Ed just got drafted for the military."

Dr Turner nodded in understanding. "Well, when Mr. Elric gets registered, you can apply for family aid from the military. I am more than happy to sign for it," Dr Turner informed them. Winry nodded. Dr Turner turned to Edward "We will take the best care of her while you are gone. I promise. Mrs. Elric, if coming to the clinic is too much, let us know. We can make a home visit." The doctor answered their questions regarding how Winry should take care of herself while in her condition, and they left the office.

After the appointment, they started walking home in silence. Winry stopped and sat on the stone fence. She started crying, and she reached for him. 'I'm going to be going through this alone.' She was terrified. Edward met her arms and hugged her tight. She cried into his shirt until it was moist with her tears but then she heard him sniffling. She looked at his face and noticed the tears that were falling. 'I'm so stupid. I didn't realize that he would be hurt knowing that he's leaving me like this.' She took his face in her hands. "Edward, you are not your father. You're going to write to me and call me. And you're going to come back to me, right?"

Edward frowned at that. "I will do everything I can to come back home as soon as possible. And I'll write to you." She nodded. Edward thought 'I can't promise her that I will come home. There's no guarantee for any soldier.' They collected themselves and continued walking when Edward said "I kind of figured that you were pregnant. Especially after our trip."

Winry giggled a little. "Yeah, we were at it like a couple of rabbits." Edward had a sly grin on his face.

At the dinner table, they sat with Granny, Al, and Mei. She had decided to stay until after Al left since they would only be leaving in 3 weeks. After they ate, Winry spoke before everyone left the table. She took Edward's hand under the table. "Ed and I have something to tell you all. I'm pregnant." Their mouths dropped.

Once the initial shock was over, Granny was the first to speak. "How could you two do this? At a time like this?"

Winry responded. "Grandma, it happened while we were on our honeymoon before we found out about Ed and Al getting drafted."

"But still to bring a child into the world during a war. What were you two thinking?" Granny glared at them

Edward was getting upset because he saw his wife in her delicate condition tearing up. "Granny, we weren't thinking. We just wanted to bring some more happiness into our lives." Winry's heart glowed. Her husband had said something very sincere. Everyone sighed.

Granny finally said "I can see that you two are young and in love. And after all you two have been through, of course you'd want to start a family. Though it might not be practical right now, I'll do what I can to help her while you're gone." Everyone at the table seemed relieved.

Once Granny went to bed, the four young adults started playing card games. Al spoke in between turns "I'm excited. You two are expanding our family, and I get to be an uncle."

Winry replied "Yeah, our families are so small. It'll be nice to add another member to it."

Edward smirked "Maybe when I get back, we can expand it even more."

Winry elbowed his side. "Can we just focus on this one for now?" Al and Mei laughed at their exchange.

Mei spoke up "Well having a really big family can have more problems. There's always some family members that don't get along." The Elrics agreed, knowing that Mei did have family issues that went along with royalty issues also. Mei changed the subject. "So Winry, do you want a boy or a girl?"

"Well, it doesn't matter that much to me. A boy would be nice because he could protect the younger siblings. But a girl could do that to, as long as she has good aim." Al laughed at that and Edward looked annoyed.

Al looked at Edward "What about you brother? Do you want a girl or a boy?"

Before Edward had a chance to answer, his wife spoke up. "Are you kidding? Edward wants a boy."

"Winry! The gender doesn't matter. As long as it's healthy." Winry rolled her eyes. Even though she knew Edward was telling the truth, she also knew he favored having a son just a little more.

After everyone had their fill of card games, they all went to bed. Edward and Winry snuggled under the covers. He spooned her from behind and kissed her shoulder. "I love you Winry."

"I love you, too." She took his hand and kissed it. "Ed, I want you to know I am really happy about this baby."

"Yeah, me too." He took his hand and rubbed her lower abdomen. Winry breathed deeply. It was hard to believe that something was alive inside of her. Her and Edward went to sleep content even after all that had happened that day.
