June 4th, 1918

Mustang and his division were on leave in a nearby town that was north of West City. The team were enjoying their time away from the front line. In between physical training, they hung out at the bar and played darts. Hot showers were also a bonus.

There were also meetings that were being held to keep the team up to date. These mainly included the upper ranks. Then the upper ranks would inform their smaller teams.

General Mustang looked around the room at Captain Hawkeye, First Lieutenant Havoc, First Lieutenant Breda, Warrant Officer Fuery, and Corporal Elric. Mustang looked at Alphonse, who usually wasn't part of these meetings and did a double take. Mustang couldn't believe Edward was skipping out on his duties after being recently promoted. He put his hand to his forehead and asked "Where is Lieutenant Colonel Elric?"

Alphonse saluted "He is unable to attend. He is still waiting in line for phone access."

"The phone?! What could be so important that he would have to miss this?" Mustang questioned growing more irritated.

"Well, sir, it's Winry's due date," Corporal Elric answered.

The whole team perked up. Mustang nodded. "I see. I can't believe we've been here that long. Okay, we'll carry on. Corporal Elric, update him when he returns. And have him report to me when you see him."

"Yes sir!" Corporal Elric replied.

"At ease," General Mustang said. Mustang started on the update that he had received earlier that day.

Meanwhile at the military office with a phone line, Edward tapped his foot impatiently. He grumbled like everyone else that was in line. He looked at his pocket watch. He had been waiting for almost an hour! And he was sure Mustang would be pissed that he was missing a meeting. But he was next in line for the phone, and he needed to call home to make sure that she was okay, and to see if he had become a father yet.

The soldier in front of him hung up and it was finally Edward's turn. He dialed the ever familiar number and listened to it ring four times. Then he heard Granny's voice answer the phone.

"Rockbell automail, this is Pinako," Granny said.

"Granny, it's me! Is Winry okay? Did she have the baby yet? Today is her due date!" he yelled into the phone.

"Calm down Edward. Winry's fine. She had the baby two days ago. She's coming down the stairs now. I'll let her tell you," Granny said. Edward's eyes went wide as he heard the phone being passed.

"Hello?" Winry said. Her voice made his heart melt. It had been a long time since he heard it.

"Winry, it's me! Granny said you had the baby! Are you doing okay? Is the baby okay?" Edward held tightly on to the phone.

"Edward, I'm fine. Just a little sore. The baby's perfectly healthy. It's a little boy," Winry said trying to give him as much information as possible because she knew he was on a time limit.

Edward's stomach leaped into his chest. "It's a boy?! That's awesome Winry! You're incredible, you know that? And he's healthy. That's so awesome."

Winry smiled. She knew he would be thrilled. "Well, he loves to sleep and eat A LOT. I wonder where he gets that from." Edward chuckled at that until there was a lot of shouting and yelling behind him.

"Hold on sweetheart," Edward told her nicely. He turned to the men behind him that were in a shouting match. "SHUT THE FUCK UP! I JUST FOUND OUT I'M A FATHER!"

The men stopped and turned to him. The shouting turned into celebrating for him. Winry could hear the men shouting their congratulations because Edward didn't bother to cover the receiver.

Edward turned his attention back to the phone. The officer in charge of the phone signaled his time was almost up. The soldiers behind Edward urged the officer to give Edward five more minutes, and he conceded due to the special occasion.

"Sorry about that Winry, you still there?" Edward asked.

"Yes, I'm still here. Oh and Granny said the baby looks just like you when you were born. He has your eyes."

Edward gasped and then collected himself. "Well, yeah, he's got great genetics from his father."

"Yeah, I guess. Speaking of his father, you never gave me a middle name so I put down Edward. I hope that's okay," Winry said.

"So Benjamin Edward Elric. Sounds great to me," Edward replied.

"Well it better be. The birth certificate is already done," Winry said.

"I'm surprised I don't hear him crying. Are you sure he's okay?" Edward asked.

"He's fine. He's asleep. Like I said he loves to sleep."

The officer in charge of the phone signaled one minute left. Edward panicked.

"Winry, I have to go soon. I love you. Thank you for the best news ever!"

"I love you too! Be safe, okay? I'll send you pictures soon." Winry said talking fast.

"I can't wait to see him! I love you! Bye!" Edward said.

"Goodbye!" Winry responded and she heard the phone click and the dial tone begin. She took a deep breath in and sighed. She wished he could be here but took comfort in knowing that at least now Edward knew he was a father to healthy little boy.

Edward hung up the phone and turned around a little sad that his phone call was over. He looked up and saw the soldiers around him beaming. One of them asked "So is it a boy or girl?"

"It's a boy," Edward smiled. The soldiers congratulated him and patted him on the back. Edward then realized. "I gotta tell Al!" and with that, he ran to find him.

Edward realized that the meeting was still going on so he ran to the place where they had their meetings, which was a conference room in a small hotel. He ran to the door and opened it to see the ranked officers there. They were just concluding their meeting and about to leave.

Edward yelled "IT'S A BOY!" He then smiled really big. He couldn't help it! "Winry had him 2 days ago. They're healthy and doing great!"

Everyone's eyes went large and then smiles spread around the room. Alphonse was the first to speak. "That's great brother," Al went up and hugged him. "I'm finally an uncle!"

Mustang approached him. "Well Edward I think this calls for a round of beer tonight on me after Al and I get you up to speed."

Havoc spoke up. "That means my beer is covered too, right?"

Mustang agreed and they all celebrated that evening at the local pub.

2 weeks later, Edward received a letter that had photos in it. He opened it quickly in front of Al, Hawkeye, and Mustang. They had gotten together to enjoy coffee because they were due to go back out to the front lines again to try to reclaim Amestris border. Edward looked at each photo and passed it to Al who passed it to Hawkeye and Mustang. Edward was speechless but Al spoke "He's so cute! Look how tiny he is."

Edward touched his finger along the picture of the baby. He knew this was as close as he could get to his son. He then saw a picture of Winry holding him. There were dark circles under her eyes. She was tired but smiling. Edward finally spoke "I should be there helping her. She looks so tired."

Riza looked at the photo. "A new baby can be tiring. She still looks happy. I'm sure she's getting help."

Edward then saw another photo. His eyes went widened. "We're not showing this one to anyone else."

Riza saw it and her eyes widened. "Oh they're quite large. She's nursing, right?" Mustang and Al both had red faces. Winry was holding the baby in her lap and her breasts looked huge in her tank top.

Edward read the letter and was relieved that Winry was getting help from Granny and some neighbors. Their friend, Nelly, had been cooking for them and taking turns holding the baby. And the family aid they were receiving helped them hire an assistant to help in the shop so Winry could focus on the baby. Even though the baby was well tempered, he still woke up every 2 hours to eat and was growing fast. Edward smiled a little. At least they were safe and doing well.
