Warning! This chapter has implied sexual assault in it. Feel free to skip it if you are sensitive to this material. It's not detailed or anything like that. I wanted to write about this because this does happen in war. There are accounts of civilian women being assaulted by soldiers. Anyways, I don't own these characters but they are amazing to write with.
The phone rang at the Rockbell home and was picked up almost immediately. Winry was resting on the sofa with her son on her chest. She spoke into the phone "Rockbell automail, this is Winry."
"Hi. It's been a while," Edward said solemnly.
Winry's face lit up and she was excited. It had been so long since their last phone call. "Ed, is that you?! What a surprise! I'm so happy that you called. Is Al doing okay? I got your letter saying he was hurt."
"Al is fine. He's been in the hospital for two weeks. He'll actually come back here once he's recovered," Edward replied but his voice sounded kind of sad.
"Ed, are you doing okay?" Winry asked, noticing that he sounded down.
"Yeah, I'm fine," Edward said.
Winry's eyes furrowed. Getting her husband to speak was proving difficult. "Ed, did something bad happen?"
"Yeah," Edward replied.
"Are you allowed to talk about it?"
"No," Edward was holding back a sob.
"Oh Ed, I'm sorry you had a rough day," Winry didn't know what else to say. The baby on her chest started cooing.
Edward eye's lit up. "Is that him?" he asked.
"Yep. He's pretty happy right now. He just finished eating and we're relaxing right now. He doesn't quite understand the concept of the phone so he thinks I'm talking to him," Winry said and then she continued in a sweet voice directed to the baby. "Don't you? You think I'm talking to you, huh?" The baby giggled and cooed in response.
Edward smiled. "Aww, he sounds really cute."
"Oh that's right, you haven't heard him. He was asleep when you called last. Did you want you to talk to him? Here, I'll hold the phone to his ear," Winry said.
Edward shook his head. "Wait Winry! I don't know what to say!" But it was too late. He heard her move the phone to the baby.
Edward cleared his throat. "Hi Ben, how are you? Oh wait, you can't really respond. Ummm.. I miss you. I can't wait to see you. Ummmm… Be good for your mom, okay?" He heard silence and then the phone being moved.
Winry spoke into the phone "Ben seemed intrigued by your voice."
Edward smiled a little. "How old is he now?"
"He just turned 3 months."
Edward groaned as the phone director told him his time was running out.
"Winry, I have to go soon. Thanks for cheering me up. I love you."
"I love you too. Take care of yourself."
"I will. Bye," Edward said and heard her say goodbye. He hung up the phone as did she.
Winry spoke to the baby. "I think we need to send Daddy some more pictures of you. That will cheer him up, huh?" And the baby smiled and giggled as Winry tickled his feet.
Edward walked away from the phone a little happier. He heard his son's voice for the first time. That was something to be happy about.
Earlier that day, Edward and his team were in the process of clearing out a small village that had recently been occupied but the Creteans had retreated just before the Amestrians arrived. There were still some Amestrian citizens there. Edward and Gray knocked on the door of a small cottage house and a young woman answered very shyly holding the door very close and only letting them see a small part of her face.
Edward and Gray reassured her they were here to help and see if she needed anything. The young woman slowly opened the door and the soldiers were taken aback. The young woman had bruises on her face and body and her dress was torn. She was very thin. She began to cry and ran to the back of the room.
Gray went to her and calmed her down enough so she could tell them what had happened. She had been raped and beaten by Cretean soldiers that had been staying at the village. Edward's blood boiled but then they all heard a cry from a room in the back. Edward went to check and found a young baby crying. Edward picked her up and brought her to the woman. The baby was just in blankets and a poorly sewn gown because this village had been cut off from supplies for a long time.
"Is this your baby?" Edward asked. The young woman nodded and took the baby. The baby was also thin. "Where is the father?" Edward asked.
"He was a Cretean and I'm not sure which one it was," the woman said and began sobbing. Gray and Edward were angry. Their blood was red hot, and they were ready to kill. Riza came in and was informed of the situation. She made sure the woman received food supplies and extra blankets. Riza also got in touch with Central to get someone to send baby clothes and diapers. They stayed in the village for a while taking care of people and seeing their needs met. This also meant time to come up with a plan to take the border.
