Fall 1915
The harvest festival was today, and the teenagers along with Winry's grandmother were on their way. Edward and Winry had taken the next step in their relationship though they rarely showed it. Both were new to this, and didn't know when or how to express themselves without much embarrassment. Ed and Winry lead the four into town where they could see the booths lined up with various games and items for sale. They also saw the pens with animals for show.
"What should we do first?" Alphonse asked. He still had to use a cane to walk.
"Let's eat! I'm starving!" Edward replied.
"You're always hungry! You're not eating for Al anymore." Winry said.
"I'm still growing!" Edward defended himself. Winry couldn't deny the measurements for keeping up with his automail leg.
"I want to look at the animals. Nelly has some from her farm that she is showing." Winry said.
"Fine but after some food." Edward told her. Pinako went to the pub to drink with her friends.
While Ed was stuffing his face full of fair food, Winry and Al walked around and saw something that made them grin at each other. In time, they made their way back to Edward. "Brother, slow down and save room for dessert." Winry and Al smiled eerily at him.
"Don't worry, I'm sure I'll have room later." Edward said.
Winry snickered. "Good because we got you a pie."
"A pie? That sounds amazing. Where is it?" Edward asked.
Alphonse couldn't hold back anymore. "Well, you have to get it later. We signed you up for the pie eating contest!" Al and Winry burst out laughing, and laughed harder after seeing the color drain from Ed's face.
"Are you two serious?! I don't want to do that," Edward replied.
Winry rubbed his side with her elbow. "Oh come on. It'll be fun. Plus, there's a cash prize. Though we'll see if you can beat Pitt. He signed up too."
Edward got flames in his eyes. "Oh it's on!"
The group moved on to the games. They won a few prizes but mainly lost some money. But there was one game that was worth it. Al was slowly regaining his strength and balance. He picked the game where he had to throw a ball and knock down all the milk bottles. He got it on the third ball. Edward and Winry cheered loudly for him such that he was slightly embarrassed by them. Ed was proud that his brother was regaining his strength along with knocking down items that had once carried milk.
It was finally time for the pie eating contest. Al and Winry had gotten food and found a seat to watch Edward eat as fast as he could. There were two others that joined the contest. The bell rang, and the contestants dove in. It was kind of gross but more hilarious seeing four men eat so fast and ferociously. Edward threw down the pie tin on the table to show he head cleared it. He had won the prize! He threw his arms up in victory. Winry and Al cheered for him.
Edward joined his girlfriend and his brother. They congratulated him on his victory. Night was starting to fall, and Winry was getting a little cold. "Do you guys want some cider? I was going to get some in the pub." The boys agreed, and Edward could really use a drink after eating all of that pie. Ed and Al were talking when Ed noticed some of their other friends in the pub. Todd and David were talking to Winry, and she was talking to them in her normal friendly manner. Todd touched her shoulder with his hand. Edward's face turned red. Al stopped talking and turned to look at the scene.
Edward began to storm towards the pub when Al grabbed his arm. "Wait Ed!"
"What?! They're flirting with her!" Edward yelled.
Al refused to let go. "They don't know you two are together! You both never show affection, and you two never even talk about it! The only reason I know is because I caught you two kissing behind the house." Edward could see his point but was still angry. Al was trying to reason with him. "Listen Ed. If you go in there like this, you're going to do something stupid and it's going to make WInry angry. We've known these guys since we were in grade school. Just be calm about it."
Edward knew his brother was right. He took two deep breaths and walked into the pub. 'Just be calm' he tried telling himself even though every instinct told him not to. He walked behind Winry, and put his arm around her. She turned and looked up at him and smiled. "Oh hi! Sorry I've taken so long."
"Were you able to order yet?" He asked her trying not to look at their friends.
"No, I tried but it's busy in here." Edward used his height and put up 3 fingers to the pub maid, and asked for cider. The pub maid acknowledged him, and he was so happy that he was tall now.
The two guys said hi to Edward, and one of them asked "Are you two together?"
Winry put her arm around Ed. "Yeah, we're dating now." She beamed at them.
"That's great. Finally! We were wondering if it was ever going to happen." Todd knew his chance with Winry was gone but they were happy for them. The four talked about times when they were kids until Al joined them inside.
They drank cider, and listened to the music, which lead to watching people dance. Winry wished Ed would dance with her but she knew he wasn't a big fan of it. Al noticed but he still didn't have enough balance to dance without the cane. He nudged his brother, and whispered to him "Go dance with her. She wants to." Ed rolled his eyes.
Al knew he had to act. "I guess you can't dance with your metal foot."
Ed's pride stepped in. "Of course I can. Watch this!' He grabbed Winry by her wrist. "Come on, let's dance." Edward knew how to dance. It was the same dances as when they were kids. The guys on one side, and the ladies on the other.
They danced a few more songs until Winry said she needed a break. She kissed Edward on the cheek. "Thank you for the dance," she said as Edward's face had a pink glow on it. Granny and Al were sitting together and had been watching them.
The festivities were coming to an end. They visited the shops as they were about to leave to find any goods they wanted to take home. Al bought a few pies, and Winry noticed some nice scarves for sale. She bought herself a purple one, and then she bought Edward a red one. He didn't have a nice scarf and winter was coming. "Oh Edward, you're back. It got really cold, huh?" she smiled at him and handed him the scarf. "I got you this. It's a scarf. Let me put it on you."
"Oh… ummm. Thanks," he leaned down and she wrapped the scarf around his neck.
"Hurry up, you two! It's getting cold out!" Granny yelled at them from the end of the row of shops. Granny and Al turned to go home. Edward put his arm around her to keep Winry warm but also to signal to the rest of the town that she was his. He blushed a little as did she but Winry was also glad that they were getting more comfortable showing affection in front of others.
