Jack didn't understand what he was hearing, he had gone along with the what the robot had said but he realized now it could have very easily sent him into a trap. He stared at the woman with the pistol, he knew he had to disarm her but he couldn't just rush her because of his failing shields and he wasn't sure what caliber the pistol she had was chambered in. He stared hard at her thinking but not saying anything and he noticed she was getting antsy as she began to sway slightly and her arms started to shake a little, 'she must not be used to the weight of the pistol, so she's not military or trained at all,' he thought to himself as he stood there eyeing her up and taking notes of the situation.
She had to only be about 5'10" at most and was a slimmer woman for the most part, she wouldn't put up much of a struggle at all once he got within his reach of her, that was the only problem right now. As he was thinking however the elevator outside the vault door started to go back up and this caused her to turn her head in surprise, which he took full advantage of. He launched at her grabbing and crushing the pistol in his hands, which he didn't mean to do but was surprised at it's weak design, and after he had her pinned to the ground being careful not to injure her majorly as she may be a friendly. "What is this planet?" he asked her hoping to get a different answer than all the information the robot had given him, only to make him have many questions. "Earth, what do you mean what planet? where are you from?" she blurted out as she struggled against his grip to no avail. Jack's mind was racing as all of the information the robot had given him flooded back into his mind, 'I have to find out what happened and where I am,' he thought not accepting the thought yet that he could be in some other dimension.
Jack assumed these people were simply trying to get something out of him, what exactly they wanted he wasn't sure but he had been trained better than to just take everything he is told at face value, even though he immediately came down here when the robot on the surface told him to with no answers. He was angry at his mistake but he wasn't fully thinking straight as he didn't know his location and was alone, but he was trained to survive on his own and knew he could make it completely alone but he would prefer to have allies nearby in case anything was to happen to him. Jack looked back down at the woman and decided she wasn't any threat without her pistol so he got off from on top of her and allowed her to stand watching her carefully the entire time. "You wanna tell me who you are and why you just tackled me and destroyed my pistol? Also how did you destroy my pistol?" the woman asked Jack. He stared at her unresponsive for some time before answering, "Chief Warrant Officer spartan 145 of the UNSC," he responded in a monotone voice as it was natural to him now to repeat his rank and number. "I've never heard of the UNSC but I recognize a military rank anywhere," the woman replied curiously, "Are you some sort of private army or what?" "No," was the only answer he gave to her as he didn't trust her at all yet but was getting some hint that she had no idea who the UNSC was at all.
Jack stared at her for a little while longer contemplating his next move before turning and walking back towards the elevator, "Hey wait you can't just leave me down here," Jack did as he had been doing and didn't respond, simply walking to the elevator and waiting on the woman to get on next to him. "My name's Nora by the way in case you were wondering," Jack wasn't interested in small talk and he simply turned to the woman and nodded. "You don't talk a whole lot do ya?" Nora asked as she looked at the large man, Jack lightly shook his head before staring up at the opening elevator doors. As the elevator reached the top Jack stepped off the platform and began walking back down the hill, "So what are you exactly? cause i've never seen someone as big as you around here but everything is so different now I'm not sure anything can surprise me,". Jack stopped walking when she asked the question and turned to the woman, "A soldier," was the only reply he gave before turning back around and continuing his walk to the small community, Nora stood up on the trail down for a few more seconds before she followed after the large strange man.
When Jack was back in the center of the community he looked around once again to make sure he didn't miss anything on his first look around, "Codsworth you're still here?!" he heard Nora shout from behind him. He turned around and saw the woman and the robot talking to each other but didn't pay any mind to their conversation as he kept scanning the horizon hoping to find something that could help him get home or find out where he possibly could be. "Hey soldier boy, you might wanna hear this!" Jack turned around to face Nora and after a small debate in his head he made his way over to the two, "So codsworth has some info that I think would help you out," she said as she turned to 'codsworth' and nodded to him. "Well sir all I was saying was that I saw you and some other large ball of fire come out of the sky, you of course landed here and the other one flew very far south somewhere but I'm not sure of exactly where," Jack contemplated this information. The robot could be simply lying, but he had been truthful about the vault when he entered it, so Jack decided to trust this machine once more. 'It could be the pelican anyway, and maybe could be my way home if it isn't destroyed completely,' he thought as he continued to look at the two before giving his simple answer, "Thank you,".
Jack had walked off and sat down by himself on a stack of tires by one of the abandoned houses, 'I need to find that ship, but I have no idea about the terrain on this planet,'. Jack continued to think on this for a few more minutes before he finally came to one of the only solutions that he could think of, 'I'll have to ask Nora if she would be willing to take me, but not now,' he thought as he looked up and looked at Nora who was walking through the house across from him. 'I need to wait and make sure that I can trust her,' Jack then looked around him and noticed that there seemed to be crafting stations and workbenches around the house he was sitting in front of. 'Must be some sort of settlement things, I wonder who could be living here to make those,' Jack thought before standing up and checking his armor to see where some of the damage to his shields could be. As he was feeling around he could feel any damage anywhere he could reach besides the damage he took on reach, which he knew meant that it was either on his back somewhere or on the shield generator itself. Jack knew that this meant as well that he couldn't just throw it back together with anything he had around here or on himself, he would have to go found a parts kit, one of which could be on that crashed ship. Jack thought about not having any shields and thought about how he was gonna have to be so much more careful than he was before as to not get shot and injured as he didn't have any medical supplies on him from using them on his teammates while he was still on reach. There were many things that Jack was gonna have to change about how he did things here, but he would have to worry about all that later as he saw Nora walking towards him looking determined about something.
"Hey I've got a question for you," Nora said to the large spartan man, to which Jack simply nodded his head signaling to go ahead, "What would you say to helping me find some more people that should be down the road?". She seemed excited to go out on some sort of adventure even if it was very small, Jack considered it for a moment before thinking that this could be a test to see if he could truly trust her, "I will follow," he replied to her. "Great, but I think you might wanna lead since you broke my gun, I don't have any other weapons," this made Jack a little nervous of her but he understood her reasoning. They walked down the neighborhood road and crossed the bridge that surprisingly held Jack's weight, and when they got across the bridge they saw a woman laying dead on the ground with some sort of dog that was also dead with a tire iron sticking out of it's chest. Jack stopped and searched the woman for anything useful; he found some sort of weird pipe made pistol and handed the hand made weapon over to Nora before continuing down the road.
Jack figured with as junky as that weapon looked he wasn't in any danger with her having given her the pistol. As they walked down the road Jack could see some sort of station looking building on their right, he then turned and looked at Nora as he saw she noticed the building too. "Might as well check it out," she said not needing him to ask any questions to answer his obvious question. They walked to the road entrance and didn't make it far into the road entrance before they both heard a bark coming from the building. Jack quickly readied his knife and he saw Nora raise up her pistol beside him, but just as they had readied their weapons they both saw a german shepherd dog come trotting out of the building and coming towards them. Jack was unsure of this dog but Nora quickly dropped her weapon and held out her hand, "Hey buddy!" she said excitedly, "Whatcha doin out here?" she asked the dog as he walked into her arms and then was bombarded by hugs from Nora. "Do you know this dog?" Jack asked her, wondering why she was so friendly with the animal already, "No I don't but I can tell that he's a good boy and doesn't wanna hurt us,". Jack was amazed at her trusting of the animal but then he thought about how she had trusted him from the beginning without truly knowing him or asking many questions about him.
Jack wondered how someone could be so trusting of people in a world like this where it seems like everyone could be out to get you or stab you in the back. Jack gave a small smile at her holding the dog as though he were a long time friend, "Do you wanna come with us buddy?" the dog simply responded by barking and placing itself at Nora's side. "Well I guess that answers that question," she said smiling and looking at Jack, to which he simply gave her a quick nod and walked into the building to search through all of it while Nora waited with the dog. After about 30 or so minutes Jack came back out with a new 10 mm pistol that he held carefully as to not break it and it had two extra magazines of ten rounds each, "Well I guess you found yourself a gun, so now we're both armed and dangerous," she said with a smile. Jack merely looked at her not amused by the attempt at a joke and walked past her to the road to continue on their journey of where she wanted to go, "Not a jokester then," was all he heard from behind him as he walked on the road around a curve that angled downhill.
As Jack rounded the corner he saw what looked like a cow with an extra head and a huge hole in its abdomen with two very large bugs flying just above the dead animal. Jack took aim at one with his pistol and quickly pulled the trigger but because wasn't trained in this pistol he wasn't sure about the recoil and missed his first shot entirely. Jack then heard a small rifle go off behind him and he watched as one of the bugs dropped dead as the other one rose up higher off the ground before it too was killed by the rifle. "Not a crack shot eh?" Nora said as she walked past Jack with her pipe rifle in hand, Jack gave her a small glare before continuing his walk down towards the town of Concord as her and the robot called it. Jack knew however that this was going to be a long journey with Nora as he promised that in return for her guiding him safely to his ship he would help her find her son, and man did he hope her son didn't make it very far.
