Little Snow's Guardian
Chapter 2
She came to me like the dripping rain, Vanished like the water vapour.
The moment I gaze at her eyes, I felt like staring at her.
When her smile blossomed like a flower,
I felt like flying in the air.
Oh how did she pluck my heart like a wild rose?
The climate was so nice that he could just stay here the whole lifetime. It was not so hot, not so cold, the smell of the dust after the rain, he loved it. Maybe he was a pluviophile.
He was lying down on his bike, staring at the sky. Breathing in the fresh air, he relaxed. He just wished it would rain right now. And what could possibly disturb this mesmerizing moment?
"Hey Jack, someone is calling you." There it was.
"Who is it?" He asked, his eyes not leaving the sky above.
"Umm Devil?" He read the name on the upcoming phone call.
"Devil?!" Bunny exclaimed. "What, is it Pitch? Why on earth would you name someone as 'Devil?" He asked.
Jack sighed. "Just leave it. Nothing important." He said and started whistling. His friends looked at him confused. Then shrugged off and stayed silent.
Then the phone rang again. "It's the Devil again Jack." Olaf looked at him and gave him the phone. "Why don't you answer it? Might be something important." Bunny suggested.
Jack sighed and answered the phone. He knew what was going to come. He was born ready for that.
"Do you have something called a brain in your skull?" Elsa spat.
Okay he didn't expect that. "For your information, every human being on earth has a brain. If you need, you can go read about human anatomy."
"I know that. But after what you have done, I'm starting to doubt that you have one."
"What did I do?" He had no idea what she was talking about. His thoughts went to the mistakes he had made in the past. But what was she talking about?
"Did you promise Manny that you would have a family gathering in our home?"
"Yes, what is wrong with that?"
"What is wrong with that? Jack, you promised him that you would cook dinner for our family. And you don't even know how to cook."
"That's why we have you. You know how to cook right?"
His friends on the other hand had no idea why Jack would ask a Devil to cook food. They tried to find out who it was.
"I know how to cook! But I have an important meeting this Saturday. You should have asked me before you promised him. What am I supposed to do now?" Her voice was filled with anger and dejection. That second he knew that he screwed up. Unsure what to do he asked,
"What should we do now?"
He heard a heavy sigh. "Come home. We'll think about something."
The call ended. Was she Angry? Irritated? Annoyed? He didn't know. Probably all of the above.
"Okay guys, I've gotta go real quick." He got up and sat on his bike.
"Wait. What did the Devil say to you?" Olaf asked him as he started the bike. He looked like he was in a panic attack.
"I'll explain to you later." He turned the bike and started to ride.
"Where are you going?" Bunny asked him, shouting.
"To hell." He shouted back.
Those poor guys didn't even understand what he was talking about. They looked at each other then back to the road in front. Maybe they'll ask him later...
His hands clutched his keys, as he stepped out of his bike. Normally he did not panic when he screwed up something. But he had to deal with Elsa here. Oh and her dog, the worst animal living on earth he would say.
When he came in, the house was awfully quiet. Strange. He noted. He took a deep breath and made his way towards his room. Sometimes an angry Elsa is scary as hell.
He had known her from when he was little. She was a prim and proper girl. Always got an A plus in everything. Her manners, vocabulary, grades, use of new and big words in every sentence annoyed him the most.
His mother most of all would always support her in everything. She loved Elsa. But him… never. He was always a free boy who loved to play, spend time with his friends. That was life. And everything shut down because of his so-called wife.
He halted before his room to see the door slightly ajar. He pushed it slowly, and the door gave him a tiny squeak. His eyes fell on the pacing woman. She looked like she was busy speaking with someone on her phone. And Marshmallow trailed behind her, wagging his tail like it was his only job.
He waited till she ended the call. After she did, he stepped in.
"Whom were you talking to?" His question startled the woman who was in deep thought.
"Don't you know how to knock on the door?" Her voice sounded piqued.
"Knock the door?" He asked. "Why should I knock on the door to get into my room?"
"Your room? Excuse me, you are sharing this room with me."
Marshmallow didn't know what they were talking about, but he stood with Elsa, agreeing with wherever she said.
Jack looked away with a huff. "Fine. You still haven't answered my question." He said.
Elsa stared blankly at him, unsure what was the question he had asked her. Then raised her eyebrows when she remembered his question. "I was talking with my boss. About the meeting I had this Saturday?"
"And what did he say?" He hoped that she had a good answer for that. And no way he was gonna cook this Saturday and put his guests into diarrhea the next week.
"She said that she'll manage without me. I was excused because I just got married two days ago and she wanted me to enjoy a few days with my husband."
Jack had a heavy sigh of relief. "Good. Manny always likes homemade food. That's why I had to promise him that we'll cook dinner for our little gathering."
"It's not a problem." She waved a dismissive hand. "But I'll need your help." She said casually as she sat on the bed with a large book in her hands.
Jack's eyes went wide at that request. "Who me?!" He pointed to himself. "I don't know how to cook!"
Elsa raised a perfect eyebrow at him. "Don't you know how to cut vegetables?" She asked him as a matter of fact.
"I do." He replied hesitantly.
Elsa sighed. "Then that's more than enough." She flipped a page on her book.
"What are you looking at?" Curiously, she poked his head to have a better look at her book.
"It's our wedding day album obviously." She flipped another page, with her chin resting on her palm.
"Wait what?" He jumped on the bed beside her. "When did you get this?"
"This morning." Her plane face curved into a smile when she saw a particular picture. "Aww Marshal look at you." Hearing his name, the dog jumped beside her and laid his head on her lap. "Aren't you handsome?" She gushed.
Our Jack on the other hand couldn't take his eyes off his picture. "Forget the dog. Don't I look handsome?" A sudden childlike glee spread over his face.
Elsa snickered. "You look like a school boy, Jackson." Marshmallow agreed with her by giving a bark at him.
"Remind me to take you to the Ophthalmologist tomorrow."
Elsa rolled her eyes. A couple of minutes went by with little arguments and small disputes. Until a thunder roared, and Marsh jumped down to bark fearfully at the sky.
"Marshal! Come here." Her voice was stern enough to shut the dog up. He whimpered and climbed next to her. Elsa smiled. "It's alright." She patted his head, to which he leaned into her happily.
"This beast is afraid of thunder?" He started laughing. This time Marshmallow shut him up by his deadly snarl. Jack gulped.
"Enough you two." Elsa chided.
Jack gazed upon the windows. Rain poured down heavily. A smile was plastered on his face. The rain was always nostalgic to him. It always reminded him of his mother. His mother always would tell a philosophy about the rain whenever she had one to say.
'Love is like the rain honey. We don't see it every time the cloud gathers. But when it does, never forget to soak in it. It will be the most wonderful feeling you would have. If you are happy, it sings with you. If you are sad it cries with you. Just like love.'
He never believed in love. But if love laughs and cries with us, what else do we need? It is always soft as the water droplets, hard as downpour, cool as the wind, warm as the sun. Just like Elsa.
Wait what? He was taken back by his sudden thought. His eyes fell on the now smiling woman beside him. She was annoying, yes. But sometimes he would stand staring at her, he never knew why. Might it be because of a fondness? He shook his head. Whatever it was, he just closed his eyes and sunk into the rain's sound. And what more feeling is better than that?
