Disclaimer: I do not own Ratchet and Clank or any of its characters. The more cat behaviors I give Ratchet, the more obvious it becomes that I desperately need a kitty in my life. Come here, Kitty Mans, and let me give you cat behaviors. ;-;
The Sweetest Little Sound
It was so dumb.
A sigh left her, and she ran a hand through her bangs. Her body shifted in bed, getting rid of the slight discomfort that had been building in her back, and with great care, Talwyn looked over to her husband.
Ratchet was dead to the world. Sunlight from the curtained windows drew lines over one side of his face, just missing his eyes. His mouth was cracked open, something that never usually happened, and a tiny bit of drool wet the pillow beneath his mouth. Even though he was laying on his stomach, Talwyn could hear the steady rhythm of his breathing.
He looked so sweet and happy when he was asleep. Sure, that excluded the times when he was tortured by a nightmare, but normally, the view of her sleeping Lombax was enough to settle any worry in her body.
A smile pulled at the corners of her mouth, and her hand lifted to cradle her cheek.
She didn't want to wake him, but she was far too addicted to the sweet sound…
With one last sigh, Talwyn leaned over, letting her left hand brush across Ratchet's soft cheek.
Ratchet jerked his head up, his eyes still squeezed shut. His elbows shifted, arms drawing closer together under the pillow to better hold his upper body up. And as his head reached the highest point his tired head could reach, a high-pitched sound trilled in his throat.
"Mrrr?"
The smile that spread across Talwyn's face was one that absolutely nobody else could get.
Ratchet turned to her, blinking and squinting his eyes. "Everything n'kay?" he asked, a slight scratch in his voice.
Talwyn moved her hand back to his cheek, brushing her fingers over the soft fur. "Yeah, everything's okay. Just like seeing you sleep." Her hand moved to the extra fluff at the top of his head, hair that would usually be covered under his aviator cap. "Go back to sleep, darling…"
Ratchet didn't need another prompt. His head thunked back down against the pillow, eyes closed far before his forehead landed against the cushion. His breathing settled back down into the rhythm it had been in before Talwyn had brushed his cheek. Even the drool slowly came back.
Her heart thudded in her chest, and as she rolled over to get out of bed and start her day, peace settled in her body.
As dumb as it was, the sweet little sound Ratchet made was the most beautiful thing she was able to hear.
