More of the WHSS. I still don't own Worm/Parahumans but I'm making more OCs in this than everything else I've written combined and they're mine.
WHSS- Chapter 2
The WHSS watched as normal cops had shown up to arrest the non-powered members of the ABB, with a couple ambulances picking up the members that hadn't come to yet to get a quick look over at the hospital. The glow from Armsmaster's motorcycle fading away as he followed the PRT vehicle Lung was in. Brigid gently fingered the business card he'd left in her possession. He'd been as passionate as he ever was in talking up the PRT. They were to contact him or the organization in case they changed their minds about joining. He was also clear that they could also be contacted for when they started their official debut and needed help coordinating with Panacea. The PRT also offers power testing for capes.
Cardinal nodded to her companions as they too began to leave, leave in the general direction the bugs informed her were four people and three dogs, who'd been watching everything.
None of them were surprised when the Undersiders appeared.
"Hiya Red," Tattletale said. Her power telling her they already knew they were there.
Red self consciously touched her hair. Dyed red for tonight. Not used to it. Likes her real hair color.
"Was everything you told Armsmaster the truth?" Grue asked suspiciously. They had, after all, claimed to be there to recruit him.
"Rumor has it he's working on a truth detector," Red replied. "I think he would have called us out on it if he thought we were lying."
Regent shook his head, "There's no way you have that many capes in your group."
Red just smirked before replying, "Believe what you will."
Tattletale knew they were confident in themselves. Believed themselves to be strong. She hoped they were, because either way she was going to have to go with them. Her boss would want to know about them and if they were anywhere near as good as they thought they were maybe they could save her. They were definitely aligned with heroics.
"Are you interested in learning more about us?" Cardinal asked. "If you'd like to join us?"
Tattletale nodded, knowing it would be enough to show her interest to them. The other members of the Undersides slowly following her, a bit more hesitant and suspicious. Once all their agreements had been acknowledged by the WHSS, they all began to brace themselves, Tattletale stiffened not knowing what was coming, there was a blast of light from Gabrielle and some weird sensation that they didn't know was caused by Achilles. They awoke from their disorientation to find themselves deep in a man made tunnel.
"What was that?" Grue demanded as Bitch inspected her dogs and Tattletale threw up off to the side.
"Sorry, we couldn't risk you knowing exactly where this hideout is and knowing that the disorientation is coming can make you sick. I think Tattletale's ability tried to tell her," Brigid gently rubbed Tattletale's back letting VC guide her powers to help her recover. "It's not as bad after the first time."
It took a few moments to recover. They hadn't teleported, Tattletale knew. Some sort of sleepwalking type thing? Not really being mastered. Tattletale trying to understand how they had gotten there as the nine parahumans soon continued through the tunnels. It wasn't like the Undersiders could just leave at this point.
"This is one of Marquis's old hideouts. The Trinity found it and claimed it for themselves," Gabrielle explained as she led everyone. The blue light she generated from her hand lighting up the path before her as she walked. The others walking beside the light trail it left as it slowly faded away.
"Trinity?" Tattletale asked simply, still feeling a little nauseous. Her power informing her that a bunch of bugs had swarmed up and consumed the evidence of her illness, that there would be no trace of it or any trace of their unknowing wandering in this base. They would have trouble leaving without help, but her power assured her that the WHSS would guide them out as well. She was just thankful her teammates hadn't realized she'd been so startled.
"WHSS subgroup. They're a group trigger so they stick together. Did so before the WHSS started finding each other."
Grue looked around the passage before asking, "How can you be sure this place isn't bugged?"
Red laughed, an echoing chittering joined it. "Even if there was tech we somehow missed when sweeping the place there isn't anything my bugs can't find. Trust me, there is no tech and no people watching."
Even the other WHSS shivered at her words, that was creepy. The slight echo caused from their walking could no longer cover up the rustling sound that they all now knew was the wings from Red's bugs.
They wandered through the maze of tunnels, guided by Gabrielle. Even with her power Tattletale couldn't tell where they had been or if they had gone over anything. After what felt like hours but was only about 30 minutes they arrived. The slight hum of the lights and computers a welcome distraction. Inside the base they saw three people sitting at various computers, the set up very impressive. Tattletale could tell from a glance that they had built their own power supply to hide any power drain from being noticed by the authorities. She knew at least one of them was a tinker. The power supply they had made was worth a fortune if it was stable and didn't need much maintenance. It wasn't always maintained by it's maker her power assured her.
Two of them rose immediately at their entrance. A handsome man under his mask, blonde hair, skintight but comfortable costume, as much a costume as many of the WHSS seemed to be bothered with anyway, showcasing an impressive figure. Legend would be jealous. The second person, a woman, a little shorter than average. Not Asian, Tattletale concluded, maybe Middle Eastern, possibly Indian. The beautiful black hair could belong to many races, but what she could see of her skin was definitely too dark to be a white woman. They were a couple, had been since before their trigger.
Gabrielle smiled as she introduced them, "These are Paean and Gidget."
Brigid and Achilles wandered off together. To the kitchen, Tattletale knew.
"And this is Rumor," Red said introducing the final member of the Trinity as she went over to see what had her so engrossed.
"She's the source of your intel," Tattletale realized as her thinker headache worsened. "Every time you said that there was a rumor it was information she gathered. … Because she's an AI?"
"Cyborg," Rumor, who was wearing what looked like a Mrs. Claus Christmas costume, lowered the red hood, the white fake fur edging gently caressing against her skin, the light from the surrounding electronics illuminate her face. The model like face was flawless, surrounded by soft blonde wavy curls, if you ignored the clearly mechanical eye. "Although there are a surprising number of computer systems out there with anti-AI tech that seems to identify me as an AI. I should figure out what tinker is so terrified of AIs that he or she put out so many protections against them."
The distracted woman started to sit back down, her hands already reaching out towards her keyboard.
"Not yet Rumor," Paean said grasping one of the hands and gently tugging her towards himself as he guided her towards the sitting area the others were already ushering their guests, recruits, to. "We're going to have a meeting about the Undersiders."
Siblings, Tattletale's power whispered to her. He was used to distracting her when she wanted to find out something. Her powers were similar to her own she could tell, she just had to use a computer to make the conclusions.
The Trinity sat together with Rumor sandwiched between them. Their obvious care for each other showing. Each of Rumor's hands was clasped with one of her companions, their fingers intertwined.
"I thought there were as many in your group as everyone else in the Bay," Regent said with a raised eyebrow as he took a seat.
"We're not all present," Brigid explained as she and Achilles returned, each holding a large tray. "We're the welcoming committee. We'll see what we can offer each other and then pass out the information to the rest of the group to decide on. Besides, you're uncomfortable with eight of us, how would you feel if ALL of us were here?"
The eight members of the WHSS and the four members of the Undersiders all sat spread out in the makeshift living room. There were a couple sofas and lounge seats spread around a table. If it weren't for Tattletale's assurance that the WHSS were on the level the other Undersiders would have left already. It's not normally a good thing to be outnumbered by unknown capes after all.
Bitch watched in surprise as Brigid set down her tray that, unlike Achille's with it's various cans of soft drinks, had three bowls of dog food. Really good dog food if her dog's tails were to be believed. Brigid pushed the tray towards her, Bitch picking a bowl up and with a nod of reassurance from Tattletale started setting the bowls down for her dogs.
"Why should I or my team join your group," Grue asked. "I don't think anyone has even heard of your group before tonight."
"We have a very strong support system," Paean explained. "We have a connection together that other capes should envy."
"The main reason you're trying to recruit me is your hatred of Shadow Stalker though."
Gidget nodded, "We do hate her a lot. With reason. And she seems to hate you, just because you're powers don't mesh."
"I find it hard to believe that she caused that many trigger events," Grue denied.
"Most people don't discuss their trigger events but I don't care if people know ours," Rumor said as she shifted her legs, her robe opening ever so slightly at the bottom revealing the one of her legs was also mechanical. "Shadow Stalker has various levels of responsibility to the trigger events of the WHSS. Our trio was a group trigger, and isn't even the worst trigger events she helped cause. Red and Brigid were the ones she's most complicit in though."
"She pulled a disgusting prank after a year and a half of intense bullying which resulted in me almost dying while causing me to double trigger and I ended up being hospitalized for a week," Red said greatly summarizing her traumatic backstory.
"That is like leaving out so much," VC said staring at her. "What happened to you was so intense that when I visited you while you were still in a coma at the hospital I triggered. I felt so guilty that I hadn't helped you. She wasn't even punished for it."
"Anyway," Rumor said before they could completely overtake her with their own backstories. The WHSS members were all a lot more comfortable sharing their trigger events than other capes. "I was attacked by the ABB while walking to the mall with Gidget. I'm not an idiot, I knew exactly what would happen to us if they succeeded in kidnapping us. I fought them like crazy. They cut my face so deeply that I eventually lost my eye. I also managed to get my leg so mangled fighting them that they actually left me to die and focused on Gidget. She got knocked unconscious and was bleeding from a head wound. There was so much blood that the EMT's thought she might die from the blood loss. Undoubtedly the worst day in my life so far. That's when Paean showed up. He was worried when we were running late meeting him. Between our injuries and someone else showing up the gang members ran away. But did that make any of us trigger? No. How our powers knew that our day could be worse, I don't know. What made my day worse you might ask? A snarky hormonal teen vigilante. You see, Shadow Stalker only helps out if the victims fight back. By the time she'd shown up we had saved ourselves. She f-ing attacked Paean. He was on the phone with 911 and trying to help us. She thought he was E88 because he was leaning over me and she could only see Gidget, who is clearly not white. She attacked him, she only left when we could hear the sirens. Gidget came to, just in time to see Shadow Stalker put an arrow through her boyfriend's arm. Idiot didn't even notice as we triggered and left when the ambulances showed up. End result was all three of us were hospitalized. And she probably still thinks she 'helped us'."
"I stand by my belief that powers can tell when she's nearby and will hold back knowing she'll make the situation worse before triggering," VC shared.
Rumor gently rubbed a couple fingers into her forehead, otherwise ignoring Void's conspiracy theory.
"Waking up again in the hospital was horrible, and seeing what had happened to Rumor," Gidget explained. "Rumor could have escaped after her eye was hurt but she wouldn't abandon me and it cost her her leg."
"You're my best friend, I'd never leave you. Whenever I see my eye or leg it just reminds me that you're alive."
Red looked sadly at the strong duo, wondering again what had gone wrong with her own close friendship to result in her best friend becoming Shadow Stalker's … shadow.
"I created cybernetic replacements for her eye and leg," Gidget explained.
Rumor shifted her legs so she could pull open her robe revealing that the clearly fake leg went above her knee. "There was no way we could continue our normal lives after this. It was obvious that a tinker helped me. Tinkers never last long without getting picked up by a gang. We had to hide. We were lucky to find this place. Then when the other members of the WHSS started finding each other we joined in."
BEEP BEEP
"What is that?" Regent asked looking up as one of the computers lit up while beeping.
"The schedule!" Paean rushed to the computer.
Tattletale held back a moan as her power identified the purpose. "You guys are really stalking Shadow Stalker?"
"We're not stalking per se," Red denied as she got up and hovered behind her teammate. "We're just keeping an eye out on a known trigger causer, making sure she's not making some poor person trigger."
"Pretty sure that's stalking," Regent said staring at the duo at the computer.
"We have a rough schedule where we all take turns checking up on her. Those of us who go to school with her take the most shifts," Red further explained. "The problem is when she's on patrol as a ward and ditches her official route. It's hard to keep track of her then, so only a few people in our group are able to watch her. She's yet to notice us when she does her unofficial patrols, but we think the other wards might be a little more observant than her."
"A little?" Void asked.
"A lot," Red clarified, feeling it was necessary to explain. "I was being sarcastic."
"She's making some unexpected moves, I think she's heading towards the Rig. You think they've had time to review what you told Armsmaster?" Paean looked behind him at Red.
She nodded, "They're probably calling her in. I'll have to be more careful at school. I'm probably the only person she'll suspect might have triggered because of her. I might have to go low profile for awhile. We'll need the others in the school to pull double duty watching her if they don't pull her out, too."
"That's why you dyed your hair red for tonight," Tattletale clutched the sofa hard as another jolt of pain went through her head.
"You should probably stop using your power," Red said in concern, glancing over. "Thinker headaches are supposed to be really bad."
"I can't turn it off," she snapped before a strange sensation overtook her. She paused for a moment, her eyes relaxing before they shot back open to stare at the capes surrounding her. Brigid and Paean, who had hurriedly left the computer, were touching the top of her head and the pain was fading as she also took in less data. She was still analyzing everything, but not really everything. Lisa couldn't really explain it to herself as her power almost became numb without actually turning off. She could tell that Void's power was negating her own while guiding Brigid's healing and that Paean was somehow treating her headache. No one had ever been able to treat a thinker headache before, she'd checked and took over the counter medicine because that was all anyone could use.
"How?" she gasped out as even the pain she'd grown used to and didn't even notice faded away. Smiling Brigid and Paean stepped away from her.
"We think it's a group trigger effect," Achilles shared from across the coffee table. "I mean, the WHSS as a whole wasn't a group trigger, but we get some of the crossover effects, we think it's because we share the same trigger person. Our powers all seem to work well with each other, almost optimizing our attempts to work together. It actually seems to remove weaknesses. Parahumans in general are drawn to conflict but we've found ways around it."
"Besides stalking Shadow Stalker," Regent restated.
"Not really," Achilles denied. "I mean, sort of? None of us have ever sought to harm her and all have reason to want to. Red wasn't kidding about us having the patience of saints. When we see her doing things to harm others we stop her without her even knowing. It's driving her nuts that she keeps failing to use her aggression, but that's just a side effect and not a goal."
Red frowned wishing that they hadn't decided that their morals were too high to spy inside the PRT to find out what was happening there.
"You're the ones who found the spying software in the PRT computers," Tattletale eyes were quite wide staring at them.
"We said we wanted to do things in general to help out Brockton Bay," Red explained as she finished typing a summary of the night to send to the WHSS as a whole as well inputting some commands into the computer to change the Shadow Stalker Schedule to reflect the possible outcomes of the night. The Trinity would be here to alter anything if it was needed later.
"So you just went into the PRT computers and kicked everyone else out?"
Coil had been furious with her when she couldn't figure out how all the holes were being patched in. She knew he had moles working there too but Coil liked to have a lot of backup systems in place and all his attempts to get back in had failed. There had been a ton of activity about a month ago where flaws and weaknesses had been isolated and repaired without anyone but some of the spies even realizing anything had happened. Tattletale was fairly sure the PRT itself still didn't know they had been hacked to be unhacked.
"Wait... Are you guys also responsible for the improvement in the dock area?" Tattletale asked as she remembered the other huge question mark she hadn't been able to solve. There had been a small but noticeable improvement in the dock area in the last couple months. A couple more jobs going to the union that might have gone elsewhere. Some minor repairs to the roads around it, repairs not done by the city or the dock workers. Just so many small things that she hadn't been able to figure it out. Couldn't figure it out because it was so many people causing it to happen.
"We said we wanted to do things in general to help out Brockton Bay," Red explained again, rejoining them at the sofas. "The hospital is just our official debut since we wouldn't be able to pull that off behind the scenes."
"What else have you been doing?" Tattletale demanded.
Red smiled widely, "You'll have to join us first to find out."
