Chapter 99: Reversal! Gilford the Lightning

"My turn." Jonouchi took his turn. "Marik, I'll attack you with your grotesque pet just like you wanted."

"That so?" Marik quirked a brow. "It's just as you figured, this Trap does not have a permanent effect; it will disappear from my field on my next turn. By the way, 'Lava Golem's attack is called 'Golem Volcano'."

"Attack, 'Lava Golem'." Jonouchi ordered.

"Reverse Trap, activate." Marik countered. "'Relieve Monster'. This Trap Card activates when the opposing player declares an attack and lets me return one Monster to my hand. I can then Special Summon a Four-Star Monster to take its place. I return 'Plasma Eel' to my hand and Summon 'Plasma Eel' again in Defense Mode. 'Plasma Eel' won't be destroyed in battle by any Monster." he reminded, 'Lava Golem's attack doing no damage. "And Helpoemer discards another Card from your hand."

"Turn end." Jonouchi growled.

"My turn." Marik drew a Card. "I activate Magic Card, 'Machine Duplication'. When I have a Machine-Type Monster with 500 Attack Points or less on the field, you can Special Summon up to two Monsters holding the same name from your deck using this Magic Card. Just so you know, my deck contains two more 'Plasma Eels'. Using their special ability, they attach themselves to the enemy Monsters. In addition, I place two face-down Cards and end my turn."

"My turn." Jonouchi took his turn. "Magic Card, activate. 'Graceful Dice'. 'Graceful Dice' lets me increase the Attack Points of a Monster with less than 500 Attack. Marik, your 'Machine Duplication' can only make Machine-Type Monsters with less than 500 Attack Points, right? Then I wonder what's gonna happen if I raise the Attack Power of the 'Plasma Eel' on your field. 'Plasma Eel's Attack Points multiply by six." he grinned, 'Graceful Dice' rolling a six. "From 500 to 3000 Points in a single stroke. And that means 'Machine Duplication' is destroyed. That also means the two 'Plasma Eels' leeching onto my Monsters are destroyed along with it. Now I got my three sacrifices. I sacrifice three Tributes: 'Lava Golem', 'Rocket Warrior' and 'Panther Warrior' to Summon 'Gilford the Lightning'."

"Jonouchi, you do realize you just raised the Attack of 'Plasma Eel' to 3000, right?" Marik reminded. "It's got 200 more Attack Points than 'Gilford the Lightning'."

"'Gilford the Lightning's Special Ability activates." Jonouchi called out, taking out 'Plasma Eel', despite the higher Attack Points.

"What in the world..." Marik was surprised. "'Plasma Eel' who's supposed to not be able to be destroyed in battle, was beaten? How?"

"It wasn't a battle." Jonouchi corrected. "It was a Special Ability. When 'Gilford the Lightning' is Summoned, it instantly destroys all Monsters on the opponent's side of the field; no matter what kinds of Special Ability those Monsters may have. I direct attack with 'Gilford the Lightning'."

"Not so fast." Marik countered. "Reverse Trap, open. 'Nightmare Mirror'. Jonouchi, I must applaud you for giving me a great fight so far, but I can't allow this duel to drag on any further. 'Gilford the Lightning' is going to attack you inside the mirror. Just a heads up: attacking the mirror inflicts 1000 points of damage to your Life. Although, I, too, accept some risks by discarding a Card from my hand. Furthermore, Helpoemer's effect sends a Card in your hand to the graveyard, though it's kinda of pointless, seeing you have no Cards in hand."

"Turn end." Jonouchi snarled.

"My turn." Marik took his turn. "Good job pushing me this far; I never thought I would need to use God against you. Magic Card activate. 'Monster Reborn'. For your information, Ra has the power of Swift Attack. I activate Ra's third Ability; 'Winged Dragon of Ra' – Final Form: 'Egyptian God Phoenix'". I never thought I'd have to show you Ra's true form, you should be proud of yourself, Jonouchi. I strongly advise you to surrender before I am forced to use Ra's third Special Ability on you. Ra's Third Hidden Power; if I pay 1000 of my Life Points, it incinerates the Monsters on the field, regardless their Attack Value."

"But, even if you are able to use it's Special Ability to destroy the Monsters on the field, you still won't be able to reduce my Life Points." Jonouchi reminded. "That means you can't defeat me on this turn."

"If that's what you wish..." Marik sighed. "'Egyptian God Phoenix'." he readied the final attack.
