The young woman thanks the waitress. She put down her phone and ate her lunch. How long has it been? Ten, twenty, fifty? Time in the Pit moved differently. She looked around. Almost everyone was on their phones. Fools. What they had up here, everyone took things for granted.
After she finished her lunch, she paid and left the restaurant. It was the little things she enjoyed, like the crisp fall air, as well as the crunch of fallen leaves on cold ground. Better than that world she left behind. She scoffed at herself. Like being here was any better. All her life she played the good girl, going to church, praying for forgiveness, always being the patron saint of goodness. What did it cost her? A first class ticket to Hell.
She was uncomfortable doing this, but why not? Being a virgin was overrated anyways. She smiled as she took off her clothes. The man wasn't her type, but he was polite enough. She laid down naked on the bed, might as well enjoy herself, she had no orders from her bosses at the moment and wanted to relax and have fun.
Billie yawned as she listened to the tour guide. He was babbling on the origins of Thomas Edison, and how he changed mankind for the better.
"And here is the first telephone!"
Billie was bored stiff. But she needed a interesting subject to write for her paper. Why did she take history? She hated it in high school, but she was a good student and it helped her get this scholarship. She did take notes, just in case. After the tour ended, she went home to study.
"Hey." Billie greeted the hunters. They just grunted at her. She smiled politely at them, telling them supper was at six. "George, you are in charge of kitchen cleanup tonight." He grunted back without looking up. 'Okay, then.' So much for conversation. Billie was just a landlord. She sighs as she goes to her room.
She was studying for her midterm when the house phone rang.
"Halliwell Manor. Hello?" Nothing but static. Click. Weird. Billie saw the caller ID, SHA33. Thinking nothing of it, she returns to studying.
"Yeah, don't worry Paige, I'm watching this place like a hawk. The hunters that are staying, they managed to pay their bills on time, and clean up after themselves." Billie was hired to be the landlord of the manor once Paige moved out. She was allowed to live here with cheap rent if she checked in and out guests whenever they came to town. There was anti angel, monster and demon signs everywhere, they wanted their guests to be comfortable. Billie couldn't believe how many hunters came to San Francisco, she didn't think things were that bad. There was a few witches, but not many to Billie's disappointment. She always was looking for new ways to practice her magic. "Just two this week, they paid for two weeks, cash. Their names are George and Jason. I don't know. Hunters I guess. Uh, huh. Yep. Okay. If anything major happens, I'll let you know. Bye."
Billie was writing her paper an hour later when the phone rang again. Frustrated, she slammed her laptop shut.
"Halliwell residen...Oh! No you must want Piper, she doesn't live here anymore. Phoebe? You can try her email." Billie knew Sacred Meadows was a private hospital, it wasn't listed in any phone company, potential patients had to be referred by word of mouth. She wasn't foolish to give out any numbers, all the sisters shared a dummy email which was checked sporadically. Most were spam, but occasionally a new witch or hunter will ask for help, which they usually send them contact information to Magic School or more senior hunters. "Name?" Her eyes went huge. "You sure you don't want to call your sister? Okay." Billie didn't argue, she herself did what he did and fought evil alone when she first got into her powers. "Okay, rates are..." She wrote down his info. "Okay, fyi, cash only. I'll be seeing you soon." She hung up. Why would Piper's sister in law's brother calling here? Boston was far from California. She got up to get his room ready, he was a few hours away.
Devon yawned as he saw the sign on the 101 freeway. It took him days to get here, he was traveling all across the country hunting. He turned on the police scanner he carried with him everywhere.
"We have calls about a break and enter, possible 243a, address.." Devon mentally remembered the address. It was most likely a run of a mill break and enter, but demons and monsters, they'll try anything. He was about to pull over to check out his map of the city when he got a call. Pulling in to a random restaurant parking lot, he answered the phone.
"Hey J."
"Devon? Where are you? I called your roommates, they said you moved out." Jenna, ever since she met Dean, she became a hunter to defend herself. Devon knew Dean wasn't happy about it, but knew how stubborn his sister was. She was good, but ever since that incident with those rawheads that attacked them, Dean made his wife quit hunting. Instead, he and Sam went hunting together, with Piper occasionally joining them. Jenna wasn't pleased to be left out, she claimed she was just having a off day. But when Devon called her, he could hear the shakiness in her voice. She was very close to getting her neck ripped out. Good thing Dean carried a taser.
"I needed a change. My little sister is married with a house, and I'm living with roommates. What's wrong with that picture." He joked. He heard her giggles
"You always hated being tied down. How many jobs you had before you quit? The colleges you dropped out of, not to mention the women you left behind. Wait. You sound like Dean."
Devon just laughs. He remembered how he hated Dean when they first met. But after getting to know Dean, he saw how cool he was. He wasn't as bad as the stories he heard, how reckless and impulsive he was, how he and his brother willingly threw people away for each other, but after meeting his wife and sister in law, Dean was more mellow. He wasn't hunting much these days, he fought fires and saved people in a more "normal" way with his new job as a first responder; Sam too, he rarely hunted, he was busy with college, according to Jenna, he was almost finished. He wanted to teach law classes for the university he was attending. Plus the news Dean and Jenna wanting kids. Devon was excited, but remembering the warnings about Armageddon, he quit his job and moved out. He contacted that Murphy guy, that ex-government agent who gave Devon his card a few months ago, and asked for tips.
Now a year later was a hunter. He was still green, but was getting better. He usually stayed in Boston, monsters were everywhere, but felt like the city was limited. He told his two friends he was moving out, both knew about Devon's "second job" and agreed to keep his secret. Devon had no set plan where he was going, but figured to head to San Francisco to start. There was a group of hunters that stayed at the former Halliwell manor, the city was seeing a serge of weird cases. When he called Murphy, he gave Devon the Halliwell's house phone number. Devon just hoped Jenna never found out. If she asks, he could say he was seeing Paige.
"Yeah, life gets boring. I want to see everything. Especially new people."
"Women you mean. What happened to Paige? You two were dating last year, and then kaput."
"It was a fling. Very casual." Paige was cute, but neither wanted a serious relationship. Long distance relationships were hard. Worked for his sister, but not for him.
"Too bad. Anyways, so what's your next step. Not hunting I hope." He heard the worry in her voice. She hunted, but had no clue how hard it really was when she first started. She told Devon, Dean wasn't the only reason she hunted and told him about the nightmares her friends were getting. She also told him about that school she wanted to send her future kids to. How they can protect themselves when the war starts.
"Just doing a road trip." Was the truth, kind of. "I gotta go, I have to check in my room soon." That Billie girl, she was expecting him.
"Okay. Gotta go anyways, Dean's shift starts soon, and I'm gonna see him off. Bye."
"Bye." Devon hangs up the phone. He wanted to pick up dinner, it was after nine. Good thing Californians loved eating healthy, he like his sister was a vegetarian. There was tons of vegan restaurants in San Francisco.
Billie was shaking when she hung up the phone. That phone call, it was her dead sister Christy.
"Hello. Halliwell Residence." Caller ID showed that same weird phone number. "Hello?" The line was static.
"Billie?" Billie almost dropped the phone. No. It couldn't be. "Billie, is that you?" The phone went dead.
"Christy? Hello?" When the phone line started beeping Billie hung up the phone. That was her sister. Even after a decade, Billie recognized that voice. She was older, but Billie would recognize her sister's voice.
"Your sister?" Paige's voice sounded skeptical. "That's impossible. You sure it wasn't a prank call?" She was still away at work, so Billie called her.
"I know my sister's voice. It was her." Billie was in the progress of trying to find the trace of that call, but according to her research, that phone number didn't exist for over a century. Where it came from, Billie had no clue. She heard Paige's sigh.
"Just be careful. Remember that witch hunter Prue had? Stay alert. If you need help, the Book of Shadows is here." The Observatory, it was where they kept most of their magical objects, including the Book.
"I will. Thanks Paige." She hung up the phone. She wondered if ghosts can call. But what about other dimensions? Billie's thoughts were interrupted by the doorbell. She was spooked by that phone call, and was glad another hunter was staying. Both George and Jason were out hunting. She goes downstairs and looked into the doorbell camera. She saw that hunter. "Name?"
Once Devon held up his ID, Billie opened the door. Once Devon paid her, she showed him to his room. He was cute, very cute. "So here's your room, this used to be Paige's room, hope you don't mind." It was kinda girly, Paige still came here on occasion to sleep whenever she wasn't working.
"It's fine." After driving for days, this room was a luxury suite. "Where's the bathroom?" He was embarrassed when he realized he smelled. He forgot about that ghoul he killed before he got here.
Toledo Ohio
Ben Waters was staring at the phone with dread. The phone number flashed with that weird number. He took another sip of his scotch. When the phone stopped ringing, he sighed. He was glad his wife was out, he wouldn't know what to do. His heart stopped when it rang again.
It ranged for five minutes till Ben answered it.
"What do you want with me!" She was dead for over twenty four years.
"Ben. Please."
"Stop calling me." He slammed down the phone. That wasn't her. Linda, his high school sweetheart was killed in that auto accident on their way to prom. Ben gripped with the guilt for years. He didn't try stopping his best friend from drinking. When the phone rang again, he angrily picked it up.
"Prom night. Why didn't you take away the keys?!"
Ben rips the phone out of the wall. It wasn't his fault. His best friend, he was paralyzed from the waist down. He paid the price, but Ben himself lost everything. His love, his girlfriend was dead. He couldn't believe his eyes when the phone rang. That was impossible. Especially when the caller ID flashed SHA33. He stared at it for a full minute till he picked up the receiver.
"Okay. I'll see you soon." He heard her pleas. Picking up his gun from his desk, he placed it under his chin.
San Francisco, California
Billie was watching YouShare, there was a true crime story about an unsolved murder in Toledo, Ohio. A nine year old girl was found dead in her home one year ago. Her death was a mystery, her dad was home and was a police officer. Poor kid. She was found dead in her bed with her throat slashed. Billie looked up when Devon walked in.
"Morning." She was glad she put on her face, she had a early class. Besides, she wanted to make a good expression. Ever since her and JD broke up, she was trying to get back on the dating scene. "Breakfast is self serve. There's cereal, and if you want something hot, there's eggs and pancake mix. Just clean up after yourself." She self consciously touched her hair. Hopefully it was straight. She hated cowlicks. Looking at the clock, she had to get going. She had to go to Sacred Meadows to look in the Book after her classes ended. 'Christy' called again.
Once Billie left, he was eating his cold cereal. He didn't have time to cook, he was busy trying to find his next case. He talked to Jason last night, he was here trying to find that nest of demons. Some blonde chicks that worked as assassins who preferred sexy blonde female vessels wearing tight pleather. Demonatrix. Apparently, they were here trying to steal souls for their demon army by seducing men. Devon found the name funny, and when he asked Jason, he said a witch called them that and the name stuck. Usually, they worked as evil missionary's, whoever was willing to pay their exorbitant fees, they killed on command. They were usually small in numbers, but with things going on, their numbers were growing. Jason was here to try to eliminate the leaders, he asked his best friend for help. George was a former professor that taught demonology and became a hunter after his family was slaughtered while they were camping. He said after he was finished here, he was going to track down that wendigo who was seen in the Red Wood Forest. It was odd, those creatures preferred colder climates, plus were solidarity creatures. George remarked it was most likely a former gold rusher who came to find his fortune during the Wild West. Devon was coming along to help, he wanted to know everything about hunting. He was about to clean his plate when his phone rang.
"Yea." This was an old flip phone, Devon used this exclusive for hunting. According to the caller ID, the area code said 419.
"Is this Agent Montoya?" Devon used various alias, usually from YouSharers.
"Speaking." Devon realized he needed another phone, his fellow hunters said every professional hunter carried different models for every profession. FBI, CIA, State Police, Health and Safety, etc. Luckily flip phones were cheap.
"Um." The woman who called sounded nervous. "I didn't know who else to call. Your partner said you specialize in weird cases."
"How can I help you ma'am." Devon had a friend that lived in Toledo. He was a manager at a local bank, but had a sister that was a hunter.
"My husband, he killed himself last night."
"My sympathies." A suicide? Hopefully it wasn't another nut. He almost was killed by a wraith when he went undercover at a insane asylum as a favor for another hunter. Martin Creaser was a fellow hunter who suffered from PTSD from a hunt he did with a former hunter named John Winchester a few years ago. This was supposed to be a cakewalk, he was just there to keep an eye on the guy. But when people started dying, he had to ask Martin for training. This was one of his earliest hunts. Martin gave him a crash course using chess pieces, he admitted he came here to hunt a monster when so many people died in a short amount of time. When Devon pressed for details, Martin said he used his PTSD as an excuse to check in. He wasn't sure what he was hunting, he said he tried asking for Sam and Dean for help, but both turned him down. He was annoyed at their excuses, and kept calling till both blocked him. He wasn't happy to have a hunter rookie, but he needed help.
Devon only was allowed to stay for the required seventy two hours, he said he was seeing monsters everywhere and was trying to be a hunter to kill them. The doctor checked him in, he said Devon might have an early sign of schizophrenia and had him admitted. Once Devon figured out who Martin was, he started his training.
It was the stories that was exchanged in group that got Devon's attention. Most of the patients described a "shadow" with claws that ate people with a straw. When he asked Martin for details, Martin said he didn't know. He admitted he only asked for help because he couldn't hack hunting anymore. He simply told Devon to keep an eye on Doctor Fuller, it was his patients that kept dying.
Devon, he was under a spell. He kept hallucinating that he was seeing monsters. A fake doctor, and his sister who died in front of his eyes. But it was seeing the boy that scared Devon. That boy, he was nothing, but also not. He kept staring at Devon with a empty stare, till one night. Devon saw the boy in his room. That was the last thing he remembered. He woke up in a bed, tied down with restraints. Devon said that kid was way worse then any monster or nightmare out there. Even God Himself would piss His pants.
It was Martin that got him out. Devon was screaming in his sleep when Martin woke him up. When Martin asked what the hell was wrong, Devon was almost comatose and couldn't speak. Martin was forced to steal drugs from the locked drug cabinet to wake Devon up. After Devon "woke up" he refused to say what was bothering him. He helped Martin track down that monster, a wraith that was disguised as a nurse. It was a hard fight, that wraith managed to escape before she killed another patient. Unfortunately, she sliced that poor girl's wrists as a way to throw off her kills, by sucking out their brains. She managed to escape, by telling two orderlies that Devon and Martin tried murdering a girl, and attacked her when she tried to save her life. Devon was then taken away, with him unsuccessfully trying to convince them that "Nurse Forman" was a monster.
Devon was forced back in that room, tied up and helpless. When he saw Nurse Forman come in, he pleaded with her to let him go. That boy, he grew up in front of Devon's eyes while he was sleeping. He never said a word, but what he showed Devon, was a preview of things to come. He begged for her to listen, that she needs to stop killing people and to start working with hunters.
Nurse Forman just laughed. Called him crazy. When she pulled out her "straw," the spike she used to feed on people's brains, she told Devon she wanted a small taste before she fed on Devon's brains. What happened afterwards, Devon never forgotten her expression. Once she poked Devon, she started sucking, once she took that small sip, she jumped back in terror.
She started screaming. She screamed that a monster was coming, the true monster that laid sleeping since the Beginning. That It was breaking free. She died on the floor, her heart giving out. Devon saw the orderlies running in with Martin behind them.
Devon was freed a few days later when his regular psychiatrist, a "Doctor Mentiroso" asked for his patient to be transferred to his hospital the next town over. Martin, once he saw that dead body, he asked Devon what happened in that room. Devon, knowing how mentally fragile he was, simply said she just dropped dead. Martin didn't seem satisfied with his answer but didn't push. He thanked Devon for his help and said he made arrangements for Devon to be freed, that a fellow hunter was picking him up in a stolen van.
Devon never forgot about those dreams. That Thing he saw, he wished he never seen It. He drank himself to the point of blacking out because of That. He still drank, but only if he kept his mind distracted. Hunting helped, he pretended every monster was that Creature. He forced himself to forget, it was too early for alcohol. Instead he listens to the woman's story.
There was nothing in the Book of Shadows. She turned every page, backwards and forwards, looked at every obscure picture and descriptions of any monsters and spells she could find. She then looked around in the observatory for any clues, The Men of Letters kept files of anything unusual.
Billie sighed after she checked every nook and cranny. She knew she had a class, but didn't care. She even looked through the telescope if Christy was alive. A version of her was, but Billie knew that wasn't her. Depressed, she sat down. When her phone rang, she didn't need to check the ID.
"Hello."
"Billie. I'm alive. Somehow."
"You're dead Christy. Mom and Dad confirmed it." Billie never forgot about that night. Her parents refused to let Billie see Christy's remains, Billie was just a kid. Billie, when she became a witch did her own research, she was hoping her parents were wrong. Unfortunately, her research proved Christy was dead. Who her killers were, Billie was still figuring it out. Whoever this was, it wasn't her sister. "Stop calling. You know who I am, who I know? I'm a witch, and I work with the Charmed Ones." The line was silent. "I also did my research. Death, She won't break the rules. My sister is never coming back." It pained Billie, but she knew Christy was gone. She asked Hannah, and she confirmed Christy was dead. She promised Billie they'll meet again in Heaven, but not for a very long time.
"Don't believe everything you hear. If Eve can get out, so can I.'' The line clicked off.
Billie just stared at the phone. She did see Eve around here a few times, when she asked Hannah, she said Eve had special privileges. She wasn't a ordinary human. She said Heaven won't let any souls out it was too dangerous. If one managed to escape, it would turn into a vengeful spirit, it would turn violent. Souls were immortal, however there was creatures that ate souls. She said if Christy escaped, Heaven would punish her severely. Whoever that was, Billie was determined to find out. When her phone rang again, she angrily answered it.
"What!"
"Whoa! Sorry, I must got the wrong number." When Billie saw the caller ID, she saw the Halliwell's number.
"Wait! Don't hang up!" She recognized Devon's voice. "I'm sorry, I kept getting prank calls all day."
"Can't you block them?"
"You didn't think I tried? Bastard keeps getting through." Billie had no idea how to stop it, that damn phone kept going through. Even here. Hannah kept paging her to call this number. Billie called Hannah and told her to ignore every number that called for her. No exceptions. Then that number called her cell. Billie, in her frustration tried blocking it. It didn't work. Then she turned off her phone. In a last ditch effort, she took out the battery. You can guess what happened next. Billie was afraid she was going insane. She wanted to tell Paige, but she was afraid she was going to be labeled as crazy, and would be forced to be admitted here since she was a witch. When she heard Devon's voice, she had to test him if he was the real deal. "Devon, how's your sister? Is her accommodations alright?" She smiled when he sounded confused.
"My sister? She's still in Kansas. I just called to let you know, I'm checking out." Billie was so glad her phone was back on.
"Oh! You paid for a week. It's only been one night. Was everything satisfactory to your taste? I have to charge you for last night and today, but I can give you a refund for the rest of the week."
"I appreciate that. There's a case in Ohio, and I have to leave town as soon as possible." Devon only had enough gas to leave town, but he had savings and stolen credit cards. He refused to have his sister have this case. She needed to stay out of the life. He knew she was trying to get back in, when he called her earlier asking if she got any weird calls, all she said she just got telemarketers and friends calling. She admitted she was sneaking out to hunt whenever Dean was at work, she befriended a neighbour that was a witch. When she asked Devon about those calls, Devon lied and said some fans were calling and asking for her. Jenna just told him to block those calls, she had some new stalkers thanks to that movie she made last year that was being released in a few weeks. She and Dean were flying to Los Angeles for the premiere with Piper and Sam for the event. She didn't want to go, but she had a contract with the producers. She was bringing her two guests, both Sam and Piper were at a movie set with her and helped saved someone's life.
"You said Ohio? Hmm. Devon, is it okay if I came along? I can save you gas money and time. Just meet me at work. I'll give you directions."
Billie was getting better at her magic, she duplicated Paige's traveling spell. Once she memorized the spell, she went outside to wait for Devon. While she was waiting, she clicked on The Bay Mirror's society page.
'A Real Life Romeo and Juliet Story. San Francisco's Own Feuding Families, Echoes Shakespeare's Tragic Love Story.'
Billie was reading about the endless feud between the Montanas and Calloways when Devon pulled up. Once Billie directed him to the parking area, she led him inside once she got him a visitor's pass.
"Is this the famous clinic I heard so much about? It's beautiful." Devon was in awe. This place looked like a country club. He looked up at a statue. Hmm.
"That belonged to Penny Halliwell. The sisters didn't want her, so she came here." Personally Billie thought it was an eyesore, but she didn't say anything. "Follow me, I'll take you to the Observatory." She knew visitors weren't allowed inside, but Devon was Piper's in law's brother. Hopefully Paige didn't mind.
Devon couldn't believe it. This place was even more cooler.
"It's like the X-Men!" He never thought witches had something like this. Looking around, he saw mirrors, a giant telescope, and a giant book. "Is that the famous Book?" He wanted to look at it.
"Yep. It's even more cool if you know magic. It's been around forever. Okay. Ready?" She told Devon about the traveling spell, how she knew she can take them everywhere.
Will it hurt?" He asked nervously. He hated flying, he always got airsick.
"Paige never complained. Grab my hand. If things go right, we'll be home by midnight." Hopefully things don't take that long. They shimmer away.
Lanie was staring at the monitor in fear. Her mom was standing right behind her.
COME TO ME. COME TO ME. COME TO ME. COME TO ME. COME TO ME. COME TO ME. COME TO ME. COME TO ME. COME TO ME. COME TO ME. COME TO ME. COME TO ME. COME TO ME. COME TO ME. COME TO ME. COME TO ME. COME TO ME. COME TO ME. COME TO ME. COME TO ME. COME TO ME. COME TO ME.
She collapses on the floor sobbing. Her mom was dead for last three years.
Devon was looking around with disbelief.
"Where are we?" This was NOT California. It was COLD. He shivered in his jacket.
"Ohio." Billie was kicking herself for not dressing warmer. She saw everyone giving them strange looks. Both were dressed for the California weather. "I have money, we need to hit the nearest mall first."
"So, this is where you got that phone call?" Billie and Devon rented a car and pulled up to a impressive looking house. "So he was a banker?" In San Francisco, that house alone would be worth over a million, at least. "Why would a suicide case call the FBI?" She heard of Piper's adventures.
"Just follow me." Billie was wearing a fitted suit, not her style, but she got the inspiration from Dana Scully, one of the protagonists from the X-Files. Her ID was Agent Anderson, she was partners with Agent Montoya. Devon walks up to the door and knocks. Once they show their badges, Ben Water's widow lets them in.
"Did your husband act strangely before he died?" Since Devon was the one she called, he was asking the questions. Billie had no clue was she was supposed to do, she never faked this before. She was checking around for anything unusual, hex bags, sulfur, etc.
"Not at first. He stayed up most nights." Nancy was still shaken. Her husband was still twitching when she found him. But that wasn't what scared her, it was the dark feeling in the room. It felt evil.
"Was that so unusual?" He saw Billie peeking under the desk where Ben Waters killed himself.
"Not really." She sniffled. "He almost always worked late. His job was always demanding. But two weeks ago, Ben started acting strange."
Billie was staring at the phone. It was put back on the desk, but she saw the dried specks of blood on the receiver. When she saw a tear on the wall, she saw it was from the phone cord. With the age of cell phones, why does anyone use landlines anymore?
"Strange how?" Billie felt uneasy standing in that spot. It felt like heavy mojo was used recently. Ever since her working for the Charmed Ones, her magical senses were getting stronger. Devon was right, this wasn't a typical suicide.
"Ben and I." Nancy sighed. "We weren't getting along. He was working hard, and was almost never home. I met a man." She saw Devon and Billie exchanging glances. "I know. It was a mistake. It ended as fast as it began. Ben forgave me, and we were seeing a marriage counselor. Then two weeks ago, Ben started acting weird. He started getting up in the middle of the night, and I found him in his office with a bottle of scotch."
"Did he drink often?" Devon was writing this down, Murphy told him taking down notes will help him put together clues to solve anything unusual.
"He never drank, not since that car accident in high school." Nancy remembered reading it. Poor kids. "He never liked talking about it, one of his classmates was killed in that car crash."
Billie noticed the phone was electronically plugged. She started looking through the dictionary. When she saw the number SHA33, her blood went cold. She started trembling. Devon saw her expression, her face was white.
"Was there any unusual phone calls?" Billie never said a word, but her expression made Devon wonder.
"At first I thought he was having a affair to get me back. He kept saying Linda. But, when picked up the phone, there was nothing but static."
"Christy."
"Excuse me?"
"Thanks for your time. Again, sorry for your loss." Devon had to get Billie out of there. "Agent."
Once they were in their car, Devon asked Billie what was going on.
"Who's Christy?" When he mentioned her name, Billie teared up. "Was she someone special in her life?"
"She was my sister." Billie then proceeded to tell him her story. Devon was shaking his head.
"She's dead. That's impossible." He knew Billie was a witch, and heard stories from other hunters, that ghosts existed. But he never heard of ghosts calling long distance without a psychic or medium. Billie was one, but he knew Ben Waters was not.
"I know that! But with things going so weird, things are not the same anymore." It was a long shot, but if Christy was calling, she may tell Billie why everyone was so afraid these days. Their grandma was a witch, she passed on her magical genes to Billie and possibly Christy.
"Let's solve this case first. Then we'll figure out yours."
They looked up that number, "SHA33" was a old number, it was used close to the turn of the twentieth century. They went and tracked down that number to a local phone company. After Devon threatened that guy working with a threat of firing, he reluctantly gave them a list. Ten numbers, all in a span of two weeks. They went and checked everyone of them.
Ben Waters. Lucy Blaco. Robert Greenfield. There was seven others, all were in Milan. Billie was scratching her head, every one of those calls were local, all using landlines. She lived in San Francisco. She knew it was supernatural in nature, when she and Devon dug deeper, they found out everyone of those houses had a dead loved one.
"Coincidence? Nope. I can look it up in the Book." Billie was disappointed it wasn't Christy, she had a feeling it was something dark. Demons? Maybe. She was debating on telling Paige, but this was Devon's case, and he made it clear he didn't want Jenna finding out what he was doing.
Once she left, Devon drove to Robert Greenfield's home.
Lanie was listening in on her father's conversation. When that man said SHA33, her heart started beating. She waited till they were done. She waits till her father leaves the room and follows that man out.
"Wait!" She runs up to Devon. "That number." She then proceeds to tell him about her mom.
Billie was reading the Book when her phone rang.
"What do you want Christy." Billie knew that wasn't her, but in order to solve this case, she played along.
"I know who killed me."
"WHAT! Who?" It was a long shot, but 'Christy' called her on her cell. That phone company only had records of Milan residents. Billie's number was not on it.
"It was a demon. He's back in Milan. Billie. Be careful. He's after you next." The phone went dead.
"Christy. Christy?" Billie stared at the phone. Maybe it was her. Maybe it wasn't. Billie packed up some potions and a few crystals. A 'interrogation' should loosen that demon's lips. She tided things up just in case Paige walked in.
Devon told Lanie to stay away from any technology. He managed to save her brother before he walked in the street, luckily Lanie spotted him walking out of the house. It was close, the truck almost hit him. He made both sit inside a salt circle after her dad left the house. He then went back to his motel room to wait for Billie. He had no idea how long she'll be, so he contacted the other six numbers. Lucy Blaco, her husband was killed in Korea. When Ben pressed for details, she admitted they had phone sex. Devon was incredibly grossed out. He fought and saw ghosts, but that was nasty. The other five, four said they changed their numbers, yelled at that person their joke was sick. The last one of Devon's list, there was no answer. He was reluctant to call anyways, the last number belonged to a cop. He turned on his laptop, he needed to now what kind of creature this was.
"Hi Daddy."
"Baby, you promised not to call me anymore." Her voice. Ethan teared up hearing it. Her mom left them both when she was just a baby. His daughter was his world. Till he found her body next to a open window. Her death haunted him since.
"I know daddy. I just miss you. It's lonely here."
Ethan closed his eyes. he remembered that night. He was the main suspect in her murder. But he was cleared when evidence showing there was a intruder. His department tried, but her murder was never solved.
"I miss you too, but you should go to the angels." Ethan never said yes, but he wondered if the angels abandoned his family for his refusal.
"I rather go to Heaven with you."
"It's too soon honey." Ethan was never religious, but suicide wasn't the answer. He knew he would be separated from her forever.
"Daddy. The person who hurt me. They are going to our house."
Once she hung up, Ethan stares ahead. he still had a few hours left, but he was going to confront that guy. Vigilante justice. He'll solve this case himself.
"A what?" A crocotta? The hell is that? "Why would that thing use phones?" Devon wasn't a hunter long, but he knew most monsters weren't bright.
"It's a version of the Boogyman. Mimics a loved one, and then eats your soul. It hasn't been seen for years. It lives in filth, sounds familiar?" That phone tech, Devon remembered how sloppy and messy that office was.
"Sorry it wasn't your sister." Devon saw Billie's tears. It that was his sister, Devon would do the same thing.
"I know. Devon, you need to stop it."
"I will. Thanks Billie." Devon hangs up the phone. He had a weapon, it was meant to kill anything.
Billie was waiting in the house. She already made a Devil's Trap, put down some crystals, and had her potions ready. Most were painful to demons, it wouldn't hurt the vessel. She had to solve this case once and for all, so Billie can move on with her life. She sat and waited. She didn't call Devon, this was personal.
Devon waited till nightfall to confront the crocotta. When he saw Stewie, he gets up to kill him. But before he could do so, he passed out when something hit him over the head.
Stewie was terrified when he saw Clark. But he had no choice but to obey orders. He helped carry him inside.
Ethan was staring at the young woman. He expected a man, not a college student. But he was in law enforcement long enough to not judge by apperances. What happened next, he was in disbelief. He was stuck in a magical cage.
"Who. Who are you?"
"I could ask the same thing." Billie said coldly. "Why Christy? She was just a kid." That demon. He used that poor father to kill his only daughter and used the phone company to track down Billie.
"Christy? My daughter's name was Vanessa. She was nine. Nine! Are you a witch? You killed my daughter for your evil sacrifices?"
"You watch too many movies. Most witches don't sacrifice humans. Especially children. My sister! Why kill her!" She uses one of the crystals to torture Ethan. Ethan screams.
Devon watched grimly as the crocotta stabs Stewie and ate his soul.
"Ah that hit the spot. Stewie here wasn't a candidate for the Academy. You two. I know hunters when I see one. Your pretty friend there, she is a powerful witch." He saw Devon's expression. "Yeah. I been recruited by Hell. They need soldiers. I managed to get one, Ben Waters. Why they want him is a mystery. But what do I know, I'm not a demon."
"That was you on the phone wasn't it." Devon wanted to kick himself for being stupid. He should have called Billie back to confirm it was her. Dean told him a good hunter double checks everything.
"Yep." He goes to the phone board and lights up every switch. "Ah! You see that? I'm getting more candidates. Your sister, she'll make a fine lieutenant."
Devon became a hunter to protect his family. He'll be damned that Clark or whatever his name was gets her. He breaks the rope. Luckily Sam showed him some tricks when he was a amateur magician. Breaking out of ropes and handcuffs was their specialty.
"I didn't kill your sister!" Ethan was laying on the bottom of the magical cage. "Just kill me if it makes you feel better. At least I can see Vanessa again."
Billie threw the final potion. When the demon didn't burn, Billie realized her mistake.
"I'm sorry." Her and Ethan. They lost so much. Luckily, she knew a amnesia spell. "I didn't kill your daughter. But I promise you, I'll help you." Billie knew it was personal gain, but she didn't want Ethan to suffer like her parents. Always looking for answers. She chanted the anti demon spell to be sure Ethan wasn't a demon. She then puts him into a deep sleep.
Devon called Lawrence, he knew Jenna and Dean had a landline for mundane calls, he wanted to make sure they were safe.
"Hello?"
"Hey Dean. Is Jen there?"
"She's at my brother's. Sam and I are having a few beers with some friends." Devon heard classic rock playing with converstions and laughter in the background. "Where are you calling from? I thought you were in San Francisco."
"My friends called and invited me for their party." He lied. He saw Clark's body on the wall. Devon unintentionally pushed him against a huge nail. Devon just hoped the police never knew him and Billie were involved. "Did you get any weird calls?"
"Just a prank one. Some guy called pretending to be dad." He heard Dean chuckle. "C'mon. I know about witchcraft. I told Ruby to fuck off."
Once Devon called Jenna to make sure she was safe, he goes back to his motel room to wait for Billie.
"So that thing he was recruiting for that Academy?" Billie was disappointed. She was no closer to finding Christy's killer. "You know I have to report this to Paige." Anything big as this, the Charmed Ones had to be in the loop.
"Just leave my name out of this."
"Promise." Billie will just tell him a hunter called for help. Luckily she forgot to write down Devon's name in the ledger. She'll burn her notes. "So what now?" It was late here, but still early in California.
"Well, I need a ride back. Maybe we could order a vegetarian calzone." He and Billie were wired from their fight.
"I know a great takeout, both Jason and George are out hunting and won't be back till sunrise." They were hunting vampires. She and Devon looked shyly at one another.
The cop that was in the same locker as Ethan was looking at the house. He wasn't interested in Ethan, he couldn't get to him anyways. He had a powerful spell on him, protecting him from all evil. That witch, she was more powerful than she looked. Asmodeus transformed back to his southern gentleman look. He lost Christy, but her sister was still alive. He'll get to her. But first train his newest students. Lucy and Ben would be great strategists.
