Tales of the Inari King and Woodland Queen

Chapter 19

0

June 20th.

The summer solstice was close at hand and Yugi found himself out of the house more often to help with setting up. The spirits were delighted to see Yugi indulge himself with more of the preparations, adding his own spin onto the planned activities arranged by Atemu already. They were clearly ecstatic and Yugi equally so in excitement to see a few of his own ideas come into play during the solstice. When they had downtime, Atemu made it his job to cater to all of his mate's needs. While he wasn't as stressed as he was within the first week of his father's return, the attention was sorely needed. Yugi knew his father was still skeptical and suspicious about Atemu's involvement with the family and while it was a noble effort, it was one aiming to have him tear his own hair out in exasperation. But with each visit, Atemu vowed that by the time Kazuto was ready to return overseas to continue the empty monotony of office work, he would know of Atemu's importance to the Motou household and his position to his son.

The queen never doubted his king so he valued the words that were promised. When he was at home, Yugi was hard at work with the second installment for Spherium. The details were almost fully fleshed out and once it was, he could send it off to Kaiba for inspection. He hoped that the project would be greenlit and go into immediate production. He could only hope that with this second piece, his legacy would be immortalized to continue far beyond his life expectancy. Yugi wanted to be able to leave the world knowing that his game had made an impact in the gaming world. Today was no different. Yugi bowed over his desk, putting in the final set of notes to prepare to deliver. He only had a couple days before the solstice arrived so he wanted to be sure all was done before he was gone for a day or two. Too busy in his work, he didn't hear the knock on his door frame until a voice spoke, making him raise his head quickly.

"Yugi..."

At the call of his name, Yugi turned to face his father who stood in the doorway to his room. The two stared at one another before Yugi raised a hand to halt the first syllable ready to spill from his lips. "If this is in any way about where I'll be in the next few days, I would advise not. I am in safe hands and among good company." Kazuto sighed, whispering if he couldn't even feel safe for his son. Yugi turned back to his desk, gathering his papers to put into a manila envelope. "To fear my safety is fine, I won't shame you for that. But again, you still find suspicion in my choice of partner without giving him a proper chance. If you didn't condemn him with just the mere sight of him at the dinner he was willing to come out for, then you would know him as mama and jii-chan has. I could tell you everything—"

"Then why won't you?!"

The rise of Kazuto's voice made Yugi jump, bringing him to turn and face his father who wasn't red in the face from anger but the flush of his cheeks were getting there. Seeing he had Yugi's attention, he let out a sigh, leaning against the door frame. "I know to ask you to come with me so suddenly would be met with opposition but I still hoped for support or at least a few days to think it over. But since meeting this Atemu, everyone treats me like the enemy. I can understand that it's in part for dropping my phone calls to you, your mother and my father but more seems to be on how he thinks of it. He has you all wrapped around his fingers and as a husband and father, it scares me, Yugi. Especially for you." He stepped into the room now, moving closer to the other as he continued to speak. He missed the small, little boy who was timid of the world around him, hiding behind his legs during preschool and eventually found solace in games once he had left and learned the stories through the calls back in those days. "I missed my special little man. If I could change things, change my purpose in life, I wouldn't have taken that offer. I would've stayed home with you, been a proper influence and not let you spiral down into this."

Yugi was touched but even with such honesty in his words, he knew nothing would change. With the words Atemu told him, he would've been found even if he had no bully problems that brought him to the mystifying rumors of the old shrine that Atemu resides in. He was born with a fae heart that lay dormant for so long. It would have awoken in time and when it did, calling out for the spirits of nature, Atemu would find him. Perhaps if things had gone differently, Kazuto would've known of Atemu proper than he did now but this was the road he walked and the choice he made. "Papa, your words touched me and I too wish things could've been different for us. To have a closer connection than one so strained from time apart. But even so, I'm sure I would've met Atemu and grown to love him just as much as I do now. The only difference is you'd know him better than having to wait. After the summer solstice, that's all I ask of you. Wait until then and you'll have the answers you seek. Atemu would never steer me wrong and hasn't for the family either. You just have to believe me."

The man gritted his teeth at the mere mention of waiting, wishing to have the answers now. Alas, to force Yugi for those answers would only prove the point that he couldn't be trusted with this information. If it was incriminating enough, he could put Atemu away for good and the family would finally be free of this grip he held upon them. Guess he can only listen to the words spoken and just...wait. With a sigh, Kazuto relented, telling Yugi that dinner will be done in an hour. "Chicken dumplings and miso. Reichiru is making them that special way of hers." Yugi nodded, turning back to his desk to seal the envelope to deliver to the KaibaCorp building on the way to the shrine. I'll be gone on the 19th, Yugi spoke quietly. "Festival is on the 20th and I won't be back home until late on the 21st. If you trust me, do not follow me." Kazuto stayed silently, nodding before leaving the room and shutting the door. Yugi could feel his father's frustrations and the sad reality is that his father didn't see the same in him.

It was a struggle to keep everything bottled up, not just the secret of Atemu being a fox spirit but just the sheer frustration of a man who was so determined to see all the wrong in their relationship. He counted his blessings that his father wasn't ignorant and in denial, at least not completely, about his choice of partner. He wouldn't know what he would do if he had to deal with the general disdain of elders and their outlook on same sex couples. He remembered the looks at the game's opening, those scathing glares as Atemu was announced as his partner and inspiration. But Yugi had ignored those stares, took pride and confidence of being happy for his success. And he didn't have to worry about anything since. The children adored the game, even a few teenagers and adults. He had made something that had made people happy and that would carry on for years. Yugi was proud of Spherium and wanted his father to be proud of it too. There were still two months left, they had to make it work.

Kazuto has to understand, Atemu will make him see the truth in everything. It was a given he was too far gone to get the same gifts as Atemu gave to his mother and grandfather, but at least there will be closure and that's all Yugi could ask for. A hum left him, sitting back in his desk chair. There wasn't much else to do til dinner so he decided to dig out one of his old consoles to play a game or two. It would keep his mind busy for now until dinner, reminding himself whenever the thoughts came unbidden that he did what he did because one can't be dropped suddenly into the world he was a part of. Things had to be taken slow even if it took more time in the case of Kazuto.

Soon, the day arrived, Yugi making sure all things were packed, ready for the overnight stay after the festivities and gave a hug to his mother and grandfather. Kazuto watched from afar, still affronted about how willing his father and wife were about his son going to this grand celebration but once more had to remind himself of his shaky place among them. He didn't understand their trust of these things and of Atemu himself. There was something they knew that they refused to speak on until the man himself came to tell him. It was infuriating but trust is all he had left. If he couldn't trust his son that the truth would come out soon, then he would have lost the last tie to keep him connected with the family he had barely talked to since moving away. Yugi entrusted this last chance to him, Kazuto couldn't ruin it now by commanding him to stay home. "Have fun and give Atemu our regards. We hope to invite him again for dinner soon. Sugoroku here is getting up there in age so we have to make the most of our time with him. Reichiru spoke, making the older man chuckle that he wasn't out of the game yet.

Yugi smiled as well, waving to them, even his father, before he was out the door. Kazuto had felt his spirits lift just a little at such a simple gesture. It wasn't much but it was enough that even for his constant needling, Yugi still held hope for him despite his frustrations. It made a smile cross the father's face before Sugoroku shooed him off to work the counter while he swept outside. Reichiru admonished him to not work too hard before she headed back into the sitting room to relax. The game shop was lively with customers and Kazuto was left to work without a single thought going back to Yugi and this mysterious gathering he attended at every turn of the seasons. With Yugi, he was well on his way, light on his feet like the winds were nipping at his heels. A smile so bright graced his face with all the warmth of the sun as he walked along the familiar path to take him to the shrine. He was so excited for tomorrow! The food, the dancing, the games!

This was a summer that he could only dream about. Atemu told him he even had a special request put in for their outfits this time and couldn't wait to see what was prepared by their favorite karasu artisan. Passing the busy crossroads when prompted, Yugi began to think about what was to come two days from now. Atemu will finally reveal himself in full to his father to finally end the cycle of wrongful speculations about him. But will his father accept it so easily? There were still fears about it all but knew that his decision was sound. Yugi wouldn't be forced from Atemu even by the request or demands of his father and Atemu wouldn't let him try either. There were enough stories and myths about the kitsune and all of them usually aiming to be bad, especially the famous story of Tamamo no Mae. Anyone would have at least heard the story once and for its storytelling, it was enough to make anyone fear the foxes that roam freely among them.

If the reveal made his father think of that story and think Atemu was exploiting them, Yugi can only imagine the harsh trial to come if Kazuto truly tries to find a monk with the power of purification. Atemu certainly was powerful enough that if a miko couldn't be rid of him, surely even the best monk couldn't do the same without gregarious punishment towards himself and his father. Yugi really hoped it didn't come to that as that would be the last chance for redemption. If Atemu doesn't accept him then Kazuto would be practically ousted from the family by that point. Atemu wouldn't want misfortune outside of his influence to ruin the family he accepted and would do what's right to correct it for his queen's safety and that of his relatives. It was a harsh reality but such is the life of the mysterious world hidden right before their very eyes.

Yugi shook his head free of such burdensome thoughts, reaching the shrine in no time flat and smiled as it was welcomed with a torii gate decorated with summer blossoms from daisies to marigolds. It held everything warm and inviting about summer and too quickly did Yugi dig out an ofuda charm to open the way into the spirit world. Gate open, Yugi went through, landing in the forests familiar to him and smiled, twirling among the shade of their great boughs before the winds ushered him along with haste. His beloved king awaits his arrival. Yugi's feet were moving at their behest, winds whipping his bangs against his face like gentle kisses to welcome their queen. The birds chirped and cried in the skies and the deer bleated from between the massive trunks of the trees. A small fawn even kicked out to join his spirited run. Yugi laughed in delight, greeting all around him happily as he broke through the forest and into the wide open space of the fields, tall grasses shimmering like waves cresting against an invisible shore.

And in the middle, like a dark pillar of stone, was the king in all his vulpine glory, obsidian fur a beacon in the sunlight to call upon his queen towards his brilliance. Yugi was awash by his splendor, once more floored by how lucky he was to have such a proud and mighty creature of nature personified his mate and husband. Then, those blazing scarlet hues turned to gaze into his own violets, capturing him in their deep pools of molten fire as a grin of the sly fox crossed his muzzle. The winds brushed against Yugi once more and he was down into the fields, running through the tall grass to reach Atemu, the king standing only briefly before he was gone into the deep grass. Yugi laughed, reaching the spot where he had seen the other and looked around, knowing the clever king was sharking about and ready to pounce. A rustle of the verdant blades and Yugi squealed in surprise as a body rose between his legs, lifted by Atemu who laughed. "Welcome home~" Atemu cooed, tilting his head back to allow Yugi to run his hands through his fur.

"Glad to be home. I'm so excited to see how the summer solstice plays out." Yugi replied as he held onto the fur of the other as Atemu began trotting off for his warren. As they traveled, Atemu asked of how things had been at home and Yugi told him things were still a little tense. He wanted to be honest with his father but the constant wrongful speculations about the king made him tight lipped and irritable. No matter how much Yugi tries to validate Atemu's innocence and importance to the family with his divine role catering to them, his father was too thick-headed even when he only wants to find redemption with him. "I feel that if I keep trying, it will only burn me out in the end. I know he means well, trying to make amends with everyone including me. But this constant belittling towards you, knowing full well it's an insult to you, hurts me. I know he wants to come back into my life and make up for his mistakes but...I just can't accept that if he continues thinking this way about you. You're my heart...and mean so much." Yugi whispered, sniffling a bit which had Atemu stopping.

You can't fault a man for being blind to the spirit world, Atemu began, turning his head so he could look to his mate. "I knew just by stepping into the room that he would be a difficult one. His heart does speak true of his redemption but the very same, he is a stubborn creature born and bred to the mortal realm. Strangers to him could only mean bad and should be removed if they are a threat. He still has the drive to protect you but the misunderstanding has him unaware that I have taken his place in that protection. If Kazuto is a father worthy of my respect, then once he understands the position I take and the one that has been blessed, he will not change from being your father even when I cannot in the right mind give him the same benefits as your mother and grandfather. I do not take kindly to abandonment and this has been something deeply buried in your heart." Yugi rubbed his eyes free of tears, smiling softly and thanked Atemu for his input on everything.

I'm glad that none of this has been difficult on you, Yugi murmured, just the mere thought of being a troublesome bother to Atemu would eventually drive him away. This warranted a slight bounce from Atemu, making the smaller male squeak as the fox laughed. "You couldn't be rid of me unless you were the cruelest being ready to abuse my power. But I know you well enough and would never do such a thing when you yourself have been through it before." Yugi smiled, leaning in to hug Atemu around the neck before he was off once more, reaching the warren and allowing Yugi to climb down. Yugi bowed to the king before heading down and when he cleared the wooden stairs, Atemu jumped down after him, nuzzling against his side before trotting off further through the hall.

Quickly following after him, it didn't take long before Yugi was assaulted by two little kudagitsune who ailed to see him after so long. The queen cooed fondly as they pranced about his body, cuddling around his neck and nuzzling his cheeks. "They've missed you terribly but couldn't have the little troublemakers at the festivals without risking them calling more of their brethren and cause problems." Yugi understood, remembering the bit of mess they caused before. it wouldn't do them good in presentation if they made a mess of everything that was so preciously gathered together. Yugi stroked the back of the golden kudagitsune, apologizing that Atemu was right and they had to stay behind. "But don't you worry, you'll get to join a festival one day. We'll have our own, even!" Atemu chuckled as Yugi chatted with the kudagitsune, moving to grasp his bag with his teeth to put into the bedroom.

Atemu transformed back once he unloaded the bearings of Yugi's bag, smirking a little as he moved to the bed where two parcels sat. One was already opened, the red fabric standing out from the woven grass wrapping. Threading fingers through his fur, he pulled out a braided line of fox fur, typing back his hair before reaching into the box to pull out the outfit. He knew it was for tomorrow but how can he resist showing off for his queen. It was in his blood to display himself for the love of his life, watching those cheeks turn apple red and his eyes darken to a sweet mulberry shade fueled by those wild desires that made his fae heart sing. The cloth flowed like water, pulled together with a quick wrap of an additional cloth around the waist. With everything folded and tied as it should be, Atemu took a glance into the mirror to observe and was pleased by his appearance. A little touch of makeup and he would be divine. But that would be saved for tomorrow. For now...

Atemu stepped through the parted curtain of his doorway, returning to the main room where Yugi now sat with the kudagitsune curled around his neck. Yugi~, the fox cooed, grabbing Yugi's attention and he turned, ready to acknowledge the call when his throat went dry and his tongue sticking to the roof of his mouth at the sight of his mate. "Do you like it~ I wanted to go with something a bit more traditional for the solstice this year and prepared us with matching outfits. I couldn't help myself in wanting to show mine off a little sooner than later." Yugi had nothing to say cause what was there to say? Atemu was breathtaking. Clad in warm reds, the fiery spirit to embody the fox was very much shown in this piece of clothing. A modest yukata carried the pattern of spider lilies embroidered into the fabric, their golden luster making them stand out in the candlelight of the den. The obi pulled it all together, another pattern fabric with curls of flames etched in by colorful threads, making it stand out against the bronze silk edged in red that reminded Yugi of the very ends of a sunset at the horizon.

"What do I say? What can I say except it's gorgeous. You're gorgeous, Atemu." Yugi breathed, moving from his seat and gently unwound the kudagitsune from their place to set them in his previous spot. Atemu grinned, sauntering over to him and looped his arms around his queen's neck. Then, you approve, yes? The question was teased with all the cunning air of his kitsune partner. Yugi only nodded, pressing himself more into his mate's embrace, face buried into the strong chest and felt the summer warmth and familiar spiced aroma of cinnamon and sandalwood that was always present.

Atemu couldn't help the smile to cross his face, lowering his head down to whisper into Yugi's ear. Yours is in the other room if you like to look, he purred sweetly and Yugi couldn't help but nod. He couldn't form any more words as he brought his gaze back up to his wondrous husband and all the glory he presented just from merely standing there. Atemu pulled back and guided Yugi into the bedroom to look upon his outfit. When the curtain closed behind the two and the torches extinguished themselves, viewing Yugi's choice of clothing for the festival tomorrow wasn't all they divulged in for the night.

The morning was a whirlwind of excitement. Deep in the open field, tables were being set up and activities settled in their places. Archery, a ring for exhibition fights and a race were all ready to be indulged in. Food was slowly being laid out, a number of summer dishes made from the hard picked bounties gathered days ago. Delicious scents wafted from the tables, watering the mouths of many who were ready to eat but kept respectful as the king and queen hadn't arrived yet. But the grandest piece was what laid in the center. A large, carved pole stood as a mighty pillar in place, set up by Yusei and Aki. This was the task they were sent to do by Atemu, having the help of the local oni to carry the pole back to the festival grounds so they could have it ready. The pole was beautiful, carved intricately with the symbols of the Four Directions, patron gods who were the great overseers of the spiritual realms.

They weren't as outspoken as the earthen mother but were always watching all of the spirit realm, only choosing to lend their service when it was truly in danger of destruction. Runes, vines and flowers decorated the open spaces in between the gods, silken ribbons flowing in the gentle gusts to finish off the maypole that would be the peak of the festivities. Aki smiled at the hard work put into the maypole, proud that she had been contracted by the king himself to help one of his loyal courtiers. She glanced at Yusei, feeling her face warmed by the sight of the tiger spirit. No one of such strength and regality existed in the decayed forests. The vile, insipid spirits that lived under Dartz's rule were as cruel and unfeeling as the weasel himself and she has abhorred it.

She knew she could never be like them, to curse the name of the inari king for the misdeeds they were banished for under their own hand. It had been such a hard life full of strife from the obligations Dartz has expected of her. But after the appearance of the king for his queen, Aki knew that was never her place. She may not have been wanted in the place where she was born but the decayed forests were infinitely worse. For that, Aki was grateful that she resisted the call of hibernation to get to the beautiful land lovingly cultivated by Atemu. The nekomata knew she had a home here and perhaps, if luck favored her well for her good deed, a mate to call her own. If he was willing to try of course. "I think the king will love this. Don't you?" Aki questioned, bringing Yusei's gaze towards her. He will, he spoke calmly just the barest quirk of a smile gracing his lips. "You have quite the hand for woodworking. I can see us working together more often if the king requests something special for the queen again in the future." Aki had a small flush of red grace her cheeks at the thought, speaking that she would be honored to help with other projects for the king.

A bark of delight came from behind them, bringing both to turn and seeing Judai barreling towards them, Aki being the first to catch the flighty inugami. Careful now, she spoke, patting his head fondly as the inugami rambled on about all the food present. The nekomata chuckled warmly, telling Judai they will be able to enjoy the wonderful bounty soon enough. "Just be patient for the king and queen to arrive." Judai nodded, Yusei watching the exchange closely. Since her arrival, Judai has warmed up to Aki quickly. He had never deciphered if it was from her turn of loyalty by returning his gift to the queen or a genuine curiosity for the spirit that embodied. Perhaps a little of both. But the tiger did understand that Judai trusted her and has never been wrong about his comfort around a new face welcomed into the spirit realm. Yusei will admit he was wary of Aki when she first arrived beside the king. That everything she'd done was to get in good favor with Atemu before stabbing him in the back in Dartz's name. But Aki never did. Her promise was sound, staying loyal to the king and doing her part to nurture the land.

And Judai was smitten by her generous attention that it nearly made Yusei fear he would be replaced in taking care of him. Perhaps, that was a sign, he mused, knowing well the queen ached to see the loneliness he tried to keep hidden from his eyes. He never wanted the queen to feel guilt for the happiness he procured in the king's presence. That love was a gift for all and only wanted to see it continue to flourish as strongly as it has over the course of the year Yugi had been present in their company. It was clearly a blessing and Yusei shouldn't squander selfishly a blessing granted by the royalty of their lands. First, he had to properly court her and courting was something he hasn't done ever. Maybe the king would grant some of his sage advice to help him get started. As Yusei mused and pondered, the vociferous sound of elation began to rise as two prominent figures crested over the hillock leading down into the clearing.

A doe and a buck eagerly trotted down the grassy knoll with their elegant royals upon their backs. Flowing silks like a butterfly's wing cascaded behind the queen, bearing the image of a thunderous river current of blue to match the fabric to make his kimono. Beside him, the king was bedecked in fire, searing reds and golds catching the sunlight beautifully to make him a beacon of radiance coming to grace their presence for the summer season. Yugi looked at the display of food and games to present itself but what really caught his eye was the maypole to take center stage. It was a crafted marvel of delicately carved symbols and colored silks. He didn't have a good view of the more intricate details on the pole from afar but Yugi can tell that everything to bring out its brilliance was a labor of love and time. Yugi couldn't wait to enjoy all that was prepared just from what he's seen and worked on with Atemu.

When the two reached the landing and into the center of the crowd that parted for them to come through, Atemu smiled as he looked upon the crowd to grace their presence, seeing the familiar faces of Lovell and his pack and their favorite karasu artisan. Even a few oni and local yokai had come, growing fond of Yugi after two seasons to warrant coming down just for a glimpse of his happiness and delight during the festivities. That kind of attention only proves Yugi's divinity in being the perfect queen to rule beside him. If the most wild and untamed creatures came down just to enjoy being in his presence, he was a true royal patron of the land. With that in mind, Atemu motioned for Yugi to sound off the beginning of the Summer Solstice Festival. "Me? Oh I couldn't." he uttered, hinting at a little fear but Atemu didn't allow him to cave. Climbing from the buck, the king stepped over to Yugi and held a hand out to him.

"Never be afraid of the presence you bring to everyone here. You have the power of voice to bring delight and cheer to all who behold it sweet, bell-like toll. The yokai to visit us are smitten to your presence, casting aside their wild ways to sit at our table and enjoy our bounty. They do so because of you, dove. Bring out the queen and speak to your subjects, you know your king is here to help you every step of the way." Yugi breathed in awe, knowing these words are nothing different than what was customary in Atemu's sizable catalog of praise to him. But this held a different energy, of one that praised the queen he knew he was, the queen that was not just accepted by the forest spirits and animal deities but also the ferocious yokai that shed their ferocity to be welcomed to sit at their table. All who attend are not just for the king but for their long awaited queen of the woods and wilds.

Bolstered by his words and confidence, Yugi stepped down from the doe that was his mount, looking to all that were in attendance for the feast and festival and bowed low. "I welcome you all to the Summer Solstice Festival." Yugi began, his voice low at first before he rose up to show his full splendor in the outfit that was tailored for him. It was a rich sky blue fabric with cresting waves lining the hems of his sleeves and the addition of sand dollar embroidery to resemble stars along the space above the white foam of the waves. His obi was done in a pale lavender cloth and attached to the back of it was a small turtle charm to represent the Genbu spirit. This was to match Atemu who had the luxurious pattern of the vermillion bird Suzaku on the back of his yukata in his shades of gold and red, a dusting of red eyeshadow to grace his eyes and make them stand out with the line of kohl winging the corners of his sharp almond gaze. "I'm always honored to be here with you all. You welcome me fondly into your embrace and make all these events so much fun for me. As we come rounding back to the autumn season where I first joined you in merriment, I look back at the memories, of how much we've grown from that point and offer our table to more guests who have shed their wild cloaks to see me." A oni roared with delight at his words, making Yugi smile.

"I can always say it and know you will only reassure me that I will always feel at home here but I still want to thank you all for everything you have been to me. Welcoming me, seeing me as your queen and never speaking ill of me. I strive to continue being the best I can be, with Atemu's help of course." At that, the king chuckled, straightening up proudly at the mention. Yugi giggled, taking his hand to squeeze before finishing the speech. "So let's not dally much longer. With my word as your woodland queen, let the festivities begin! Enjoy the warmth of summer under the eye of our earthen mother! Eat, dance and enjoy our games!" The cheer to come from the crowd was loud and boisterous, roars, growls and claps echoing through the din of energy to surround them. Atemu grinned, pleased by the sight before raising a hand to bring them to silence once more.

"When the sun sets on our merriment, I will welcome a chosen few to join us around the maypole. We shall weave the silks around the pole, ensuring our constant unity to all who watch over us. From our mother goddess to the beasts of Four Directions, we wish to thank them for their constant vigil in keeping our land and us safe from harm." Another round of cheers greeted them and with a motion of the hand from Yugi, the crowd separated to enjoy the festivities. Music began to play as some spirits joined in to dance while others, Judai included, went for the sizable buffet waiting. Yugi stroked the neck of the doe, getting a fond lick in response before she and the buck darted off back into the forest. Atemu stepped up beside him, offering an arm to hum. Shall we, he asked and Yugi nodded as they headed into the din of guests to come and enjoy.

They danced and played, ate their fill and mingled with the guests. The warm summer breeze played around them all, spreading its warmth and joy to everyone present. As time passed, Atemu began to arrange the archery contest while at a different table clear of food and wine, Yugi planned his own. He discussed it with Atemu to get things arranged for him so they had their own version here in the spirit realm and the king delivered on that promise, having the board crafted and pieces carved and ready. It took Yugi a long time to learn it himself but he excelled in it and was happy to be able to share it with the spirits and a few yokai who came to view him playing it with his first challenger. The game was Shogi and it was quite the marvel to those that never saw such a game. Yugi taught them the rules with ease, seeing some catch on quick while others needed extra guidance or preferred to watch. At the archery range, Atemu had taken the lead in the challenge.

He watched challengers come up to show their skill in the bow, aiming to best one another though none ever hit the center. Some hit the outer rings and others missed the mark, having their arrows land in the green. Those that missed were highly disappointed because that meant their scores would be bad by the end which only led to Atemu speaking that everyone participating would receive a reward of some sort. He wouldn't take losing as an answer. "The art of archery, like any other weapon, takes skill. Mistakes will happen." He spoke, taking a bow and quiver handed to him. Shouldering the quiver once he tied his sleeves for full mobility, he drew a single arrow and cocked it onto the bow. "It takes discipline, concentration, strength. But most of all, time." Atemu drew the arrow back, aiming for the target farthest from the pack before unleashing the arrow. All in attendance watched as the arrow flew before sinking dead center into the wood of the target, making a loud cheer to draw Yugi's attention up from his game to see the spectacle in action.

Atemu smirked as he lowered the bow. No one can learn this in a day, not even a month, he spoke as he looked to the crowd gathered around him. "But that doesn't mean it isn't worth trying if you are interested." He finished, passing the bow back to the wood sprite that offered it to him, the sprite starry-eyed as he looked over the bow held by the king before going back to try again with the others. All of them were clearly inspired just by watching Atemu, making the king chuckle before his eyes were drawn to his mate at his spot playing the game he had introduced from home. Seeing the crowd gathered around to try made him smile before seeing he had captured the gaze of his queen watching his demonstration. A grin crossed his lips, raising a hand to wave to him before he was met with the same. A kiss was blown next, making the soft apple red flush his mate's cheeks and bringing another chuckle from him before turning back to the challenge before him. He would call an end for it soon enough. There was food to be had and Atemu was growing a bit peckish for some nourishment under the blazing heat of the summer sun.

Time has passed, joyous laughter and feasting beheld by all in attendance at the solstice festival. Atemu had finished up his rounds and granted everyone who had participated a small parcel with a blessing crafted by his own power. They were told not to open it until they were back in their dens before ushering them to head over to get some food. The plates of crisp fruits and steaming meats had drawn many to partake in its bounty, tongues wetted by fresh wine and juice. After a few rounds of his own, Yugi could feel the hunger gnawing at his stomach and the acute senses of the spirits and yokai around him urged him to feed himself. "All your games were wonderful! We learned plenty, my queen, now it's time to take care of yourself!" One water spirit spoke, an oni nodding in agreement as he held a hand out to the smaller male. Yugi smiled, placing his hand into the massive palm of the other, feeling those thick fingers that could easily break his own curl around his and led him tenderly from his seat. Yugi felt honored but a tad guilty, the oni hunched enough where his stature did not dwarf Yugi, bringing him to the table to settle beside the king.

Atemu thanked the oni, well into his second glass of wine, and leaned in to press his lips to Yugi's cheek. "How were your games?" Yugi grinned and told him everything. Everyone that wanted to learn shogi were very kind and intuitive in learning how to play. Of course, Yugi would win every game but the losses weren't met with rage but the desire to learn more. Yugi planned to offer some time to put aside to do more shogi lessons for the spirits and yokai that wanted to learn. Atemu chuckled, glad that the introduction of the new game went over so well. Lovell had come, bearing a plate of food for Yugi which the queen thanked him for and began to eat. Spirited music continued to play around them, spirits and fae dancing to the music after having their fill of food while some tested their mettle in fighting prowess or speeda all under watched by Atemu from the table. Yugi munched away on his meal while Atemu enjoyed his wine, sitting back in his seat with a lofty sigh. "Yugi, my darling dove...are you sure in your need to find amends with your father?"

Yugi paused mid bite into an apple, lowering the fruit as he mulled over the thought. Of course he wanted to make amends with his father, that was the whole purpose of his visit. But he could also understand the reason behind his question. If Kazuto didn't accept the truth, then it was likely that Atemu would be forced to wipe the memories of all he has witnessed and knows. To know the secrets of the spirit world could prove harmful if Kazuto tries any harder in trying to remove Atemu's presence, especially when his mystical presence is found out. "I still do. I know he has been nothing but a source of stress for me since arriving but he is still my father despite it all. I want him to accept us but can also understand if he is ill fit to know such sensitive information about this world." Setting the apple down, the queen sighed. If there is one wish Yugi could ask for, it's for Kazuto to understand what his life has become.

The life without a father, a life where a new protector has come to safeguard and care for him. To teach and guide him. To have Yugi realize what hides behind the veil of the mortal realm and the spirit world. It was a world Yugi couldn't abandon so easily. It was the last part of his life Kazuto needed to understand and Yugi prayed that it would work out that way. Atemu watched his mate before reaching out, caressing a cheek tenderly before hooking a finger under his chin. Turning his head to face him, Atemu smiled. "Your determination fuels my own. We'll make him believe and if he truly wishes to see me as the evil entity that my kind is viewed as from those understandings, then I will take care of it. But I'm sure I can make things work." Yugi chuckled and nodded. He always trusted the words of his king and if he had a plan to make someone believe in his power, then Yugi would trust in that power.

"Thanks, Atemu." Atemu moved to bring Yugi closer, brushing his lips against his queen's before pulling back. I will do whatever it takes to make your life fulfilling, Atemu whispered, running a thumb over his cheek then allowed his hand to return to his wine glass to allow Yugi to finish eating. The rest of the meal was enjoyable, the food just as succulent and delicious as Yugi remembers with the inclusion of his favorite desserts. While at the table, he had chatted with Yusei and Judai as they came over, asking how the two have been and how they were handling Aki's company as she saw the nekomata around them more than any other. "She's so kind! Aki chose wisely to come to Atemu and find a place here rather than that wretched decayed forest!" Judai said happily. Yusei nodded in agreement even when his eyes held a question he ached to ask. Atemu saw it and motioned that they would speak later, having the innate sense that what Yusei had to ask would be better in private.

Yusei bowed his head in thanks before he found himself dragged off by Judai to join in on the dancing circle. There was so little time left to enjoy the last of the daylight before sunset and he wanted to get a good spot at the maypole. Yugi chuckled as he watched them go before feeling a tap on his shoulder and glanced over then up, realizing the same oni had come over. "May I have this dance?" Oh, Yugi gasped in awe before looking to Atemu for permission. Atemu looked to the oni then back down to Yugi, giving a soft smile. "Go ahead, dove. You have my permission and my safety that he will take care of you." With that given, Yugi stood and went to join the oni on the dance floor. Atemu chuckled as he watched the two before looking to spot Aki walking over to him.

"May I?" she asked, offering her hand for a dance. "Why, I'd be delighted." Atemu answered, finishing the wine to leave on the table before moving to join her on the dance floor. As they danced, Atemu asked the question Aki had been hoping he'd asked. How are you adjusting? "I'm adjusting well, thank you. your land shows your tender care and respect. Those who look down on you for wisely exiling them are fools with dark hearts. If they had even an iota of care as you do for the land we are to care for, the decayed forests wouldn't be in such bad shape. but instead chose to be close minded with their hatred of you and live within their muck and mire. I'm glad I decided that being there wasn't a life made for me." she spoke, twirling when prompted to and continued to follow Atemu's lead as the king smiled. "And what about Yusei?" A blush crossed her cheeks at the mention of the tiger, whispering that he was a prime candidate for a mate. "But I haven't quite got to the point of getting through his shell. I can understand his hesitation of me, I was much the same when I was still living within the decayed forests, refusing to be like them. I had hoped with time of seeing that I have no intention to bring you harm or even Judai who has been exceptionally welcoming to my presence but he is still quite guarded. Perhaps I chose to aim too high?"

"Or perhaps you haven't aimed high enough." Atemu reassured, his gaze warm as he looked into the soft chocolate hues of the nekomata. Yusei is a tough one to get along with, the tiger swearing fealty for the king for the kindness he shows and the care he gives for all life upon his lands but his sadness is great. He needs a strong heart and gentle soul to balance and clear those vapid thoughts. "I care for him as I do all the forest children. When he expressed his loneliness that Judai couldn't fulfill, I knew my partner would do all he could as queen to rectify it. And when you appeared, we knew you were the one destined for your free thinking and desire to make something better for yourself. You have shelter here and soon enough, a mate who will love and care for you as much as I care for my sweetling."

Aki felt nothing but joy at the king's words, thanking him for his insight before she was passed along the dance with someone else as her place was taken by an animal spirit. With Yugi, he was impressed by the fluidity of the oni and the care in which he took to ensure Yugi wasn't pulled or squeezed within massive hands. Yugi praised the yokai, said yokai preening of the praise. "I welcome your gratitude. We yokai usually never find reason to come to these festivals but when we heard on high of the queen to grace the presence of the king's, we grew curious about you. And look at what he gets. Frankly, I can admit some find jealousy that he was lucky to gain you but there is no one worthier." The oni spoke, making Yugi smile a little as he spoke how it still amazed him how well he was received by all. "To find out about this heart of mine, of its calling to nature and all that it brings to the world, I'm glad it was Atemu who helped me unearth it. I can't wait til I'm fully immersed in this world and help this land thrive." The oni nodded, stopping to release the queen before bowing.

Thank you for the dance, the oni spoke, passing Yugi along to another spirit to continue his cycle around the dance floor. As the sun began to reach the horizon, Atemu pulled away from Lovell's mate, giving her a curt bow before moving to stand over by the maypole, grasping the silken ropes tied at the ends and commanded the attention of all. "Come all and gather for the time is nigh. Of the longest day do we give thanks to the life-giving sun. To our mother earth and the patrons of the four directions, let us join hands around the maypole. Yugi, my queen, join me in selecting our esteemed gentry to join us." At his words, Yugi moved through the crowd, joining the king and was handed the lines of cloth. Yugi looked to all in gathering around them before moving forward, passing a line of cloth to those he wanted to join. Lovell was chosen as was the karasu artisan. The eldest tanuki girl chittered with glee as did the grateful oni. A water sprite joined the mass then left was two. One for himself and one other.

Atemu watched as his beloved looked around the many faces of the court that gathered for this final send-off before spotting the face he wanted to see. "Aki, join us." The call of her name made her ears jump to alertness before squeezing through the crowd to join them. Judai cheered from wherever he was hiding, making a small flush of red grace her cheeks. To think that a time before coming to the brighter side of their hidden world, she never would've felt such embarrassment or joy for being a part of something. Before, Aki only knew the harsh reality of being emotionless and to be expected to do as her roots pertained. But here, she was welcomed, accepted, able to see the world in a way that was taken from her. Aki may be a nekomata but she was respected and not seen as a menace. That feeling welled in her heart as she took the silk from Yugi's hand, making the queen smile before they all took their place around the maypole. As the sun began the slow descent on the day, Atemu was the first to lead off, bringing with it the deep baritone of a song with it.

Clearly it was one well known to many, spirits, fae and yokai joining in to bolster the beautiful tones of the melody as the procession chosen by Yugi began to dance around the maypole. While Yugi himself didn't know the song, it was clear the rambunctious nature was one to repeat itself with its archaic chant and when Yugi was able to catch onto the words, he followed even if he fumbled a few times. The vociferous song continued as the group continued to dance around the maypole, the silk twining together in a colorful arrangement promising unity among all, brought together by the king and queen to host every being that came. The sun continued its slow descent, once a bright spotlight in the sky dimming as the curtain call of the Summer Solstice was at an end. Atemu heralds the peak of the song, nine tails aflutter which brought out orbs of kitsunebi to surround him before they began to float about the crowd, dancing above the court who found themselves entranced at the dancing fire.

Soon, the fire shot up at the apex of the song, the silks curling at the base before they were released, the kitsunebi firing off into tiny fireworks. Yugi watched them in awe before hearing the applause of the others around them. Yugi turned to all of the court, seeing their joyful faces full of delight of another season welcomed with energy. He smiled and bowed before them, sensing Atemu come to stand beside him. "Shall we send them off together, my dear?" Yugi nodded, bringing himself up to grace his presence to the crowd. Lovell and the others went to join the rest, Aki finding herself a place beside Judai and Yusei. Atemu reached, taking his beloved's hand before addressing all in attendance before them. "As the sun slumbers on this wondrous day, we as king and queen thank you for coming to join us as we bring in the summer in its full glory. A full year since we were blessed such a wonderful queen and I couldn't be any happier how well you have treated him and welcomed him. It has been such an honor to know my choice was respected by everyone here."

Yugi giggled, squeezing his hand as he bowed his head. "I only wished to be the best queen I can be for such a majestic and magnificent creature like Atemu. He had done so much for me and asked for nothing but my hand in return. I couldn't be more grateful to have such power, generosity and regality by my side. And to you all, I couldn't ask for better courtiers to be so loyal to him, helping to cultivate this world and make it your home. I aim to follow his footsteps and continue to see this world grow and become the natural shelter that keeps you safe and continue to bring you joy. So let's look forward to the future and soon welcome the autumn equinox with a grand party to match this one!" The declaration was met with cries, roars and bellows of delight, Yugi leaning against Atemu with a smile as bright as the sun. With another season under their belt, Yugi was grateful to see it all go without problems or invasions of negative forces who dare to ruin what Atemu made for himself.

As the crowd began to leave, returning to the dens and hollows after clearing the tables and taking what leftovers remained, Yugi joined his king in his warren, removing the elaborate cloths and silks and joined him for a bath down in the private lake. Atemu was purring under his mate's hands as Yugi scrubbed his hands through the fur of his tail, covered in suds. "So, it will be all over tomorrow?"

"That's the plan, sweetling. Your father can either accept your life or be forgotten from it. Come what may, he will learn the lesson your ancestors would warn you when dealing with spirits of the land and how to respect their claim." Atemu spoke, turning to his mate with eyes aglow. "I would never give you up, my dear sweetling. You are my greatest joy." Yugi flushed at the praise, pinching the tip of the tail he was working on, earning him a yelp from the king. The night ended with a jovial water fight, immediately halted by a tender kiss before they cleaned up and were off for bed. By morning's first light, they had returned to the human realm and stood before the game shop door. Yugi shifted on his feet, key already inserted into the door to allow them entry. A glance to Atemu gave him the confidence to unlock the door, swinging it open to enter and head towards the family room. No one had been awake when they entered, giving Yugi the thought that they would have to wait for a more reasonable hour until the click of a door opening caught his ear. Looking towards the hall, it didn't take long before the familiar form of Kazuto came into view, eyes scanning the two as they narrowed suspiciously at Atemu.

Atemu met his gaze with cool indifference, resting a hand on Yugi's shoulder to soothe his wary heart. "We need to talk." Was the statement to come from his mouth, making Kazuto visibly shiver as he stepped towards the two. I won't let you take my son, he began, making Atemu smirk. You have no say in such things, Atemu continued, the air humming with the potent magic, an energy that prickled the skin and made Kazuto know there was more to the man before him, much more than he once expected. So it went without saying that upon seeing the flowing tails of obsidian tipped in crimson red as the illusion was pulled like wool from his eyes...

He knew he had mistakenly taunted powers he could never hope to stand against.

Zypher: So we finally hit the climax of all this buildup. Of all the miscommunication brought about by Kazuto while in all his honesty of trying to look out for family. Alas, it goes without saying that the forces you challenge will bite back and Atemu will do so and very hard whenever his mate is concerned. apologies for the delay but of course, festival chapters tend to take a bit longer but quality comes for the wait and i do enjoy making these things as extravagant as the king who runs them~
