Chapter 9:
INT. LIBRARY – NIGHT
Gale storms into the Woodsboro Public Library. It is nearing closing time and she is the last person left. The elderly librarian stares at her.
LIBRARIAN: I'm sorry, we're going to be closing -.
Gale interrupts her by slapping a $50 bill onto her desk.
LIBRARIAN: But in this case I can make an exception. What can I do for you?
GALE: Birth records. Genealogies. Adoption records. Anything you have on Maureen Prescott.
LIBRARIAN: I'm sorry, you'd have to go to town hall and file an OPRA request.
Gale sighs and slams down another $50 bill.
LIBRARIAN: Follow me …
CUT TO:
INT. STORAGE AREA – NIGHT
The librarian leads Gale to a storage room. Bureaus full of files line the walls, creating several isles.
LIBRARIAN: It's most interesting though …
GALE: I'm sorry – what is?
LIBRARIAN: You're not the first person coming seeking records on Maureen Prescott.
GALE: Who else came?
LIBRARIAN: Well, after the initial massacre, many people. But before that -.
GALE: Roman Bridger.
LIBRARIAN: Precisely.
GALE: What about before Roman? Anyone else?
LIBRARIAN: No, not that I can remember. Ah, here we are. "P". There's a table over there – you can review at your leisure.
GALE: Thanks.
The librarian hums as Gale starts filing through the bureau.
CUT TO:
Gale slams the folder down onto a table. She cycles through the genealogies, tracing down to Maureen Prescott. She narrows her eyes – the files relating to the birthdate of Sidney Prescott are missing. In fact, everything related to Sidney is missing from this folder.
Gale cocks her head. Could Roman have taken it?
THUNK.
One of the bureau's gives off a thunk, as though hit by something.
Gale stands up.
GALE: Hello?
THUNK.
Gale grabs the files and hastily places them back into the folder and places the folder back into her purse. She then begins power-walking down the aisles of bureaus.
CUT TO:
INT. LIBRARY – NIGHT
Gale enters the main section of the library. The lights are now dimmed and there's no sign of the librarian. She power-races to the exit, not risking anything.
EXT. LIBRARY – NIGHT
Gale storms into her car. She sits inside it and places the manilla envelope on the seat next to her. She spares a glance at the library. Nothing.
Gale turns to the folder again. She grabs it and rifles through it, checking its contents again. Yup, everything related to Sidney Prescott's birth is gone. She continues searching. There are the marriage records to Neil Prescott, but nothing else. Gale tosses the paperwork onto the dashboard and sighs. She grabs her cell phone and dials Dewey. He answers.
DEWEY: Gale?
GALE: Dewey – real quick, I'm at the library –
DEWEY: What are you doing there?
GALE: Nevermind that – I took all the birth records related to Maureen Prescott. And get this – all the records of Sidney Prescott's birth were removed.
DEWEY: What?
GALE: Gone. Someone took it.
DEWEY: Roman?
GALE: I don't think so. Roman wanted people to know he was related to Maureen and Sidney. Whoever took this – there's something about Sidney's birth they don't want read.
DEWEY: Like what? She was adopted?
GALE: I don't know. I'm coming down to the station right now!
DEWEY: No can do – I gotta be at the governor's rally. It's already started and heck I'm running so late!
GALE: Okay, I'll meet you there.
DEWEY: Love you.
GALE: Love you too.
Gale hangs up and sighs. She reaches up and adjusts her review mirror – GHOSTFACE IS IN THE BACK SEAT!
Gale starts, jumping. Ghostface springs up, grabbing at her. They struggle, the car shakes.
Gale swings the door open, falling out onto the ground. Her phone skitters away under her car. Her foot twists the wrong way. It's sprained. She limps away from the car.
GALE: Help! SOMEBODY HELP!
Ghostface calmly exits the rear of the car. He stands behind Gale, cocking his head, knife in his hand.
Gale reaches the doors of the library.
GALE: Help! For the love of God open the door!
Inside, the librarian is sitting at a desk. Gale continues banging.
GALE: PLEASE! OPEN UP!
The lights are flickering are in the library. They flicker on – revealing the librarian's head lolled backwards, her neck sliced open, the two $50 bills shoved into the slice wound.
Gale screams.
Ghostface charges.
Not this fucking time. Gale turns, grabs her purse, pulls out a small gun.
BANG!
BANG! BANG!
Ghostface is struck three times. He falls backwards, his knife flying out of his hand. He hits the ground with a thud and lies there, unmoving.
Gale edges closer to him, away from the library. She trains the gun on him.
GALE: Up. Get up! I know by now that's not enough to kill you! Get up!
Ghostface just lies there.
Gale aims her gun at his head and prepares to squeeze the trigger!
KABOOM!
THE LIBRARY BEHIND HER BURSTS INTO FLAMES!
Gale spins around, watching the wreckage of the library raining down around her.
BEHIND HER, GHOSTFACE SPRINGS UP AND PLUNGES HIS KNIFE INTO HER BACK!
Gale screams – her gun goes flying! Ghostface tosses her onto the ground.
Gale struggles to crawl away, burning wreckage still raining down. Behind her, Ghostface GRIPS her ankle.
GALE: NO!
He drags her backwards and flips her onto her back. Gale stares up, blood running down out of her mouth. Ghostface kneels down, cocking his head almost sympathetically.
GALE: Do it if you have the guts!
Ghostface STRIKES DOWN WITH THE KNIFE!
THUNK!
