CHAPTER 6 – Meditation
Kagome was sitting in a comfortable position as instructed by her teacher. She closed her eyes and breathed deeply. She ignored the sounds around her, the occasional crack of the fire, the insects in the forest and the chirping of birds were subsiding as she focused on her breathing. Only the smooth voice her Sesshomaru was reaching her to guide her. She felt as if she was half asleep but very much aware. Her body felt heavy, connected to the ground. She did not fell the nice summer breeze on her skin or the warm air.
- Good, now focus on your power. Use an image in your mind if you have to. Feel your power inside of you and hold them steady.
- An image? Like what? she asked without opening her eyes, trying not to break her state of relaxation.
- It can be anything, a growing tree, a flowing river….
She breathed even deeply and searched for something decent to imagine. The first thing that came to her mind was a bowl of water. Two of them appeared before her. One was overflowing uncontrollably, the other was half empty but somehow dripping at a constant pace.
- Now control them. Sesshomaru said.
She did not know how he figured out why she had conjured two of them, but she thought it was not the time to ask him. She started with the one overflowing; she tried the slow down the water; to keep it in the bowl as much as she can. She focused hard on her self; finding the whole process exhausting. It felt to her she was at it for hours. Every time the flow would subside, she tried to catch her breath, making it overflow again.
Sesshomaru watch closely her aura. It was slowly going steady and stayed concentrated around her and not all over the place like when he found her the day before. She'd need a lot more practice before she could mask her aura completely but she was doing great for a first time. Sweat started to appear on her forehead. She was hard working he had to give her that. The humans he encountered over the years, aside from the monks and miko, were all lazy and hedonistic in his view. Always doing the strict minimum and looking for their own pleasure instead of doing the unpleasant work. She was different but he did not know why and that made him curious.
The sun had disappeared, and it was well into the night when he told her to get some rest. Kagome opened her eyes, surprised at how much time she spent in her meditation state. Yawning, she let her body roll to the ground.
- How did you know I had two? I did not even know until I conjured two of them. she asked not knowing if he'd answer her.
- I told you when I've found you yesterday. I was looking for a yokai and this Sesshomaru found it. he did not want to have to say it explicitly. She can put two and two together. She'll figure it out.
- But I was alone… she mumbled to herself. You mean I'm a yokai? she asked. But I'm a miko, is that even possible?
-Hnn. Sesshomaru shrugged, he did not know how it was possible. As far as he could remember he never hear of such thing. No miko and demon ever mated to his knowledge.
Kagome was left confused at his words. A yokai, her? She did not know how that happened, but she had a theory. She needed to go back to that castle and search for clues. She missed her friends and wanted to meet with them as soon as possible. Letting herself slowly fall asleep she thought how lucky she was that Sesshomaru found her and was so understanding towards her situation. His motive was not clear, he probably care about her personally but at least he did not made her feel bad about it. He could have been cruel, he could even had killed her, but instead he agreed to escort her to her destination. Even agreed to train her for the time being. Yes she was lucky. She whispered her "goodnight" by reflex without thinking about who she was saying that to, hoping the nightmares would not come tonight.
Kagome woke up in tears. Todays dream was reserved to Inu Yasha. Her heart was tight in her chest and she wished she could rip it out of her body to not feel this pain. Tears were running down her cheeks, warming up her skin. She used the only sleeve her miko kimono had left to wipe her face clean. She was a mess but tried to pull herself together. She did not want to anger the daikyokai she was travelling with. Surely he did not care about her love life. She slapped her face with her own two hands to push down hanyo out of her mind. She was weirdly looking forward to walking in silence today. She did not want to talk to anyone.
Sesshomaru watched the woman slap herself, confuse on why she did that. She smelled of sadness, her tears made the air around them salty. She got up and started to walk in the same direction they walked the previous day. The mountain they were headed for was standing tall at the horizon. They would reach it in a few days if they continued at the speed they were going.
Three days passed like the one before, walking silently during the day, meditating in the evening, and crying all night. Kagome was exhausted, she never had a real goodnight sleep since she woke up alone. Her body screamed of pain at each step she took but she did not complain to her travelling companion.
Reaching the castle, it was clear to them it had been deserted. The thick miasma that surrounded it a few days ago was gone and the vegetation was slowly returning. The ground had cracks where Inu Yasha used his Kaze no Kisu. The main building was in ruins and traces of burned wood was seen on many roofs.
Kagome entered the same room she searched on that day. Nothing had changed since. The herbs were still drying on the walls and the futon folded in the corner, Kana's mirror on the ground. She spotted her backpack in the left corner by the door. She was happy to see it still intact, her bow and arrow resting beside it. She looked through the monstrous thing, relieved to see all her belonging inside.
She closed the door behind her, letting Sesshomaru know she was going to change her clothes. Cursing at herself she retrieved the only garment she brought with her from her own world. A red summer dress. She blushed at the thought of wearing it. How stupid had she been when she decided to pack it. She had the plan to wear it to try to seduce Iny Yasha, wanting him to show her how much he'd desire her in that dress. Fighting the tears that threatened her eyes she changed quickly, pushing all emotions aside. She grabbed a pack of chips to give to Sesshomaru as a thank you gift and slung her bag on her shoulder.
She found the daikyokai outside, still looking at the rumbles and the scene where the fight took place. She approached him pointing the destroyed building. He watched her walking by his side, shocked by what she was wearing. Never he had seen a woman walking in so short garment other than female yokai during mating season. It was provocative to him. His inner Inu growled at his sight, liking what he was seeing.
- That's where Naraku kept me while Tsubaki, the dark miko, killed Kikyo to get me my soul back.
Her memories were vivid, and she could see the scene as if she was looking out from it. She pointed out some other locations. Miroku's, Sango's, Shippo's, Kirara's. she walked him through the battle step by step. He followed her silently, listening to what she was saying, waiting for her explanation of how she became a yokai. She told him about Inu Yasha's outburst when he saw his dead lover, tears in her eyes. She could not hold them any longer and talking about it made it so much worst. Having to relive the crushing moments she paused her story to composed herself. Sesshomaru said nothing, letting her cry for her lost love.
- Then… I saw a flash coming from there, she pointed the location where Tsubaki died, Naraku moved forward and then I felt pain and passed out. When I came to my sense I was in the forest. There you have the whole story.
Sesshomaru walked to the said location, crushing the bones of the dark miko under his feet and breathed in deeply, trying to smell if another person was behind Kagome's new powers but found nothing. Nothing that could explain her situation.
- I…. I think she did it, Kagome said, I think Tusbaki used the Shikon no Tama and made a wish on it. But I don't think I was the one it was intended for.
Sesshomaru thought about it, that would be a plausible explanation. If it could work for hanyo maybe it could work on humans too.
- Well, now you know the whole story. Thank you for coming here with me. she handed him the small package of food to Sesshomaru and managed to smile at him despite the sadness of her heart. That for you, again, thank you Sesshomaru-sama.
Sesshomaru took the strange bag from the miko, confused about what it was. Exanimating for package he read out load even more confused of what he was holding "Japan number one chips since 1956". His eyes setting on Kagome as she froze, realizing she might have a little more explaining to do.
