CHAPTER 8 - Stormy Night
Kagome woke up in the middle of the night. A storm broke out and rain started to pour down while thunder stroke far way, illuminating the sky. Kagome always liked storms, just not when she was camping in the forest. She liked the sound of the rain, the smell of wet grass, the beauty of the lighting in the sky, all of it soothed her. She got up to put another log in the fire, making sure that Rin would stay warm even under the rain. As she put a log of wood on the fire, Sesshomaru opened his eyes and stared at her surprised to see her awake at this hour of the night.
She said nothing and sat down next to Rin who was sound asleep. The sadness she felt about not being able to go search for her friends slowly transformed into anger and frustration. She obviously did not like to be told what to do; but hated to be threaten even more. He could have asked nicely. I would have answered his questions if he asked nicely. But 'nicely' was not something Sesshomaru did often and Kagome knew that.
She seriously thought about running away. Maybe she could find a village, maybe she could find some help, maybe she was not too far away from her friends, maybe…. Maybe. Out off all the foes she encountered during her years travelling feudal Japan none scared her more than a truly angry Sesshomaru. She just was not sure she wanted to take that risk, just yet. I can't leave, but I don't want to stay here either. And so, she sat in silence, listening to the storm wishing she could scream out her anger; feeling the rain fall down her cheeks as if she was crying. She was silent but the weather was speaking for her.
"You should get some rest" Sesshomaru said, interrupting Kagome's thoughts "or is it the storm that bothers you?"
Kagome only shook her head as an answer, determined to give the Great Lord of the West the silent treatment. Looking at his direction she saw that he was staring at her, his face was hard and cold, his eyes without emotions. Kagome did not like it when he stared at her that way. She could never figure out what he was thinking; for all she knew he could be plotting how to murder her in her sleep or to push her off a cliff. She wanted to tell him to stop but that would require her to talk to him and that she was too stubborn to do so. Kagome quickly shifted her gaze back to the fire unwilling to pay any more attention to the Lord.
Sesshomaru felt unsure of why the little woman acted so cold towards him. Yes, he had threatened her but surely that was not her first time dealing with a powerful Yokai, she must have been threatened many times since the beginning of her journey. And yet she stopped talking to him, only nodding to his questions and diverting her gaze whenever it wandered in his direction. He found himself wandering if his brother would get that kind of attitude often considering Inu Yasha's uncivilised manners.
His inner Inu was restless ever since he brought the miko back to his land. Call it instinct or pride but Sesshomaru really did not like that Kagome was ignoring him. A silent woman was far more dangerous that one complaining. He had to learn it the hard way many years ago.
His mind set on making her stop her childish behaviour, Sesshomaru got up, grabbed Kagome's wrist and started walking away from the camp, dragging the miko behind him. Kagome was following him trying to match his stride, complaining about his hard grip and asking where they were going, to which he gave no explanation and tightened his hold on her. When he judged they both were far enough to be heard he stopped. Without releasing her, Sesshomaru pinned her against a tree, her arm set high above her head. She had no where else to look but at him and could not escape with him so close to her.
"So you can talk, good." He said looking at her dead in the eyes. "Tell me, why you chose to ignore this Sesshomaru."
"Seriously!?" Kagome asked, "You kidnapped and threatened to kill me, and you want to know why I'm not friendly towards you!?"
"Don't be a child," he shouted, "I'm sure this is not the first time you get threatened, I heard your friend the demon slayer tried to kill you when you first met. I'd bet Inu Yasha tried to kill you too at first."
The memories of her first meeting with Inu Yasha came back to her. Yes he had tried to kill her and nearly succeeded if it was not for Kaede and her neckless. Too stubborn to admit he was right on this point she brushed this small detail aside.
"Well at least my friends don't hurt me and they don't keep me by force." She said pointing at her wrist where Sesshomaru was holding her.
Sesshomaru's eyes followed hers and realised how tight his grip was of her wrist. He let go of her arm and placed his now free hand next to her head, leaning in to make sure she would not try to escape. She looked at her hand, red marks where already showing where he was holding her. Kagome rubbed the area, making sure not to look in the eyes of the daiyokai. This proximity made her uncomfortable. Not that she thought he was going to hurt her, but something made her feel like she was doing something wrong, something dangerous.
"It never occurred to you that I might be protecting them from you." He asked her softly, almost kindly "You are a Yokai now, you have seen Inu Yasha lose control of his emotion and have his yokai blood overpower him. What if it happens to you in battle? Do you want to take the risk of hurting them?"
"Why do you care?" Kagome asked softly, unsure of why she asked this question in the first place. It wasn't like Sesshomaru to care about anyone else than himself, except for Rin of course. She raised her head slightly, locking their eyes together. A few second passed, but to Kagome it felt like minutes. She never took time to really look at the Lord's face, and now that she was only a few inches from him she had the opportunity to do just so. His eyes were much more expressive than she remembered them to be. Up close she could see the hint of surprise he felt towards her question. Could it be that he was surprised that he cared about her and the fate of her friends as well? A lightning strike broke out in the sky and reminded the both of them of where they were.
"I don't care about them," He quickly said, straightening and walking backward slowly, "I don't want you to wreak havoc in my lands."
"So what, you will never let me go back to my friends?" Kagome asked, hoping he'd show some understanding.
"Right now, it is out of the question." Sesshomaru answered her, knowing she would not like the answer. He did not the answer either, he knew that his refusal for her leaving was not a question of security, he could kill her if she posed a threat to his land. Only he did not want to have to kill her. That would be a shame. He thought looking up and down at the woman in front of him.
"I'll train you, so you don't lose control. Only when I am please with your progress that I will consider letting you go." He said while walking back in the direction of the camp. "This is not up to discussion"
Following him to the camp, Kagome got lost in her thought. I guess I can live with those conditions. She thought. It would mean living with Sesshomaru for a while; she knew he could be hard to get along with but if Rin could do it why not her? They arrived at the camp, happy to see that no one remarqued their absence and kept sleeping deeply. Still not tired and having a lot to think about, Kagome sat down against the tree she was sleeping under a few hours ago, eyeing from time to time the daiyokai sitting not too far away. The rain was still pouring but the thunder was subsiding, leaving them both in the silence of the forest. They both sat in silence for the rest of the night, waiting for the sun to rise and for the storm to pass.
