Bucky hadn't mentioned the files to Alex again before leaving his session and she didn't push the issue. She never intended for Bucky to learn she had requested additional background information on him the way it had come out. Between that and hearing S.H.I.E.L.D. files had been compromised, even if they were fake, she would understand if he was upset. None of it was going to make her job easier and she had been cursing the powers that be since it happened.
"Mommy! It's for you," a child's voice yelled loudly.
Alex shut off the vacuum and turned off the radio. Between the vacuum and music playing, she hadn't heard the doorbell. Wondering who it was, she automatically reached around to her back pocket for her phone and found it wasn't there.
"Olivia, what did I tell you about strangers and answering the door?" Alex called as she rushed to the door. She found Bucky standing just outside the entrance looking down somewhat puzzled at the five-year-old in front of him. Alex was surprised to see Bucky; she had assumed his silence meant she wouldn't hear from him until their next session. Now that he was suddenly in front of her, a subtle wave of nervousness fluttered through her body.
"He wanted to know if Alex was home. That's you," Olivia replied matter-of-factly.
"Do you know this person?" When Olivia shook her head, Alex reminded her that he was a stranger even if he knew her mom's name.
After gently cautioning Olivia, Alex greeted Bucky with a casual 'hey' and invited him inside. His eyes darted back and forth from the little girl to Alex. Of all the situations he had envisioned on his way over, a child opening the door wasn't one of them. Despite the determined look on her face, Olivia stood next to her mother warily looking from Bucky to Alex to see what would happen next. Alex was amused to see the two sizing each other up and moved on to introductions.
"This is my daughter, Olivia. Liv, this is Jam…"
"I'm Bucky. Hi!" he said cutting Alex off and crouched down. The child returned his smile and said hello but didn't shake the hand he offered. She continued to watch him closely as he stood back up.
"It'd be nice if you called me Bucky, too," he told Alex with a bit of brashness. "I sent you a couple of texts. You didn't answer. With everything going on, I wanted to stop by."
He looked around uncertainly before adding, "I hope I didn't bother you."
Although she didn't say anything, Alex was touched by his concern. Pre-empting any conversation, Olivia reached out and tapped on Bucky's vibranium arm. She asked if it was real. Bucky assured her it was real, then flexed his hand and pulled down his sleeve. Alex explained that he had an accident and they give him a metal arm so he could do lots of things like lift an elephant or open really tight jar lids.
"Cool," Olivia said with enthusiasm.
In the ensuing silence, Alex was able to respond to Bucky. "You're not bothering us. I told you I'd be around. Which reminds me... Liv, where's my phone?"
Olivia ran off to get the phone which she had kept after face-timing with her grandparents. Alex led Bucky into a small living room where she had a work station. A small desk was set up in the corner with a laptop placed in the center. A picture that Olivia had drawn was framed and sitting in one corner. Alex logged on and told him he could use the chair that was there.
Bucky looked around as Alex went to get another chair. It was your average living room. There was an overstuffed couch, television on the wall, and Alex's tote bag sat on the floor near the desk. A couple of toys had been left out and numerous photos of Alex and Olivia were displayed on the coffee table and walls. Olivia came in to return the cellphone and after finding out work was going to be involved, announced she was going to her room.
"You never mentioned you had a daughter," he said doing his best to sound nonchalant.
"You never asked," Alex said and sat down next to him. She turned on the audio baby monitor that was sitting nearby. The unit blinked immediately picking up Olivia's talking and singing.
"I don't think I can lift an elephant," he said while handing Alex the USB drive she pointed to. Alex looked at him and stifled a laugh.
"She's five. I can't tell her you hit people with it."
"Was she… blipped?" Bucky asked hesitantly.
"No. I don't think I could've handled that. She was five weeks old when everyone disappeared." Alex told him that when the blip occurred, she had been called back in to the office to counsel co-workers who experienced their kids, family members, and friends suddenly being gone. She related that it was the hardest thing she's had to do and that it still affected her. Alex then asked if they could talk about it some other time. Seeing that her usually placid expression had become troubled, Bucky quickly agreed.
Alex opened a notebook and clicked on a file number that corresponded to one written on the page. A video showed Bucky being chased by Black Panther through a tunnel in Bucharest.
"Where did you get this?"
"We're all on camera a lot more than we think. S.H.I.E.L.D. and the government has access to pretty much all of it. Looks like you can run faster than a car going highway speed. But here at the airport, the spider kid caught you easily."
Bucky looked at her sullenly. Alex cocked her head to one side and stared back. "He's got that web stuff," he replied.
"Oooo-kay. And this? It's not clear but that's at least four stories down; no parachute, no pillow. No shield to break your fall."
"And?"
"And you didn't break a bone."
"That you know of," he countered.
"I remember this. It happened not long before I started this job. They couldn't find you minutes later. You weren't hurt," Alex stated and played another file. She noted that none of his responses were outright denials that he suppressed his abilities.
Curiosity got the better of Olivia and she had been peeking into the room. Bucky had noticed her creeping closer out of the corner of his eye. He placed his hand over Alex's on the mouse and clicked to stop the video. He let his hand linger, only removing it when Olivia squeezed in between them. Bucky tried to ascertain if Alex had noticed but her attention was now on the child.
"Are you watching a movie?" Olivia asked peering at the screen.
"Working," Alex replied. The fluttering she felt earlier had returned with his touch and she didn't dare remove her own hand from the mouse for fear it would shake.
"I like the picture you drew," Bucky told Olivia. He grabbed the frame as Alex minimized the video.
"That's me. That's mommy," the girl replied, pointing to a stick figure with bright pink feet.
"I could tell by the sneakers," he told her as Olivia laughed.
"Can we get pizza?" the child asked looking up at Alex.
"No, we got pizza on Thursday."
"Pleeeease," Olivia pleaded. After being told no a second time, she grumbled and stormed back to her room.
"Speaking of dinner, you want to stay? If you don't have plans," Alex said to Bucky.
He remained stoic. Although he was happy to be asked, he didn't want to seem too eager. After appearing to give it some deliberation, Bucky accepted. Whatever was cooking smelled good and was bound to be better than what he was going to find at home.
Olivia walked into the kitchen holding a somewhat worn teddy bear by one arm. Alex was getting Bucky something to drink and finishing up preparations as he sat at the table. Before climbing into her chair, the child gave the bear to Bucky. When Alex turned around, she saw Bucky looking slightly uncomfortable holding the stuffed animal.
"Liv, maybe Max could stay in your room today," Alex suggested.
"Aww, Mom."
Alex looked at Bucky and smiled before gesturing for him to give her the bear. He shook his head and kept Max tucked under his vibranium arm much to Olivia's delight. The girl's happiness was short lived. It came to an end when Alex put a plate in front of her with lasagna and some cut up green beans.
"I don't like green beans," Olivia protested.
"Olivia, there's like three of them cut up. You have to try some."
Amid some whining and apologies, Alex passed the serving dishes to Bucky. When Alex got up to refill his glass, Bucky reached over and speared a few of Olivia's green beans with his fork. He motioned for the child to stay quiet and the little girl nodded with a huge grin. The rest of the meal passed pleasantly with Olivia recounting the week at school.
"What do you want me to say about what you showed me?" Bucky asked as he prepared to leave.
"Today is not therapy. We will talk it out next time... but I'd like the truth. Olivia come say goodbye."
The girl ran to the door with paper in hand. "I made it for you," she said breathlessly and handed Bucky a drawing. "That's me. That's you and Max. Bye."
Olivia then ran back the way she came. Alex and Bucky looked at the paper. The figure that was Bucky was dangling Max by a paw as a stick Olivia stood nearby.
"Looks like you got a new friend. She really captured your hair. If you ever pull that green bean trick with her again Bucky Barnes, it will not go well for you," Alex said with a knowing look.
"I'll remember that," replied and brushed his hand through his hair self-consciously. He wasn't sure if the smile on his face was because she had finally called him Bucky or because he might be invited for dinner again.
Upon arriving at home, Bucky took the drawing out of his pocket. He carefully unfolded it and taped it to the refrigerator. Before going to watch television, he pulled out his phone and took a picture.
