"Why would I lie to you?" Zemo asked. His face was devoid of emotion.
Sam and Bucky turned simultaneously to glare at Zemo. "Because you're a bad guy. Because you like pushing his buttons," Sam said with a nod towards Bucky.
Zemo held up his hands gesturing for Sam to stop. "I'm not that bad."
Sam pulled Bucky a few steps away from where Zemo was sitting. "He's yankin' your chain."
"Why?"
"Because you and him have this weird thing."
"We don't have a weird thing," Bucky stressed.
"It's not weird," Zemo contributed from his seat nearby.
"Shut up!" Sam and Bucky said simultaneously without turning to look at him.
"You know I would not lie to you about this, James," Zemo said calmly. Bucky stared at him with narrowed eyes trying to discern the veracity of the other man's words.
"I'm calling Fury," Bucky declared after a moment.
"Let me," Sam said. "You're not always the most tactful."
"He's right," Zemo agreed.
Bucky had been scowling at Sam but quickly turned to Zemo with the same annoyed look. "She's my therapist. I'm calling," he told them.
Bucky strode out of the room with his phone to his ear. Zemo watched him walk away and then gave Sam a knowing look and a smile.
Bucky wasn't the only one who had a sleepless night. After assuring Olivia that everything was okay, she convinced the child to lie down in the large chair. When Olivia fell asleep, Alex paced in the dimly lit converted office. She tried the doorknob a few times, hoping that it would suddenly be unlocked. Knowing her efforts were futile, Alex sunk down in front of the chair Olivia was sleeping on and hugged a pillow.
The next morning, Alex was jolted awake by a key in the door. During the moments she did sleep, her fragmented dreams consisted of scenes of Bucky being experimented on by Ryan. Although she didn't want Bucky to be in any danger, she hoped it was him on the other side of the door.
Alex scrambled to her feet as best she could after having spent an uncomfortable night on the floor. When the door opened wider, it wasn't Bucky. She found herself looking into the eyes of her former husband. Ryan was holding a tray with some donuts, danish, a small glass of orange juice and a cup of coffee.
As he placed the tray on a side table without looking at her, Alex angrily whispered. "You keep us locked in here all night and now you bring breakfast?"
"The locked door wasn't my idea."
"I don't care. I do care that you seem to be okay with kidnapping."
"If I had called and asked you to come with me, would you?" Ryan asked.
"Probably not," Alex admitted. "That doesn't make it okay."
"They had questions and I wanted to see Olivia. Kill two birds with one stone," he said in a half-hearted attempt at an explanation.
"We didn't move," she responded through clenched teeth. "If you were in town and really wanted to see her, you could've stopped by."
"You know, Alex, things haven't exactly been easy. While you've been going about your daily life, I've been trying to put mine back together."
"If you think the five years you were gone were easy, think again. I was left with no husband, no family, a whole lot of friends gone, a five-week-old child, plus a mortgage and other bills I couldn't afford on my own."
"You seem to have come through it just fine," Ryan told her with a hint of bitterness.
"I'm sorry I didn't record the months of crying, sleepless nights, and hours of therapy," Alex shot back sarcastically. "And, I'm not going to argue and try to convince you that I cared."
Alex glanced over at Olivia who was now awake and watching them with wide eyes. The child called out for her from the chair.
"She wants to go home," Alex said looking directly at Ryan after hurrying over and calming Olivia.
"Not right now. I know they have some things they want to ask you, Alex," he said.
"I can't – and won't – say anything about the people I work with. You know that," she said coldly.
"They want to know about the serum."
"Ryan, I told you I don't know anything. I can't tell anyone how it works, why it works, or how to make it. Why not analyze John Walker?"
"He isn't stable," he replied. "They want to know where Fury has the rest of the original samples stashed."
"What original samples?" Alex asked with surprise. She stroked Olivia's hair in the hopes of calming them both.
Ryan looked at her and explained they were looking for samples from Steve Rogers. Alex reminded him that she was a therapist and wasn't read in on such things, if they happened to exist. Sciple nodded and said that he hoped that his colleagues also believed her.
"If you know that I can't help you, why don't you convince them of that too?" Alex said and watched Ryan shake his head. He then went on to explain that he had the potential to change the world with this serum and if she couldn't help maybe Fury would.
"Why don't both of you have something to eat before they get here?" he suggested.
Alex set her jaw and slightly shook her head. "You should worry about protecting Olivia and not your job."
Bucky walked back into the room. Although he was no longer on the phone, his face still displayed a troubled expression. Sam carefully eyed his partner and remained silent, not wanting to upset him more. Zemo, on the other hand, was more than happy to inquire about the contents of the phone call.
"What did Nicholas Fury have to say?" Zemo asked.
The question caused Bucky to exhale loudly and he shot Zemo an exasperated look. Sam shushed Zemo and then asked about Fury's reply.
"He hasn't heard from Alex," Bucky stated.
"What did I tell you?" Zemo said with a pointed look at Sam.
"But," Bucky continued. "They don't speak every day. He thinks we're overreacting."
"We're? That would be you," Sam said. "I told you she's probably took a day off."
"She didn't take a day off. Even if she did, she'd answer or at least have some sort of message recorded," Bucky replied.
"They have her," Zemo said. "I can show you where."
"No. No you can't," Sam declared.
"Why not?" Zemo asked.
"Ummm, yeah. Why not?" Bucky said echoing Zemo.
"Because you're a bad guy," Sam said pointing at Zemo. "And, you would love to lead him… and me… right into a trap."
"Let's go!" Bucky said to Zemo and pointed to the door.
"Fury said you're overreacting," Sam interjected and Bucky donned his jacket. Sam pushed Zemo back into the chair he had just stood up from.
"Well, he's not here and I know something's wrong," Bucky retorted.
"You can't just barge in there alone," Sam said.
"I'm not alone. I'm taking him," Bucky pointed out.
"You do realize your bickering is wasting time," Zemo interrupted loudly as he stood back up.
Sam and Bucky looked at each other and then at Zemo. "I'm coming too," Sam said and followed the other two men to the door.
