A few hours after bringing breakfast to Alex and Olivia, Ryan Sciple again opened the door to where they were being held. He stood just inside the room and watched as Alex held Olivia close in the large chair and spoke to her quietly. Alex had glanced up briefly at the sound of the door opening but returned to telling Olivia a story after noting the solemn look on her ex-husband's face.

Ryan hesitated for a moment as his thoughts went back to when Olivia was just born. His expression softened as he remembered that time. Just as quickly his countenance turned stern again as his mind filled with the memory of the Snap. Ryan cleared his throat causing Alex and Olivia to look at him. He walked over to the chair and leaned down. He asked Olivia if she wanted to go for a walk with him. Almost immediately, the child declined and she clenched her mother's shirt. Her refusal was echoed by Alex.

After extracting herself from the child's grasp, Alex put a nearby book into Olivia's hands and told her to read for a bit. She then got up and pulled Ryan aside. "She stays with me."

"They need to talk to you," Ryan replied.

"They can do it here. I'm not leaving her."

"I'm not going to hurt her. She's my daughter," he assured Alex.

"You're not acting like it. I get that you're angry with me but to bring Olivia into whatever this is," Alex said shaking her head.

"Alex, this has nothing to do with you and me. It's about who you work for and who you work with."

"So much for everyone being on the same team," Alex muttered not quite totally under her breath. "I still can't tell you anything about the serum, other than you're trying to give people super powers they don't need."

"Those powers that you think they don't need will help win wars," Sciple said.

"Ryan," Alex hissed under her breath. "A man died after you injected him with the serum. It doesn't work."

"We both know it can work. Remember Steve Rogers? Hell, I bet you even met him."

"Steve Rogers is gone. Even if he was here, he wouldn't help you."

"We don't need him. And if Fury doesn't cooperate, we'll get the next best thing… Bucky Barnes."

Alex tensed at the mention of Bucky's name. "Bucky won't help you."

"Why? Because you counseled him and he's a changed man?" Ryan scoffed. "He's an assassin who worked for Hydra, right? I'm pretty sure the highest bidder will win. What can Fury… and you… offer him?"

"He was a prisoner of war," she stated coolly. Before she could say more, Sciple jumped back into the conversation.

"Then I'm sure he will see it our way."

Alex bit back the sharp retort that was on the tip of her tongue and just shook her head in frustration. She looked over at Olivia. "Why can't she stay with me?"

"She'd be a distraction."

"It won't be a long conversation; I can't answer whatever it is they want to know," Alex tried to impress upon him.

"Alex, I know you're close with Fury. He had to mention something over the years about the serum and what made theirs so special. Or, he had to let you know why Barnes seems not to have any adverse reactions."

"Nick tells me nothing about what he works on with S.H.I.E.L.D. and I don't ask," Alex replied deliberately avoiding bringing Bucky back into the conversation.

"I never did understand your loyalty to Fury. It's not like he's some upstanding guy," Ryan said.

"I don't always agree with him but at the end of the day he has my back."

"Are you sure about that?" Sciple asked before looking at his watch. A few seconds later, there was a knock on the door. Ryan walked over to door and opened it. John Walker took a step inside.

"C'mon Olivia. We're gonna go for a walk and maybe watch some tv," Ryan said from near the door.

Olivia started fussing and protesting. She hung onto her mother who had run over to her, crying that she didn't want to go. Alex did her best to hide her own distress at the situation and tried to calm the girl. She gathered Olivia in her arms, and whispered to her while stroking the girl's hair as the men looked on.

"I have to go to work for a little bit. It will be okay," Alex told her.

"Are you gonna see Bucky?" Olivia asked in between sniffles.

"Maybe," Alex replied with a glance over at Ryan. She then focused back on Olivia and gave her a tight hug and kissed her head.

"Love you, baby," Alex said and walked Olivia over to Ryan. "Be good for your father."

Alex bit her lip as she watched Olivia leave with Ryan. When the door shut, she turned to John Walker.

"Now what?" Alex asked.

"Fury's on his way," Sam said before they got into the car.

"Fury's on his way, but I'm overreacting," Bucky replied with an edge of sarcasm and raised eyebrows. He had just opened the passenger side door and was about to get in but Sam's announcement caused him to come to a complete stop. Zemo looked back and forth between the pair with an amused look on his face somewhat hoping that a full-blown argument would ensue.

No argument came and after a quick discussion, peppered with occasional remarks from Zemo, it was decided that Bucky and Zemo would go into building and begin looking for Alex and Olivia. Sam would wait for Fury outside while keeping watch for Walker or Sciple.

"Remember when I met you at the Sokovian monument?" Bucky asked Zemo after they entered the building a short time later and Sam was out of earshot.

After a slight pause, Zemo replied, "Yes, you pointed a gun at me. You wanted me to think that you would kill me."

Bucky stopped walking and turned to look at Zemo coldly. "If this is a trap… or if Alex or Olivia get hurt, I will kill you."

"James…"

"I'm serious."

"You don't have a gun," Zemo pointed out with a half-hearted smile.

"I don't need a gun," Bucky replied and pulled a knife out of his jacket pocket. He fixed Zemo with a hardened glare as he spun the weapon in his hand, then tossed it into the air and caught it. As the blade glittered in the light, Zemo nodded and swallowed.

"This way," Zemo said and started walking down the hallway. Behind him, Bucky wore a smug grin and tucked the knife back inside his pocket.

Zemo paused in front of a doorway to a stairwell and announced that they could be anywhere in the building by now. Bucky's eyes narrowed as he looked at the other man grimly.

"We'll start at the top and work our way down," Bucky said, glad that it was only a four-story building.

After searching the top two floors of the building and finding nothing but deserted rooms, Bucky's patience was beginning to wear thin. As they went towards the first closed door on the second floor, he grabbed Zemo's arm which caused the man to jump.

"Tell me again why I should believe you?" Bucky asked.

"Because they were here. I saw them. Alexandra and the child were with Dr. Sciple," Zemo said matter-of-factly and watched Bucky's jaw clench.

"What does he want with them?" Bucky asked as he opened the door and looked around.

"Not what you and I might think. He has little interest in being a family again. It's all about the serum."

"Alex is a therapist. She doesn't have information about the serum," Bucky replied. After a short pause to consider the situation he asked, "Did this happen because she's working with me?"

Zemo chuckled and shook his head. "You may be guilty of many things but not this. They believe that Nick Fury may have shared the key to the serum with her. After you almost killed him it seems she spoke with him often."

Bucky glared at Zemo at the mention of his attempted assassination of Fury. "Key to the serum? What the hell is going on?"

"There are rumors that there are vials of Steve Roger's blood having been stored all these years and that Fury knows where they are."

"Alex doesn't."

"Do you think she would tell you if she did?" Zemo asked as he looked intently at Bucky.

"Yes," Bucky said without hesitation.

"Assuming she didn't tell you, would she tell someone else? Someone like her ex-husband?"

"She's a therapist, not some secret agent," Bucky replied.

"I'm not sure whether that is good or bad for her."

Hearing Zemo's declaration, Bucky quickly pushed through the closed door in front of them and hurriedly searched the rest of the floor.

They went through all the rooms on the second and first floors and found no one. Computers were running but the areas were empty. When the pair arrived back outside they found Sam, Maria Hill and Fury waiting. Bucky explained that they had gone through the building and it was empty. Hearing that caused a look of concern to appear on Hill's face. Bucky went on to tell them about the one room that was furnished rather comfortably and looked like people had been there recently. Fury looked at Zemo coldly and asked if they had missed anything in their search. Zemo off-handedly mentioned the basement. That was enough information for Bucky who moved to go back inside.

"I'm going with you," Sam said put a hand on his shoulder to hold him back for a second.

When Zemo protested that he should be going, Fury interrupted. The former head of S.H.I.E.L.D. assumed command of the situation. He told Hill to remain outside the building and keep an eye on things. If she saw anything that looked off, she was to alert him before taking action. Hill nodded and walked away. Fury then announced that while Sam and Bucky searched the basement, Zemo would be accompanying him on a short trip.
