"Hold up," Sam said and put a hand on Bucky's shoulder once they were inside. He could see that Bucky was impatient and ready to rush to the basement stairs without any sort of plan in place.
"Why?" Bucky asked and shook off Sam's grasp.
"Because Zemo is still a bad dude and we don't know for sure that this isn't a trap. I get that you're worried about Alex but you went through this entire place with him and nothing. Now all of a sudden, there's a basement."
"You don't think there's a basement?" Bucky said dryly.
"I think that Zemo knows your buttons and he's pushing every one of them right now," Sam said.
Bucky gestured to Sam to follow and led the way to a closed door. He opened it and went inside. It was the room where Alex and Olivia had been earlier. "They were here," Bucky stated and picked up a book that had been casually left on a chair. He handed Sam the book and pushed by him to look around the room a second time.
"A book tells you they were here?" Sam questioned.
"You think all the scientists and guys like Walker are reading that?"
Sam actually looked down and flipped through the book. With its simple large pictures of animals and bright colors, it was definitely a child's book. "Okay. What's our plan?"
Before Bucky could answer there was a noise from somewhere down the hallway. Sam tossed the book aside and they both rushed to door. Bucky peered up and down the dim hallway in the hopes of finding the source of the sound. Sam took a few steps towards the far end of the building trying to see a light under a door or someone hiding in a corner but there was nothing.
"You check that way and then upstairs. I'll go this way and then down to the basement," Bucky growled.
"Bucky…"
"We can go faster if we split up."
"Bucky! What happens if it is a trap?"
"I'll call you," Bucky said and set off down the hall. Sam watched as he disappeared around a corner, then turned and jogged down the corridor in the opposite direction.
"Are you arresting me?" Zemo asked as Nick Fury pointed him in the direction of a large black SUV.
"Technically you've been captured; I prefer not to involve the local police or the government," Fury answered after they both sat down inside the vehicle. Zemo raised his eyebrows as Fury started the engine.
"Barnes seems to trust you on this. I don't," Fury continued as he pulled away from the building.
"If you don't trust me, why are you leaving your men there?" Zemo asked.
"They've been in worse situations and come through okay."
The pair rode along for a few minutes, neither saying a word. As the car turned a corner, Fury's voice broke the silence. "Government personnel files were compromised from the location you were working at under an assumed identity. Would you like to explain that?"
Zemo looked over and slightly smiled. "If government files were compromised, why don't you want to involve the government?"
Fury took his eyes off the road for a second to glare angrily at Zemo. It had no effect; he admitted to nothing. Zemo then suggested that Sciple who had been working at the lab much longer and had a connection to Alex was probably behind it. Fury guffawed aloud and told Zemo that he knew Ryan Sciple quite well.
"He's smart enough, but he only thinks of himself," Fury said and stared directly at Zemo as they waited at a traffic light. "I'm sure that Alex and S.H.I.E.L.D. files never enter his mind, but yours on the other hand…"
Zemo smiled sheepishly but remained silent.
"I know what you saw in those files. So, I don't really need you and if an accident should occur, there's no one here but me to confirm or deny events," Fury informed Zemo. After a deliberate pause, he continued, "Why don't you tell me what you shared with your lab mates?"
Zemo took the not-so-subtle hint and after clearing his throat started talking. His story began with working with Sciple at the lab and ended with contacting Bucky. Fury knew there was a lot that was being omitted but he was more concerned about locating Alex. When Fury directly asked if Alex and Olivia had ever been inside the building at all, Zemo looked offended.
"I would not lie about the child being there," Zemo stated emphatically.
"Then where are they?" Fury pressed as they sped along the highway.
"I don't know where they went. I left to tell James," Zemo replied.
"I need a better answer."
Well before Bucky and Sam arrived at the building, Alex and John Walker were already nearing their destination. When they had left Sciple, Walker had quickly escorted Alex to a waiting car. From there it was a short drive to a waiting helicopter.
When she saw the aircraft, Alex caught her breath. She was already uncomfortable being with Walker and having to get in a helicopter pushed her anxiety even higher.
"You'll love working with Fury, she said. You'll meet great people, she said. You'll probably be bored after a while, she said," Alex muttered to herself quietly. "You forgot to mention super soldiers breaking in your house and the helicopters, Maria."
Walker made Alex get into the aircraft first and climbed in after her. He sat down and spoke a few words to the pilot, then began tapping his fingers on his knee which did nothing to ease Alex's anxiety. She watched silently for a while but as the helicopter took flight, asked him to stop. Walker looked at her coldly but did as she requested.
"You don't like flying?" he asked once they a few minutes into their flight.
"Planes, yes. This… no," Alex replied. "Maybe if it was bigger. You don't mind it, I guess?"
"I've flown through war zones, this is nothing. Is it true Bucky fell hundreds of feet from a train and lived?"
The abrupt change of subject put Alex further on edge. "Since he's still with us, I guess so. Why?"
"Do you think the serum works like that for everyone?"
"I have no idea," Alex said. She went on to state that whether it did or not, it was something the world didn't need.
"But…," Walker began. "Our soldiers would be almost unbeatable in a war."
"Why don't we try not to get into wars in the first place?" Alex replied. "Besides, I'm pretty sure a well-aimed bullet will still kill you… or them." Walker gave her a sullen expression; she just shrugged and tried not to look out the window.
Soon after, they landed. Alex exited the helicopter and looked around. It was a deserted area with piles of rubble everywhere.
"Where are we?" Alex asked Walker.
"Camp Lehigh… New Jersey," Walker said and told her to watch her step as he led her through piles of rocks.
"It looks like a bomb's gone off," she muttered as she stumbled over a boulder.
"It did. Hydra. Steve Rogers. Shouldn't you know all this, you work with Fury?"
Alex shook her head and changed the subject, "How long before I can go back to Olivia? She needs me."
"She's with her father."
"The father who left to find a job and never called her since? Is that the person I'm supposed to be okay with watching my child?"
"I'm… sorry," Walker said, shocked at her outburst.
They walked along in silence with Alex doing her best not to fall. Walker led her around the corner of the remnants of a building and then down some steps. A large door was at the bottom of the steps and he pushed it open. He then motioned for her to go inside.
"Don't be sorry," Alex said before she entered a dimly lit corridor. "I need to get back to her."
"Answer their questions and you'll be able to leave," Walker replied as they walked down a hall. As they proceeded further away from the entry, the lights grew brighter and more doors could be seen. Alex looked around, wondering if she had been told the truth about where she was.
"I don't know who they are," Alex stated as they came to halt in front of another closed door. Walker knocked and announced himself. A voice inside told him to enter.
