Chapter Ten: Dino Rescue: Pups Save Benny

In the Dino Wilds, it was Taylor Turbot's birthday, and her mother, Dr. Tammy Turbot was preparing for her birthday party.

"It won't be long now, darling." Tammy declared. "You're going to have the best birthday ever."

"I know I will, mom." Taylor smiled. "Especially once Ryder and the pups get here!"

Benny the Brachiosaurus was watching the colorful decorations being put up with wide-eyed interest.

"Psst, Benny!" Rex whispered to the baby Brachiosaurus. "Over here!"

Tilting his head quizzically, Benny stomped over to Rex.

"I need to get Taylor a really amazing birthday present." Rex declared. "She's my best friend, after all."

"Rrruh?" Benny grunted plaintively.

"You're both my best friends." Rex assured the baby dino. "But today is Taylor's birthday, and she deserves the best present ever. And I know where to get it..."

On that note, Rex made his way southwards. Benny followed him, driven by curiosity.

Meanwhile, by the Lookout, the pups were also preparing for Taylor's party.

"I love birthday parties!" Rubble smiled.

"And I love wrapping presents." Rocky added, putting the claw arm of his Pup-pack to good use in wrapping his present for Taylor.

"Me too!" Marshall agreed, grabbing a ribbon in his mouth to wrap his own gift.

"Better hustle, pups." Ryder instructed. "Taylor's party's going to be starting in an hour."

"We're almost done, Ryder." Chase nodded.

"Uh, pups?" Marshall spoke up.

The pups and Ryder glanced over, and saw that Marshall had gotten himself tangled up in the ribbon.

"A little help?" He asked.

"I gotcha, dude." Zuma stepped forward.

Grabbing a piece of the ribbon in his mouth, the Chocolate Labrador pulled hard. The ribbon unwound with such force that Marshall was sent flipping into the air.

"Whoaaa!" He yelped, before landing flat on his front.

"I thought I was the flipping pup around here!" Skye joked.

Ryder and the pups all laughed.

Meanwhile, Rex and Benny had travelled to the foot of a mountain.

"This is it, Benny." Rex smiled. "This is where I'll find the greatest gift ever."

Benny looked around, seeing nothing particularly amazing around them.

"Rruh?" He tilted his head again.

"I know it doesn't seem like much." Rex admitted. "But looks can be deceiving..."

Rex began digging around the area, seeking a certain something. On the third try, he finally succeeded.

"Found one!" He smiled. "Take a look, Benny!"

Benny lowered his long neck, and took a closer look at Rex's discovery. It was a semi-circular stone, with gleaming crystals inside.

"It's a geode!" Rex declared. "I found one by here a few weeks back. It got snatched up by a pterodactyl, but I figured there had to be more around... And I was right!"

"Rrrooo!" Benny gazed appreciatively at the sparkling crystals.

"I know, right?" Rex grinned. "It's beautiful. And Taylor's gonna love it. Ruff! Claw!"

The claw contained within Rex's Pup-pack emerged, picking up the geode.

"Let's get back fast, so I can wrap this up." Rex urged. "Taylor is going to be so surprised..."

Suddenly, a loud rumbling sound filled the air, accompanied by the ground shaking.

"Whoa!" Rex yelped, just barely keeping his balance. "What's going on?"

"Rrrruhh!" Benny quivered.

"You said it, Benny." Rex nodded. "We'd better get moving..."

As they made to leave, another tremor hit. The shaking proved enough to dislodge the geode from Rex's claw. Landing on its side, the would-be gift began rolling away.

"Oh no!" Rex gasped.

Benny gave chase after the geode, grabbing it in his mouth.

"Way to go, Benny!" Rex suddenly.

Another tremor hit, crashing the ground beneath Benny to tear open.

"Gruuuh!" Benny yelped, as he dropped into the gap below.

"Benny!" Rex gasped.

The same tremor that opened the crevice sent some nearby trees falling and tumbling until they covered the hole.

"Are you okay, little buddy?" Rex called, peeking through the lattice of fallen trees.

"Rrr-rrr!" Benny nodded, still holding the geode in his mouth.

"Good." Rex smiled, relived. "And at least the shaking stopped-"

Another rumble filled the air.

"What is that?" As Rex looked around, he saw a distressing sight: a trail of smoke rising up from the nearby mountain's peak. "That's no mountain, it's a volcano... And it looks like it could erupt at any minute!"

"Rrrooo..." Benny moaned plaintively.

"Hang in there, Benny." Rex told him. "I'll get help!"

Rex rushed back to Tammy's home as quickly as his paws and wheels could carry him.

"Dr. Turbot!" He called.

"What's wrong, Rex?" Taylor asked.

"It's Benny!" Rex said breathlessly. "He's trapped in a big hole, and a volcano's about to erupt!"

"Oh, dear!" Tammy gasped. "We'd better call Ryder!"

Back in Adventure Bay, Ryder was making his way to the Dino Patroller, carrying a gift for Taylor under his arm, when his wrist Pup-Pad beeped. He carefully placed the gift down, then answered.

"Ryder here!" He declared.

"Ryder, we have a big problem!" Tammy told him.

"Benny is stuck in a hole, under a pile of fallen trees!" Rex entered the frame. "With a volcano ready to blow!"

"Sounds like major trouble." Ryder said grimly.

"Please hurry!" Rex urged.

"We'll be right there." Ryder declared. "PAW Patrol, to the Dino Patroller!"

"Ryder needs us!" The pups chorused.

As the pups rushed to the Dino Patroller, Marshall got his paw caught up in another length of ribbon.

"Not again!" He yelped, tripping up.

"Look out, Marshall!" Chase called, just before Marshall crashed into the other pups.

Somehow, the five other pups had gotten wrapped up in the mass of ribbon, a bow sitting on top of the pile.

"Aww, you pups shouldn't have!" Marshall joked.

The pups laughed as the boarded ramp folded up.

Immediately after, the Dino Patroller left the Lookout. It made its way through the hidden path to the Dino Wilds, finally stopping outside the Dino Tower, where Rex was waiting.

"There's no time to lose, pups!" He urged, as they entered the lift.

The lift carried them upwards, and the tower raised up to its maximum height. Seconds later, the pups stood before Ryder.

"PAW Patrol ready for action, Ryder sir!" Chase announced.

"Pups, we have a big emergency." Ryder announced. "Benny has gotten trapped in a crevice, under a pile of fallen trees. And to make matters worse, a nearby volcano is on the verge of erupting."

"Oh, no!" Skye gasped.

"Poor Benny!" Rubble whimpered.

"So not cool." Zuma cringed.

"It's all my fault." Rex said wretchedly. "Benny wouldn't have even been up there if it weren't for me."

"Now isn't the time for blame, Rex." Ryder told him.

"He's right." Rocky agreed. "These things happen."

"I guess..." Rex sighed, unconvinced.

"For this mission, I'm going to need... Rex." Ryder began. "Use the Dino-claw on your ride to clear away the fallen trees."

"Let's dino-do this!" Rex nodded resolutely.

"And... Rubble." Ryder continued. "You can use your ride to help move those trees."

"Rubble on the dino-double!" Rubble stepped forward.

"And... Skye." Ryder announced. "Use your flyer's harness to pick up Benny and get him out of there."

"Let's take to the sky!" Skye flipped.

"Alright! PAW Patrol is on a roll!" Ryder invoked his classic rollout call.

All four operatives descended to the lower level of the tower, boarding their vehicles and moving out.

"This way, team!" Rex led them to the area Benny was trapped in.

As they arrived at the area, Rex called out to his trapped friend.

"I'm back, Benny!" He called. "And I brought help! You'll be out of there in no time!"

"Rrrooo!" Benny grunted happily.

"Okay, pups, time to get to work!" Ryder declared. "Rubble, you're up first."

"You got it, Ryder!" Rubble smiled.

Rubble maneuvered his Triceratops-shaped rig over to the pile of fallen trees. With the push of a button, the "mouth" opened up, and, with some more expert maneuvers, grabbed one of the trees and moved it to one side.

"My turn!" Rex returned to his vehicle. "Ruff! Dino-claw!"

From the rear of the vehicle emerged a larger version of the claw in Rex's Pup-pack. It clamped onto the trunk of one of the trees, lifted it up, and put it down a short distance away.

Working in tandem, the pups steadily most of the other trees.

"Looking good, pups!" Skye encouraged them from her bird's eye view.

Just then, another rumble shook the earth.

"Whoa." Ryder just barely kept his balance.

"It's the volcano!" Rex gasped. Glancing upwards, he saw the plume of smoke at the volcano's peak growing thicker. "It could blow at any time!"

"Better hustle, pups." Ryder urged.

"Don't have to tell me twice!" Rubble nodded.

Working as fast as their machines would allow, Rex and Rubble cleared away the last of the trees.

"Okay, Sky, now it's your turn!" Ryder called.

"Ruff! Harness!" Skye barked out.

A panel on the underbelly of the flyer opened, and a harness descended.

"Hold still, Benny!" Rex told the young Brachiosaurus.

The harness just barely fit around Benny's midsection, and slowly lifted him upwards.

"Almost there..." Skye declared, skillfully guided her flyer to set Benny back on the ground.

KABOOOM!

The volcano finally erupted, sending chunks of burning rock flying everywhere.

"Yikes!" Skye yelped, just barely able to steer her flyer out of one such rock's path. Unbeknownst to her, the sudden movement caused Benny's to lose his grip on the geode, which dropped back down into the crevice.

"Hurry, Skye!" Ryder urged.

"Time for a quick landing!" Skye said hastily.

Skye landed Benny as fast as possible.

"I'm so glad you're safe, big little buddy!" Rex rushed over to him.

"Rrroo!" Benny nuzzled his pup friend.

"...Wait." Rex realized something was missing. "Where's the geode?"

"Rruh!" Benny pointed toward the crevice.

"Oh, no!" Rex cringed. "I've got to get it, fast!"

"Hold up, Rex!" Ryder placed a hand on his Pup-pack. "The lava from the volcano is heading this way!"

Rex glanced over. A stream of molten rock was indeed heading toward the crevice.

"There's still time!". He insisted. "If I'm quick, I could-"

"That hole is too deep!" Skye told him.

"It's not worth the risk!" Rubble chipped in.

"But-!" Rex spluttered.

"Rrr!" Benny lowered his neck, blocking Rex's path. "Rruh-uh!"

"... You're right." Rex sighed. "I already got you in trouble for that geode. I can't make the same mistake again..."

"Let's get out of here, pups!" Ryder urged.

The team boarded their vehicles (Benny hitching a ride on Rex's), and departed the area. As they zoomed away, Rex couldn't help but look back in regret as the lava flowed into the crevice, no doubt completely engulfing the geode.

"So much for the perfect gift..." He turned away.

Soon after, Taylor's birthday party was in full swing. There were party favors, party games, and of course, the opening of gifts by the birthday girl.

"These are all so great!" Taylor beamed, having just unwrapped Skye's gift (a pair of goggles). "Thank you all!"

"Our pleasure, Taylor." Ryder smiled.

Happy birthday, dudette!" Zuma nodded.

The other pups yapped and howled in agreement.

As Taylor looked at their happy faces, she noticed that someone was absent. Looking around, she saw Rex sitting nearby, looking utterly dejected.

"Rex?" She approached him. "What's wrong?"

"I'm sorry, Taylor." Rex said regretfully. "I wanted to get you a really great gift, one that shows just how much your friendship means to me. But I messed up, and Benny almost got hurt because of me."

"Is that why you went to such a precariously perilous place?" Taylor frowned.

"Yeah." Rex bowed his head. "I didn't know there was a volcano there. I just thought I could find the most perfect present there, a present that would prove how much I value your friendship. But I lost it in the lava. I'm so sorry..."

"Oh, Rex. You don't need to get me a perfect present to prove what a pal you are." Taylor assured him. "As far as I'm concerned, you're already the best friend ever!"

"Really?" Rex smiled.

"Really." Taylor grinned.

Laughing happily, Rex leapt up and gave his favorite human a lick on the cheek.

"Hey that tickles!" Taylor chuckled.

Benny couldn't help but join in.

"You're my best friend too, Benny!" Taylor giggled.

Everyone laughed happily as the birthday girl hugged her two best friends.

"Best. Birthday. Ever!" Taylor cheered.
