Chapter 1: End of A Dream

Merlin was in the living room, working on Gwen's computer when the doorbell rang. He sighed and put the RAM stick aside.

It was a deliveryman with a package for Morgana, Gwen's flatmate.

Merlin signed and accepted the thin box. It didn't weigh much, perhaps less than 10grams.

What could it be?

A slight frown creasing between his dark brows when his eyes landed on the address of the sender.

Amata Labs.

It was a pathology laboratory.

"Is that for me?" A voice spoke from behind, startling him.

Merlin almost dropped the box.

He whirled around and found Morgana standing by the door to her room, her gaze fixed on the item in his hands.

What was she doing here? And how come he didn't hear her leaving her room?

"Uhmm,... I didn't know you were here. I'm sorry I didn't mean..." Merlin swayed his weight slightly from side to side.

Morgana pursed her lips together and walked to him, "is that for me?" She asked again, outstretching her hand to take the box from him.

"Yes," He tentatively handed it to her and she began to inspect it. He couldn't ignore the way her entire body tensed when she read the sender's address.

Morgana recovered quickly though. She tried to look unfazed as she set the package aside on the table to his left. She cleared her throat. "It's nothing important," she told him with a dismissive wave of her hand.

It didn't look like it was nothing, but he and Morgana were not close enough for her to feel comfortable to open up to him. She was Arthur's 'sister'. He only got to know her this past Christmas. Not long enough for the two of them to form some sort of deep friendship. "Gwen's computer was starting to get slow. Arthur asked me to check it out for her." He answered the unasked question of what he was doing there.

"Gwen gave me the key to the flat and... I didn't mean to bother..."

Morgana cut him off, "You're not," Her features softened, realizing that she was rude to him. "She mentioned it this morning before leaving. It just slipped my mind for a second."

Merlin gave her a small smile. At least she knew about it. "I'm almost done. Perhaps another 30 minutes to fix everything."

Morgana prickled uncomfortably, glancing to side briefly then rubbing the back of her neck with her hand, "It's no problem. Take as long as you want. No need to rush."

Merlin just hummed, noting how her gaze darted toward her mail before she looked at him again.

"I'll be in my room if you need anything." She said and turned around.

"Ok."

Merlin didn't know what came over him but the words left his mouth on their own accord. "Are you okay? You're not sick or anything, right?"

Morgana stopped and slowly turned to face him. "What? Why... why would you ask that?"

He gestured with his hand at the table. "Amata Laboratory. It's near where I work. "

Morgana walked to the table, grabbed the box and held it with both hands. "I'm fine, Merlin. Physically speaking, at least." With her fingertips, she began to tap on the box. "It's not that kind of test."

"So you're fine?"

"I am." She assured him.

He wasn't convinced, "Are you certain?" She opened her mouth to say something, Merlin continued, "You can trust me, Morgana. Whatever it is, I won't tell anyone."

Merlin's words chased the objection right back down her throat.

Morgana spent a long moment mulling this.

After a period of silence, she finally spoke. "I think Uther might be my father."

He certainly wasn't expecting that. His eyes widened, "What? Are you sure?"

Suddenly, Morgana laughed, but the mirth didn't reach her eyes. "If I was, I wouldn't have done a DNA test." She waved the small package in the air.

"Oh, wow." Merlin breathed out. Perhaps, he shouldn't have asked her to confide in him. This was a huge moment. A life changing moment. He shouldn't be intruding on it. He should have kept his mouth shut. "Do you want me to go?"

She took a deep breath, "The results won't change whether you stay or go. But, I rather not be alone when I read them."

Merlin felt her words swell up inside of him, painfully filling his lungs until it stopped his breath entirely. "I won't go anywhere."

"Thank you Merlin."

Morgana sat by the kitchen island and he took the seat next to her.

She placed the box in front of her and just stared at it. She continued her tapping on the table.

Clearly, it was her way to relieve her anxiety.

He didn't know what was going inside her mind, still he could understand what she was feeling. It wasn't an easy thing to accept that your entire world was based on a lie and Merlin didn't want her to allow hate and anger to control her actions.

"What made you suspect that Uther could be your father?" He asked gently.

Morgana stopped her hand movement, "Do you know how they say that people in coma can feel and hear when there are people around them?"

He just hummed.

"Well, three years ago, I was in a car accident. I was in a coma for twenty days and I had to undergo two head surgeries to stop the haemorrhaging and swelling. It was bad. Real bad." She took a deep breath, "…and he was there. Uther, I mean. And I could hear him talking to the doctors and saying 'save my daughter' and he was repeating the word daughter over and over again. After I woke up, I thought I must have imagined it, because he wasn't the same man I heard speaking to me and pleading for me to wake up. He just wasn't. So I tried to let it go."

"But you couldn't."

She shook her head, "The longer I tried to push the thought away, the more it bothered me. And things, weird things, started to make sense. Why he shipped me to a boarding school ever since I was eleven. Why he didn't allow me and Arthur to spend any time together when we got older. It's like he was afraid that something might happened between us." Morgana looked away, he could see her eyes glistering with unshed tears. "I feel disgusted just thinking about it. Because what if-"

"You don't do yourself any good thinking about that." Merlin told her. "He must have had his reasons not to tell you."

"The only thing I can think of is that he didn't want me."

"You don't know that and until you read what's written in this," He pointed to where the test results were, "you can't think like that. You're just going to hurt yourself."

"Are you really listening to what you are saying right now, Merlin. It's an absolute rubbish." She snapped at him, "If Uther is truly my biological father, it changes everything. Every goddamn thing."

"It shouldn't-"

"Stop it." Morgana hit the table with the palms of her hands and stood up. "It'll mean that for the past 15 years, he let me believe that I was an orphan. That I had no one and all along he was there. I had a father and a brother. Instead, he let me feel like I was nothing more than a burden. Like the only reason he took me in was to honour the wishes of his dead friend."

"Maybe that's why he never told you."

"If he wanted to honour his best friend, then perhaps he should have fucked his wife." She snatched the package and ripped the seal open. She opened the envelope, and then she unfolded it and started to read it.

Her hands were shivering.

It was the longest 5 seconds in his entire life and he watched as different emotions washed over her face. It was fear, then shock and eventually anger.

"Morgana-"

The paper fell from her hands and she collapsed down, "He's my father. That son of a bitch is my father."

Oh, shit! Merlin thought.
