Chapter eight: The Queen of Hearts Part 1
Beams of light shone through the Great Hall, feeling the royal guests with warmth and happiness as they watched the young woman with dark skin and her brown hair walk slowly up the aisle. She was dressed in a royal dress of purple and gold and her hair was styled away from her face. The woman walked up to the dais and knelt down, facing the king and the two thrones.
King Arthur raised his left hand, signalling the servant who had the duty of holding the precious crown. Arthur lifted the crown, the burden lifted from the servant before turning back to the guests as he smiled down at the woman he loved as he gently put the crown on top of her head.
"By the sacred laws vested in me, I pronounce you Guinevere, Queen of Camelot," Arthur said in a loud voice.
Gwen, actually Queen Guinevere, slowly stood up as Arthur took her hand and led her to the throne. When they sat down, she looked at Merlin who smiled happily. He wore a royal blue tunic, black pants and boots with a thin silver crown over his head. Gaius also smiled. Guinevere looked back at Arthur who smiled contentedly at his wife and she smiled shyly back.
...
Morgana lurched upright, breathing heavily. Why was she seeing this dream night after night? Morgana took deep breaths before looking down at her bracelet that Morgause gave her. This bracelet was supposed to stop these nightmares so why wasn't it happening?
Morgana got out of bed and walked over to the window, looking over the city that she will one day rule with her twin by her side.
"Is everything alright, My Lady?" a woman asked, her voice sounding concerned.
Morgana turned around and saw Gwen. The same woman that was plaguing her dreams. The same woman that is getting in her way of becoming Queen of Camelot. Gwen was holding a candle with a worried expression on her face.
Morgana smiled and nodded. "I'm fine," she assured her before turning back to the window, the fake smile removed. "It's late, you should go to bed…"
Gwen bit the inside of her lip at the dismissive tone but smiled. "Well, good night…" she said, curtsying before leaving the room.
"Good night Gwen…" Morgana replied before frowning.
Gwen is a problem. She needs to talk to Morgause as soon as possible!
….
Morgana couldn't sleep after that. She got dressed in her favourite red dress and tied her hair back in an elegant plait before walking around the castle. Since it was late, there was no one in sight to disturb her from her thoughts. Earlier she sent a message to Morgause that she needed to see her urgently.
Morgana sighed as she walked when she heard her name in a whisper.
"Sister…. Sister…"
Morgana smiled; her sister heard her. She followed the voice down a flight of stairs and into a storage room where a door opened and a torch lit up suddenly. Morgana grabbed the light and looked around the room.
Morgana jumped as she felt a presence behind her but smiled when she saw it was Morgause. She dropped the torch and grabbed her sister in a tight hug.
"I can't tell you how good it is to see you," Morgana whispered relieved as she buried her face into Morgause's neck.
"I received your message. Tell me about these dreams that are so troubling to you," Morgause replied as she gently laid a hand on Morgana's cheek.
Morgana frowned and pulled back slightly. "They show a ceremony in Camelot. It's my serving girl, Gwen, she sits beside Arthur on a throne. She's crowned queen. I see the same thing night after night."
Morgause pursed her lips as her hand laid upon Morgana's bracelet. "There are some dreams that are so powerful your healing bracelet will not stop them. It is a prophecy," she said, sighing.
Morgana scoffed. "How can that be? She's a servant. Uther would never allow Arthur to marry her."
"There are many futures, Morgana. Some are shrouded in mist, and others are clear as cut glass. But your gift is powerful, and this vision cannot be ignored. You cannot allow this serving girl to take your rightful place upon the throne. Whatever relationship exists between Arthur and... Gwen, you must destroy it," she replied and Morgana smirked, a plan already forming in her mind.
The two sisters hugged again before departing and Morgana went to bed, feeling slightly reassured that she spoke to Morgause.
….
The next morning, Morgana sat back and observed Arthur and Gwen with a slight frown on her face.
"What news from the northern borders?" Uther asked as he, Arthur and Morgana were sitting down for breakfast.
Arthur cleared his throat. "There've been a number of minor skirmishes," he replied when he reached for Gwen's hand as she was about to fill his goblet. Morgana simply stared at the sight with a frown as she observed.
"You think Odin is testing our defences?" Uther questioned, but Arthur didn't hear him. He was too busy looking at Gwen. "Arthur, are you even listening to me?" he added.
Arthur turned to his father. "What's that?" he said as he accidentally knocked his goblet over.
Uther stood up to avoid the wine that was splashed. "What on earth is wrong with you?" he asked as Morgana's maid cleaned up the mess and Morgana grimaced slightly.
Arthur shrugged. "Nothing. Sorry."
….
Arthur sighed as he sat at his table, twirling a feather quill in his hand looking at the parchment on the table. However, he wasn't reading the words he was writing. His mind kept going towards Gwen. He heard the door open and looked up as he saw Morgana poking her head in.
"Morgana," Arthur blinked in surprise.
Morgana smiled as she closed the door. "Arthur, am I disturbing you?"
Arthur shook his head. "No. Come in. To what do I owe this pleasure?"
"Well, I was worried about you. You weren't yourself at dinner," Morgana said, faking concern.
"Just a bit tired," Arthur replied, slouching in his seat.
Morgana chuckled as she walked over to the pitcher of water and poured herself a glass. ""I thought the reason you were so distracted had something to do with the fact that Gwen was in the room," she said as she sat down next to him.
Arthur shrugged. "I have no idea what you're talking about."
Morgana chuckled. "Come on, Arthur. Why can't you admit you have feelings for her? A blind man could see it," she said, scoffing a little
Arthur slumped back in his chair, staring blankly at Morgana. "Is it really that obvious?"
Morgana smiled, shrugging her shoulder a little. "It's only so obvious to me because...I know Gwen also has feelings for you," she said, lying through her teeth. Inside she was seething with anger.
Arthur leaned forward. "Has she said something?"
"She speaks of you all the time," Morgana said drinking her glass.
Arthur bit the inside of his lip. "What did she say?" he asked, curious.
Morgana chuckled, leaning back in her chair gracefully. "You're already arrogant enough. I will flatter you no further," she joked with a smile before frowning in fake concern. "Poor girl, I fear she doesn't know what to do with herself when she's around you."
Arthur nodded. "She's not alone. I have such feelings for her, and yet I know nothing can ever come of them."
"If it's Gwen who you desire, why do you deny yourself?" Morgana mused, cocking her head to the side with a slight frown.
Arthur shrugged. "Because she's a servant. My father would have me marry for the good of the kingdom," he replied instantly.
Morgana shook her head amused. "Uther knows nothing of love. You are the future king; you must set your own rules. Besides, he doesn't have to find out. You should spend some time with Gwen. I know she'd like that."
With that, Morgana stood up, patted Arthur's arm encouragingly before walking out of the room. Arthur smiled foolishly and didn't see Morgana smirk.
Phase one is complete. Now how to convince the Uther to kill Gwen?
….
A lump of firewood was dumped into a basket. Gwen turned to Merlin, confused.
"Arthur wishes to spend the day with me?" she repeated.
Merlin shrugged. "I thought you'd be happy with the idea."
Gwen sighed. "Well, it isn't that simple. What... what if someone were to find out? What if someone sees us?" she asked, wringing her hands together nervously.
Merlin replied, confident of his idea. "I'll take you to meet him outside the city. Arthur's willing to take the risk...if you are." Merlin replied and watched Gwen started to pace. "Should I tell him you won't meet him?" he asked, with a knowing smile
Gwen turned to him with a frown. "NO!" She quickly denied before slumping her shoulders in defeat. Merlin placed his hand on her shoulder
"You forget, he's Prince Arthur, and that he can be a spoiled, arrogant brat," he teased making Gwen laughed. "You like him," he said and Gwen nodded. "And he likes you. Isn't that all that really matters?" he asked and Gwen sighed.
"I suppose it is," Gwen said quietly, admitting defeat.
…
Morgana smiled as she played with a necklace at her vanity while Gwen was making the bed. So far, things were going to plan. Hopefully, by next week, she wouldn't have to worry about Gwen sitting by Arthur, taking her place as queen.
"Will there be anything else?" Gwen asked quickly, feeling slightly nervous.
Morgana turned to her and shook her head. "No, that'll be all."
Gwen turned to walk towards the door before she spun around. "I was hoping it might be possible to be relieved of my duties tomorrow."
Morgana frowned in fake concern. "Really? And why is that?"
Gwen bit the inside of her lip. "I fear I'm sickening with a fever," she lied.
Morgana blinked in surprise before nodding. "Of course," she replied, waving her hands in a dismissive gesture.
Gwen curtseyed. "Thank you."
As Gwen left the room, Morgana turned to her mirror and smirked. Now to convince Uther to go on a ride with her. That should be easy. No one will believe what is about to happen. Arthur and Merlin wouldn't be able to save their beloved friend until it was too late.
