Chapter 20: The Ball
The strings of the kugo (harp) rung in her ears like a sweet melody from some dream. The bright candlelight lit the crowded ballroom with a warm orange-tinted glow. The chatter continued to grow in volume as the music began to fill the large open space. Many couples began making their way towards the open dance floor, eager to part-take in the first dance of the evening.
Sae nervously looked around the crowd of moving heads, craning her neck as high as possible, and trying to spot the small brunette one of her charge. The dance was about to begin and it was to be Rin's very first public event of the night.
It was also the one she had been the most anxious about.
Sae could still clearly recall the worry in her voice when they had talked about it just that morning ...
"But what if I trip?" Rin speculated, her brows scrunching in concern.
Sae had to laugh. "You are literally the best dancer in this castle! I'd be more concerned about your partner tripping."
Rin was unconvinced. "But that was when it was just me and someone else, I've never had to dance in front of other people before!" There was an underlying note of horror in her words.
Sae placed a hand on her shoulder, kneeling down to eye level. "Rin," she began severely. "You taught me how to dance. If you can achieve that impossible task, then there is literally nothing you can't do."
"Sae!" Rin's exclaimed in exasperation. "I'm serious!"
Chortling, Sae tried to keep her grin under control. "Sorry." She poked her companion on the side of her stomach, where she knew her to be the most ticklish.
Although she squirmed away, Rin's apprehension didn't abate in the least.
Sighing, Sae shifted around to sit next to her on her large bed. "Don't worry Rin, it'll all turn out great. You are a wonderful dancer. Plus, you love to do it. It's about having fun, remember?"
"Yes but ..." Rin trailed off for a second, fidgeting. "But what if I embarrass Lord Sesshomaru? I don't want him to be ashamed of me if I mess up."
"Ah," Sae suddenly understood where all the little girl's concerns were coming from. "So, it's really the lord you are worried about."
Rin nodded, looking down at her small dangling feet.
"Rin," Sae's voice was gentle. "Lord Sesshomaru will be proud of you no matter how you dance. This party is for you, after all. I'm sure all he wants is for you to enjoy your birthday."
Rin's dark eyes looked up hopefully. "Really?"
Sae poked her again, this time earning a girlish giggle. "Of course! Plus, I heard that the boy you're sharing your first dance with is a superb partner. And like you taught me, if you have a strong lead then following will be easy."
"Hmm," Rin mused on that for a moment. "I hope he's nice."
"Me too." Sae nodded. "Else, he'll have me to answer too."
Rin grinned, "And Lord Sesshomaru."
Sae gave a dramatic shudder, causing both girls to eventually break out into laughter.
Smiling at the memory, Sae continued to search for the birthday girl in earnest, hoping to catch her before she had a chance to join the rest of the dancers of the floor.
"Sae!"
Sae turned towards the familiar voice, feeling a wave of relief wash over her as she spotted the little hand waving at her.
"There you are," she greeted after pushing past a few guests to reach her. "I was looking for you."
Rin responded with a timid smile, her hand fidgeting with her glittering pink gown. "I'm still a little nervous," she admitted softly, her small face having lost a little bit of its usual color.
Sae automatically bent down to give her a reassuring hug. "Don't you worry, you'll be great. I have faith in you."
"I-"
"Lady Rin," a young voice broke in. "May I have this dance?"
Both females turned to see the new speaker, finding a young boy with honey colored hair and solemn eyes.
Rin curtsied, a blush rising on her cheeks. "Of course," she said before placing her hand in his outreached palm.
Sae stayed behind, watching them walk towards the center of the large room, one corner of her lips lifted slightly. She couldn't help but feel amused at observing the young couple. They looked like miniature adults, so very properly dressed and well mannered. It was so opposite of what she'd ever experienced in her childhood. She couldn't recall a single time as a child when she acted as remotely proper as they acted now.
It was the ways of growing up in nobility, she supposed.
The instruments began to play in harmony, signaling the start of the dance.
Rin and her partner had already reached the middle of the room, their arms locked in position. Her face now flushed with color, the young girl turned her head back towards her caretaker and shot her a wide-eyed expression.
Sae smiled back reassuringly, hoping to encourage.
A moment later, the music filled every space of the bright ballroom.
Sae admired the different couples whirling around the dance floor as they swept past. The beautiful and colorful gowns flowed behind them like a silk train as the ladies spun. The tall, elegant frame of the men in dark suits were striking in contrast to the glow of the candlelight. It was almost like an art form the way the couples danced in what seemed like perfect unison.
There was a part of Sae that wondered what it would feel like being out there.
But she knew it wasn't her place to yearn for such things. She should be grateful that she'd been able to attend in the first place. After all, only she had been included in enjoying tonight's festivities. Everyone else, apart from the higher-ranking general's and their partners, were there to purely serve the guests. The rest of the company were that of the lord's alliances and peers of the realm.
Therefore, she should feel quite lucky she could enjoy just being another guest …
Sighing, Sae shook her head and tried pulling herself out of a mood. She had promised Asumi she would try. She had known all these things before attending the party. It wasn't as if any of this came as a surprise. She'd just had to figure out another way to entertain herself.
So, try she shall.
That in mind, Sae determinedly made her way to the refreshments table. She'd definitely needed to be hydrated if she was going to attempt at making this ball enjoyable.
Luckily, upon reaching the large crystal bowl, Sae had little trouble pouring herself a couple of drinks and quickly finishing them off. She was on her third when she felt the presence of others reach her side.
Cautiously, Sae turned towards the new comers and was met with the sight of 3 young women with expressions that spoke of years and years of noble birth. They held themselves in the same upright and proud position Sae had come to associate with the aristocracy.
Sae tried mirroring their straight posture. "Hello," she greeted, hoping her smile didn't appear as fake as it felt.
The middle one, her hair piled high on her head, immediately looked down her nose. "Hello," she responded nevertheless, years of being properly brought up no doubt kicking in.
The other two followed her lead, their voices echoing similar notes of haughtiness.
"Great party," Sae commented, after a moment of awkward silence.
"If you say so," the leader said, her tone rather condescending.
The other two giggled, obviously amused by their friend's reply.
Sae's face flushed with heat, immediately recognizing the ridicule. "Rin has been looking forward to this party- "
"Rin?" the middle one immediately interrupted.
"Don't you mean Lady Rin?" the other added.
Sae realized her mistake. "Y-yes, of course-"
"Aren't you her nanny?" the girl with the impossibly high hair asked, her eyes surveying critically over Sae's outfit. "What are you doing present at Lady Rin's ball?"
Sae began feeling flustered. "I- "
"Don't tell me you were invited?" the leader said mockingly, her laugh just a tinkle of a sound. "You? The help?"
"It's preposterous!" the one to her right chimed in, joining the laughter.
"A joke!"
Feeling herself grow impossibly hot, Sae stood rooted in her place. She'd encountered the arrogance of the nobility before and even been the brunt of a few jokes, but never had she had it been so rudely thrown in her face. These girls were purposely trying to be nasty and she was surprised to admit that it left her slightly taken aback.
"Cat got your tongue?"
Sae snapped her mouth closed, grinding her teeth before saying, "No."
Haughty brows rose, "Well then?"
"Yes," Sae's chin rose, her surprise rubbing off. "I am Rin's caretaker. But why does that make me any less of a guest then you?" She stared pointy at the three females standing in front of her.
The one on the right made a scoffing noise, "Because you are merely the help."
"So?" Sae could almost see the lord's face mocking brow as she spoke. "I was invited personally. I doubt any of you three were given the same courtesy."
The leader stiffened noticeably.
"Know your place, servant," she returned in a sharp voice.
Sae's hand balled into a fist, resenting her tone. She knew if she continued down this path it would lead to some type of argument. Which, as a result, would lead to a scene that the lord would not tolerate. Sae did not want to be the reason behind ruining Rin's ball.
Sae inhaled deeply, keeping her temper in check. "My apologies," Sae inclined her head, her jaw tight with tension. "I meant no offense."
The leader of the three eyes gleamed with smugness, as she raised her chin pretentiously. "See that it never happens again."
Sae did not respond, but gave a half-hearted bow before whirling around.
She made her way in the opposite direction, unsure as to where she was going but knowing she had to get as much distance between herself and her "would-be" death-wish. She shouldn't be surprised that those of higher birth considered her beneath them. It was a common practice, she now knew, among the nobility to treat their servants as property rather than actual living beings. The lord and his views of her kind was something she had become very much aware of.
It was just hard to swallow from more than just one arrogant person, that's all.
Sae was halfway across the ballroom before she realized that Rin's first dance was over. She caught her small charge's pink figure surrounded by a few guests her similar age, all appearing to ask for the next dance. It was easy to catch the glow of happiness that Rin radiated as she shyly accepted different partners. She was obviously enjoying the attention and praise.
As she should.
Sae couldn't help but relax, just seeing Rin so happy. She was such a kind and innocent little girl, she deserved nothing but the best experience on her birthday.
Which meant that Sae had to stay away from trouble. She obviously could not help but taking offense to the noble's attitude towards her kind. It was not something that she could just keep quiet about. After months in the lord's company, Sae had grown accustomed to coming to her kind's defense whenever provoked. Sure, she had known he'd done it just to get under her skin, but the habit was hard to break.
At this instant, it seemed, a bad habit to have.
Maybe if I stay in a corner ...
Sae thoughtfully looked to her left, where a small dark corner remained relatively empty. The small spot lay beside a tall thick column, standing between the crowded room and the vacant area. It would be a perfect place to stay hidden from the other guests -particularly the haughty ones- and yet have the opportunity to observe the ballroom. Where Sae could still watch Rin have fun and go to her if she needed her.
That decided, Sae wasted no time striding quickly over to the secret haven and planting herself right where she could see everything.
Moments passed while Sae stood in peaceful silence, her eyes following the guests as they readied to begin another dance. Rin was once again an active participant, looking a lot less worried. Her timid smile had transformed into a full grin as she and her partner took their places on the dance floor.
Sae hummed to the strings of music, smiling softly as she watched the little girl enjoy herself. Perhaps she wasn't living up to her promise to Asumi but there was still a measure of joy to be found in watching those she cared for enjoy themselves. If Rin was happy, then all was well.
"Can you believe it?"
"Who would have thought, after all this time he finally decided to do it."
"I say, it's about time!"
"But who do you think he'll choose?"
Sae shrunk back slightly, hoping the lord and lady who were in deep conversation didn't notice her presence. They seemed rather absorbed in their topic of discussion but she didn't want to test her luck.
"I'm not sure," the older woman continued, the lines on her forehead creasing together. "Someone beautiful no doubt and of high standing."
"He's a powerful lord, he will go with the woman who gains him more land," her companion replied, knowingly.
"I doubt he needs more land," the woman rebuked. "He is by far the most influential and powerful lord of this realm."
The man sighed drearily, as if he heard this talk before. "Yes, of course dear. We can at least both agree that whomever he chooses will be a lady that equals him in fortune and power."
"Undoubtedly," the woman agreed. "I'm still reeling from the idea. Can you imagine? The Lord of the Western Lands, choosing a bride? It's almost impossible to grasp."
"It was only a matter of time."
"Actually, now that I think on it, I did hear a rumor about a girl he'd shown interest in."
"Truly? Who?"
"Some daughter of a lord in the east ..."
Their voices drifted away as they continued to walk past, unaware of the girl hiding behind the pillar.
Sae stopped eavesdropping seconds ago. Her mind couldn't register anything. An odd sensation was making her feel as if her heart was being squeezed too tightly and her stomach had just dropped down to her toes. She couldn't seem to move from behind the shadows, since her feet felt like stone. The sounds that had filled her ears only moments before seemed to fall away and all she was left with was a small dull murmur.
Lord Sesshomaru was getting ... married?
Could it be true? How was that even possible? The unfeeling, emotionless lord was going to take a wife? How long had he been planning to do it? Had his past trips been in search of a bride? Is that why he moved her out of his chambers so abruptly? So he could get ready to bring in the woman he planned to marry?
Sae swallowed hard, feeling as if her emotions were as chaotic as a storm.
Her eyes immediately peered back into the ballroom, unconsciously seeking a familiar tall frame with long white hair. She found him by the staircase, engaged in a conversation with one of his generals, his emotionless face turned away from her line of sight.
Her heart feeling as if it were being squeezed even tighter, Sae tore her eyes away. What was wrong with her? Why did it matter that the lord was getting married? It shouldn't bother her either way. She'd always known his past behavior had just been a ploy to gain an upper-hand. His embraces meant nothing. His touch meant nothing. His kisses meant nothing.
Sae squeezed the fabric over her chest, wishing that this persistent sensation would just go away. It didn't make sense. There was no reason for her to get emotional over this. No reason at all. In fact, she should be happy. Now, the lord would have someone else to torment on a daily basis. Because surely being married to that cold and heartless creature would be nothing but a form of hell.
I pity her, Sae thought, ignoring the insincerity behind her conviction.
The woman would no doubt have to put up with the overbearing and arrogant behavior for the rest of her life. Sae could just imagine all the stress that would come from that task alone. She would have to attend to all his needs whenever he demanded it. His wife would have little room for her own time, since Sae knew how much he put his comfort and demands above all others.
Well, except for Rin ...
Or maybe -Sae thought with a pang- he would actually treat his wife with thoughtfulness and respect. Rin was the only female that held any special place in his life. A wife, would certainly become another important female to him. She would be his partner for the rest of his days and bear his children. Why wouldn't that entail appreciation?
"Miss, are you alright?"
Sae looked up, her eyes meeting with kind, blue ones. "What?"
A handsome man stood with an expression of concern. "I asked if you were alright?" he gestured to her form. "You look as if you were feeling unwell."
Sae followed his gesture towards her arm leaning heavily against the pillar and her hand still clutching at her chest. "Oh," she immediately stood straight and pulled her arms down to her sides. "I hadn't realized I was ... um ... doing that."
He smiled, the crinkles around his eyes appearing genuine. "That's quite all right, I wouldn't blame you. Especially if you sampled that seafood dish," he gave a playful shudder. "It would cause anyone distress."
"It's not that bad," Sae protested, immediately offended. She had ordered it, after all. "I'll have you know it's considered a delicacy up in the north. I've heard that all the noble men demand it for every special occasion."
"Noble men with no taste buds," he snorted with amusement.
Sae sniffed. "You, sir, don't know what you're talking about."
"Perhaps," he conceded, before his look suddenly became thoughtful. "You wouldn't be Lady Rin's nanny everyone keeps whispering about, would you?"
"What?" Sae was dumbfounded. "Who's whispering?"
The handsome stranger leaned in, a conspiring air about him. "Everyone," he whispered, grinning.
"T-that's absurd," She objected, trying not to be charmed by his crinkled eyes and flashing dimples.
"It's true," he nodded, leaning back. "You can't turn anywhere without hearing about the audacious nanny who insulted the delicate sensibilities' of three young noble ladies."
"I did not!" Sae burst out, without thinking. "She- They- urgh I mean, they were the ones-"
"I see," he was tapping his chin, appearing very entertained. "That makes perfect sense."
"Listen," Sae exhaled, a little flustered. "I hadn't meant to insult them-"
But he held up a hand, stopping her. "No need to apologize, miss, I completely understand. In fact, I think those spoiled harpies deserved it. About time someone gave them a dose of their own medicine."
"You do?" Sae was perplexed, quickly scanning his outfit again. His suit spoke of money and his stance was definitely that of noble birth. So, he was most unquestionably a lord of this realm. But why would he side with a servant over one of his own peers?
His dimples flashed again. "Certainly. Don't you think they deserved it?"
"Yes," She blurted out and instantly blushed. "I-I mean no, of course not."
"Don't worry," he leaned in again, using a low voice. "Your secret is safe with me."
Her blush deepening, Sae averted her gaze from his piercing blue one. There was something very different about this stranger but also extremely likeable at the same time. It was an odd combination.
"Now," he took a small step back and bowed formally at the waist. "For a proper introduction. I am Lord Nao Inoue."
Sae curtsied, remembering the proper way Rin had taught her. "Sae Nakamura."
He smiled, gratified. "Miss Nakamura, it is a pleasure to meet you."
Sae couldn't help but smile back. "Likewise."
He held out a hand. "Would you do me the honor of granting me this dance?"
Sae's ears caught the starting of a new song, as her eyes followed the offered hand to the face that owned it. His handsome face was lit with amusement, the features set in an inviting way. She couldn't quite put her finger on it, but there was something rather trusting about this lord. He did not speak to her in arrogant tones or look down his nose at her. He looked at her the same way Rin looked at her. Like his equal.
She slowly slipped her hand in his. "I'd like that."
His grin grew and he turned to lead her onto the dance floor.
Her stomach beginning to flutter with nervousness, Sae let herself be lead out into the open.
Once they made it among the other couples, she could practically feel different eyes locking onto her. Having heard from Lord Inoue about the gossip going around about her, it wasn't that much of a surprise to hear the whispering that began to grow in volume as she stepped into the middle of the ballroom.
"Ignore them," Lord Inoue advised, pulling her into the proper position.
Sae placed her hand on his shoulder and looked up at him. "Easy for you to say, you don't have to answer to a merciless demon at the end of the day."
He chuckled. "True, but you are still a guest are you not? That entitles you to dance if you please."
"I guess," Sae muttered, giving a sideways looks towards the spectators. Many ladies were fluttering their fans in front of their faces as they were obviously staring at the servant girl taking her place along with the other couples. Sae could not miss their judgmental gazes as they looked her up and down and found her wanting.
"Hey," Lord Inoue steered her attention away from the onlookers. "Are you going to be staring at the gawkers the whole dance? Or enjoy the pleasure of my marvelous dancing skills?"
Sae's eyes immediately shot back to her partner. "Marvelous dancing skills?" she echoed.
He grinned confidently, "If I do say so myself."
"Well in that case ..." The side of her lip curved up. "I'll be sure to make an extreme effort to step on your toes as much as possible."
Lord Inoue laughed.
"I must warn you," Sae began, knowing the dance was about to start. "I'm fairly new at this."
He mock winced. "So, you mean you really will step on my toes?"
"Possibly," Sae grimaced.
"We'll take it slow at first," he encouraged, noting her embarrassment. "Ok?"
Sae nodded and took a fortifying breath when the music began to start.
Lord Inoue took the first step and lead her into dance. Sae couldn't keep herself from looking down and making sure she was taking the right steps. With Rin, it had been easier. There had been room for error. But in this instant, she really didn't want to make a fool out of herself. Stepping on toes purposely was one thing, stepping on toes for lack of skill was another.
"Are you ... counting?"
Sae immediately looked up, blushing. "No."
His lips turned up at the corners. "Oh, I could have sworn you said '1, 2, 3'."
"T-That's ridiculous!" Sae laughed awkwardly. "Why would I be counting?"
His look acute, Lord Inoue pulled her in a little closer and looked upon her with his blue gaze. "Don't be nervous. I can tell you are a natural. Just let me lead and I promise everything will work out fine. If not, you have permission to step on my toes any time you want."
A reluctant smile spread across her face. "Ok," she finally answered and let him lead.
He spun her around the whole dance floor, never missing a chance to dip, twirl, or turn her. She'd hate to admit it, but the arrogance about his dancing skills were not unfounded. Halfway through the dance, Sae was enjoying herself so immensely that she almost forgot all about those watching her every move. She lost herself in the music and the effortless flow of being turned around the dance floor.
Rin had been right. With the right lead, following was easy. Enjoyable, even.
As the last notes of the music began to fade away, Sae was left breathing a little heavily but grinning, nonetheless.
"See," her partner said smugly, leading her off the dance floor. "A natural."
Her arm wrapped around his, Sae gazed up to meet his eyes. "Thank you."
"My pleasure," he returned, his smile revealing those charming dimples. "Now that I've shown you the way of the dance, you have to do me a favor."
"Oh?" Sae's expression became skeptical. "And what's that?"
His smile slowly grew mischievous. "You'll see."
The village was quiet. The sound of crickets filled the night air like a soothing lullaby. Fireflies filled the open meadow like little stars from the night sky. A hut lay on the corner of the village, it's windows lit by the warm fire burning inside.
Within the small cozy shelter, he began to rouse.
"Kagome, I think he's finally waking up."
The young voice came from somewhere to his right. He tried opening his eyes but felt as if a ton of rocks were weighing them down.
"Give him some room, Shippo," a female voice responded. "He's still very weak."
As Youhei became more aware of the voices, the pain began to set in. He groaned, the excruciating agony consuming his conscious mind.
"Where does it hurt?" the female's soothing voice asked, before a cool sensation was placed on his forehead.
He swallowed, instantly heedful of his dry throat.
"Here." Crisp liquid was gently poured into his mouth.
"Is that better?"
He nodded, despite the splitting pain that engulfed his head. He heard nothing for a few moments, just the peaceful chimes that drifted from outside. He lay motionless, slowly discerning every sharp stab that pierced all throughout his body. As his thoughts slowly started to form, his eyes moved more willingly behind his lids.
Sluggishly, he was able to pry them open. At first, he could only make out shapes. A lithe distinctly female form was kneeling at the foot of his cot, her face a fuzzy blur. A smaller, rounder figure was peeking from behind her shoulder, the bright orange hair striking.
"Where am I?" his voice was unrecognizable to even his ears, the sound grated and coarse.
"In Kaede's hut, she is the priestess of this village," the girl responded, sounding concerned. "We found you lying on the side of the road and brought you back here. You ... you were badly injured."
He blinked a few times, trying to focus on her face. "How long have I been here?"
"A couple of weeks- No, don't move!" the girl's hands were immediately placed on his shoulders, holding him down. "You are still very hurt."
"I have to go-" he cut off, hit by a wave of pain that shot straight into his abdomen.
"Argh!" he moaned in agony, curling into a ball in an attempt to withhold a scream.
"You should have listened to Kagome," the younger voice broke in. "She's been taking care of your wounds for a while."
Youhei wanted to shoot the kid a glare but he couldn't bring himself to move quite yet.
"Shippo," the girl said, with a chastening tone. "Go get Kaede, we need more of her herbs."
He immediately began to whine. "But Kagomeeeee-"
"Shippo."
There was a disgruntled sigh. "O-kay."
Sweat dripping down his forehead, Youhei was finally able to grit through the pain and cracked one eye open. He found the girl named Kagome hovering over his shoulder, her eyes worried. "I'm fine," he said roughly, lying.
"You have to lye back down," she gently nudged him to his back, careful not to touch any of his bandages.
Reluctantly, Youhei allowed her to position him, breathing through the torment shooting up and down his body. "I have to go-"
"Not right now you aren't," she broke in sternly, reaching over for a bowl filled with water. She dipped the linen cloth into it and brought it back to his forehead. "You need more time to heal."
Youhei began to shake his head vigorously, only to wince at the sharp pain. "You don't understand," he said through gritted teeth. "I have to find my sister-"
"Sae."
"What?" Youhei focused on her face for once, blinking when he began to see black dots forming behind his eyes. "What did you say?"
She was staring in sympathy. "Sae."
He tried clearing his vision, feeling as if he was falling under again. "How did you-"
"You kept calling out her name in your sleep," her voice began to sound like it was far away. "Is she your sister?"
"Yes," Youhei tried fighting back the darkness, unwilling to waste any more time. "She is my sister and I have to go-"
Kagome said something else, a compassionate note to her words. But Youhei's ears were ringing, the sound becoming louder and louder like a bell going off nearby. "I have to save her," he said, but wasn't sure if the words actually passed through his lips. He felt himself going numb again, the abyss once again engulfing him. He tried one last time, "Please, I have to go get her. She's in trouble."
His lids closed against his will before he lost consciousness.
"Go ahead, try it."
"I really don't see the point-"
"Come on, just try it."
"Is this really necessary?"
"Yes. Try it."
Sae sighed. "If I do, will you drop it?"
Lord Inoue nodded. "Yes. Now eat it."
Sae looked down at the small piece of seafood and really wished she hadn't made a fuss about it earlier. Upon observing the food, there really was something a bit off about the color and definitely questionable about the smell.
"Go on, try it," her annoying companion persisted.
Sae shot him a look before taking a big breath. "Fine," she said and quickly shoved the small suspicious piece into her mouth.
Lord Inoue's face was set in an expectant expression. "Well?"
Sae continued to chew, although she instantly regretted it the moment it hit her tongue. "Great," she attempted to mumble, trying hard not to spill the contents of her mouth back out.
Inspecting her a moment longer, he began to grin. "It's gross, isn't it?"
Sae was shaking her head in denial when she bit down again, this time encountering an unpleasant crunch that exploded the foulest taste into her mouth. "Oh, my god," Sae grabbed a napkin and spit the rest of the monstrosity onto it.
"Do you believe me now?" Lord Inoue asked, handing her another napkin.
"How can anyone think that's a delicacy?" Sae demanded between wipes of her tongue. "That is the most disgusting thing I have ever tasted! And I've eaten pretty gross things in my day."
"You were certainly misled," he supplied, regarding her in amusement.
"Fine," she gave in, knowing when she was bested. "You were right. It was disgusting."
Surprisingly, he shrugged looking as if it was unimportant. "I just wanted you to know that a "delicacy" from certain "noble" families does not mean it is good. Don't believe everything they say because it comes from nobility. You have to verify and confirm that what a trader is telling you is actually true."
"I'll keep that in mind," she said, wondering.
"What?" he asked, catching her look.
"You ..." Sae tried finding the right words. "You aren't like the rest of them, are you?"
"Them?" he appeared slightly puzzled.
Sae gestured towards the crowded ballroom, where there were still quite a few people who were whispering and pointing at her.
"Ah," a look of comprehension dawned on his face. "You are talking about those of noble birth."
Sae nodded, silent.
"You flatter me, Miss Nakamura-"
"Sae."
"What?" he seemed surprised.
"You may call me Sae," Sae repeated. "Nakamura feels too formal."
"Alright," his smile was quietly pleased. "Sae it is, then. And you may address me as Nao."
"No," Sae shook her head, knowing the others would burn her at the stake for the familiarity. "You must be addressed by your title. But I have none so Sae is okay."
He paused but conceded the notion.
"Sae, I believe you think too highly of me," he continued, humility evident in his tone. "I would not say I am all that different from my fellow peers. I am a lord, after all. I have duties and obligations that I must fulfill. Perhaps I do not agree with all ideals of the noble class, I admit. I believe there is much progress to be made within our class and a more idealized way of thinking. But, I don't think that warrants me being unique among my fellow noblemen."
"Really?" Sae arched her brows, finding his honesty refreshing. "You don't think a lord that can speak to a servant with respect unique? Have you even met anyone of your stature?"
He gave a chuckle. "I will admit there are those who think very highly of themselves but there are decent ones too."
"There are more like you?" Sae asked doubtfully, trying to recall a single instant when a nobleman had treated a servant like her with any type of courtesy. In her experience, they were all arrogant selfish individuals who could care less about the regard of others. Particularly of the help.
"Yes," he answered, his smile empathetic. "I take it you haven't met many?"
She snorted. "Other than you? None."
"Stop it," he said playfully. "Or you'll make me blush."
Sae grinned.
"May I just say, you have a lovely smile."
"Oh," Sae flushed, feeling self-conscience. "Thank you."
Lord Inoue noticed her blush and grinned, "I didn't mean to embarrass you."
"You didn't," Sae denied, her neck burning. "I was just ... surprised, that's all."
"I see." There was distinct amusement in his words.
Sae's eyes narrowed. "Isn't it customary for the noblemen to fetch his partner a drink?"
"It is," he confirmed, his eyes dancing.
Sae waited for a moment before asking, "Well, are you going to fetch me one?"
"Of course, I'll be right back," he bowed before walking towards the refreshments table, chuckling to himself.
Sae crossed her arms, watching him walk away. There was something particularly odd about this lord. But she couldn't help but like him anyway. He was kind and modest. Not traits she had come to associate with the nobility. Decidedly, not with Lord Sesshoumaru.
It may have come as a surprise and Sae was not sure if she could trust it yet, but she was amazed to discover that not allnobility was bad.
"Are you enjoying the night's festivities?"
Instantly, Sae's instincts went on alert.
Turning towards the deep voice, Sae's heart began to beat like a loud drum. Her eyes traveled from his long well-dressed form up to his strong shoulders and finally met the cool golden eyes. She swallowed. "My lord," she curtsied, knowing he expected as much.
A brow arched. "Rin taught you well, I see."
Sae's chin rose automatically. "She did."
His eyes narrowed very slightly at her gesture but he made no move to comment. Instead, he moved in closer, his presence immediately overwhelming hers. "I see you gathered up the courage to ask one of the noblemen to dance with you," he observed coldly, his eyes intent.
Sae had a hard time not taking a step back. "He asked me," she retorted. "I thought it rude to deny him."
"You thought it rude?" the lord said tauntingly. "You, who continuously show me disrespect? You, who is incapable of following simple orders?"
Sae's jaw clenched, her formal opinion of nobility rising up tenfold. "I did not think it wise, my lord" –she couldn't keep the irony from her voice- "to insult your guest. I was put in charge of Rin's ball and her happiness. Causing a scene would have made matters worse."
"Like the scene you caused with the ladies earlier?" his tone bore no emotion.
Sae swallowed back her defensive retort. She already knew what his response to it would be. The lord's guests were always in the right and his servants in the wrong. Sae would be no exception. "I apologized for the misunderstanding."
"Is that so," his eyes mocked her. "I suppose that will put a stop to all the gossip going around about a servant that doesn't know her place."
Sae's glared up at him, pushing away the sting that arose from his words. "You-"
"Her place?" a new voice interrupted, a welcome sound to her ears. "And what place would that be, Lord Sesshomaru?"
Both Sae and Sesshomaru turned to see the new comer, finding Lord Inoue carrying two glasses of punch with a polite expression on his face. He slowly walked up to Sae and handed her a glass, looking for all-the-world as if Lord Sesshoumaru's presence did not disturb him.
Which it shouldn't, Sae supposed, accepting the drink with a grateful look. Lord Sesshomaru and Lord Inoue were peers of the same class.
"Lord Inoue," Sesshomaru said emotionlessly, calmly regarding the other nobleman.
Lord Inoue nodded back. "Lord Sesshomaru."
"You'll have to excuse my ward's caretaker," the lord's voice was low. "She is young and still uneducated about the social classes."
"Really," Lord Inoue took a calm sip of his drink. "I have to disagree with you. I find her to be a rare treasure, Lord Sesshomaru. She is unlike any female I have come to know."
Lord Sesshomaru's whole demeanor changed. "It that so."
Lord Inoue had a thoughtful expression. "Quite. Miss Nakamura, here, is a delight that cannot be replicated. I am surprised this is the first time I've met her. Surely, you have seen what an extraordinary find she is."
"Indeed," Lord Sesshomaru's tone did not encourage.
"That being said," Lord Inoue placed his glass down on a nearby table and turned towards Sae. "I hope I'm not stepping out of bounds when I ask for the next dance, Miss Nakamura?"
Taken aback, Sae gulped down the sip she'd been drinking. "O-of course," she acquiesced, shooting a small glance towards the lord before quickly taking Lord Inoue's hand. If looks could kill, she was sure Lord Sesshomaru's piercing glare would have knocked her out cold.
"Well that was awkward," Lord Inoue joked, once they made it to the dance floor.
Sae shot a quick look back towards the lord. "You didn't have to do that." She returned her gaze back to her partner. "I could have handled it myself."
Lord Inoue cocked his head. "I have no doubt you would have. But what I said was true, you truly are a rare female, Sae."
"N-no," Sae's face turned bright red.
Lord Inoue's smiled. "I won't embarrass you further by arguing the point. But I would like the chance to see you again, Sae. If you'd allow it."
"I ..." Sae wasn't sure exactly what to say.
This was the first time a male had ever asked her permission to see her. She wasn't even sure what he really wanted from it. He may be kind and courteous, but he was still nobility. Lords like him did not fraternize with girls like her. Unless they wanted something.
But she wouldn't discredit him by accusing him of dishonorable intentions. He had been nothing but gracious and polite in her company. She could not fathom Lord Inoue as anything other than a gentleman of honor.
"I will not allow it."
Lord Inoue abruptly came to a stop, looking past her shoulder at the owner of the monotone voice.
Sae didn't have to turn around to know who it was.
"Lord Sesshomaru," there was actually evidence of annoyance in Lord Inoue's words. "Was there something you wished to discuss? I am in the middle of a dance but I'd be more than happy to indulge you when it's over."
"No." Sae could feel the warmth of the lord's body as he stepped right up to her back and began to wrap his arm around her waist. "I came to cut in."
Under her fingertips, Sae could feel Lord Inoue's shoulders tense up before he stepped back and allowed Lord Sesshomaru to take his place. He knew, like everyone else, that Sesshomaru was not a demon lord to be reckoned with. "Of course," he relented, shooting Sae a tight smile before walking towards the side of the ballroom.
Lord Sesshomaru came to stand in front of her.
Her heart began to beat faster. Her stomach started to flutter like butterflies. Her cheeks felt as if they were on fire. She wasn't even sure what just happened. One minute she was dancing with Lord Inoue and the next she was being pulled into the strong arms of Lord Sesshomaru.
She swallowed loudly, trying to get her breathing under control.
Silently, Lord Sesshomaru wrapped his arm around her narrow waist and swept them into the dance.
Sae wasn't sure how she kept from stumbling or falling, but she did. Her heart in her throat, Sae followed Lord Sesshomaru as he elegantly led her around the dance floor. His strength was prominent even as he danced. Every sweep and turn he took her was so effortlessly graceful that Sae almost felt like she was flying. There was something very natural about dancing with him. Sae didn't have to think twice about what foot to place next. It was almost as if he could sense exactly how she was going to move and smoothly took her into the next step.
For the first time, Sae actually felt elegant and refined. Almost like a real lady.
Everything and everyone seemed to fall away. It was like Sae and Lord Sesshouaru were to the only two people in the whole ballroom. The music took over the loud whispers and chattering, the bright candlelight blurred out the details of the room, and the lord blocked out any other person that came into her line of sight.
After another few moments, Sae finally worked up the courage to look up. She found his striking gaze already on her, with an intensity that made her feel a little light headed.
"You will not dance with Lord Inoue again," he broke the silence, his eyes looking directly into hers.
Sae took a moment to register what he said. "But why?" she demanded, feeling genuinely disheartened by the idea. "He has been nothing but nice to me."
"Exactly," there was a slight growl to his tone. "I don't want him filling your head with silly ideas."
"Silly ideas?" A spark lit her eyes. "You mean about treating others, even servants, with courtesy?"
"Exactly." His face could have been carved out of granite.
"And why should that bother you, my lord?" sarcasm dripped from her voice. "Are you afraid that someone might actually think humans worthy of respect? Does that discredit everything you've ever believed to be true?"
"Don't be a fool," He tightened his hold around her waist. "Lord Inoue may speak of equality but he is as much of a lord as I. He doesn't believe one word he has spoken to you from the moment you met. There is much you do not understand about the politics in the nobility. That you were naïve enough to believe him just shows your ignorance."
"You're just saying that," Sae shot back, unwilling to believe a word he said.
"Enough female, you are testing my patience," Lord Sesshomaru's tone was a warning. "You may think me heartless and cruel but at least I do not hide behind a nice face and pretty lies."
Sae looked away, her eyes straying towards the last place she had seen Lord Inoue. When she didn't see him there she scanned the rest of the crowd and found him nowhere to be seen. The fact left her feeling a little disappointed. Had he just left without waiting for her reply? Had he lost interest merely because Lord Sesshomaru stepped in? Was the lord right, then?
"You will stay by my side for the rest of the night."
Sae's snapped her head back towards him, her mouth open in denial-
"Do not fight me on this," His face was back to its usual emotionless mask. "It is obvious that I cannot leave you alone in the present company. You are still too inexperienced to determine ally from foe."
"I can handle myself," she stated stubbornly.
"Indeed," his voice implied the opposite. "Nevertheless, you will stay with me until the ball is over."
"But what about Rin?" she asked, desperate for any reason not to be trailing after the lord for the rest of the night. Not only would it be uncomfortable but she could just see all her new-found freedom withering away into nothing. This had been the first time in a long time she didn't have to answer to the lord every couple of hours. He'd been too preoccupied entertaining his other guests to pay the slightest attention to her. So, she'd been free to wander and silently observe at her leisure.
Now, she'd be stuck with Lord High-and-Mighty.
"Rin is waiting for me to return to her side as we speak," he informed her coolly, ignoring her despair. "She, unlike you, understands that staying by me will keep those trying to take advantage of her at bay."
"Right," Sae said hollowly. If he thought she'd thank him for keeping her chained to his side, he had another thing coming.
The dance was over in another matter of seconds, in which Lord Sesshomaru lead her away from the dance floor and towards the upper balcony next to the staircase. It was a remote area out-looking the rest of the ballroom, the curtains on each side creating a private space away from the bustling crowd. A small party of guests were gathered around Rin, each taking their turn to speak and listen to the birthday girl attentively.
"Sae," Rin exclaimed happily, once she spotted Lord Sesshoumaru and her approaching.
Sae smiled, forgetting the silent demon by her side. "Hey Rin, are you having fun?"
"So much fun!" Rin answered excitedly, her grin spread across her face. "I danced all the dances so far! And everyone is just so nice and friendly! This has been the best birthday ever!"
Sae chuckled, enjoying the joy and bliss radiating off of the little girl. "I'm so happy for you," she said honestly, bending down and giving her a hug. "You deserve the best birthday ever."
Rin pulled back and smiled up at her. "You're having fun too, right?"
Sae stared into her expectant face, wondering how to answer. It hadn't been a terrible night, per se. There had even been moments that had been somewhat enjoyable. Plus, like Asumi had said just last night, there were plenty of others who would have killed just to attend the ball. Sae shouldn't shame them by only focusing on the negative parts.
"Of course, Rin," she replied reassuringly. "It's been amazing."
Rin giggled happily. "Good. I'm going to go back to talking to my new friend. She's from a castle up North and she says that we've been the best hosts because we served her favorite dish! Can you believe it, Sae? She said my birthday is the best one she's been to!"
Sae couldn't stop herself from snickering as she let Rin go. Consequently, the dish that had caused her a slight grievance earlier was the reason behind Rin's budding friendship.
Ironic.
"What is so funny?"
Sae looked over her shoulder and shrugged. "Nothing."
Lord Sesshomaru came to her side, looking out towards the ballroom down below. His golden eyes scanned the heads of his guests, undoubtedly never missing one detail about the event going on. His features, as per usual, revealed nothing. But Sae had spent enough time in his company to catch the subtle hints he gave when he wasn't paying attention.
Like now, for instance.
His eyes may have been looking over the on-goings of the ball, but his taunt shoulders revealed his state of tension.
He'd been like that ever since he'd taken her away from the company of Lord Inoue. Had she not known better, she'd say something had upset him about the encounter. But she knew that was impossible. The lord rarely got upset over prosaic things like that. Lord Inoue must have just hit a nerve.
What that nerve could have possibly been, Sae hadn't the slightest clue.
They stood in silence, as Sae pondered about her evening. She surveyed the bustling guests, the chatter and clinking of glasses reaching her ears. At the left side of the room stood the three ladies that she'd encountered before, seeming to have found a new target for their distain; A plump young girl with an unfortunate ruffled gown that brought to mind a particular fruit. Sae tightened her fist then released it. There was not much she could do from up here, anyway. No reason to get upset about it all over again. It wasn't her place to get in the middle of the nobility. Their class would do what is had always done for generations.
Sae looked around some more, still unable to locate the familiar head of Lord Inoue. There was a part of her that wanted to verify what the lord had said to be true. But was also afraid to know for sure. She'd like her memory of the kind humble lord to stay untainted for years to come. That way, she could have the hope that there really were lords out there that didn't think of her kind as beneath them or see servants as mere objects.
"Someone you looking for?" There was a coldness intertwined with the question.
"No," Sae lied, refusing the bait.
"Do you think me an idiot?" his voice deepened. "You still think to go after that lord? After I have told you to stay away from lords such as he? Are you trying to test my patience, female?"
"You said I couldn't dance with him, not that I couldn't talk to him," she countered, unable to fight the urge to defy him.
Suddenly, she felt a large hand grab her arm and spin her around. It took a minute for her to gain back her senses before she could focus on the lord's stormy face.
"Do not try me, female," he practically radiated menace. "It will not end well for you."
Sae was feeling surprisingly pleased by his anger. It was no less than what he deserved for ruining her chance at having a decent night. "What are you going to do? Throw me back into the dungeons?"
His fingers tightened around her arm. "You are going to wish you'd never said that."
With that, he spun and pulled her into a small enclave behind a curtain in one smooth movement.
Sae panicked. The instant her back touched the wall, she forced in a breath, opened her lips-
He bent his head and kissed her.
Not gently.
Hard. Ravenously. Her lips had been parted; his tongue filled her mouth with no by-your-leave.
Sae tried to remain passive –he would not silence her by playing his games- but failed.
He marched in and laid claim. His lips commanded, demanded –rapaciously seized her wits. Captured her senses.
Exploding heat rolled over her in a hot wave.
His, she realized on a mental gasp, not just hers.
The realization utterly dumbfounded her; since when did he have this much heat?
Yet the ability to think, to reason, to do anything other than feel and respond had flown.
She didn't at first realize she was kissing him back; once she did, she tried to stop –but couldn't. Couldn't drag her senses from their fascination, from their greedy excitement. Regardless of all wisdom, she wasn't able to disengage, not from him, not from this.
He made it harder yet when he angled is head, slanted his lips over hers, and deepened the kiss –not by degrees, but in one bold, senses-shattering leap.
Her hands had slip up to his shoulders; they gripped, clung as their mouths melded –as he relentlessly pressed his advantage, rolled over her defenses and drew her with him into the scorching, shatteringly intimate exchange. She couldn't comprehend how his rapacious kisses, his hard-hungry lips, his bold thrusting tongue, caught her, trapped her, then delivered her up, captive to her own responses. It wasn't his will making her kiss him back, as if despite all good sense, she couldn't pull herself away from his thinly veiled possession.
She'd always sensed the lord would be much more skilled at this than anything she'd ever known; what she hadn't known, would have never guessed, was that she would respond so flagrantly, so invitingly –that she would welcome it.
Yet that was precisely what she was doing –and she couldn't stop.
Her experience with men was limited, yet this ... was something entirely beyond her ken.
No man had made her heart beat like this, made her blood sing, sent it racing through her body.
With his lips on hers, with just a kiss, he transformed her into a liquid puddle –and some part of her heart leaped at the idea.
She was clinging to his shoulders, deeply ensnared in their kiss. Her knees had weakened; his hands locked about her waist, he held her upright.
The movement brought a moment of sanity and Sae tried to grapple with her thoughts. What was she doing? This was exactly what she'd been warning herself against. Had she not just realized that his embraces meant nothing? In the end, he just wanted the upper hand.
This means nothing, she mentally repeated, but her limbs didn't answer her call and was lost a moment later when he smoothly gathered her tighter into his arms, surrounding her with his strength, a strength that, as such close quarters, warmed her insides.
Tempted and enticed.
She hadn't expected that. She usually couldn't abide being held, confined, restricted. Controlled. It went against her very nature. Yet when he drew her against him, against his hard frame, all resistance fled; she had to fight a far-too-revealing urge to abandon all senses and sink against him.
"Where did Lord Sesshomaru and Sae go?"
Sae stiffened, recognizing the voice instantly.
Lord Sesshomaru broke to kiss, pulling his head up and staring steadily into her face.
"Perhaps they went to get refreshments?" another voice supplied, sounding young and feminine.
There was a strong silence.
"You're probably right," Rin finally replied. "I better head back to the ballroom, my next partner is waiting for me to join him for the next dance."
The sound of two girlish giggles faded as they made their way back downstairs.
Sae finally let out the breath she had been holding, finding herself still wrapped in the lord's arm, caged against his hard muscles and the wall. She gulped and lifted her face to meet his eyes.
His features revealed nothing, but his eyes were severe. "You make it ... difficult."
"Difficult?" Sae's voice was barely above an octave.
There was something about his aura that made Sae believe he was about to say something, but then his disposition changed and instead the lord slowly unwrapped his arms around her and set her away from him.
Sae crossed her arms in front of her chest, trying not to notice how cold it was without his body heat.
"Understand this," he began, grabbing her attention. "I may give you liberties that I do not allow others. Rin may see you as more than just a servant of this castle. And I may choose to indulge in rights given to me as your lord, but that does not give you the freedom to fraternize with other lords of this realm."
"So, remember" -He grabbed her chin and brought their face only centimeters apart- "You are mine."
Her temper unfurled –she felt it spread its wings; she tried not to rise up to his usual baiting, but it had a mind of its own and flew. "I am not yours," she retorted, feeling her upper lip curl. "I am my own person. Neither you nor any other lord will ever own me. You may think that being your servant makes it easier to have control over another living being but it doesn't. I will never be anyone's."
His face hardened before he crushed his lips against her for a split second before releasing her. "We shall see."
Sae shot him a glare. She was past caring at this point. He had a hold on her that she couldn't understand and she was tired of it. He could so easily manipulate her senses when he went on as if nothing ever affected him. It was unfair.
"My lord?" a new voice interrupted, sounding unsure.
Lord Sesshomaru coolly straightened to full height and turned around. "What is it, General?"
The general took a quick look between the lord and Sae and seemed to realize he interrupted something. "I-I was told to inform you right away when the Lord of the Eastern Lands and his daughter arrived."
"You may tell Lord Heishi I will join him in a moment."
"Yes, my lord." The general bowed and then disappeared.
The room was left in abrupt silence, the guests from earlier having departed with Rin and her friend. The only sound was the consistent noise from the festivities downstairs.
"You will stay up here until I return," Lord Sesshomaru stated coldly, all proof of his earlier heat gone. "I do not need to concern myself with you getting into more trouble for the rest of the night. If you are not here when I return I will not hesitate to take Rin away from your care, understood?"
He didn't wait for a response before he left.
"Argh!" Sae uttered in frustration when the door slammed shut behind him. Every time. Every time something like this happened the lord was left with the last word and she was left feeling more confused and conflicted than ever.
He'd just kissed her with a fire that she hadn't even known existed in this world yet he was going ...
Sae slowly inched toward the balcony overlooking the ball. She easily spotted Lord Sesshomaru gliding past the guest towards a lord she could only presume was Lord of the Eastern Lands. She couldn't quite make out the female standing beside him, but Sae knew that from her glittering figure it was most likely his daughter. And the girl Lord Sesshomaru was considering making his wife.
She had been so caught up with Lord Inoue and then Lord Sesshomaru that she had completely forgotten about the conversation she had overheard earlier.
He was planning to marry.
But how could he so easily embrace her like he did then turn around and casually introduce himself to the woman he considered taking as his bride?
Perhaps Sae was just as naïve as he said she was. To think that men regarded kisses or embraces as something only shared between one man and one woman.
"I really wish ..." Sae let her sentence fall, unsure what she really wanted to wish for.
To wish she had never set eyes on Lord Sesshomaru?
Or wish ... for something else?
