Chapter 23: Unlikely Rescuer
She found herself walking down a path. A winding trail she knew all too well. She wasn't sure why but the gravel that crunched under her feet sounded so familiar to her ears. Everywhere she looked around was open, clear, and filled with rippling grass. The green hills ahead appearing like small mounds in the distance. And just in the horizon was a lake, where the water glistened.
To the left was a small hut, where a small camp fire was slowing beginning to take life.
She smiled, knowing that supper would soon be served. The delicious smells filled her nostrils as a breeze gently blew right past her. Her favorite. The delicious soup filled with vegetables and her favorite meat.
Today's catch must have been good for papa and her brother.
"Sae!"
She turned towards the voice and saw her mother, waving her arms as she beckoned.
"Sae, come help with supper," her mother said, standing just outside the doorway to the small hut.
"Coming!" She said automatically, as if she's said the same thing a million times before.
With that, she quickly made her way towards her home. The wind picked up her hair as she flew across the grass and down the small hill.
Her heart filled with joy, she raced towards the warmth and comfort that was her family.
Until all at once the warmth was gone and coldness seeped in.
The closer and closer she got the clearer the hellish nightmare became.
Before she could reach the one place she had ever felt safe and happy, she was met with a blaze of fire and destruction. The home she had grew up in was engulfed with roaring flames and splintering into nothing but black ashes. Her eyes filled with tears as she watched the frightening inferno consume all that she held dear.
"No," she whispered, watching helplessly. "No!"
"Sae."
She whirled around, started by the sound.
Youhei stood, beaten and bruised. His held out his hands towards her, staggering as he tried to keep his weak body upright. "Help me," his hoarse voice rasped.
"B-brother," She stammered, not understanding. "I-"
"Please," his dark eyes, so similar to hers begged her to understand. "Help me."
She moved towards him, holding out her hand. "Of course brother! I'm here."
"Sae please," his frail body finally gave out and he began to fall to his knees.
"Youhei!" She tried leaping towards him as he fell forward. But just as she was about to grab him, he passed right threw her open arms, like a ghost.
"Help me Sae," his voice echoed around her as darkness began to close in.
"Youhei!" Sae whirled around in circles, scared and panicked. "Where are you!"
"Sae." The weaker his voice grew the more the darkness consumed her.
"Youhei, I'm here!"
"Sae."
Until there was nothing but her and a black abyss.
"Help me."
"Youhei!" Sae yelled, shooting up from bed, her heart beat racing in her chest.
Breathing hard, Sae's groggy eyes rapidly blinked as they adjusted to the morning sunlight shinning through the glass window. As she tried to get her bearings, she subconsciously slipped a hand over her chest, where her heart was thumping rapidly. Sae looked around the room and slowly began to recognize where she was. The small room was one she'd come to know rather well. The side quarters were linked to Rin's, who was likely still sleeping soundly in her small bed.
Taking in a deep breath, Sae then slowly shifted in her bed and extended her arms up into the air. She stretched and with a long exhale, she slumped back into her pillow.
It had been a dream.
Just a dream.
But why had it felt so real? Why could she still feel her rapid heart beat in her chest and her emotions storming in turmoil? Why did this strange sense of urgency still consume her? Why had she dreamt of Youhei like that? And her home. Sae hadn't had dreams of their parents for years. The nightmares had stopped long ago. New monsters and fears replaced the horrors that used to keep her up at night as a child.
But what about Youhei? Was her brother in trouble? Or was it just her mind manifesting her daily concerns and worries into a new nightmare about him in danger? Did she want to see him so badly that her dreams were now being taken over by that desire?
Or …
"No," Sae shook her head, unwilling to think about the alternative. Her twin was strong, resourceful, smart, and determined. It would take a lot to bring him down, especially now that he didn't have another person he had to look out for. He was safe and content. Happy. Exactly as she always wanted him to be.
Sae turned to her side, resting her head on the length of her arm.
A nagging sense of doubt twisted in her heart.
But what if he was in some sort of danger? What is he was hurt with no one to help him? What if he was calling out for help in desperate need for a doctor? Perhaps he had fallen ill and he was on his last—
"No," Sae's heart literally twisted in pain. She sat up and forcibly pushed those thoughts out of her mind. She couldn't think like that. It would drive her insane thinking of all the bad things that could happen to her brother. She knew him. He was strong. They had survived their whole childhood because he had made sure they did. If there was anyone she knew who could survive any obstacle that was thrown their way, it would be Youhei. He was okay.
He had to be okay.
Swallowing a knot in her throat, Sae took a deep breath and focused on what was to come. She quickly dressed and headed into Rin's room to get ready.
"Do we really haaaaaave too?" Rin whined, only an hour later.
They had decided to take breakfast upstairs that morning, as they did every so often. It was quieter and more intimate. Away from all the commotion downstairs. Plus, they could eat and talk without worrying about others eavesdropping or adding commentary.
"Yes," Sae repeated, her tone firm. She quickly cleared the dishes and handed them to the kitchen maid before returning to her charge's closet and riffling through her wardrobe.
There was an audible grumble. "But she's going to be there."
With a small mental sigh, Sae grabbed the appropriate dress and carefully carried it to the bed. She laid it down neatly before turning back towards Rin. "Yes, Lady Chō will be joining the outing-"
Groaning, Rin threw herself back into her chair in a dramatic fashion.
"-but so will Lord Inoue and I. You won't be all alone." She finished, shaking her head slightly. She could sympathize with the little girl. The lady in question was easily becoming one of the most privileged and entitled members of nobility that Sae had ever encountered. However, that did not change the fact that Rin -and in extension Sae- was still obligated to entertain said lady and her party. "It'll be a pleasant outing."
"You said that the last three times," Rin very shrewdly pointed out.
Sae fought the urge to cringe and half-smiled instead. "And it wasn't all bad, right? I recall you laughing and enjoying yourself a few times, no? We cannot focus on the bad all the time. Sometimes, we should just focus on the good."
The little girl remained in her chair, silent.
Sae waited, fully knowing the thoughts going through her charge's mind.
Finally, a recognizable and resigned sound came out of the young girl's mouth. "I guess it's okay."
Nodding, Sae began the process of dressing Rin into appropriate attire.
In no-time, Sae and Rin were ready and began heading downstairs towards the stables. Today was going to be an afternoon ride through the countryside. Lord Sesshomaru thought it a good idea to show their guests around the grounds, possibly even the village downstream. This was enthusiastically approved by Lord Heishi and put into motion immediately. Lady Chō also voiced her approval whilst her cousin invited himself along, per usual.
Sae, on the other hand, was not so sure about it. Unlike the rest of the nobility in the house, Sae never had proper instruction on riding horses. She's grown up walking to places she needed to go. Horses were just the beasts that pulled the wagon full of supplies or the carriage with people. But to ride them? With nothing but a leather saddle to separate herself from the 1000 pound animal?
Anxiety spiking, Sae felt sweat begin forming at the base of her neck.
"There you are!" A friendly voice greeted as Rin and her caretaker approached the wooden stables.
When Sae looked up she was met with the usual blue eyes and flashing dimples. His warm greetings never wavered. He always appeared so genuinely happy to see them. It seemed so candid and real that, she wouldn't lie, was beginning to chip at her walls a little bit.
"Lord Inoue!" Rin let go of Sae's hand and ran excitedly towards the young lord. The two had built a budding friendship that seemed to be growing stronger day by day. The little girl couldn't help but be swept away by the handsome and kind lord. He did nothing but express interest, patience, and sincere amusement around Rin.
And in-turn, she seemed to worship at his feet.
"Slow down Rin," Sae cautioned, both literally and figuratively. She was coming to like Lord Inoue's company but that didn't mean she was completely convinced that he was as perfect as he seemed to be. "You don't want to fall and ruin your dress."
"She is quite right, sweetheart," Lord Inoue grinned, holding his hand out for her to catch. "Listen to your wise caretaker."
Face bright, the little girl slowed down -just a tad- before lifting her own small hand and placing it in the lord's. "Yes of course, Lord Inoue."
Sae rolled her eyes, if only Rin showed her such blind obedience. It was a trial every morning just to get the kid out of bed. Let alone to get her fed, groomed, and dressed for the day. The child could be as stubborn as she was young.
Yet, a handsome lord plus sweet compliments seemed to equal a compliant Rin.
"I've told you before," he effortlessly guided her arm around his elbow and intertwined their arms. "Call me Nao."
Giggling, Rin smiled brightly up at him. "Thank you ... Nao." A high blush touched her cheeks.
"That's more like it!"
Ignoring them, Sae walked past the duo and straight into the large stable barn. Almost immediately the smell of hay and other potent smells filled her nostrils. The airy snorts from the horses and the sounds of their hooves hitting the ground echoed around her. The earth beneath her feet was soft and pliable, the soil a soft padding under her shoe. She looked around the well-kept area, with its high wooden stalls, metal bars, huge rows of horses peeping out, and felt her tummy give an unpleasant turn. Perhaps she could claim an upset stomach? Or a sudden case of chest pain?
Because there was no way she going to be able to—
"Aren't you excited Sae?" Asked Rin happily, oblivious to her caretaker's unease.
Clearing her thick throat, Sae attempted a smile and decided to just nod.
"Lor- I mean Nao said he'll ride right by us the whole time!" Her charge continued bubbly. "So he can get our opinion of the countryside."
"That's great," Sae's attempt at enthusiasm was unconvincing, even to her ears. But she hoped the other two wouldn't catch wind of it. She really didn't need an interrogation about her apprehension. She was anxious enough as it was.
"Which horse is yours?" Lord Inoue asked Rin, looking around the stable with curiosity.
"Over here," Rin pulled him by the arm towards the left, all the way down to the end, to a secluded place away from the other more lively horses. "This is Kuri. She was my first horse."
Trailing a few steps behind, Sae watched as Lord Inoue peeked over the wooden gate. "She's looks so peaceful," he finally said, leaning back on the balls of his feet. "How old is she?"
"17," Rin said solemnly, losing a little bit of her usual cheerfulness. She let go of his arm and leaned over the door, her small hands reaching for the horses grand mane. Her small slim fingers stroked the soft strands with affectionate familiarity. A faint knicker answered the gesture.
Understanding right away, Lord Inoue looked in Sae's direction. The question clear in his eyes.
Sae nodded back, answering his silent inquiry. It was rare for horses to live past a certain age. Sadly, Kuri was fast approaching that age.
"Will Kuri be joining us on our outing today?" He turned back towards Rin, smiling down at her kindly.
Rin looked over at Sae. "I don't think so, right Sae? Lord Sesshomaru would likely not want to have her slow down the afternoon."
Sae chewed at her bottom lip, an idea clicking in her head. "I'm not sure Rin, perhaps we could mention it? Kuri would actually be a perfect match for me. Her steady walk is definitely more my pace."
Lord Inoue's blue curious eyes looked over at her. "Your pace?"
Sae tried very hard not to flush in embarrassment. "Yes," she tilted her chin up slightly. "My pace. Fast and furious is not something I enjoy. I am more of a slow and steady type of female."
A corner of the young lord's lips titled upward. "I see."
Disliking his tone, Sae narrowed her eyes at him. "Yes, well, I don't see why there would be anything wrong with that."
He gave an innocent shrug. "Me neither."
"Okay," Sae did not buy his blasé attitude. "Fine."
"Fine," he returned easily.
Sae's nerve twitched. "Good."
"Very good."
"Right."
"Of course."
"Stop it."
An amused dimpled smile. "Stop what?"
Sae scowled. "Whatever it is that you're doing."
"Agreeing with you?" Amusement coated his voice.
"Ye- No- I mean," she stumbled, slightly flustered. What was happening? "J-just quit it."
His hands came up in surrender, "Whatever you say."
Ignoring his glinting blue eyes, Sae turned her attention back to her charge. "Rin shall we say hi to Mr. Wakazono before everyone else arrives?"
"Yes!" Rin's beaming smile retuned ten-fold. "He promised he'd help me with Momo last time."
Sae held out her hand. "Yes he did, let's remind him shall we?"
Rin happily slid her hand in place but before taking another step she turned back towards Lord Inoue. "You'll come with us, right N-nao?"
To Sae's exasperation, the charming lord agreed and followed suit.
It didn't take long for the rest of the party to arrive. By the time they found the old drunk in the back, enough time had passed for the extra footmen and stable boys to file into the stables. All of them ready for Lord Sesshomaru and his noble guests to make their appearance. Mr. Wakazono was in the middle of explaining his war stories between himself and the demon chicken to Lord Inoue when Lord Heishi and Lady Chō drifted into the stables.
"There you are my boy!" Lord Heishi boomed, catching sight of Lord Inoue. "We have been wondering where'd you gone."
Lord Inoue stepped away from his current party and walked towards his relatives. "I was curious about Lord Sesshomaru's horses," he explained to his uncle, in a casual tone. "Wanted to see for myself what we were dealing with."
"Quite right my boy," his uncle nodded in approval. "Quite right. Nothing wrong with that."
Lord Inoue went up to his cousin and kissed each side of her smooth cheeks. "You look lovely today cousin," he acknowledged.
"Thank you Nao," Lady Chō returned, pulling back from their greeting. "I'm glad the jacket suited the rest of your attire. Papa was not sure it would suit your tastes."
"It's perfect," Lord Inoue rolled his shoulders, demonstrating his comfort in the clothing. "If I hadn't known any better I would have thought it was made for me."
"Excellent," the beautiful lady returned, her small smile radiating poise. "Just what I wanted to hear."
"Is that the snooty chit everyone's been whispering about?" Demanded Mr. Wakazono, still standing a few feet away where Sae and Rin stayed back.
"Ssshhhh," Sae hushed him, hoping his voice didn't carry to where the others stood. The less confrontation she had with the noble lady the better. The headache was just not worth it.
"Who are you telling to hush girl" Mr. Wakazono puffed up, his voice slowly escalating. "I know what is what around here!"
"Please Mr. Wakazono-" Sae began, placing her hand on his shoulder. "I mean no disrespect but they are the lord's guests and we must be civil."
The old man stopped before looking at Sae. His usually glazed eyes looked particularly clear in that moment. "Alright," he acquiesced, stepping back. "I'll keep to myself."
Sae's shoulders relaxed. "Thank you-"
"But don't forget they are creatures of the same world as you and I. At the end of the day, we all end up buried 6 feet under," he said cryptically before picking up his shovel and getting back to work.
"I see you are not alone cousin," Lady Chō's sharp eyes missed nothing, her scrutinizing gaze landing on the other two females. "You have company."
Sae and Rin stood by the back of the stables, hand in hand. She could deal with the lady's passive aggressive comments towards herself. But Rin was just a young girl, she shouldn't have to defend herself against an older and entitled noblewoman. "Actually, he kept us company. Lord Inoue has a way of … including himself on our outings when not originally invited."
The young lord just shrugged, shameless. "What can I say?" A grin spread across his face. "You two are lovely company to keep."
Lady Chō, however, didn't appreciate the exchange. "You are too kind Nao," she said, picking a piece of invisible lint off her dress. "To flatter the help like that. You have always had such a big heart for the less fortunate."
Sae felt a small fire spark in her belly. This noblewoman could be so condescending. It was impossible not to get irritated. But she knew that she had to keep her temper in check. It would be pointless getting riled up. Sae would be the one Lord Sesshomaru would blame. Not the vexing woman trying to get a rise out of her.
Exhaling a deep breath, Sae purposely ignored the comment and turned towards her charge. "Rin, shall we get you mounted on your horse? I'm sure Kaito would love to help you up," she gestured towards one of the stable boy's. He was always so eager to please and thus ready for any task. "Isn't that right, K?"
As expected, his eyes lit up and he enthusiastically came forward. Despite being one of the smaller stable hands, he had no issues grabbing one of the big leather saddles, heaving it over his narrow shoulders, and taking it towards one of the stalls. "I'll be right back with your horse Lady Rin!" He said over his shoulder, his face red from exertion.
Sae chuckled lightly. She found his eagerness to please very endearing. Almost like a puppy.
"Aren't you going to get ready too Sae?" Rin asked, her eyebrows rising inquiringly.
"Yes of course," Sae waved it away airily. "After you are all situated I'll get one of the others to help me."
"But won't-"
"No no it's fine," Sae cut her off. "Lets get your boots secure and prepare you for the ride."
Rin didn't argue and allowed her caretaker to fuss about her wardrobe. The bustle around them began as Lord Heishi, Lady Chō, and Lord Inoue were also brought their horses and assisted on mounting. All three guest were given the cream of the crop, the lord's best trained and beautiful horses. One was the color of caramel while the other two were the color of brown sugar, their coats shiny and smooth.
"Up you go," Kaito said, hauling up Rin by her tiny waist. "Just swing ur leg over- Yep! Just like that! Great job Lady Rin."
Sae smiled up at the little girl, enjoying the look of excitement that radiated on her face. Rin really enjoyed horseback riding. The activity was something she constantly begged to do. But she didn't get much of a chance to do so. Mainly because Lord Sesshomaru made it clear that his ward was not permitted to go horseback riding unattended. And since Sae avoided going near the stables like it was infected by a deathly plague, Rin had no real opportunity to go.
So this was a pleasant turn of events for Rin.
"Now Kaito, help Sae." Rin said, up on the horse and ready to go.
Sae snapped out of her thoughts. "O-oh right!" She said nervously. "I mean, It's doesn't have to be right right this minute. I'm sure we still have time before Lord Sesshomaru-"
"Lord Sesshomaru!" Rin greeted happily, smiling from ear to ear.
Sae stopped, sighing. So much for stalling.
"Hello Rin," came a cool greeting. "I'm pleased to find you ready for our outing."
"I am," Rin said brightly.
"Unlike your caretaker, I see," his voice was disapproving.
Tense, Sae turned around. Her eyes were immediately captured by his golden ones. "I was merely assisting Rin," she lied, hoping to sound convincing.
An eyebrow rose. "Is that not what the stable men are for?"
"Yes but-"
"I asked for her help!" Rin broke in abruptly, covering for her.
Sae shot her a grateful look, knowing that the lord took his ward's wishes with the highest esteem. What she wanted was what she would got.
Lord Sesshomaru stared at Sae for a beat before speaking. "I see," his face remained neutral. "As Rin is ready now it is your turn to mount your horse."
"Um," Sae cleared her throat awkwardly, as he began to move past her. "M-my lord?"
His intense gaze once again tuned back to her. "What is it?"
"I-I was wondering," she swallowed, hoping he'd give her the response she wanted. "I was hoping- rather I mean I was thinking that it w-would be better if I ... um ... if I could-"
"Out with it." There was a hint of impatience.
Sae inhaled. "If I could ride Kuri on our outing today," she scrambled out quickly.
There was a heartbeat of no response. Then two. Sae held her breath the entire time. Really hoping that he'd give her this. He wasn't aware of her unease about riding horseback but surely it wouldn't be that big a deal if she rode an older slower horse, right? If anything it would be good. She'd be trailing behind them where she wouldn't interfere or disturb anyone.
"No," he finally answered and turned towards the other guests.
She couldn't control her protest. "B-but-!"
He stopped before looking over his shoulder, his long silver hair covering half his face. "You either ride the mare I choose for you this afternoon or you ride with me," his tone was final. "Is it your choice."
Sae's shoulders slumped, defeated. "I'll ride my own horse," she muttered.
"Very well." He said and continued his walk toward his guests.
Mentally cursing, Sae reluctantly made her way towards the horse she knew was waiting for her. Damn Lord Sesshomaru for knowing her weaknesses. Of course he knew the last thing she wanted right now was to be in close proximity of him. She'd made that very clear the last few weeks when she did everything in her power not to be caught alone with him.
So of course he knew she'd pick any other alternative over riding with him.
"Sae," Lord Inoue greeted amiably, from up where he sat on his horse. "I had been wondering when you'd rejoin us."
Sae returned a weak smile. "I was helping Rin. But now it's my turn, I guess."
As she was speaking, one of the older stable boys was already leading a horse towards her, saddle and reins ready to go.
"Can we be on our way?" Lady Chō's asked, sitting on her own mare properly. "How much longer must we wait on the help?"
"Patience, my dear," Lord Heishi advised, in good nature. "We'll be along shortly, isn't that right Lord Sesshomaru?"
The tall silver haired demon mounted easily and without assistance. He looked much bigger on top of his sleek black horse. Powerful even. "Indeed," he returned.
Sae avoided eye contact but she could feel his intense gaze burning a whole in her back. "You can do this," she said in a low tone, speaking to herself. "It'll be fine. You've dealt with scarier things before. This will be a breeze."
The mare snorted, a loud and breathy sound.
Sae shrunk back a little, her gaze looking up towards the huge animal. How was she expected to ride such an enormous creature? It towered over her petite stature by at least 8 feet! Her face barely reached the horse's mid-section. How on earth was—
"Is there a problem female?" Lord Sesshomaru asked, clearly displeased.
"No!" Sae refused to look in their direction, knowing that if she did she'd lose whatever nerve she had left. She didn't need to see his fierce gaze right now. Or Lady Chō's haughty glare. Or even Lord Inoue's gentle ones. She just needed to focus on getting past her trepidation. "I'm fine."
A hand suddenly appeared in front of her. Sae looked up to see the stable boy. His half-smile was encouraging.
I can do this.
Taking a deep breath, Sae placed her hand in his and allowed herself to be led up the wooden stool. Leveled with the horse, Sae pulled up her skirt, placed one foot inside the stirrup, and lifted her other leg. With the stable boy holding the reins, Sae hopped and swung her leg over the horse. The mare trotted over to the side a step, but adjusted to her rider's weight easily. The stable boy then handed up the reins and stepped back.
Gripping the leather reins with all her might, Sae sat in a tense position.
"Now with that settled," Lady Chō chiming voice carried over the noise. "Where are we headed to first my lord?"
Lord Sesshomaru led his horse up to the front of the stables, eloquently synchronizing his movement to the horses trot. "The hills to the west. The river provides the most scenic route."
The lady's smile was charming. "That sounds wonderful."
Lord Sesshomaru gave a small nod in her direction. "Follow me."
With that, the whole party pulled at their reins and led their horses after him.
All except one.
Sae's knuckles were white as she squeezed her hands tighter around her reins. The sound of hooves hitting the ground filled her ears. She looked down and felt herself getting higher and higher. This was not safe. She could feel the flexing muscles of the gigantic creature underneath her legs. She was expected to control this animal?
"Hey … uh … horse," She began licking her dry lips. "Can we make a deal?"
The mare gave a low-pitched neigh, as if understanding her.
Sae continued. "If I promise not to be too much of a bother would you mind taking it easy on me? I'm not really used to this whole riding thing, so …"
When there was no response, Sae leaned down and talked closer to her ear. "Come on, I'm not asking much. Just don't walk too fast or jump or anything like that. That's all. I promise I'll bring you back like … umm … an apple?"
The mare threw her head back and let out a light whinny.
Sae held fast, feeling the movement under her thighs. "Okay okay, I'll bring you a lot of apples but this is what I mean by going easy!" Sae's voice reached a high-pitch sound. "Don't move around so much!"
"Sae!" A voice called out. "Are you alright?"
Sae looked up to see Lord Inoue staring back at her. He sat on his horse, half-turned, trailing behind the rest of the moving party. "Aren't you coming?"
"Coming!" She called back, bracing herself. "Alright you beast, we made a deal. You break it and there will be no apples, is that understood?"
A breathy snort was her response.
"I'll take that as a yes," Sae took another deep breath before tugging at the reins. Luckily, the horse began a small trollop, catching up with the rest of the guest's in a slow and steady pace.
"Having horse trouble?" Lord Inoue asked, once she reached his side at the back.
Sae laughed nervously. "Yeah, you can say something like that."
"Don't worry," Lord Inoue said, reassuring. "Lord Sesshomaru was just informing us that this will be a relatively smooth and leisurely ride."
I hope so.
Lord Sesshomaru led in the front, with Lady Chō to his right and Rin to his left. Lord Heishi rode a few paces behind them, his round body bouncing rather heftily on his horse. Lord Inoue brought up the rear, with Sae lingering a pace behind him. Two footmen rode a few feet away, carrying a small wagon full of supplies for lunch.
Promptly, everyone else began with small conversation, remarking on the beauty of nature here or the curiosity of some animal there. But Sae remained quiet, concentrating on not moving around too much, keeping her thighs clenched tight, and minding her grip on the reins.
"How are you doing back there?" Lord Inoue asked, the moment after he stopped talking with his uncle.
Sae tore her gaze away from a spot on the back of the horse's head. "What?" She hadn't caught his question.
A side smiled curled the lord's lips. "Why do I get the impression you aren't accustomed to riding horseback?"
Sae's shoulder automatically straightened. "I-I am," she lied. "It's just been awhile, that's all."
"Mhmm," his smirk grew. "You sure about that? Your form says otherwise."
Sae tried her hardest to relax her muscles, to appear more comfortable. But every time the mare trotted a bit too much, her body just tensed up all over again. "Alright," she muttered, disgruntled. "I've never ridden horseback before. But I'm fine."
Amusement shined in the lord's sky-colored eyes. "I can see that. Considering this is your first time you are actually doing remarkably well."
Sae shot him a sideways glance. "Really?"
"Oh yes," he nodded. "Much better than I ever did, that's for sure."
Her head tilted a little to the side. "How old were you when you first rode?"
"5," he said matter-of-factly.
Sae snorted. "That's not much of a comparison is it? I'm fully grown, you were just a child."
"Oh but you see," he continued cheerfully. "You will never make the same mistake I made on my first ride."
"And what's that?"
"Hit your head on a tree branch and get knocked off your horse." He said in a deadpan voice.
Sae laughed.
"Don't make fun," he feigned indignation. "I had a knot on my head for days!"
"You didn't," she was able to get out between chortles.
He nodded sadly. "It's true. I have yet to live it down."
Calming down, Sae was left grinning. "Well I do hope this first riding experienced isn't as … lively as yours."
"I'll make sure to look out for low branches," he returned solemnly.
Sae chuckled. "I appreciate that."
By the time the group made it to their first stop, Sae realized that her conversation with the young lord had helped her relax. To a point where she was actually able to tear her eyes away from the humongous creature and enjoy the scenery. The hills were covered in dark green grass, spreading far into the bright horizon. The tall trees swayed in the breeze, like a dance to a tranquil song. The water from the river gently flowed down stream, glistening in the sunlight.
It really was a wonderful sight.
"Did you hear that?" Bellowed Lord Heishi from a few feet away.
"What was that uncle?" Lord Inoue called back, looking ahead.
"The ladies are each feeling a bit fatigued! We think it best to stop and have luncheon."
"Alright," Lord Inoue nodded, snapping slightly at his reins. "Come Sae," He turned towards her. "We should catch up before my uncle eats all the dry pork."
Nodding, Sae carefully and slowly snapped at her reins, hoping the horse didn't pick up TOO much speed.
Thankfully, the mare kept her promise and took it easy with the pace.
She didn't catch up as quickly as Lord Inoue but she did arrive before the footmen had the picnic all set up. Everyone else was already off their prospective horses, doing small stretches to relax their stiff limbs. Rin was adorably stretching her arms up and down, her small face deep in concentration.
Chuckling, Sae pulled at the reins, singling the horse to stop. "So far so good horse," she patted the mare on the side of her thick neck. "If you keep this up, I'll bring you one full bag of apples everyday."
The mare neighed, as if in agreement.
Sae smiled, her feelings about these ginormous beasts softening.
But just a little. They still had the rest of the afternoon to get through.
"Would you like some assistance?" Lord Inoue's dimples were deep as he looked up at her from the ground.
Nodding, Sae handed him the reins before reaching her hands towards him—
"Lord Inoue," interrupted Lord Sesshomaru's cold voice.
His smile becoming strained, the young lord turned toward the other nobleman. "Yes?" He said, his tone piqued.
"Your uncle requests your assistance," Lord Sesshomaru's features remained chilly. "I suggest you stick by your relatives and let me handle my household as I see fit."
"Very well," Lord Inoue handed the reins over, gave a small rigid bow, and stalked towards the others.
Sae watched him walk away with a sense of panic. She hadn't thought twice about jumping down into the young lord's arm for assistance. But this meant—
"Why do you just sit there?" His deep timbre rose the hairs on the back of her neck. "We do not have all day."
Sae looked down at his handsome face, his features revealing nothing as usual. This was a point of view in which she never had the luxury of seeing him. His long hair fell away from his face, his deep gaze seemed softened somehow, as the sunlight kissed his naturally flawless skin in a way that made him appear ethereal.
"Are you going to make me repeat myself?" He asked coolly.
"Oh," Sae shook her head, catching herself. Stupid. Stupid. Stupid. These thoughts were a dangerous route to go down. "Right."
Sae reached down and placed each of her hands on his broad shoulders. She felt his long fingers slip around either side of her waist and squeeze. She held her breath as she slid down from her horse and into his arms. Every nerve in her body ignited as he slowly slid her soft warm body down his broader masculine length. Under her fingertips she felt his muscles flex and shift as he easily carried her to the ground.
Feeling overly warm, Sae was grateful when her feet finally touched the ground. "Thank you," she mumbled quickly, pushing away.
But the lord's fingers tightened around her narrow waist. He held her still, her curves nestled into his towering frame.
Sae immediately looked up, meeting his gaze. Their faces were only inches apart.
His golden eyes smoldered. "You seem to be getting a lot of attention from our guest."
"Not true," Sae got defensive. "He enjoys Rin's company. I just happen to tag along. Per your orders, my lord."
"Do not test my patience female," He warned, his eyes glinting.
Sae felt him shift, suddenly very aware that only a couple layer of clothes separated their bodies. "Fine I won't," she said, pushing at his chest. She needed to create space between herself and this demon lord. Something deep within her was reacting to his closeness. And it needed to stop. "Now l'll go attend to Rin—"
"No," he pulled her in closer, crowding her with his body. "I am not done talking."
Feeling cornered and trapped, she looked directly up into his eyes. "Don't," she said, her tone a warning. He couldn't keep doing this. She knew it was all just a power game to him. A way he could prove his dominance over her. But she wasn't willing to play anymore. Her emotions were too jumbled up from it. They couldn't be trusted around him. She needed space.
His eyes searched her face, as if seeing something for the first time. Whatever he saw there made his grip finally loosen and slowly set her away. "We shall discuss this at another time," he acquiesced, an underlying warning in his own voice.
"Fine," she returned, grateful to finally be able to breathe. She was slightly surprised he let her go without some type of reprimand. He always asserted his authority on servants that questioned him. Especially towards her. He made it clear she was in no position to make requests or demands.
Never stopped her before though, she could now admit. She acknowledge her slight problem with authority. She couldn't help it. It was in her nature. But this was one of the first times he actually gave in without some type of warning or threat.
Was he possibly—
"There you are," Lady Chō's voice carried towards them. "I had wondered where you'd gone too." Her slim figure swayed elegantly as she made her way up to Lord Sesshomaru. He respectably offered her his arm and she took it , her hands covered in white satin gloves.
Sae looked between the two, a small pang twisting in her chest. They looked like the perfect noble couple. He stood tall, proud, and cool. By his side she was graceful, lovely, and poised.
This is exactly what was expected of the woman Lord Sesshomaru was to marry. This was why they were here, after all. She'd do well to remember that.
"Are you having trouble with your ward's caretaker?" The lady asked, light catching on her strawberry colored hair. Although her appearance looked angelic, her tone and eyes spoke of a more wicked attitude underneath. "She does seem to cause a lot of trouble for someone of her low station."
Sae's hands curled into balls. What she wouldn't give to—
"Nothing I cannot handle," Lord Sesshomaru said chillingly. He had made his opinion very clear about how he felt when it came to talking about the help. It was not acceptable in his presence. His household servants were not up for discussion.
Remembering herself, Lady Chō immediately changed tactics. "Of course my lord," she gave a dignified nod. "I have nothing but respect for how well you run your home and lands. My father has spoken highly of the success that your people have prospered under your rule."
"Something I'm sure you're familiar with," Lord Sesshomaru said, on a more civil note. He had no problem forgiving the noblewoman for her misstep. It was only a small oversight. They had the rest of the afternoon to get on with. "Let us continue this conversation with your father."
The lady's smile was stunning. "I would love that, my lord."
As they were turning to leave, Sae caught the heated glare Lady Chō shot her way.
Sae rolled her eyes.
Right back at you lady.
"Make sure Rin eats all her vegetables," Lord Sesshomaru threw over his shoulder, as they disappeared around the corner.
Sae inhaled a deep breath. This was going to be a long afternoon.
The picnic lunch was only a little awkward. Sae sat next to Rin, which was just a little aways from the other four. Lord Heishi and his daughter sat with Lord Sesshomaru while Lord Inoue took a seat next to his cousin. But once the food was served and small conversations were at their peak, the young lord was able to move away from their group without much notice. He stealthy made a spot for himself between the elated Rin and her amused caretaker.
"Hello," Sae greeted, meeting his dancing blue eyes. "That was quite a feat you just pulled."
He shrugged, a grin on his face. "What can I say? I'm as sly as they come."
"I bet," Sae took another bite of her sliced pear, savoring the fresh sweet juices that filled her mouth.
"You'd much rather be with us," Rin stated in her youthful innocence. "Right Nao?"
"Of course!" He replied, grabbing a peach and biting into it. "You two are much better company than the stuffy adults over there talking about land, profit, and all the boring talk about the people's well-being. All I hear is blah blah blah, blah blah, blah blah blah."
Sae peered over at him. "You don't think the lord's of these lands should be concerned about the people they rule and their prosperity?"
Lord Inoue caught the skepticism in her voice. "Of course I do," he began cautiously. "I just don't think it's all that proper for an afternoon meant for our enjoyment, that's all."
Sae let up. "Yes, I suppose that's true."
Rin agreed. "We should be enjoying the fresh air!" She got up and spread her arms out like a bird. Before proceeding to "fly" around her other two companions and flapping her tiny arms up and down. All the time giggling with merriment.
"Rin," Sae chuckled, happy to see her charge so innocently and openly enjoying herself. "Settle down and finish your meal. You have to finish all your vegetables this time, remember?"
Rin plopped herself down cheerfully, having no issue with eating the rest of her lunch. "This is fun," she said between nibbles, leaning her back against Sae's chest.
Sae looked down and smoothed the little girl's hair back. "It is."
Lord Inoue laid himself casually on his side with his legs stretched out on the grass. "I concur with Rin." He placed his head on his bent arm, his palm supporting the side of his face. "We do have the most fun with just the three of us."
Sae considered him a moment. "Do you really? Why do you think that is?"
He opened his mouth—
"And don't say it is because we are such lovely company," Sae cautioned, cutting off his response. "I don't believe a word of it."
"Well damn," he said under his breath, jokingly.
Sae fought a smile.
"You really want to know why?" Lord Inoue's mood was suddenly serious. "I honestly think it's because we are just being ourselves. No pretenses, no façades. We are who we are."
"Are you?" Sae couldn't help but ask, once again wondering if this was truly who Lord Inoue was.
"Of course," he returned easily, unaware of the severity of his companion's question. "Aren't you?"
Sae grimaced at that. "Unfortunately yes," she said. She wasn't cunning or shrewd enough to be anything but herself.
"See that's why I prefer this company. Unlike those stiffs." He threw a thumb over his shoulder, indicating the others.
Curiosity peaked Sae's interest. "What do you mean? Is this not how Lady Chō behaves on a normal bases? She seems like a proper and well-bred noblewoman."
Lord Inoue rolled his eyes. "Of course not," He responded casually. "My dear cousin knows what her role is and plays is to perfection. Lord Sesshomaru won't know who he's truly married to until it is too late to do anything about it." A chortle. "As it should be in any noble marriage."
"I see," Sae frowned. "So it is a custom in the nobility to pretend to be someone you are not in order to trick someone else into believing that is who you are even if that is not who they end up marrying?"
Lord Inoue gave a confused smile. "Essentially."
"Then how do you know…" Sae trailed off, unable to keep her eyes from glancing back at Lord Sesshomaru and Lady Chō. "Never mind."
Lord Inoue's eyebrow rose. "How do you know what?"
"Nothing," she waved it away. "It was a silly question."
"But-"
"Anyway," Sae looked down at her charge to check on her progress. "I see you finished almost everything Rin, very good."
Rin smiled sheepishly. "I tried to eat the small green ones but I just couldn't finish it all."
"What do you mean Lady Rin?" Lord Inoue said in mock surprise. "I don't see a single drop of food left on your plate. In fact-" He picked up her small dish and chucked the remnants over his shoulder with flourish, "I'd go so far as to declare you wiped it clean!"
Rin giggled.
Sae rolled her eyes but smiled. She didn't see anything wrong with letting this slide. As long as the lord believed his ward to have eaten all her vegetables then there was no harm done.
It was very soon after that when everything was gathered up so they could be on their way. The accompanying servants were sent back to the castle since their services were no longer needed. While the rest of the party was left to continue sightseeing.
"Let me assist you Sae," Lord Inoue popped up behind her, as everyone else was getting settled back up onto their horses.
Sae glanced over to where Lord Sesshomaru was helping Lady Chō onto her mare before looking back at her blue-eyed companion. "Alright," she acquiesced. "But if I accidentally kick you on my way up I don't want to hear any complaints."
He chuckled. "Consider me warned."
Nodding, Sae turned back to her horse. She reached for the horn of the saddle with one hand and the reins with the other.
"Ready?" Lord Inoue said, his breath touching the back of her neck.
"Yeah," she replied, bracing herself.
With that, Lord Inoue grabbed her around the waist and lifted her.
Quickly, she slipped one foot back into the stirrup and threw her other leg over the mare's back. The slight shifting of weight underneath her thighs felt a little more natural this time. She could feel herself adjust to the movement a little better than when she first straddled the creature.
"You are getting the hang of this," the young lord observed, grinning from his place below her.
Sae looked down with a rather accomplished smile. "I think I am."
"I'm sure it seems like an accomplishment for someone in her position," came a cool remark.
Sae's couldn't help but shoot a subtle side-eye to the haughty noblewoman.
"Let us continue," was Lord Sesshomaru's order, a definitive sharpness in his tone.
A satisfied smirk spread on Lord Inoue's face. He gave a small bow to Sae before trodding over to his own horse, a small pep in his step.
Their smaller group was soon underway, the kick of dust trailing behind them. They continued up grassy hills that overlooked a shimmering lake. The sun was beginning to descend from its highest peak, tinting the sky in an orange and purple hue.
At the head of their company, Lord Sesshomaru slowed his horse's gate and addressed the eastern lord.
"This is going to be a rocky terrain," Lord Heishi then warned, looking over his shoulder at his daughter. "Have care my dear."
"Of course father," returned the Lady Chō, looking at ease.
Lord Inoue's face suddenly grew impish. "It'll take more than that to knock my lovely cousin off her stride."
The lady, in turn, shot him a withering look. "I do not know what you mean Nao," she said, her tone lofty.
"Ah-huh," his smirk grew.
Lady Chō snapped something back.
Sae payed them little attention, although there was a small part of her that was curious about their exchange. Instead, her mind was in a panic. She kept focusing on the fact that the trail was going to get tougher and less manageable. She's done alright so far, because her and her horse had been taking it easy and slow.
But with the terrain changing, she'd have to use skills she didn't posses and rely on experience that she had yet to obtain. Which did not bode well for her at all.
"Stay close to me Rin," she heard Lord Sesshomaru say.
"Yes Lord Sesshomaru," was her happy response.
Sae swallowed, her anxiety rearing its ugly head. If Lord Sesshomaru was concerned about his ward's safety, knowing full well that she was a trained and skilled rider, then that indicated their journey was about to get dangerously treacherous and unpredictable.
Their arrival at the top of the hill a few paces later revealed Sae's worst fears. Looking down from the high peak, she could see the rocky and rugged slope below. The winding path leading down was narrow, steep, and uneven. Jagged rocks paved the ground from all angles. Hardly any grass was visible between the patches of dry dirt and massive gravel.
"Slow and steady," advised Lord Heishi to his daughter.
Who didn't look the least bit apprehensive. "Of course father," she nevertheless responded. "It does look rather precarious, doesn't it?"
"Nothing little Chō hasn't handled already," Lord Inoue chimed in. "Am I right?"
"Nao," the vexed lady said warningly. "If you-"
"Let's be off!" He announced with a chortle, before snapping his reins and galloping forward.
"Mustn't dawdle my dear," her father said, following suit.
Sae watched the noblewoman huff in frustration before she too followed after her family. There was a part of her that wanted to call them back, if only so she could distract herself from the endeavor that lay before her. Perhaps they were not the best company to keep but at least they'd prevent Sae from riding down the terrifying route alone.
"Come on Sae," Rin called back, trailing closely after Lord Sesshomaru. "Don't get left behind!"
Everyone from the group was already lengths ahead of her, each one of them making their way down the pathway one after the other.
Sae took a fortifying breath.
I can do this.
Her fingers clenching tight, she forced her arms to snap the reins and braced herself. Her horse lurched forward, throwing her head back forcefully, and let out a neigh in protest.
"Woah!" Sae cried, pulling on the reins. "Calm down horsey!"
The beast snorted but settled down.
"Listen, I don't want to go either," Sae muttered, feeling her whole body tense up. It was bad enough that she was being forced to go down this seemingly perilous road, but now her mare was also having seconds thoughts. This was the last thing she needed. "But we have to do it or we'll be stuck here. You made me a promise, remember? Apples. For. The. Rest. Of. Your. Life. So let's go."
Once again, she flicked the reins.
This time, the gigantic 1000 pound creature gave a breathy neigh before jolting onward. Sae shifted uneasily on her saddle, clenching her legs as tightly as she could and holding onto the leather harness with all her might.
The horse made small cautious movements, her long powerful legs taking each bumpy step at her own pace. Sae saw no reason to rush her and just tried to keep as still as possible. The path was steep, so Sae had to lean her body back as the mare made her descent at a downward slant. Each stride pitched Sae forcefully up and down on her saddle. She couldn't help but grip the reins tighter and dig her legs deeper into the mare's sides.
"Watch out for that large gap!" Lord Inoue called from the head of the group. His dark hair ruffled in the cool evening wind as he turned in his saddle.
"Good looking out my boy!" His uncle called back, following closely after his daughter.
Sae looked ahead to see Lady Chō and her horse jump over a section hidden from view. Lord Heishi followed with ease right after. Lord Sesshomaru was a few feet behind them, with Rin tight by his side.
Sae was beginning to fall significantly behind. Her party's figures were growing smaller into the distance. Their voices also growing less distinct as they moved deeper down the hill. Even though she enjoyed the cautious pace her horse had been taking so far, she didn't want to be left alone on this road.
With that thought, Sae cracked the reins with more force. "Faster, you. We have to catch up!"
But the already skittish horse grew started by the bite of leather. She gave a long, high pitched squeal, throwing her head, and reared back on her two hind legs.
"No, no, no, no, no," Sae tried pulling the leather reins tighter, to keep the horse from whipping around in freight. "Stop it!"
The yanking only distressed the horse more. She threw her long neck violently from side to side, wrenching away at the reins with her powerful might. Her thick muscular legs kicked back as she grew more and more panicked. The frightened horse let out another loud disturbing squeal that rumbled and ricochetted down the rocky hillside.
"Stop!" Sae cried in panic, desperately gripping onto the horse's restraints.
But it was too late. Before she knew what was happening, the hysterical horse reared back and bolted. Sae didn't even get the chance to scream before they were both racing down the hill. The animal's hooves stampeding down the jagged path with incredible speed and force.
Sae felt her whole body jolting up and down like a rag doll. She tried holding on with everything she had. The world shot past her at what felt like the speed of light. She could barely make out anything over the roaring of the wind whipping against her or the thundering sound of hooves hitting the ground.
Then there was a scream.
A shout.
And a yell.
"Sae!"
Sae caught her name, barely making out the distraught voice of her charge.
"Hold on!" Another voice bellowed, right before an additional set of stampeding hooves joined hers.
A sharp whistle pierced the air before a third set of hooves vibrated the already trembling ground.
The next second, all Sae could hear was her racing heartbeat. Less than a few feet ahead, she could see a sudden drop in the earth which indicated a gap in the path. If the horse jumped at this speed, she could throw Sae clear off her back. Which would leave her flying through the air and crashing into unrelenting stone.
"No," she gasped, realizing her situation. Wether she tried to hang on or risk jumping off, the chances of her coming out unharmed were very slim. In fact, there was a real possibility she wouldn't be okay at all. But if she—
"Grab my hand," Sesshomaru's voice demanded, his figure suddenly appearing to her right. His long hair flowed behind him, his form still steady and strong on top of his racing horse. One of his long arms was extended towards her, as he skillfully maneuvered the animal with the other.
Sae quickly reached one of her hands out, her arm desperately trying to catch onto his. But she was thrashing too chaotically in her saddle that she couldn't properly latch on. "I can't!" She said, distress clear in her voice. The drop was looming closer and she knew time was running out.
Before she had anymore time to think, she felt a strong arm wrap itself around her waist and lift. For a split second, she was weightless. Sae felt nothing but air underneath her feet as she was hefted off her horse and pulled away.
"Hold onto me," Sesshomaru once again instructed, his tone severe. Sae's hands automatically grabbed onto his shirt and held on. He pulled on his horse's reigns, steadily slowing down the animal's gate. The wind began to die down as the charging stead gradually came to a walk.
Until finally everything came to a stop.
Sae let out a much needed breath. Her heart was slowly beginning to beat at a normal rate. Her muscles were at last releasing from their tense state. And her eyes were able to once again make-out the world around her.
First thing she caught sight of was the mare as she continued racing off into the distance.
Next, she turned her head back towards her rescuer and was met with an intense gaze. Just then, she became very aware of her position. Somehow, Lord Sesshomaru had been able to maneuver her onto his lap, her arms clinging onto his shoulder, and her legs hanging over his. She'd only been in this position once before and it felt like a very long time ago.
She cleared her throat, feeling the back of her neck grow warm. "W-well, that was a close one-" she began.
"You could have died." Was his abrupt response, face as hard as marble.
She winced, her emotions still too fresh from the experience. "I know but-"
"What you did was foolish and reckless." He continued, ignoring her.
She sighed. "I-"
"I do not want to hear any of your excuses," His gaze never wavered from hers. "This was completely unacceptable. You should know better than this. Even for someone as hard headed as you this was beyond ridiculous. Something like this is avoidable. If you did not know how to control a horse then you shouldn't have been on one."
"I tried-"
"Do not argue with me female. Are you truly so single-minded that you could not take a moment to disclose this information?"
Her temper flared up at that. "I tried to tell you earlier-"
"Sae!" A voice cried out.
Sae looked past Lord Sesshomaru's shoulders to see the rest of the party ride up, their horses galloping towards them. Rin's was a the very front, her face etched in concern and distress. "Sae!" The little girl cried out again, clearing worried about her caretaker.
In a flash, she was pulling up beside Lord Sesshomaru's horse and leaning over. "Are you okay?" Her youthful voice was shaky as her eyes inspected the older female from top to bottom.
With what she hoped was a believable smile, Sae extended her arm and offered her hand. "I'm alright Rin," she said as reassuringly as possible. She knew she likely still looked shaken up and disheveled but her charge needed the consoling.
Rin took the offered hand and squeezed. "Are you sure?" She asked, her chin quivering ever-so-slightly. "I wasn't sure if Lord Sesshomaru would be able to get to you on time. You were going so fast and-"
"It is alright Rin," Lord Sesshomaru cut in this time, his previously grave tone taking on a lighter mild one. "She is fine. No need to fret."
Nodding, Rin gave her hand one last squeeze before pulling away and leaning back up in her horse. She visibly pulled her emotions together like a proper young lady. Something Sae knew to be very hard to do when feeling overly emotional.
"Good god girl!" Boomed Lord Heishi's voice a beat later, the other three nobles pulling up to join the rest of them. "Did no one ever teach you how to ride a horse!?"
"I think that is rather obvious," Lady Chō answered with irony.
"Are you alright Sae?" Asked Lord Inoue, his features also expressing concern. He led his horse towards Lord Sesshomaru's, riding up to the opposite side of Rin. "That was a dangerous descent from the hill."
"She is fine," Lord Sesshomaru said, cutting Sae off before she could say anything.
Lord Inoue's expression immediately became strained. "I did not think her so distraught that she could not answer for herself," he said pointedly, his eyebrows rising.
Sae opened her mouth—
"That is not your concern," the demon lord replied coldly, shifting Sae on his lap. He took hold of his reins and snapped the horse into action. "We should be on our way. Nightfall shall be upon us soon."
Lord Inoue's eyes narrowed. "Well, seeing as the girl does not have her horse I'd be more than happy to offer my-"
"No."
"Surely she could walk." Lady Chō chimed in, watching the interaction with clear displeasure. "She appears no worse for ware. It was just a small incident, after all."
"She rides with me and that is final," Lord Sesshomaru's tone was definite. "Come Rin."
He nudged the horse with a slight kick and they were off. Rin following quickly after.
They rode in silence for some time. Sae and Lord Sesshomaru leading in the front, Rin following closely behind, and the last three trailing a few lengths away.
Sae shifted, uncomfortable. "I could have walked," she finally mumbled.
For a moment, Lord Sesshomaru said nothing.
Sae waited, knowing full well that he could not go without—
"So you could go waltzing back to Lord Inoue's," his voice was chilly.
"No," Sae's eyebrows scrunched together, giving him a look. "So I don't have to ride on another murderous beast that could throw me off a cliff if he so chooses."
He continued to look forward, but Sae could have sworn that the corner of his eye twitched.
When he said nothing in response, Sae turned to look ahead. The sky was beginning to darken as the sun set into the horizon. Having past the steep and rocky hill, the path that lay in front of them was open and leveled. Not that it really mattered to her. She was more than ready to get off this temperamental and dangerous animal as soon as possible. No matter how smooth the ride was.
This was a harsh lesson she learned all too well. She and horses were just not compatible. In fact, she could say with certainty that she disliked the species all together. She'd given them a shot and they'd just proved one thing: They could only be trusted to pull wagons and carriages. That's it.
"Why did you not say anything."
"What?" Sae looked back at Lord Sesshomaru, breaking out of her thoughts.
He continued to look ahead, but he repeated, "What did you not say anything."
It came out more as a demand than a question. "About what?" She asked cautiously. She was uncertain where he was going with this.
A muscled twitched in his jaw. "About riding a horse," he said, his voice nonetheless even.
"I did," she responded, still wary. Was he just trying to start another one of his lectures? "I asked to ride Kuri but you refused-"
"That is not a valid excuse," He cut her off abruptly, annoyance now coloring his tone. "Asking me to ride an old mare over a younger one is not the same as informing me of your inexperience with horses."
Flushing, Sae refused to admit he was right. "Some people can read between the lines," she sniffed.
"Spare me," he said, finally looking down at her. "Tell me the truth, female. Why did you not say anything."
Sae inhaled sharply, taken aback by his look. His look was daunting. She'd seen plenty of his intense stares before. But this one seemed different somehow. She couldn't put her finger on it but it felt more … intimate. As if he was looking into her being and not simply at her.
Which she didn't like one bit.
"I-" she cleared her throat. "I didn't think it was necessary."
An arrogant brow rose. "You did not think it was necessary to inform me that you were an inexperienced rider for an activity we planned to be on horseback for most of the day?"
Sae could feel her cheeks begin to burn hotter. "Well when you put it like that," she muttered, disgruntled.
"Well?" He pressed.
Sae bit her lip, feeling as if revealing the truth would cause more trouble than it was worth. Why did he have to know anyway? She realized her mistake by riding the damn creature in the first place. She wouldn't do it again. Surely he knew that by now. If her kiss with death wasn't enough to convince him of that, her behavior afterward should have been proof enough.
"I'm losing my patience-"
"Why does it matter anyway?" She burst out, feeling very defensive. "I won't do it again, okay? I learned my lesson. You don't have to bother-"
"Sae."
She stopped abruptly, once again startled to hear her name on his lips. His tone confused her. It was not one that she had heard before. She eyed him for a moment, truly wondering why he wanted this information.
"Because …" she hesitated, suddenly feeling very vulnerable.
He waited.
She exhaled. "Because I did not want you to know a weakness." There. She said it. He could think it was childish. That she'd been irresponsible to keep such details to herself. But she didn't want to give him anymore ammunition to use against her.
"I see," was all he said before once again looking straight ahead.
Sae was left to inspect his features, now that he turned away. For some strange reason, she got the impression that he was displeased by her response. Not in the way she assumed he'd be, which she'd thought would be irritated. But as if her reasoning disturbed him.
"I understand more than most about exposing vulnerabilities," He suddenly said, his voice calm.
Sae's eyebrows rose, but she stayed silent.
"The world we live in is harsh and unforgiving," He continued, his deep timbre vibrating in his chest. "Only the strong prevail. There is no room for the feeble minded. Demons such as I do not yield so much power by showing weakness."
Sae resisted rolling her eyes.
"This frame of thinking I can understand," Lord Sesshomaru said. "However, I want to make this perfectly clear. This shall not happen again."
Sighing, Sae prepared for the lecture. "I know-"
"Understand me," His tone was curt. "You will not put yourself in such a situation again, am I clear? You are human, therefore not indestructible. You are under my rule and therefore it is my duty to look after your well-being."
Confused again, Sae went over his words in her head. It was a warning, of course, but it almost sounded as if he actually cared about her safety. Which was perplexing. For all intent and purposes, he'd made it clear he saw her as nothing more than his property. Did this mean he just didn't want to "lose" something that he thought was his?
"Did you hear me?" He demanded.
Sae's eyes narrowed. "Yes." She wasn't sure what to make of this request. It was too mystifying too understand. Not that she'd really pay it any heed. He already knew too much about her as it was. He didn't need any more to hold over her.
As if reading her mind, his eyes flashed warningly. "I mean it. If I discover that you kept something from me that puts your life at risk again I will-"
"What?" Sae challenged defiantly, growing incensed. His words were bewildering. This did not sound like the demon lord she had encountered all this time. He was sounding almost like a protector. Which made her feel completely thrown off balance. And she didn't like it. "You'll kill me yourself?"
Sesshomaru remained silent this time.
"Or perhaps you'll go after Youhei," she kept going, feeling provoked. After all the ominous warnings and threats, after all the implied consequences and punishment, he wanted to concern himself with her safety now? It made no sense. "That way you can hit me where it really hurts, huh? Since I have so little regard for my life why not go after the one person I hold dear? Heaven forbid I-"
"Enough," he cut in coldly.
"No," Sae struggled against him, pushing him away with what strength she had left. "Let me off. I can walk back on my own. I don't need you to treat me as a child. I can take care of myself like I've done my entire life."
"Woman," there was a sense of exasperation to his voice.
Sae continued to squirm, using her arms to try and lift herself away from her position. But it was no use. His muscled arms just tightened around her body and pulled her closer into his frame. She could hear his steady heartbeat as her face was pressed to his chest and feel the warmth of his body heat radiating off him. Her mind fleetingly wondered again how an emotionless demon such as he could produce such a warm sensation.
"That is enough," Lord Sesshomaru said.
Getting no where against his steely hold, Sae finally exhaled in defeat. Damn his abnormal strength.
"You truly are the most stubborn human," he said, easing his hold once she stopped struggling.
Sae couldn't help but mutter, "Doubtful."
Although he didn't say anything, she sensed that he did not agree. Not that she cared. Him calling her stubborn was like the pot calling the kettle black.
They were one and the same.
