Breakfast the next morning was more than a little awkward. The Pines family and Shack employees were still disturbed by the events of the previous night, while the two witches themselves couldn't have been more indifferent of anything. The witchlings, Luz, and Mabel alone seemed normal. And Stan seemed to be the least normal of all.
Ford noticed that his brother was unusually quiet and anxious. "You know," he mused from behind Stan. "I've never seen you look at a woman with that much fear in your eyes since Carla Mckorkle."
Stan shoved him, annoyed. "Aw, shut, up will ya?"
"I'm just saying…"
To his surprise, his great nephew suddenly joined in the conversation.
"No, seriously, Grunkle Stan, you're giving off some suspicious vibes." Dipper agreed. "You haven't spoken to anyone all morning, you haven't even acknowledged Waddles chewing your pant leg,"
"And you won't stop staring at that witch!" Ford finished.
"What's this we hear, pray tell?" Asked Mabel, sliding next to the three other Pines. "Shipping fuel?"
"Methinks so!" Agreed Luz, sliding in on the other side. "Spill."
Stan rubbed his temples for a long, long time. "No."
"Please?" Mabel begged.
"No." He repeated.
Mabel sighed. "Fine. Be that way. It doesn't even matter, because today, I'm showing these three the lay of the land!" She grabbed Luz with one arm, and Willow and Gus with the other. "We're gonna tour and explore Gravity Falls until our feet fall off!" Luz announced.
"I'm so excited, I don't care if that actually happens!" Gus added.
"I'm curious to see what a human civilization is really like." Willow said. "It will be a good learning experience."
"Yeah, you do that." Said Eda. "I'll be sitting here with my sis, waiting for death."
Lilith mumbled something inaudible, facedown, scarlet hair spilling out all across the table.
"Oh, no you don't!" Stan interjected. "Listen, here, girls: I've got kids to look after and Shack employees to protect, and it would sure be a heck of a lot easier if you could get your claws on some of your elixir stuff."
"He means 'please.'" Said Ford.
"I suppose that would be the practical thing to do." said Lilith.
"Okay, let's go." Eda decided.
"What about the 'no humans allowed' policy?" Dipper wondered.
Eda and Lilith gestured to their ears, annoyed.
"Oh, right! I keep forgetting! Witches…not human."
Eda nodded and pointed at Dipper as if to say, 'Yes, that's right, you idiot.'
He scribbled a few things down in his blue journal.
"You can come with us!" Luz brightly exclaimed. "All three of you!"
"Yeah, sure, fine, whatever, let's just head before," Eda was interrupted by Lilith spontaneously sprouting ten or so feathers. "And, okay, yep, leaving, bye!" Eda hurriedly ushered herself, her sister, the two witchlings and the three kids out the door.
……
For a while, their little group of seven traversed the woods, Mabel excitedly showing them everything there was to show.
"And this is a tree, and this is another tree, and another tree, and that there is a fake tree that's actually a secret bunker entrance, but that's not too important…"
Gus and Willow soaked in every detail, amazed at everything the human world had to offer, even in just one small town. Dipper and Luz, however, knew what Earth's forests looked like and grew bored fairly quickly. So, Luz turned around to find Eda, who had feathers slowly starting to, once again, poke out of her arms and face.
"Uh, Eda, you aren't looking too hot." Luz said worriedly.
"You sure you and Lilith can make it to the weird night market place on time?" Dipper added.
"Wha-what was that?" Eda seemed to suddenly snap back to her senses. "Sorry, I…zoned out. Oh, yes. Yes, we will."
The five others looked at her in concern. "Are you alright, Edalyn?" Lilith wondered, plucking a feather out of her jaw.
"Who, me?" Eda replied, going pink. "Yeah, I'm fine. I'm totally okay. No, no, I'm not okay, you're okay-wait, what?" She groaned. "Look, what I meant was, I'm fine. I'm great, actually. I'm extremely fine!"
Luz pursed her lips curiously. "Much like…him?"
"Who?" She replied.
"Stan Pines." The six others responded in unison.
Eda went a little more pink. "…Who?"
"Oh my goodness, you do still love him, don't you?" Lilith realized.
"Yeah, you think he's extremely fine!" Luz and Mabel cackled in unison.
Eda was silent for a second, until they came to a fork in the forest path. "Welp, looks like this is where we part ways. Bye!" She hurriedly jogged down the road.
Lilith squinted ahead down the path and called, "Wait, don't go that way, there's a-"
There was a sound of a roaring animal, and Eda dashed out of the trees, eyes wild.
"That was one big beaver."
"Yeah, let's just hurry away from there." Dipper agreed.
"Giant beavers? Gnome stampedes? Cash registers? Can your world get any crazier?" Gus cheered.
"You guys must have had some interesting adventures here." Willow mused.
"Well, actually, yeah." Said Dipper. "In fact, just last summer, we-"
"One of my time first crushes turned out to be a puppet-obsessed loser!" Mabel interrupted.
"Oh my gosh! Same! And then Eda ate him…What are the odds?" Luz said. "Did you also have a weird guy obsessed with magical illusions flirt with you?" She wondered.
"Yeah!" Mabel said.
"And then his sister did as well?" Luz continued.
"..No. I don't think Gideon has a sister."
"Oh. Well, anyway, are we almost there, Dipper?"
"Yeah, the town's just up through here." Dipper assured them.
"In that case, my sis and I have to get going. We're looking for any door with the number 13." Eda said.
"Good luck!" The three young witches called.
"If you see a guy in a green plaid coat with a briefcase, run for you life!" Mabel cheerfully called after them.
"Huh?" The sisters asked in unison.
"Go! Go get your magic meds!" Luz said, nudging them both forward. "We'll meet you back at the Mystery Shack in three hours, okay? Be nice to the other monsters! Don't pick unnecessary fights! Remember the lunch I packed you!"
The two started down the street.
Luz sniffed. "They grow up so fast."
"Let's go! People! Hello? Human realm right down there! What's the holdup?" Gus was already at the edge of town.
Luz, Willow and Mabel laughed. "Coming!" Mabel called. "Come on, gals, and, uh, Dipper. Keep it moving! Right this way! Prepare to have your magical minds blown!"
……
Eda and Lilith walked attentively down the street, eyes peeled for any door with the number 13 on it. Lilith carefully scanned the street, but didn't see any that would work. "According to Ford and that kid, only a door with a 13 on it can give us access to this Crawlsapce."
"You seeing any?" Eda asked.
"No." Said Lilith. "Are you?"
"We've checked five blocks." Said Eda. "This must not be a very unlucky part of town. Ugh! Where's Owlbert when you need him?"
"Why did you leave him at the Shack again?"
"I dunno. I've been tired lately."
Lilith sighed as her arm became enveloped by feathers. "We need to hurry. It's a miracle we haven't transformed yet. We need a door with a 13!"
"Wait a minute." Eda dug a thick black marker out of her hair and scribbled a '13' onto the nearest door. She opened it to reveal a living, breathing skin tunnel. "Presto."
"I cannot believe that actually worked." Lilith said.
"Trust me, sis. When in doubt, vandalize." Eda suddenly sprouted feathers all over one side of her face. "Let's hurry, shall we?"
Lilith hesitantly slid into the living tunnel close behind her sister.
In the dark, crowded market, the two witches sat up and looked around. Creatures and artifacts from hundreds of different dimensions greeted their eyes.
Lilith looked around, impressed. "Huh. Ford was right. If we'll find our elixir anywhere in this town, it will be here."
"Did I hear you lovely ladies are looking for an elixir?" A mysterious, cowled figure holding a glowing flask asked them. "I have all the latest in liquid curses, including this beauty that turns your toenails into thumbtacks!"
Eda rolled her eyes. "Look, creep, we're looking for Owl Beast Curse Reversal brew. Got any idea where that might be?"
"Remedies, huh? You'd best ask Shiverscales. Little furry guy. Has a stand with a big stone sign in front, somewhere down there." He looked at Eda scrutinizingly. "Hey, haven't I seen you before?"
"Um, no." Said Eda. She glanced over to her own wanted poster. In a panic, she stuffed it into her hair, dug her cloak out of her hair and quickly pulled it over her head. "No, you definitely haven't seen me. You had my mugshot sent out interdimensionally?" She hissed at Lilith.
"How was I supposed to know it would end up all the way out here?" She hissed back. She turned toward the cowled guy. "Thank you.
"Hey, it's what I'm here for. For some reason, no one wants to buy curses anymore. Perhaps you'd like a free sample…"
Lilith grabbed Eda and dragged her through the stands away from the cowled stranger, until, at last, they came to a rather small stand with a huge stone slab on top of it that read:
William Yessir Shiverscales' Bottles and Brews
"This is the guy we need?" Eda asked.
"I assume so, as you've parked your rears in front of my stand." A very low, scratchy voice responded. Lilith and Eda looked down to see a wiener dog in a necktie and a beret with a line of spikes down its back. "William Yessir Shiverscales, at your service. Call me Yes."
"Yes? Seriously? Why not Will?" Lilith asked.
"Oh, there's so many Wills in this world." The dog responded. "Yes is definitely unique. Now, do you want a brew or not?"
"You wouldn't happen to have any…" Lilith lowered her voice, "curse-reversals?"
"Why, almost every one in the book!" Yes responded. "What do you need?"
"Owl beast curse reversal." Eda said.
The dog-dinosaur winced. "Ooh, nasty one." He dug five or six bottles of amber elixir out of his stores and set them on the counter. "Who hated you enough to put that bad boy curse on you?"
"Never mind that. May we buy it?" Lilith quickly asked. "It's urgent, as you can surely see."
Yes looked, alarmed, and their rapidly feathering faces and hands. "Oho, you're well on your way to transforming now, aren't you? You know, it's a shame you didn't read the latest rule of the market."
"What latest rule?" Eda growled.
The velochshund pointed a taloned paw to a sign on the wall next to his stand. "No humans or cursed beings allowed."
"We can't be here?" Lilith asked.
"Nope." Yes grinned. "But, lucky for you, I care not for the sum of wealth I'd be given if I ratted you out. Not to worry, darlings, your secret's safe with-INTRUDERS! CURSED WITCHES IN THE MARKETPLACE!" He bellowed.
"Run!" Lilith cried.
Eda grabbed all the bottles from the counter and shoved them into her hood. She and her sister dashed through the crawl space, looking for an exit. Several angry customers and stand owners chased after
them. The witch duo zigzagged around the caverns, the mob right on their heels, most bearing weapons and strange talismans. The Clawthornes finally reached a dead end, ducked inside a cavity in the stone, and…emerged into the broad afternoon sunlight, panting. The market goers, somehow, did not follow. "How?" Lilith wondered, both eyes slowly darkening.
"Don't question it. Here." Eda tossed her a bottle of elixir and popped the top off her own, chugging it. She breathed a sigh of relief as her feathers fell off her and her hands shrank to their normal size. "That was close."
"No kidding." Lilith said. "I swear, if I ever get my hands on that Yes creature…"
"He'll be one dead dino dog," Eda agreed. "Let's just get back to the Shack and forget about it, shall we?"
"You just want to see that human again." Lilith smugly replied.
Eda crossed her arms and hesitated, before saying, "So what if I do?"
"Ah! You finally admit it. Now that, sister, is called progress." Lilith grinned.
Eda rolled her eyes, lightly shoved her sister aside, then quietly said, "You know, I guess it is.".
