Chapter XVI: The Consortium's Invite

Shinjuku Central Park (新宿セントラルパーク)/Shinjuku, Tokyo (新宿区, 東京)/May 25, 2019 (2019525) (Reality: May 25, 2021)/10:35 PM (JST)

Another urgent late-night incident similar to the Kuchisake-onna prompted the Phantom Thieves and Revenants into action.

Sekiken, Omusubi, Queen, Noir, Fox, and Oracle confronted the infamous Kunekune, also known as the 'modern Yokai', as they stormed into the park.

The four Phantom Thieves and the two Revenants quickly surrounded the long, slender, 8.5-foot tall white-bodied humanoid. Its ghostly white skin looked like a paper mannequin. Its visage had no facial features, except black, lifeless circular eyes.

As they equipped themselves for battle, Queen, Noir, and Sekiken charged and attacked the Kunekune.

"Take it down, guys!" Queen beckoned Oracle, Fox, and Omusubi to strike the Kunekune.

"Meheh! Come get you some!" Oracle yelled out, whipping out her yellow laser sword. Channeling her inner Star Wars fangirl, she showed off and twirled around her laser sword. With an exuberant grin adorning her face, she charged at the creature. "Yeah, here we go!"

"Stop showing off and attack, Oracle!" Fox berated her.

"Yeah, I've got this!" Oracle quickly rushed Kunekune and swung her laser sword at the urban legend creature.

Kunekune responded by twisting its slender body around. Oracle madly kept swinging, but Kunekune continued to twist itself around to throw her off. Growing frustrated, Oracle went for a straightforward blow, but Kunekune sidestepped her attack and got behind her. Fox intervened before Oracle turned to meet its gaze and fired his Heaven's gate gun at the creature. Stunned by Fox's blast, the Phantom Thief quickly carved through it with his Usumidori katana.

"I've stunned him, Oracle!" Fox called out.

Grinning like crazy, Oracle charged and shoved her laser sword through Kunekune's chest. Just then it looked like victory was at hand, Kunekune stretched its arms out and knocked both Phantom Thieves away.

Omusubi quickly produced his Hound-Type Blood Veil. The double hound heads snarled at the Kunekune. The left head snapped outward and grabbed Kunekune's left arm. The other head seized the creature's body. The hound heads bit down hard on Kunekune trying to hold it in place.

"I've got a lock on it! Take it down, you three!" Omusubi called to Sekiken, Queen, and Noir.

With that, Queen and Noir rushed forward. Drawing out their weapons, they split up and let Sekiken run past them. Invoking his Ogre-Type Blood Veil on his arm, Sekiken grabbed Kunekune. However, much to their dismay, Kunekune wiggled free from the Revenant's hold.

"Damn it! Don't let it get away!" Sekiken shouted.

As Kunekune tried slipping away, Noir cut it off from escaping. With a crazed smile on her face, Noir readied her Fleurs du Mal axe. Unleashing her Buster Axe, she lunged and hacked it with consecutive slashes, cutting it down to minimum size. Seemingly letting out a pained howl, Kunekune fought back by grabbing her axe. In response, Noir summoned her strongest Persona Lucy, which blasted Kunekune with Triple Down. While the Persona blasted away the creature, Noir blew a grotesque-looking hole through Kunekune's body with her Yagrush gun.

"Go for it, Queen!" Noir called out.

Hearing her name called out, Queen sprang out of a tree like a ninja and jumped high into the air. She clenched and channeled energy into her right fist. The Phantom Thief let out a deafening roar and unleashed her Nuclear Fists, hitting Kunekune's head with an aerial one-two hit combo.

After grinding the creature down, Sekiken quickly transformed into his Envoy of Vein state. Brandishing his Enduring Crimson sword, he slashed and bisected Kunekune with his Blade of Athos. Finally, after applying his Haste Gift on himself, Sekiken increased his fighting reflexes, quickly slicing up and finishing Kunekune off with Eternal Blade Dance.

"Done and done!" Queen declared.

After the fight was settled, Oracle summoned Al Azif to restore her friends' energies.

"Great work, guys!" Oracle cheerfully said.

"Hey, look! I don't think that thing's done yet!" Omusubi called out.

The group turned around and watched Kunekune's remains slowly rise. The Phantom Thieves and Revenants cautiously stood ready to attack. However, the creature's body twisted and faded in a blinding flash of light.

"Goodbye, Slenderman," Oracle remarked.

"It did have an eerie likeness to that character," Omusubi added.

"Where do you think it went?" wondered Noir.

"Probably back to its spiritual plane," Fox deduced.

Shaking the creature's ectoplasm from her metal knuckles, Queen scoffed. "Who knows and who cares? We took care of business."

Sekiken chuckled. "We sure did and then some. That said, is it safe to conclude the Yami Matter and Vamkyries are responsible for letting these spirits into our world?"

After calling off Lucy, Noir sighed. "We still haven't verified yet but I suspect so."

Omusubi withdrew his hound heads. "Well, that takes care of things here. Let's call it a night."

After calling off her Third-Tier Persona, Oracle stretched and yawned. "Yep, I could use some shut-eye. I haven't slept since last night."

Fox sighed. "Yeah, you should catch up on some sleep."

"Not my fault when I have all that homework and research!"

"It's called time management for a reason, Futaba."

"Yeah, yeah, quit lecturing me, Professor Inari!"

As he called off his Blood Veil, Sekiken pivoted to Queen and Noir. He extended a hand to both ladies.

"Shall we get going? I'll escort you two to your apartment."

Queen and Noir both held hands and nodded.

"Thank you," Noir replied with a smile.

"Just try not to get too chatty, Louis," Queen coolly smirked.

"Heheh, don't worry, Mako-chan. We'll just talk about business."

"Business? Sure, whatever you say."

With that, the group split up and departed. Omusubi went his separate way. Oracle and Fox left together. Sekiken, Queen, and Noir headed straight for the Roppongi area.

Big Bang Burger/Shibuya, Tokyo (渋谷区, 東京)/May 31, 2019 (2019531) (Reality: May 31, 2021)/5:20 PM (JST)

Arriving at the fast food dine-in, Skyler, Hifumi, and Io met with Ren, Ann, Louis, Makoto, Haru, Ryuji, and Miyako. The group quietly discovered the latest happenings dealing with the malevolent spirits.

"Man, first the Kuchisake-onna and now Kunekune just last weekend?" Louis recapped them on the latest happenings.

"Dude, what the hell is going on? Why are these spirits just popping up and causing mischief?" Ryuji wondered after biting into his burger.

"Ryuji, ahem," Miyako pointed to the ketchup on the left side of her boyfriend's cheek.

"Thanks, Miyako."

"I'm suspecting the Yami Matter and the Vamkyries are empowering these spirits," Skyler inferred. "Incidentally, Io can't seem to trace any Yami Matter essences lately."

"Is this true?" Ann asked the Persona Vein.

Io nodded. "Yes, I can't sense anything related to Yami Matter's presence. I haven't sensed Vamkyrie activity either."

Ren quietly added. "So, they're not like the Yokai we fought at Meiji Shrine."

Skyler reminded the Phantom Thief leader. "No, remember those entities were revived by the Yami Matter. These evil spirits have been running amok independently before the Yami Matter surfaced. It's just now these evil spirits have been given more open range outside their usual territory."

"Anyway, I think that's enough talk about evil spirits," Makoto proposed as she placed a letter on the table.

Skyler and Hifumi immediately recognized the letter sitting in front of them. They, too, took out the same invite letter sent to them by the Consortium. Likewise, Ren and Ryuji put letters on their table. The group suspiciously stared at the letters. The group put two and two together, recognizing that the Consortium knows about them. Ever since the four Cryptids attack at Akihabara, the Consortium name has been constant. When the name was brought up to Sae, the SIU Director denied such a name exists, but has shed light on a possible underground unit involved with illegal activities. Moreover, they had their first encounter with Consortium members: Momobami Kirari and Ririka & Igarashi Sayaka. Kirari made it clear that the organization has been monitoring their activities and battles.

The Consortium became a nagging thought in their mind. Not even Sae has been able to trace their point of origin. The shadow organization was regarded as another urban myth kept under wraps from public records. However, the Phantom Thieves and the Revenants think they will soon meet this shadow organization's other figureheads.

"June 7th. That's a whole week away," Ren reminded them.

"Yeah, Futaba and Yusuke got letters, too," Ann added.

"So have me, Mia, and Yakumo," Louis informed them.

"Why would they want to invite us? And how would they know where we live?" Haru wondered.

"What I'd like to know is why would they expose themselves to us? What do they have to lose besides their secrecy?" Skyler was confused by this whole situation.

Ryuji grabbed his head. "Augh, this whole situation just sucks. We don't have to go, do we?"

Ren sighed. "I'm going just to find out who the other members of the Consortium are."

Ann resolved. "Yeah, me, too."

Makoto concurred. "Haru and I are in, too."

Louis calmly chuckled. "I suppose we're all in this together, aren't we? Besides, we should go to relax and enjoy the atmosphere."

Hifumi turned to Ren. "The Roppongi Hills Mori Tower isn't a bad venue for a formal party event."

The Phantom Thief replied. "Yeah, it's a great location and we'll have plenty of room to move around."

Miyako patted Ryuji's shoulder. "Oh, we should find you a nice suit for the occasion!"

Ryuji grinned like a happy boy. "Heh, I know I can count on you, babe."

Skyler shook his head. "It's going to be an interesting night to be sure, but we won't have to wait much longer to learn who the Consortium are."

"Hey, guys!" The voice of Shinya called out from the other side of the restaurant.

The group turned to see Shinya walking in with Nicola, Reiko, and Li-Ming. They joined in and sat at a table opposite the young adults.

"Shinya. What brings you here?" Ann asked him and his friends.

"I kinda invited them," Ren confessed.

"Yeah, to catch up and talk about the last movie we saw!" Shinya added. "Wasn't Pokémon: Detective Pikachu just an awesome flick?!"

"It was a decent movie. Better than the last couple of Pokémon animated movies," Nicola added his positive take on the movie. "Although, some of those Pokémon looked creepy and weird in live action form."

Reiko giggled. "But, most of them were pretty cute like Pikachu, Karakara, and those Fushigidane!" Her eyes lit up as she showed off her Fushigidane plushie. "They were so cute I went and bought one!"

Li-Ming added. "Yep, we had a fun time watching the movie."

Ann nodded. "We're glad you accepted our invite."

Hifumi pivoted to Io. "And you enjoyed Detective Pikachu, too, right?"

"Yes, it was very cute!"

"But, man I can't believe you're inviting us to see Godzilla: King of the Monsters soon, Ren!" Shinya exclaimed. "I've only seen some of the movies on TV, but this one has Godzilla, Rodan, Mothra, and King Ghidorah in it! This is going to be an awesome movie to watch!"

Ren chuckled. "Yeah, I've been enjoying our outings."

Ann waved a finger to the preteens. "But, as long as you bring your own yen to pay for your tickets and theater food."

Nicola chuckled. "Yes, we know you're excited, Shinya, but you can wait two more days."

Makoto sipped her drink. "Well, you have fun, kids."

Io turned to Hifumi. "We're going to see it, too, right?"

"Of course, Io," Hifumi smiled.

"All three of us are going to see it together," Skyler interjected as he handed an orange juice box to Io, who put it in between her large breasts.

With a delighted smile on her face, Io sipped the straw and drank her juice while her juice box firmly stayed intact between her breasts. Upon seeing this, most of the girls awkwardly looked at this. Futaba intensely glared with jealousy while grasping and measuring her smaller chest.

"Oh my…" Haru blinked.

"Good grief," Ann rolled her eyes.

"I'm not jealous at all," Mia sardonically muttered.

Turning over to Skyler, Makoto fiercely pointed at his face. "You taught her to do that, didn't you, pervert?"

"Whoa! She did that on her own! Don't accuse me, Mako-kins!" Skyler yelled out.

"Liar!"

Hifumi giggled while patting Io's head. "No, it's true. She learned it on her own while watching a late-night show with us."

Hearing this, Makoto groaned. "That still doesn't help Skyler's case. He let Io watch a fetish program."

"Where's the harm in what Io's doing?" Skyler shrugged.

"I'd call 'em Ioobs, but that's just me," Ryuji added, which made Miyako slap the back of his head. "Ow, hey!"

"Ioobs? Huh, that's a clever name," Louis added.

"No, it's not!" Makoto rebuked. "Oh my god, we got from talking about the Consortium and movies to Io's breasts."

Yakumo added. "Welcome to our usual conversations."

After finishing her juice, Io turned over to Hifumi. " Hey, how about we order those fries I like so much?"

"Sure, c'mon," Hifumi got up and walked with Io to order them a basket of fries.

As the group members picked up their letters, they showed off their invitations to remind each other about June 7th, the day they'd finally meet the Consortium. They also remarked on the event on their phone calendars.

Louis leaned over and whispered to Makoto and Haru. "If the Momobami sisters and Sayaka know you're Phantom Thieves, you think we should expect a set-up at this party?"

Hearing this, Haru covered her mouth. "Oh, I didn't consider that."

Furrowing her brows, Makoto almost bit her bottom lip. "Since the letters were specifically sent to us, I wouldn't be surprised. I'd advise extreme caution when we go. I agree though, it could be a trap."

The Phantom Thieves and Revenants took this warning to heart and settled for the unexpected.

Roppongi Hills (六本木ヒルズ)/Roppongi Hills Mori Tower/Roppongi (六本木)/Minato, Tokyo (港区, 東京)/June 7, 2019 (201967) (Reality: June 7, 2021)/7:00 PM (JST)

The Phantom Thieves and Revenants walked into the formal ballroom dressed to impress. Each was dressed in their own respective choice of formal wear.

Ren wore a maroon red tuxedo with a black and white vest underneath. The back of his tuxedo split into two coattails that helped authenticate the whole aristocratic look he was going for. He also wore white gloves and black dress shoes.

Ann came in a gorgeous corset red dress. Her dress didn't come with sleeves. Her dress went down to above her knees. The bottom of her dress was trimmed with black and white. She had on a pink boa that started on one arm and stretched over to her other arm. She wore a red rose on her hair. She wore black and red high-heeled shoes.

Ryuji wore a black vest with a light gray long-sleeved dress shirt. He already had his sleeves folded up to an elbow's length. He also wore a solid yellow tie with black spots, black dress pants, and black-and-gray dress shoes.

Yusuke came looking sophisticated as intended. He wore a dark blue unbuttoned dress shirt. Underneath the dress shirt, he had on a black and white embroidered vest with a turquoise collar and cuffs hemmed in to the very same vest. Additionally, he wore white dress pants and black shoes.

Makoto walked hand in hand with Haru. Makoto wore an elegant and long royal blue dress. The dress was so long it dragged across the floor. A side of the dress had an opening, which revealed her legs and black high heels.

Haru wore contrasting lighter colors compared to her girlfriend's dress. She came in a cute pink dress that went down to her knees. Her top was a black corset top with a pink see-through veil overlapping it. Her choice of footwear is black high heels.

Futaba came in a sleeveless black dress with neon green embroidered designs, which looked like the designs seen on her Oracle outfit. Adorning the topmost part of her head is a tiny black hat. Her black shoes had neon green heel stilettos.

Akechi arrived wearing a near all-white tuxedo, sans his light gray vest and a red tie. His white tuxedo shirt and pants gave Akechi a classy appearance, contrasting his black Crow outfit. His footwear is a pair of white dress shoes.

Sumire walked in wearing an eye-appealing black corset dress. She also has red high-heels and red flowery corset bracelets. Her red hair is also worn in a bun with a few strands of hair hanging down the sides of her face.

Skyler walked in with Hifumi beside him. Skyler wore a mostly black formal buttoned shirt trimmed with red and yellow. Two leather straps crisscrossed over the chest. Additionally, he wore black pants and dress shoes to match his dress shirt.

Hifumi came in a beautiful sleeveless white evening dress. The top of the dress started with two thin white straps converging and forming into the dress. The dress went down several inches above her knees. Her choice of footwear is white dress shoes with clear heel stilettos.

Standing near Skyler and Hifumi, Io arrived wearing a simple but gorgeous white dress and white high heels.

Louis approached Makoto and Haru, offering his hands to them. He wore a white long-sleeved dress shirt with a red and red vest underneath. He had the top of his dress shirt unbuttoned to show off his vest. He wore matching colored dress pants and black dress shoes.

Mia came in a sleeveless lavender formal dress with a black feather-styled boa draped around the back of her neck. She wore her hair in stylized curly pigtails. Other accessories she wore included elbow-length white gloves and black high-heeled stiletto boots.

Yakumo wore a black long-sleeved dress shirt with a white and gray vest underneath. He maintained his hair in his usual ponytail style. He also wore matching colored dress pants and gray dress shoes.

Jack wore a white tuxedo with a black and gray vest underneath. He had on matching white pants, a white cap trimmed with silver, and black dress shoes.

Eva came in a dark red v-necked mini-formal dress coupled with a white feathered boa draped along her neck and shoulders. She had on purple lip gloss, rose eyeshadow, a pair of elbow-length white gloves, and shin-length black leather boots.

The Elven Princesses, too, came with the group to scope the party. Anastasia arrived wearing a knee-length light purple dress. The top part of her dress barely covered her large cleavage but she had on a white feathered boa that covered her shoulders. She has her hair done in a bun. She wore makeup on her face, including wearing bright purple lipstick. Her footwear is clear heel stilettos, revealing her feet as her pedicured toenails are painted purple.

Nadia came in a revealing, elegant black dress. The top of her dress exposed much of her back and on the front, she has on a bronze necklace. Her hair is worn in a long braided ponytail. Her face has some make-up and is seen wearing dark red lipstick. She also has on elbow-length black fingerless gloves and black heeled shoes.

The group was floored upon entering the ballroom. They marveled at the scenic venue and the assortment of food and drinks being served.

"Look at this set-up, everyone!" Sumire marveled at the elegant and sophisticated scenery of the dinner party.

"I hope it's all you can eat!" Nadia said as her eyes lit up.

"Control yourself," Anastasia chuckled over Nadia's desire to eat every plate she could find.

"Oh wow, all that food I'm seeing is not a dream?" Ryuji fell into a trance as he gleamed over the food layouts.

Ann quickly pinched Ryuji.

"Ow, hey! That hurt!"

"You said you were dreaming. Just wanted to check," Ann let out an innocent chuckle.

"The one good thing I can say about the Consortium is that they gave us VIP passes to this event. So, it appears we don't have to pay for anything," Yusuke stated.

"So free food, drinks, and access to the art museum. Sounds good to me!" Futaba gleefully said as she grabbed Yusuke's hand. "C'mon, Inari, let's check out what they've got!"

"Hey, just because we have VIP passes, that doesn't mean…! Slow down, Futaba!" Yusuke wails were heard as the other Thieves and Revenants started to go their separate ways.

"Shouldn't we be looking for the Consortium?" Eva wondered.

"Don't worry. I think they'll find us first," Jack stated.

"Pardon me, you two. I think I'll go on ahead and scour this grandiloquent vicinity," Akechi suggested.

"Be our guest then," Eva slightly frowned, watching Akechi walking away.

"Eva, please," Jack whispered.

"I didn't say anything disparaging to him."

"No, but your tone was passive-aggressive."

Eva scoffed. "Forget him. Let's look around this place." As she said this, she grabbed Jack's arm and walked around the ballroom.

"Hey, Ren," Skyler addressed him. "You know they'll be here."

"Yeah, the Consortium invited us. Hopefully, they'll show themselves to us," Ren replied.

Hifumi took Skyler's hand. "We can worry about that later. Let's go and explore this place. I'm interested in seeing the art museum."

"Sure, let's go," Skyler complied as he took Hifumi into the ballroom first.

"Guess we'll tag along with those two," Mia turned to Yakumo.

"I suppose. I'm supposed to find Emily here. So, we should find her."

Ann grabbed Ren's hand. "Ready whenever you are, sweetie."

Ren nodded and escorted them into the ballroom.

Makoto, Haru, and Louis walked around the ballroom for a while until they saw Sae, Karen, and Aurora talking together.

"Look, Louis. Your sister is here," Haru pointed toward Sae.

"Yes, along with Mako-chan's older sister and Aurora," Louis noted the other two.

"Yeah, and it sounds like they're talking about us," Makoto observed.

"Heh, so what's the story with my brother and your sister?" Karen smirked, teasing her friend. She wore a purple formal dress with a white scarf and black shoes.

"Yes, why don't you give us the full scoop, Sae?" Aurora asked. She came wearing a long-sleeved peach and white flower dress, a classy rose scarf, and white shoes.

"Where to start? Makoto told me she's been in a relationship. I thought it was just her and Haru, but seeing Louis with those two surprises me," Sae remarked calmly. She came in a strapless long black dress, dark purple eyeshadow, and red lip gloss.

"Ah, that brother of mine is quite the charmer, isn't he? He's not that shy little boy I remember him being," Karen giggled.

"He's grown into quite the suave gentleman if I do say so myself," added Aurora.

"Your brother is quite an intelligent young man, and he treats those two ladies with him quite well," a voice belonging to an older gentleman spoke up, garnering Karen's attention.

Sae, Karen, and Aurora turned to see Yoshida, who looked around the ballroom and saw Ren on another side.

"Louis has been hanging around people who're shaping his character," the gentleman said.

"Yoshida Toranosuke, you're looking well this evening," Sae acknowledged the politician, who approached offering them glasses of red wine.

"Oh, thank you," Karen took her glass.

"You're too kind," Aurora accepted the drink offered to her.

"So, are you two observing your siblings this evening?" Yoshida asked Sae and Karen.

"Not really. They came here after receiving invitations in the mail," Sae said, taking the third wine glass.

"I see. Who sent the invites?"

Sae answered. "The Consortium."

Yoshida gave a confused response. "Pardon? The Consort-who?"

"Exactly. It's some organization I haven't been able to trace during these past few months. Makoto and I tried searching for leads, but we've come up short."

"The Consortium isn't anything like that organization Shido Masayoshi was involved with?" Karen asked her.

"I couldn't tell you if we haven't been able to find anything, but no doubt cover-ups are being made to hide their activities."

"Hey, Karen! Look who I brought with me?" Louis called out as he walked up with Makoto and Haru accompanying him.

"Mmmhmm, look at the handsome ladies man we've got here," Aurora whistled out loud, making Makoto and Haru's faces flush from embarrassment.

"Looks like you've been busy, little brother," Karen chuckled, which drew an intense glare from Sae. "Hehe, sorry my bad."

"Sis, listen, I know this looks like a surprise," Makoto reasoned with Sae.

"Why would you being with Haru and Louis bother me? You're an adult now. I just hope you know you're making a good choice."

"Well…" Makoto paused as she glanced over to Louis and Haru talking with Yoshida. "No, I know I made the right choice."

The SIU Director nodded. "So, about…"

Makoto whispered. "Sorry, I've still found zilch about the Consortium. They're like some kind of ghost network. We've scoured all over Tokyo and found no activity."

"If the Phantom Thieves can't even find them, that's worrisome," Sae said.

Yoshida laughed as he had a lively conversation with Louis. "Well, you've done well to meet someone like Ren. And you've also done well to develop some leadership skills within your network of friends."

"Thank you. I couldn't have done it without your encouragement, Yoshida-san."

"I think you'd be very proud of him, Yoshida-san," Haru added into their amicable discussion.

"And how is your business doing, Okumura?" Yoshida asked the young businesswoman.

"It's going well. My business has been picking up and we're implementing a few more new locations. Thank you. I know there are quite a few other politicians like yourself, Yoshida-san, as well as business leaders like me and internationals attending this event," Haru scanned the room as she spotted a Chinese woman speaking with a businessman. "See? There's someone I recognize. Her name is Mei and she was quite interested in Okumura products. Although I'm surprised she would be considering how the Chinese aren't treated well here."

"Yes, I've seen her before. While it's already been documented that the Chinese and Koreans aren't fairly treated in Japan, I'd like to help anyone regardless of their ethnicity."

"You're a good man, Yoshida-san."

"Well, I wish you nothing but success, Okumura."

"Thank you," Haru politely bowed.

"Hey, Haru. Makoto and I are just about to head over to get some drinks. Want to come?" Louis offered Haru.

"Oh yes, wait up!"

As they watched the three head off to get drinks, Sae and Karen shared a chuckle.

"Aww, they're so cute together I just wanna pinch their cheeks!" Aurora squeed loudly.

"Our siblings have grown up, haven't they, Sae?" Karen sighed happily.

"Yeah, they don't need us anymore."

"Hah, amen to that."

As Sae continued her conversation with Karen, Aurora, and Yoshida, Akechi came around a corner of the ballroom. As he meticulously scanned around, his eyes caught Sae, who hadn't noticed him yet. His internal voice cursed frantically in his mind. As he quickly turned around, Akechi walked off.

"I should've suspected that Sae would be here," apprehensively muttered Akechi.

Having felt a tingling sensation in the back of her neck, Sae instinctively turned around and inferred that someone was watching her closely. Her first thought was not surprisingly Akechi. However, she missed out on Akechi, who blended in with the crowd and narrowly escaped the older Niijima's gaze.

"Sae? Is everything ok?" Karen noticed the SIU Director's paralyzed look.

"Huh? Sorry, Karen. What were you saying?" Sae asked apologetically.

"Nevermind."

Skyler, Hifumi, Io, Mia, and Yakumo explored the Mori Arts Center. After seeing some art pieces, they saw Davis garbed in a security uniform. He was seen talking with Tori and Hiroshi. The young man and young woman were dressed in security gear.

"Hey, isn't that Davis?" Hifumi noticed the large man.

"Oh yeah, that's right. He said he'd be working security for tonight's thing," Skyler recalled.

"Looks like he's busy. Hey, there's Tori and Hiroshi, too," Yakumo said. "I think we should let them be."

"Huh? Hey, you all showed up!" Davis spotted his Revenant friends.

"Yeah, we sure did! Hey, if you're busy, we'll leave you be!" Skyler called out.

"Yeah, I was just talking to Tori and Hiroshi here since they're working as extra security," Davis said.

Mia smirked. "Looks like the department has you two working at tonight's event?"

"Yeah, we wanted to come here and chill with you guys, but duty calls," Hiroshi answered.

"Yeah, we're working security tonight. Hopefully, we can see Makoto here. She is here, right?" Tori queried.

"She is. We'll be sure to pass along your message to her," Skyler said.

"So, where to now?" Yakumo asked Skyler.

"Back to the ballroom then."

With that, the Revenants and Hifumi headed over to check with the others.

Davis instructed the two police officers. "And so that's how we're covering security tonight, you two. You got it?"

Tori responded. "Don't worry. Leave this to us."

Hiroshi added. "We'll let you know if we see anything suspicious."

"Now, that's what I like to hear."

Elsewhere, the Spiritual Gamblers explored the ballroom to get a good vibe of the place. They came in just a little before the Phantom Thieves and Revenants did. Like the others, the Gamblers came dressed for the evening festivities.

Yumeko came in a strapless black formal dress to match the tiny black hat on the crown of her head. She wore red lip gloss, a golden collar around her neck, elbow-length, red-striped black gloves, and high-heeled black shoes.

Ryōta wore a light brown dress shirt coupled with a white vest underneath. He also had on matching colored pants and black dress shoes.

Mary came in a navy blue formal dress. She wore pink lip gloss, elbow-length, cyan gloves, and high-heeled white shoes.

Midari came in a short-sleeved black dress that went down above her knees. She wore black wristbands, black rose lip gloss & fingernails, and high-heeled black shoes.

Itsuki came in a sleeveless yellow formal dress. She wore pink lip gloss, red fingernails, and high-heeled clear shoes.

"Wow, look at all this! I feel like I'm part of the crowd!" Yumeko merrily squeaked with joy.

"If you mean part of a crowd of rich snobs and some corrupt corporate suits, then I don't see why I'd want to fit in," Mary remarked, snubbing at the pompous side of the crowd.

"C'mon, we've been involved in shady dealings before. These people have probably gambled more with their money in their line of businesses, it's like how we gamble," Yumeko reminded them. "So, we're no better than they are."

"But, did any of these rich fucks ever have to give up an eye as I did?" Midari pointed to her eyepatch.

"Who's to say? Some likely lost more than an eye," Itsuki said.

"Hey, check it out. Look who's here!" Ryōta garnered his friends' attention from the crowds.

The group saw Terano wearing a sky blue dress. Her brown eyes scanned the formal ball guests as they greeted her.

"I'm surprised to see you all here. Nonetheless, good evening," Terano acknowledged the Spiritual Gamblers.

"I do like your dress, Terano," Yumeko commented on Terano's formal wear.

"If you're here, then some of your associates are, too," Mary said.

"That's correct," Terano replied. "My colleague Rei and my sister Yumi are here, too."

Walking beside Terano's left side is Rei. Her choice of formal wear is a light yellow formal gown. Her light golden eyes met the gazes of the guests allured by her formal appearance.

"Batsubami Rei, how have you been? I also like your dress, too!" Yumeko gleefully acknowledged her.

"It wasn't that long ago since we met, Jabami Yumeko, but it's good to see you and your friends," Rei smiled and bowed.

"Thank you," Ryōta added.

Standing on Terano's right side is Yumi. She wore a light emerald formal dress.

"Totobami Yumi?!" Ryōta exclaimed.

"Hi! I love your dresses!" Yumi cheerily greeted them.

"Thanks. Geez, are we going to be complementing our dresses all night or something?" Mary wondered.

"Feh, these fancy places aren't my forte. Way too formal for my tastes," Midari scoffed, rolling her eyes toward the sophisticated ballroom.

Itsuki shrugged. "I don't know. It kinda grows on you. Maybe you'd like to dance, Midari?"

Midari snorted. "As if."

"So, are you still interested in dueling against Kirari again, Yumeko?" Terano asked the Compulsive Gambler. "Do understand you'll have to beat me first if you want Kirari."

"Unless you have something new to show, then I'll pass. Ryōta and I have already beaten you and your sister Yumi, Terano."

Terano sighed. "You don't need to remind me."

"I hope I can duel Kirari and the other members of the Momobami Clan with my Nine-Tails! Just the thought of it excites me!" Yumeko enthusiastically added. Her red eyes were already flaring to match her inner gambling enthusiasm.

Ryōta replied with a nervous chuckle. "Probably best you don't. Not here at this party."

Mary scoffed. "Yeah, no kidding. We don't want you causing a scene and getting us kicked out."

Yumeko blinked. "Oh yeah. We got those invites because of the Consortium, but where are they?" She scanned the ballroom for suspicious activity.

Watching the Spiritual Gamblers and the other Momobami Clan from afar, Kirari, Ririka, and Sayaka bided their time. Kirari wore a teal formal dress with elbow-length white gloves and kept her hair styled in the knotted fashion. Ririka wore a similar colored dress but distinguished herself from her twin sister by keeping her back-length hair down. Sayaka wore a dark purple formal dress and no sleeves.

"They're all here, Lady Kirari," Sayaka addressed the Momobami woman.

Sipping a little champagne from a glass, Kirari's blue lips curved into a sly smirk.

"Yes, I know. Why don't we go and say hello?" Kirari said.

"Sister, look. They're here, too," Ririka pointed to the Phantom Thieves and Revenants, as they scoured through the formal party.

"Yes, now things are getting more interesting," Kirari added with a reserved smile.

Spotting Kirari in the distance, Terano gave a scowling expression, which Rei and Yumi carefully noticed.

"Uh oh! She's got that intense look!" Yumi gasped.

"And when she gets like that, there's only one reason for it," Rei stated.

They quickly spotted Kirari conversing with Sayaka and Ririka.

"She'd best keep away if she knows what's good for her," Terano growled between her clenched teeth.

"Please, calm down, sis," Yumi pleaded to Terano.

"Sorry, I'll try my best," the wheelchair-bound woman relaxed and sighed deeply after a deep breath.

As the evening progressed, more guests started to pour in and sections became crowded, forcing some to move around. Skyler, Hifumi, Io, Mia, and Yakumo found Emily, who came wearing a dark red formal dress, white high-heeled shoes, and wore light red lip gloss.

"Guys, you're not going to guess who I saw," Emily brought their attention over to a man dressed in a dark green formal suit and pants coupled with a white and gray vest underneath and a red tie. Eon the hoatzin is seen perched on his left shoulder.

"Mido?!" The Revenants yelled quietly while not drawing attention to themselves.

"Shhh! Yeah, but he didn't come alone," Emily showed them the two individuals.

Standing next to Mido are Jocelyn and Carolyn. With Miki nowhere to be seen, the pair appeared to accompany Mido.

Jocelyn is seen wearing a black faux leather midi dress and black high-heel, open-toed sandals. Jocelyn's accessories consisted of gold earrings, a golden necklace, and dark purple fingernails & toenails.

Carolyn is seen wearing a floor-length white & blue chiffon lace evening dress. Underneath the long dress, she has on white high-heels. Her accessories consisted of white earrings, a silver crucifix necklace, and pink lipstick.

"That's him all right but who are the two ladies with him?" Mia muttered.

"One of them looks like she came out of a dominatrix show and the other has a nun motif," Skyler meticulously eyed Jocelyn and Carolyn.

"I don't care. I only care about what Mido is up to," Yakumo angrily whispered as Emily held his hand.

"C'mon not here and now, Yakumo," Emily consoled him.

"I'll try to manage myself but I can't make any promises. Just seeing him pisses me off."

Skyler nodded. "Good job gathering intel for us, Emily."

"Sure, anytime."

Hifumi whispered to Skyler. "We should be mindful and not look suspicious. Let's distance ourselves from them."

Io concurred. "She's right. If Mido notices any of us are onto him, it may trigger his memories of us. We can't afford that kind of risk."

"Good idea. C'mon, we'll talk about this elsewhere," Skyler gathered the group and headed away from Mido, Jocelyn, and Carolyn's location.

As they passed by, Yakumo and Emily recognized Marty and Andrea. Marty was seen garbed in a gray dress shirt with khaki-colored dress pants and brown leather shoes. Andrea is seen wearing a pink & white corset dress and white high heels.

"Hey, fancy seeing you here. Yakumo and Emily, am I right?" Andrea recalled the Revenants' names.

"Wow, you have a good memory. I'm surprised you two are here," Emily replied.

"Well, this may be a surprise but I'm someone with wealth to my name," Marty stated.

"Wait, you're telling us you're rich and own some company?" Yakumo surmised.

"Good guess. Yes, I am," Marty genuinely smiled.

"Wait, what? You're kidding. When we met, you looked like just a regular guy," Yakumo said.

"He's the CEO of his family's company in the United States," Louis chimed in as Skyler and his group saw Louis, Makoto, and Haru convene with them.

"What?! We were talking with a CEO?!" Emily exclaimed in disbelief.

"But, he's been so casual with us," Yakumo recalled their previous interactions.

"Don't always judge a book by its cover. Marty likely didn't want to draw too much attention," Louis said.

Andrea nodded. "You're right. Marty was never a braggart when it comes to his health. He's used a good amount of his wealth to give to charities and he asks nothing in return."

"Well, that's wonderful to know," Emily smiled.

"So, what brings you all here?" Marty asked the Revenants.

"We were invited. We're supposed to meet some group," Louis answered.

"Who?" Andrea queried.

"Louis, you're not going to believe who's here," Skyler muttered as he turned Louis toward Mido's far-off direction.

"Why am I not surprised?" Louis frowned upon seeing the bioengineer/paleontologist. As he laid his eyes on Mido, Louis kept his anger on a tight leash.

Makoto approached Louis. "Hey, we can move elsewhere if you want."

"No, I'll be fine, Mako-chan. I appreciate your concerns."

Unbeknownst to Skyler and his entourage, a man and his daughter watched him during a conversation with a French couple and their daughter over some business matters. Gregorio and Cruz closely watched Louis and his group.

Gregorio was garbed in a form-fitting black buttoned suit with medals clipped on the left side of his pectoral area. He wore matching colored dress pants and dark brown boots. The cuffs of his sleeves had golden metal trimmed around them.

Cruz came dressed in a gorgeous pale blue dress. She wore elbow-length white gloves with embroidered flower designs on them. She had on an ivory necklace adorning her collar and pale blue earrings.

"Father, look," Cruz showed Gregorio toward the Revenants' direction.

"So, I see," Gregorio's brows furrowed as his gaze met those with Skyler and Louis, but he kept his gaze firmly on the latter.

"Gregorio, sorry I forgot to ask if you and your daughter would like to see our daughter, Sasha, perform?" The French man queried his business colleague. "You know she's a prima donna for an opera company."

"Yes, where is she performing if I may ask?" Gregorio inquired while his attention stayed on Louis.

"Oh, the Tokyo Opera City Concert Hall in two weeks. My wife and I have some tickets."

"Thank you, you can drop them off when we meet again," Gregorio bowed. "Please, pardon me."

"So sorry, but we'd love to come to see your daughter perform," Cruz bowed to the French couple. She briefly faced the white-haired French girl, who came dressed in a long-sleeved silver dress. "We'll talk more about your performance over lunch, Sasha."

Sasha waved and blew a kiss. "Of course. Au revoir, Cruz." As the young French woman turned the other way, she bypassed a tall dark brown woman with back-length dark brown hair, blue eyes, and wearing a beautiful African dress and bright yellow high-heels. "Pardon me."

"Of course," the African woman nodded, allowing Sasha to pass by.

Standing next to the African woman is a slightly less tall Caucasian woman with back-length blonde hair, forest green eyes, and wearing a light blue evening dress and clear high-heel sandals.

"This has been quite a calm evening, hasn't it, Ayana?" The Caucasian spoke to her colleague with an Aussie accent.

"It sure is, Kara. You want to get some drinks?"

"I'm down for some."

Not far from where Ayana and Kara left to get champagne was Huey and Samantha. Joining the aforementioned are Cammy and Lance.

"I hear Tori and Hiroshi are working security tonight," Cammy said.

"You want to go find them?" Lance asked.

"Sure, I believe Marty and Andrea are here, too," Huey added.

"Looks like the Advent Eight are all here. Let's take a group selfie," Samantha suggested as they went to find Tori and Hiroshi first.

As the Phantom Thieves and Revenants prepared to leave the ballroom, Gregorio and Cruz casually approached them.

"Louis, my old friend. It's been a while," Gregorio addressed the Revenant, who recognized the man's deep voice and slowly turned to meet his stern gaze.

Upon meeting Gregorio and Cruz, Louis nearly froze, but he regained confidence to face them.

Skyler walked over to Louis. "Hey, you don't have to talk to them if you don't want to."

"No, I'll be fine, Skyler," Louis nodded.

"Oh god, it's him," Emily whispered to Yakumo.

"Yeah, but let's see where this leads," Yakumo said.

The Phantom Thieves and Revenants had a brief and quiet staredown with Gregorio and Cruz. Then, Gregorio raised his hands, almost causing the members to cautiously stand their ground. The man's hands clapped together. This drew the attention of some of the guests.

"What's the big idea, Gregorio?" Louis frowned. "You aren't one for theatrics."

"What? I can't express my thrill to see you again, old friend?"

Louis scoffed. "Have you forgotten? I've broken off my ties with you."

Makoto and Haru walked up to Louis. The two ladies pivoted toward Cruz's direction, who quietly stood beside her father.

"That must be…" Haru whispered as Makoto finished for her.

"Cruz Silva, the daughter of the politician Gregorio Silva. I don't have much info on her since she hardly makes herself known to the public," Makoto astutely answered her girlfriend.

Noticing Louis with Makoto and Haru, Cruz gave a cold glare as if she were irked by the two ladies' presence near him. Unfettered from her father's control, she walked over to Louis.

"Louis, you're looking well."

"Yeah, same with you, Cruz," Louis firmly stared at her, the same woman he dated not too long ago.

"What's the story between you two?" Makoto asked Louis. "C'mon, spill."

Gregorio interjected with a pompous chuckle. "Go on. Tell these lovely young lady friends about your formerly arranged marriage with my daughter."

"Wait?! Arranged marriage?!" Makoto and Haru exclaimed in unison.

"You were supposed to marry this woman, Louis?!" Ann questioned him.

"Well, looks like Louis was already a player before he met you two!" Nadia remarked toward Makoto and Haru.

"Oh my, I wonder what caused him to break off this marriage?" Sumire deduced.

"Why don't we listen and find out?" Akechi suggested.

Eva whispered to Jack. "Who would've guessed Louis and Cruz would meet again."

"It's like fate brought them together again. The last time I saw Cruz, she mutated into the Queen. Skyler and I fought to stop her frenzy. Now, she appears well and has no memories of our previous lifetime," Jack firmly watched Louis' interactions with Gregorio and Cruz.

"I think you should tell them, man," Skyler suggested as he noticed the other members in their group, specifically the ladies dying to know the backstory between the Revenant and Gregorio's beautiful daughter.

"Go on, Louis. Tell them about us," Cruz gave her approval to speak about their past relationship.

"Guess there's no sense hiding it," Louis sighed, modestly rubbing the back of his head. He gave in and explained. "Cruz was my old flame while I started college. I met her during a professor's lecture. We shared similar fields of interest. What started as simple study sessions turned into dates. Imagine my surprise when she tells me she's the daughter of a known politician."

Gregorio proudly smiled. "That politician being me. Cruz told me she found her soulmate and begged me to meet Louis."

"Yes, and then the three of us met over dinner," Louis delved into their backstory. "What started as pleasant conversations later turned into heated debates. Cruz ended up getting caught in the middle of our disputes."

"You just couldn't handle someone who had different viewpoints from yours, Louis."

Louis scoffed. "More like I disagreed with some of your extremist viewpoints. I also didn't appreciate having your daughter involved in our debates."

Cruz quickly got in between Louis and Gregorio's exchange. "Please, not here, you two."

Upon hearing Louis's backstory, Haru remembered being in a similar situation. She saw herself through Louis. Gregorio and Cruz reminded her of her own father and Sugimura. However, she could discern from Cruz's demeanor that she wasn't a controlling abuser like Sugimura. Cruz seemed to have genuine and affectionate love for Louis.

"Louis…" Haru whispered to him.

"It's ok, Haru," Louis smiled at her before shifting an intense gaze toward Gregorio. "I don't want any trouble tonight on this fine evening." He then put an arm around Makoto and Haru. "My friends and I are here to have a good time."

As she saw Louis embracing the two ladies, Cruz lowered her eyes.

"Louis," Cruz murmured as her soft tone drew her old flame's attention for a moment. "I thought everything had gone as planned. I...I looked forward to our marriage and being your wife."

"I know, and there's no doubt you've been a wonderful wife, but there was no way your father and I could mend our differences over political matters. Besides, I'm just not cut out for the world of politics, which is already marred with corruption within the system."

Gregorio smirked. "Only because a bleeding heart can't handle the cutthroat nature of the political realm."

"That's enough, father," Cruz pleaded as she extended her hand to Louis. "If we're still not going to marry each other, then could I ask for a dance? This once?"

As he stared at Cruz's hand offer, Louis didn't know what to say. He had broken ties with her and Gregorio sometime ago. He glanced over to his friends. Then, he passionately eyed Makoto and Haru.

"Whatever you do, we won't hold it against you," Haru softly smiled as if giving him some encouragement.

Makoto merely shrugged. "It's your call, but we don't really expect you to cozy up with them again."

Taking his girlfriends' suggestions to heart, Louis walked beside Makoto and Haru. He took their hands and smiled.

"Sorry, but I already came with dates, Gregorio. You're going to have to do better than convincing your daughter she still has a chance with me."

Gregorio scoffed. "You haven't changed."

"I still won't forget the dances we had together, Cruz," Louis put on a collective demeanor as he walked away with Makoto and Haru.

"Just a minute, Louis," Gregorio was heard growling until Cruz calmed her father down. The scowl on his face was replaced with a calm smile. "I suggest none of you and your friends go anywhere. Unless you'd like to know about that invite we sent you to your mailing addresses."

The Phantom Thieves and the Revenants fell silent once Gregorio brought this to their attention.

"Yes, I take it that by silence you know what I'm referring to," Gregorio chuckled. "Please, this way." He showed the Thieves and Revenants toward the nearest balcony.

"Hey, where are Louis and the others going with Gregorio and his people?" Karen noticed the large group heading for the outside balcony.

"Shall we go see?" Aurora suggested as they followed the groups.

The Spiritual Gamblers watched their friends leave when the Thieves and the Revenants followed Gregorio and Cruz outside.

"Hey, where the hell are they going?" Mary wondered, keenly observing their friends heading outside the balcony.

"Beats me. I don't like this," Ryōta whispered.

"Ooooo, whatever it is should be interesting," Yumeko smirked.

Just then, Kirari, Ririka, and Sayaka walked by and turned to meet the Spiritual Gamblers.

"Oh, hi, Kirari! You're looking beautiful tonight," Yumeko acknowledged the Momobami clan leader.

"Thank you, dear Yumeko, but don't think you're going to be left," Kirari whispered to Yumeko and her friends. "After all, we three are Consortium members."

"Yeah, we know" Mary frowned, briefly making glances toward Ririka, who looked away. "Hey, you're still hiding behind your sister, Ririka. Where's that spine I thought you had?"

Hearing this, Ririka scowled. "I'm… not afraid…"

"Then, speak up. We know you're involved with this group. Tell us what you know," Mary demanded.

Kirari answered for her sister. "What else is there to tell you? We're elite members of the Consortium. We're involved with the negotiations and business handlings for the organization."

"Ooo, sounds intriguing and what else do you do?" Yumeko curiously asked her gambling rival.

"Yeah, what about that stuff with those creatures in Akihabara?"

"That doesn't concern us," Sayaka stated. "We know nothing about what goes on with the Consortium's science division. That's being headed by Mido."

"Is that true?" Mary asked Ririka, who nodded in response.

"Yeah, and we have nothing to do with Mido."

"There you have it. Our hands are clean regarding that incident," Kirari said. "Now, if you'll excuse us. Next time we meet, I hope you'll have your Guardian Spirits ready." She waved off the Spiritual Gamblers as she, Ririka, and Sayaka went to meet with the others on the balcony.

The Spiritual Gamblers cautiously watched them leave. Having heard this, Yumeko became more intrigued with the Consortium.

"That arrogant woman. I swear I intend to take her down one way or another," Terano openly vowed, watching Kirari and her two cohorts heading toward the outside balcony.

"I don't fucking like this," Midari crudely remarked.

"There has to be more with the Consortium than we're being led to believe. Even if Kirari, Ririka, and Sayaka have nothing to do with the Akihabara incident, then what do they hope to gain from being with this group?" Itsuki wondered about their involvement.

Mary scoffed. "Simple. Money. That's what it's all about."

Yumeko wore a sadistic grin. "Yes, let's have a spectacular rematch with our faithful spirits. My Nine Tails is so excited to play with your peacock, Momobami Kirari."

Outside on the balcony, the Phantom Thieves and the Revenants met with Gregorio and Cruz. Also joining the politician and his daughter were Mido, Kirari, Ririka, Sayaka, Joselyn, and Carolyn. Karen and Aurora ultimately joined up with the Thieves and Revenants to hear Gregorio and his group's statement.

"The invites were sent by us. So glad you could join us, Phantom Thieves," Gregorio addressed Ren and his group.

"Hold on, you know we're the Phantom Thieves?!" Yusuke was taken aback.

"No effin' way you'd know who we are!" Ryuji angrily protested. "What? Did you send spies on us?"

"No, because they're the ones we've been pursuing the whole time," Ren stated as his frown faded, quickly replaced with his Joker-esque smile. "Isn't that correct? The Consortium?"

Kirari calmly chuckled. "The Consortium has been watching you since last year, my friends. And don't forget about our meeting at the AnimeJapan convention, Phantom Thieves and associates. We had so much fun playing with you in our tournament. By the way, we recorded your matches and sent them to our Consortium colleagues here. After watching your performances, Gregorio became more interested in meeting you."

Makoto scowled toward Kirari. "So, you recorded us without our consent."

"Of course, I did, Officer Niijima. Ultimately, I did it so my colleagues can assess your strategies and how effectively you work in teams. And with how you and your sister Niijima Sae have been furiously trying to reveal our organization's existence, it was only a matter of time before you found us out. Gregorio figured it was time for the Consortium to leave the shadows."

"So, what now? You know their identities and analyze our strategies. You're going to reveal to the world who they are?" Skyler confronted the Consortium with important queries.

"Don't be silly, boy," Mido replied. "The Phantom Thieves's identities shall remain secret to the public. After all, they are Tokyo's famed urban legends."

Gregorio walked over and confronted Ren. "It's also interesting to see you've befriended Skyler and Louis. Their little group has turned to you to help deal with the recent supernatural events." He extended a hand to the Phantom Thief. "Amamiya-Takamaki Ren, it's truly an honor to meet the leader of the Phantom Thieves of Hearts. I know you're the one who helped jumpstart the Phantom Thieves movement and amassed like-minded individuals to join your cause to battle the wrongdoings caused by the corrupted system created by Shido and the Antisocial Force." He kept his hand out waiting for Ren to shake his hand. He noticed Ren being surrounded by the other Phantom Thieves.

The Phantom Thieves gave serious and almost intimidating glares at Gregorio. The large man maintained his stance against their piercing glares and lowered his hand.

"So, you've been documenting us for a while. Then, you're aware of what we've done a few years ago?" Ren asked Gregorio.

"By changing people's hearts and bringing down a shadow organization who've attempted to corrupt the Japanese political system. The Consortium is well aware. We know you've recently been dealing with a spread of supernatural entities beyond human comprehension." Gregorio pointed out the Phantom Thieves' previous accomplishments. "You've etched your names as urban legends in the eyes of the public."

Hifumi whispered to Skyler. "I'm amazed he knows all of this if my and Io's combined power unknowingly brought him, his daughter, and you guys from your original dimension to this one."

Io added. "And I can confirm Gregorio, Cruz, and Mido's memories haven't returned."

Maintaining his gaze on Gregorio, Skyler muttered. "Well, Shin-Io's power altered reality. So doing so altered his memories and somehow while being part of the Consortium he learned about Ren and his group after hearing of their accomplishments."

"How is it that they don't have memories of their original dimension like you and the others, Skyler?"

"That's a good question because they'd immediately recognize us if they had their memories restored. Somehow, Io's presence didn't trigger any inklings of memories," the Revenant theorized while trying to fit the pieces together.

Hearing this, Io nodded. "It's as I've already said. I don't know why they don't have their memories restored."

Louis reassured the pale Revenant. "Don't worry too much, Io. We'll figure it out as everything naturally plays out."

"So, it's true that Gregorio and his daughter don't have their memories? That's very strange," Karen asserted.

"Shouldn't all of us from our original dimension have our memories back when Io appeared here?" Aurora speculated.

"That's something that befuddles me. Why are those two and Mido without their full memories?" Louis said.

The Phantom Thieves and the Revenants were left mulling how to best deal with the Consortium, even though the group already reassured them they'd conceal their secret identities from the public.

"So, what about you?" Yakumo addressed Mido. "Have you got anything to say for yourself?"

Taken aback by Yakumo's direct remark, Mido calmly responded. "Whatever do you mean? What is there for me to say? I'm merely the head of the Consortium's science division."

"Then, those people who were turned into experiments came directly from you?" Louis asked him.

Adjusting his glasses, Mido shook his head and sighed dismissively. "I've had to cut loose someone who worked irresponsibly in my division. It's such a shame. He yielded some great research and produced some intriguing human hybrids but his methods were too inhumane. I couldn't afford to keep someone with selfish ambitions in my division. By the way, it has been a while, hasn't it, Louis?"

"Yeah," Louis slightly furrowed his brow.

"I remember you saw me as a mentor figure during your time in college. You asked me a lot of intriguing questions regarding humanity and free will."

"Have you given them any more thought?"

"I have and thanks to you I've seen more value in human potential. Humanity is meant to evolve and move forward, not regress. If we remain where we are in our current state, humanity will not be ready for the next mass extinction crisis. I've also learned that human cognition has unlimited potential I never thought was possible," Mido explained. "Yes, thanks to you, Louis, I've given more time to reevaluate my professional work and personal life."

Hearing this, Louis nodded and sighed with relief. "I'm glad to hear this. Though, I hope you don't intend to allow any more human experimentations in your division. It's morally wrong."

"Would you prefer animal experimentation? Because Eon here wouldn't like that," Mido said while stroking the hoatzin's feathered head.

"No more inhumane experiments of any kind. Just find and conduct other scientific research and don't hire cruel people in your department anymore."

"Very well, Louis. I'll keep that in mind," Mido genuinely smiled.

Karen patted Louis' shoulder. "Well said."

Aurora added. "If his memories never return, I think I'll prefer this harmless Mido more."

Cautiously eyeing Mido, Yakumo scoffed under his breath. "He still makes my skin crawl."

"Hello? Ah, there you are, Togo Hifumi," a voice that Hifumi and Skyler recognized interjected. The source of this voice belonged to Nakamura Miki, who walked in between Carolyn and Jocelyn.

"Miki?!" Hifumi and Skyler exclaimed in shock.

"You two know her?" Makoto asked them.

"Yes, she's a renowned shogi champion like me and we've interacted a few times. She visited my school and played against me once," Hifumi revealed.

"Whoa, one of the country's top shogi champions is here?!" Futaba yelled.

"Yes, I've heard about Nakamura Miki. Her genius intellect has propelled her into celebrity status in the realm of shogi," Yusuke elaborated.

"Good evening to you all. So, these are your friends, Miss Hifumi?" Miki queried.

"Tell me. Are you involved with the Consortium?"

"Why yes. I'm their newest member. It's been intriguing to interact with elite members of society but none of them excites me more than playing with you, Miss Hifumi."

"You're probably better off not affiliating with them, Miki," Skyler suggested. When he and Hifumi approached Miki, Carolyn and Jocelyn got in their way.

"I'd advise you not to take a step closer toward Miss Nakamura," Carolyn warned them.

"Unless you're asking for trouble," Jocelyn fiercely glared at Skyler and Hifumi.

"It's ok, you two. Stand down," Miki beckoned her guardians. "I apologize on their behalf. Jocelyn and Sister Carolyn are the Consortium's mercenaries and have been assigned to protect me. However, since you two are friends of mine, I can tell them to allow you permittance to see me."

"I wish you could've told them that sooner," Skyler said, closely watching Carolyn and Jocelyn.

"Allow me to introduce our two mercenaries: Jocelyn Feles and Carolyn Angelsmith," Gregorio revealed the ladies' names.

"I guess powerful politicians still need their hired guns to keep them alive," Louis sardonically remarked, drawing Jocelyn and Carolyn's attention away from Skyler and Hifumi.

"Louis, how rude. You two may not get along, but that is my father you're disparaging," Cruz reproved his sarcasm.

"I…I didn't mean... Sorry…" Louis apologetically replied.

"Now, is there anything else you'd like to know about the Consortium? The night is still young," Gregorio said, awaiting any more inquiries from the Thieves and Revenants.

"I do believe they've exhausted all of their questions, Gregorio," Mido keenly observed the group.

"I have a few more," Ren addressed them. "What do you know about the Yami Matter? Are you the ones manipulating its activities and giving orders to the Vamkyries?"

Before anyone could confirm this, a loud commotion erupted followed by glass shattering and an explosion disrupting the party. The Phantom Thieves, the Revenants, and the Consortium quickly diverted their attention toward the chaotic disruption and the guests' screams coming out of the ballroom.

"What the hell just happened?!" Yakumo exclaimed.

"I don't know but we need to check this out!" Louis declared.

"Let's get moving!" Makoto shouted. "Find and get any bystanders you can find to safety!"

As Ren turned away from the Consortium, Ann grabbed his arm.

"Let's go, Ren."

"Right," Ren said, briefly exchanging glances with the Consortium.

"We have nothing to do with whatever's caused this sudden attack. We will leave you to handle this crisis," Gregorio said.

Miki approached Hifumi and Skyler. "Be careful, you two, ok? I need you alive so we can have our rematch, Miss Hifumi."

"Of course," Hifumi smiled.

"We have to hurry. This way!" Io called over to Hifumi and Skyler.

As the Thieves and Revenants stormed back into the ballroom, the Consortium stayed on the balcony and observed them.

"Mr. Silva, should we assist the Thieves and their associates?" Jocelyn asked as a crimson whip magically appeared in her hands.

"It would be prudent to find out who caused this sudden attack," Carolyn suggested as a grimoire appeared under her left arm. She quickly opened it and prepared to invoke mystic power.

"That won't be necessary, you two. Let's leave it to them to handle this," Gregorio said.

"I hope Louis and the others will be ok," Cruz muttered, clamping her hands and praying for her ex and his friends.

"We could assist them, Kirari," Ririka asked her sister.

"It'll be fine. Yumeko and her friends will be there when the Thieves and Revenants need them," Kirari reassured Ririka.

"I suppose we'll just stand by and watch," Mido added, nonchalantly shrugging.

Meanwhile, as guests fled in terror from the attack, the terrorists revealed themselves to everyone still present. The five terrorists scoured the destruction they caused. As many guests already fled, some left behind were scared stiff to move, others found spaces to hide behind, and a few bystanders stayed behind to try to stop the terrorists. Among those who stayed behind were the Spiritual Gamblers, the Advent Eight, Sasha & her family, Ayana, and Kara.

Having invoked their Metaverse and Revenant battle forms, the Phantom Thieves and the Vein Remnants entered the ballroom and spaced the five intruders. Much to their relief, thankfully no innocent civilians were hurt or killed.

The first of the five terrorists is a 6'2-foot tall Egyptian man with short faded black hair and pyrite eyes. He is seen garbed in a black robe trimmed with gold and bandages covering his body. He also has on a dull gold pharaoh's helmet adorning his head.

The second terrorist is a 6'0-foot tall Caucasian man with short faded brown hair and clear blue eyes. He has on a black and steel blue-trimmed outfit with tinges of electricity bathing over his body. He then fitted a silver mask over his face.

The third terrorist is a 5'8-foot tall Caucasian woman with back-length dark blonde hair and sky blue eyes. She is seen wearing a revealing garnet and black body armor; the armor itself covered primarily her chest, leaving her neck & collar area, stomach, and abdominal skin areas exposed. She also has on an armored dress going down to her upper thighs, armor knee guards, and ankle-length armored footwear. Adorning her wrists are small garnet bands. A silver four-spiked crown helmet adorned her forehead with a garnet cem centered in the middle of the crown's two spikes. Protruding from her back are a pair of garnet and black feathered wings.

The fourth terrorist is a 5'6-foot tall Zapotec woman with long, back-length navy blue hair, two braided bangs on the sides of her face, and copper skin. Her outfit is a sleek and revealing peridot armor with no bodily covering underneath. Her peridot armor covers primarily the chest and shoulders, exposing her collar, stomach, abdominal, and belly button. No armor is covering her arms. She has wristbands with elaborately designed rhombus shapes. She also has a short navy blue armored skirt trimmed with peridot and tufts of pink feathered filaments sticking at the top of the skirt. She's also seen wearing ankle-length peridot and navy blue armored footwear with pink feathers sticking at the top. Adorning her head is a peridot crown with four peridot rhombus-shaped feather designs, two on each side. Sprouting from her back are black feathered wings trimmed with navy blue.

The fifth terrorist is the shortest member of the five-person group, standing 5'5-feet tall. She closely resembled Cammy Hino, right down to sharing her face, likeness, and long, back-length black hair. However, her eyes, unlike Cammy's, are vermillion and filled with malice. Appearing the least imposing of the five, she is seen garbed in a black kimono with a dark gold waist belt and purple hair ribbons. However, despite her lesser imposing presence, she gave off sinister vibes. Cammy could sense a malevolent power emanating from her strange lookalike. At that moment, a black aura erupted from the woman and formed into a fiery cloak that resembled a nine-headed bird.

"What the hell?! There's five of 'em!" Skull exclaimed.

"Who the hell are they?!" Queen wondered.

"They're a new enemy sent by the Yami Matter," Moonlight revealed. "I sense the Yami Matter's presence here!"

Sion growled. "That's all the confirmation we need to know."

"Look up there, guys!" Oracle pointed toward the ceiling as black matter formed in the ceiling.

Emerging from the Yami Matter mass were three Vamkyries. Their dreadful and incessant laughter filled the ballroom. The Thieves, the Revenants, the Gamblers, and the Advent Eight immediately discerned these three being Vamkyries but they haven't seen this trio before until now.

The three Vamkyries landed beside the five terrorists.

"So, you're responsible for this!" Joker called out on the three Vamkyries.

"Guys! I saw them launch the attack from outside!" Mona called out as he hurried toward the Thieves. "They were quick. Luckily, I was small enough to bypass the crowds!"

"Mona!" Mircalla and Panther yelled out as the cat pounced next to them.

"We know you're Vamkyries. So, who do we call you three?" Sion asked, readily drawing out his Queenslayer Blade and Hanemukuro.

The tall, muscular Vamkyrie flexed and posed. "Göndul the Masculine Vamkyrie, come forth and face my wrath."

The feminine warrior elegantly posed. "I am Skögul the Feminine Vamkyrie. My elegant beauty hath no equal."

The short-stature runt jumped up and postured. "Thou may refer to me as Mist the Shroud Vamkyrie! Dost not underestimate me!"

"And our accomplices behind us art called the Black Heralds," Skögul chortled. "They shalt help us end thee all here."

"We aren't going anywhere until we kick you all out," Joker readied his dagger and gun.

"Yes, you weren't invited to this event. So, prepare to be removed by force," Tennyo brandished her ko-naginata.

Suddenly, Cammy collapsed on her knees, prompting Lance to check on her.

"Cammy, that girl who looks like you is bothering you a lot. Do you know her?" Lance asked her.

"I… I've never met her but she feels so familiar to me," Cammy palmed her forehead and grimaced. "Her aura and power are just like mine though but darker and full of malicious intent. Her darkness feels like the Yami Matter. We have to help the Phantom Thieves and the Vein Remnants because these Black Heralds are bad news."

Tori nodded. "Don't worry we will."

"Well then! Let us get this evening massacre started!" Göndul declared as she, Skögul, Mist, and the Black Heralds spread out to attack the Thieves and the Vein Remnants first.

"Sis, if you can hear, start getting these guests out here!" Queen called out to Sae, who started by getting Yoshida and a few others out of the ballroom. She briefly paused, noticing Karen and Aurora were gone.

"Nadia and Anastasia, get some of these civilians out," Moonlight requested the Elven Princesses.

"Of course!" The Elven Princesses nodded as they gathered some ballroom guests and escorted them from the premises.

"Yumeko, you and your friends get these bystanders out of here!" Joker instructed the Compulsive Gambler and her friends, which they did while the Phantom Thieves and Vein Remnants engaged the Vamkyries and the Black Heralds in a ballroom brawl.

A/N: To kick off this chapter, we have the other half of the Phantom Thief/Revenant teams taking on the Kunekune, a Japanese urban myth that's similar to Slender Man (of the same creepypasta meme name). Kunekune gets taken out in typical MOTW fashion. In the end, this is just to showcase the cast tackling non-Yami Matter side missions.

Our gang then discusses receiving the invites that the Consortium sent them. There's speculation to be had and our characters still haven't figured out their identities. Even to the point where Makoto and her sister can't trace their origins. Some more movie talk. Originally, there were going to be brief theater scenes of a few of the characters seeing Detective Pikachu and Godzilla: King of the Monsters, but Ford decided to nix this original concept. There'll be at least one theater get-together left, but that's many chapters away.

The big moment you've been waiting for: the Phantom Thieves and the Revenants/Vein Remnants meet the Consortium. Naturally, this is a shock for our characters. However, as you can probably ascertain, the Consortium confronts the Thieves and knows of their identities. However, unlike the jerks associated with Shido, this antagonistic group deliberately decided against giving away the Thieves' identities to the general public. This act differentiates them from Shido and the Antisocial Force, who were mostly a bunch of mustache-twirling villains. Gregorio exhibits some modicum of respect for Ren and the Thieves.

Although Gregorio, Cruz, and Mido have not regained their memories, we've yet to see what'll happen when/if they do remember about their past lives. That will affect certain allegiances.

Speaking of Consortium members, Hifumi and Skyler are shocked Miki is a member. Although, as far we're concerned, there's no beef between them. That said, Miki wants another duel with Hifumi. Then, we have Jocelyn and Sister Carolyn, who come sporting magic items. Hmm, how soon could we see them in action?

Additionally, yeah Louis and Cruz were an item. Their relationship might come off like Code Geass's Suzaku and Euphemia. Unfortunately, all it takes are political differences to end a relationship. However, Louis didn't lose out as he gained two girlfriends for the price of one: Makoto and Haru.

Then, we have the party crashers: the three remaining Vamkyries who've yet to fight our heroes and now we have a new band of Yami Matter mercenaries called the Black Heralds. Of the Heralds, the one with that black phoenix gives Cammy terrible vibes. The official names and references of these fives will be revealed in the next chapter of this two-parter.

Also note, this isn't an official Yami Matter Event. Otherwise, someone would've said so.

And that's it for this chapter commentary. The next chapter will indeed be a ballroom brawl. Until then, send a review and see you soon!
