Hey, Dark Gothic Lolita here!
So I come bearing you a gift with a new story! Have no fear, it's a pretty short one, it won't drag on for too long. I'm also still writing my other stories, so don't think I've abandoned them. BASICALLY, this pairing comes from a new story that I started writing (one day I'll stop, but not today) and I wrote Invel x Juvia as a basic side fling that wasn't going anywhere. But I've always wanted to write for them!
So then there was this prompt taken from Tumblr that was then posted on Twitter and FantasticNic said that the perfect couple to go with this prompt would be Invel and Juvia! It was perfect, so I started plotting right away and here we are! The trope is: I've lost my memories and IDK who you are, but I feel like I'm supposed to trust you. To which someone said that's all well and good, but make it WRONG. The trope: Person 1: "I don't know what it is about you...I just know that I can trust you. Person 2 *literally their worst enemy* "Excuse me, what?"
You know the drill guys. I don't own Fairy Tail because I can't draw. Please forgive my poor grammar and spelling, I'm not feeling so hot right now...Well I am actually. I have a damn fever.
ENJOY!
Forgetting to remember
Chapter one
Juvia stirred awake. She hissed in pain as she grabbed her side and sat up slowly, tears almost welling up in the corner of her eyes. What the hell had happened to her? Why was she so injured? Who did this to her?
"Oh Juvia, you're finally awake!"
A young blue haired teen bounced into the room with a flying cat behind her. Juvia slowly nodded, her voice not quite working yet as she smiled slightly when the younger girl was smiling. She seemed to be fussing over her, making sure that she wasn't bleeding through the bandages. Juvia relaxed. The younger blue haired mage had a healing touch and it made Juvia sigh in relief.
The girl seemed to notice and couldn't help but beam at her. "You really had us worried, you know? You were losing so much blood, I'd never seen that much come out of someone before. I was so scared." The grip on Juvia's arm seemed to tighten.
Juvia could feel her throat clogging up with emotion. She was upset. She could hear the girl's voice cracking and that was the last thing that Juvia wanted. Even the cat seemed to be giving Juvia an extremely worried look. Juvia was surprised at the cat's presence, especially as she was wearing clothes.
"If it weren't for my precognition, we wouldn't have gotten to you in time. You're lucky we found you when we did. A second later and..."
The words didn't need to be said for Juvia to understand. She almost died and it would seem like she really owed it to them for bringing her from the brink of death. However, she was slightly put out that the cat could talk and that she had powers of precognition, but at least it was used to aid her. She felt indebted to them.
"But we found you and that's all that matters now," the girl said, smiling through unshed tears. Juvia gave a light smile and nodded her head. She tested her voice out again, but it still wasn't ready, so she decided to pat the healer's head instead. That seemed to be the right gesture as the girl giggled and Juvia gave a satisfied smile. The white cat then started flying around.
"Water child, she needs water! She must be so parched and barely able to talk!"
The human of the pair scrambled around when she realised how right she was and Juvia watched them in amusement. She was glad that the cat had realised how thirsty she was. Why exactly was her throat so scratchy anyway? What kind of trouble had she gotten herself into?
She saw a flash of light blue hair flash through her mind and it actually hurt. She grunted in discomfort and held her hand to her head. Narrowing her eyes in pain, she looked up to see that the other two hadn't seen her reaction and she wanted to keep it that way. She didn't need them freaking out.
The guilt would continue to suffocate her. They had already done so much for her and she didn't want it to seem like she still wasn't properly healed. They would waste their time and efforts to look after her further and she didn't want that.
There was a knock at the door and all three of them turned their heads at the sound. A blonde haired woman stuck her hair around the door and Juvia watched as her eyes brightened when they made eye contact. Juvia smiled politely at the girl and Wendy handed her some water. She nodded in thanks and the girl who seemed to be her age opened the door wider and a few people poured into the room.
The blonde was followed by a pink haired guy, a blue cat, a red headed woman and a dark haired guy. They all had their own bandages on their bodies, but they seemed excited to see her. The dark haired mage came to her bed first and the rest followed behind him and Juvia sipped on her water as she waited for them to speak. She almost rolled her eyes at how deliciously good the water tasted, it was that refreshing.
"It's so good to see you awake. You took your time, huh?"
Juvia could hear the humour but could also sense the melancholy in his face and she gave him a stiff shrug, but managed to widen her smile. That's all she had been doing since she woke up. Smiling. She almost felt like she was being fake, but the water was helping with her extremely dry throat. She'll be able to talk soon.
Everyone was helping her to feel comfortable which she really appreciated, but she felt somewhat uncomfortable. She cleared her throat and grabbed their attention. They were watching her bright eyes, happy that she was finally going to speak.
"Ano, who are you all?"
~x~
Yes she remembered her name. Yes she knows she's a water mage. Hell, she even saw Gajeel there in the guild hall, but this wasn't their guild hall. Why was she with Fairy Tail? What happened to Phantom Lord and Master Jose?
"I'm sorry, I don't remember joining this guild."
When she had been able to move, she was moved to the guild hall to see if she could remember anyone's face. Gajeel was the only person she remembered and she relaxed greatly when she saw him.
The blonde was the one who then spoke up. "Do you remember kidnapping me? It was back when you were in Phantom Lord, right before you joined us."
Juvia frowned. She did what?! Why in the hell did she do that?! She glanced over at Gajeel who wore a neutral look on his face, but she knew him. That was his guilty face. It was clearly the reason why they were no longer in Phantom. She looked over at Lucy and shook her head. Everyone started mumbling and she wanted to shrink into herself. They were clearly displeased with her. She looked over at Gajeel who was walking towards her. He stood in front of her to protect her.
"Stop making her panic, can't you see she ain't in the mood for all your yapping?"
Juvia relaxed a little bit, but was curious as to how their friendship had gotten better. Gajeel never outright protected her like this in Phantom, he did it behind the scenes. She watched as an old and very short man made his way towards her and she recognised him to be Makarov, the guild master. She was practically honoured to be part of his guild that she almost bowed to him.
He sighed but smiled. "My child, we're having Porlyusica come down and check you out and see if there's anything we can do. For now though...Mest?"
A black haired man nodded and came towards them. Gajeel stepped aside but still stayed close by. Juvia wanted to move back. It was a habit of hers. Anyone brand new that approached her, she would usually be on the defence. The only reason she hadn't done so with the younger blue haired girl (she found out her name was Wendy and they were NOT long lost siblings) was because she was smiley and also younger than her. She wasn't wicked enough to attack a 13 year old.
Mest seemed to sense this and kept his distance. He managed to give her a smile. "Hi Juvia, my name's Mest and I'm a memory mage. Unfortunately, because it wasn't magic that caused you to lose your memories, I can't directly help you with your memory. From the sounds of things, you remember everything from before Fairy Tail, correct?"
Juvia nodded her head and Mest continued. "So that would mean that you have retrograde amnesia. It starts with your more recent memories being lost and then it will slowly take away your childhood memories too."
Juvia shrugged a little bit with a small smile. "That's okay, it's not something I want to remember much of anyway. I just feel bad that I won't be able to remember you guys. What about new memories? Can I create them?"
The man nodded instantly. He clearly knew his stuff. "Yes, with a bit of difficulty. Porlyusica and I will start working on some medication in order to get your memories back. At the same time, we might have to look at your damaged hippocampus. That's where memories are stored."
Juvia gingerly touched the back of her head, not really knowing where her hippocampus was and she cringed when she could feel a lump there. Why was everyone battered and bruised? It didn't make any sense. Could she really trust these people? Well, if Gajeel was here, it was probably okay.
She mentally sighed at her predicament and saw Wendy frown as she walked up to her. "I'm sorry I couldn't be of any help to get your memories back. I'm useless."
Now Juvia was frowning. Is everyone really sure that this young teen isn't her long lost sister or something? They were the same when it came to self deprecation. She hesitantly placed her hand on her shoulder and Wendy glanced up at her. Juvia did her best to put on an encouraging face. It had been a while since she had to do this. She was used to doing this with Raios, Gajeel's younger sworn brother. She wondered how he was doing if their guild had disbanded. Did he not come with them?
"No Wendy, you did great. This damage is in my brain and you weren't to expect it. Don't sell yourself short, you healed my side and you probably healed everyone else as well. You've done so much."
Wendy smiled at the support that she was getting but dimmed a little. "But you don't remember us at all."
Juvia shook her head. "Only Gajeel-kun. I'm sorry for being a burden. How long was I out for?"
"You're not a burden, my child. But you've been out for a month."
Juvia's eyes widened in surprise when Makarov answered the question, but she was still calm about it. That was also one thing that worried everyone. Juvia was too calm and it was eerie. Juvia was supposed to be crazy and bubbly and all over the place while she schemed on a new way to get Gray to say that he loved her too. Instead, she stood with her arms crossed over her chest, heavy lidded eyes that seemed to watch out for any potential danger. As much as she looked mentally exhausted, she still looked like she would put anyone in their place if they tried to mess with her.
She then looked up and realised something. She squinted in confusion before looking over at Gajeel. "Is the rain...gone?"
He grinned at her with a nod of the head. "Yep."
Juvia's eyes widened as she could feel her heart picking up in speed. She let out a genuine smile and not the robotic one that she had been feeding everyone else. "Wow, the rain stopped...was it because I joined this guild?"
Erza nodded with a smile. "It stopped because you met Gray here."
She turned her head towards the shirtless man who seemed to be blushing heavily and scowling at Erza for giving her such information. He didn't seem to be too happy that Erza had told him that, but Juvia rolled it off. She put it down to embarrassment for being put in the limelight. She bowed to Gray and then the rest of the guild.
"Thank you. The rain has always been a nuisance and to know that it's gone...it's a beautiful feeling. I'm sorry. I know I've already experienced the sun, but I've forgotten it. I want to go outside and enjoy it now. Am I able to do so?"
Makarov smiled and nodded his head as everyone moved out of the way. Erza was soon by her side, almost as if she were escorting her outside. Juvia had half a mind to tell her she wants to go by herself, but she just decided to drop it. Seeing as it was only Erza coming out with her, she didn't say anything about wanting to be alone. Maybe she didn't need to be alone right now.
She stepped outside and released a gasp at how warm the sun felt. She couldn't believe it! She was actually being blinded by the sun! She giggled and turned to see Erza watching her. Was she judging her? No, she was smiling at her, excited for her. Juvia opened her arms wide in excitement as if she wanted the sun to land on her and Erza burst out laughing at this.
"I wasn't there to see you appreciate the sun the first time. I'm happy to see you happy, Juvia-chan."
There was a tone of endearment in her voice and Juvia felt warm. Maybe she could come to trust these people. They genuinely seemed worried for her, unlike how they would have acted in Phantom. She actually felt like she could relax here, despite not knowing them. Well, remembering them.
"Thank you, Erza-san."
Erza nodded her head. "I hope that there will be some potion that will help heal you. We're a lot closer than that honorific."
Juvia nodded her head before closing her eyes to feel the sun on her face. As she did that, she had another flash memory. She saw the back of what seemed to be a man with the same powder blue hair and a trench coat that matched the colour of his hair, but also looked like he had splattered white paint on it.
"Ugh."
She bent forward, her single hand cradling her head. She wasn't so lucky this time, she caught someone's attention. Erza was immediately by her side, a comforting hand on her shoulder as she had worry in her veins.
"Juvia, are you okay?"
Juvia slowly nodded so that she didn't aggravate her head. "I-I think so. I just..."
She hadn't seen the said man in the guild and wasn't sure if he just wasn't in today. After all, it looked like they had gotten into a big fight. She didn't want to go and look for him if he was busy healing up.
"Just pieces of my childhood coming to me."
Erza nodded a little bit and Juvia felt relieved that she bought the lie. She didn't even know why she was lying, they all seemed like very nice people. Soon she yawned and stretched out her limbs.
"Are you okay?"
"Hmm? Yes, I'm just a little tired. Will I be able to go home, or do you think that I'll have to stay here for the meantime?"
"You'll have to ask Wendy and Mest. They've probably sent a message to Porlyusica and then she'll examine you."
"She's a doctor?"
"Yes, she's Fairy Tail's healer. Wendy is our on-site healer. She's a wind dragon slayer."
Juvia's eyes popped out of her head. "She is?! She's just like Gajeel-kun! He must be so happy to meet someone else like him!"
Juvia was excited for her friend and Erza chuckled. "Yes, he does take care of her quite a bit. Natsu is a fire dragon slayer."
Juvia gasped, but there was happiness in her eyes. "They're like a little family."
Erza hummed and leaned her head up towards the sun. "We all are here. We're all a family, one that you're part of as well. Even if you're unable to remember, we will try to make new memories with you. We'll be here for you."
Juvia glanced over at Erza and noticed how beautiful she was in person. Everyone knew about Erza Scarlet, Fairy Tail's Titania. To think she was in a guild with such a strong woman and they seemed to be very good friends, Juvia couldn't help but smile and nod her head.
"Thank you, Erza-chan."
Erza beamed at her before she pushed herself off of the wall. She looked delighted that Juvia had called her 'Erza-chan.' "Come, let's head back inside. Maybe you should shower and I could get you some clean clothes."
"Please do. I stink."
Juvia had decided to take a walk around town, just to try and see if anything about Magnolia was in her memory. She had only been to Magnolia once, back in the beginning of her Phantom Lord days, but she hadn't been there at any other time. People were smiling and waving at her and she gave them all small smiles, not at all remembering a single one of them. It felt so odd that they were waving and smiling at her as if she hadn't made anyone's life a misery with her rain. It felt...good. She was excited with this new life that she had made for herself.
She didn't know what it was that led her so far out, but as she did, she could feel the temperature dropping with every step she took. She wore her usual outfit that was designed for the cold weather and despite it being uncomfortably cold, there was something familiar about it. Something that reminded her of her past.
That was enough motivation to keep pushing on. There were less and less houses and then snow started to fall around her. She shivered ever so slightly, rubbing her hands together to try and keep warm. The harsh and bitter wind battered her face relentlessly as she tried to wonder where sudden snow had come from. Still, she was determined to make it through to the end. There was magic in the air, signalling that there was someone like her. Someone who brought snow with them instead of rain.
"Hello?!"
Her voice echoed out on the snowy plain as she got no response. She couldn't see where the cause of the snow was. Were they alright? Were they hurt? Were they alone? Something pinched at Juvia's heart, almost as if she could understand their pain. She could feel the bitterness and anger within the snow and she wanted to see if she could ease their pain. She didn't know why it should be her, but she wanted to let them know they're not alone and one day, their snow could fade away too.
She kept on going, until she could see a lone house. The snow fell at its heaviest there and the wind blew horribly. It looked like the house was in the middle of a blizzard. Juvia paused, wondering if she would even be welcomed. What if they wanted to be left alone? Still, she was here now and she wanted to know why this snow felt so familiar to her.
It took a lot of effort to fight against the snow. Every few steps, she would get blown backwards. She let out a yelp, but the storm muffled it up. She almost found herself falling to her knees until she felt something grab her arm. She gasped and tried her best to pull away, but she was getting dragged towards the house. She realised that whoever was in the house had sensed her outside and came to help. The snow storm calmed down significantly as she breathed in deep when she got through the threshold of the house.
Looking up, she took a peek at her saviour and she stood still, frozen in place. He seemed to be glaring at her from behind his glasses, as if annoyed that she had interrupted from something important. His red eyes pierced through her as if she were some dirt on his trousers.
Juvia didn't even care that she was being glared at. She was just amazed at the simple fact that the man of her memories was standing right there, in all his pale blue haired glory.
"Can I help you, Juvia?"
She gasped, somewhat surprised that he would know her name. So he is someone in her past! But what was he doing all the way out here, alone? Wasn't he a part of the guild?
"Ano, it really is you..."
An eyebrow was raised, crimson eyes burning into hers. "What are you talking about? Where is Gray, why are you here? Oh I get it. I'm the bad guy who should be in prison, right? You wanted to come and put me there yourself, right?"
Juvia jolted as she frowned at him and her reaction made him hesitate. They were both watching each other oddly, not sure what to do or say. Juvia licked her lips to try to get them wet as they were too dry. She noticed how she hadn't been offered a seat or a towel to dry off. Not like she needed the towel. Still, there was just something enchanting about this man, even if he was lacking in manners.
"What...what are you talking about? Bad guy? Prison? What happened?"
The man's eyes widened before they narrowed in suspicion, as he looked like he was scrutinising her face for any lies. Juvia felt sheepish as she realised that maybe she should have started with the fact that she has some sort of amnesia.
"Sorry! I should have mentioned that I have retrograde amnesia. I'm still not sure about what happened, but I only remember things pre Fairy Tail. You however, kept appearing in my memories and the snow outside felt so familiar...I was just drawn to this place..."
She had a serene smile on her face and the man stood there, surprised. "Retrograde amnesia? Yet...you remember me?"
"Yes, is that weird?"
The mystery mage huffed, rolled his eyes before answering with exasperation. "Yes, because we weren't exactly friends and I'm only someone that appeared recently. You shouldn't be able to remember me if you have retrograde amnesia, it's not logical."
Juvia fidgeted when his eyes wandered all over her body, as if examining her from head to toe. She felt herself grow hot at the amount of attention he was giving her and tried her best not to let it affect her. After all, could anyone blame her? He was quite an attractive man.
"Do you remember my name?"
She shook her head after realising that she really didn't. "No."
"Invel Yura. Will you remember it? I know that you will have a difficult time making new memories."
Juvia shrugged a little too carelessly. "I'll just have to try." She felt
Invel pushed up his glasses by the bridge and gave Juvia a once over again before beckoning for her to come further into the house. She left her shoes at the genkan and followed him closely. At least he was now welcoming to her presence. She couldn't help but smile slightly. He wasn't as mean as he was trying to present himself.
"How's Gray?"
Juvia was puzzled at the question. "Good I guess."
He turned slightly to look over his shoulder, his glittering red eyes piercing through. Juvia almost stumbled behind him. He was so serious and Juvia was a little frustrated that she couldn't even remember him properly.
"You don't know?"
"Of course not. It's not like I follow him everywhere. Unless I do?"
Juvia was so confused. No one had said anything about him being her boyfriend, so she guessed that they weren't a couple. Maybe they were just really good friends, just like she was with Gajeel. She had seen Gajeel hanging around a lot with Levy and she couldn't help but smirk every time she thought of Gajeel having a girlfriend. That was good for him.
"Everyone who knows about Fairy Tail knows that you follow Gray around as if you're some lovesick puppy and to be quite frank, it's disgusting."
Juvia frowned at how harsh he was being with her as she sat down on his sofa. But that also didn't sound like something she would do. She had learned her lesson when she realised that Bora didn't love her the way she thought she loved him. She hadn't done that in the recent weeks since she had woken up, but it did explain why he did throw her curious glances every now and then. It also explained why she had so many dolls in her apartment that looked like him. She had thrown them all out the moment she got home. How creepy.
Invel sighed, pulling her out of her thoughts. "Sorry, I'm just extremely bitter at my defeat to him. I always thought my ice magic was superior. I guess I was taken down a peg and I need to accept that. Anyway, what brings you out here?"
"You."
Invel blinked before pointing at himself and Juvia nodded, before explaining. "Like I said, you kept on crawling into my memories and I knew I had to find you. I randomly found myself around this area and the temperature kept on dropping until it was snowing. The magic felt like someone I know and that's how I found myself here."
Invel continued to stare and Juvia looked down at her hands. "Okay...and you randomly found yourself here?"
"Yes. It's not like I had any leads to go off of finding you. I knew you weren't a part of my guild because I would have seen you after all this time. Still, I was thinking that maybe you were someone important to me from my childhood or something. Your snow...I've felt this before..."
Invel didn't really know how that was possible, considering he had moved to Alvarez when he was young and he had to be at least 10 years older than Juvia. Saying that, she had to be one of the mages who had been frozen in time on Tenrou Island for seven years of her life.
"Is that so? Well, we've never met each other before the war, so I doubt it was me."
Juvia's face contorted into confusion. "War? There was a war and that's where we met?" She huffed and scratched her head. She was so confused, but it made sense as to why everyone was battered on the day she woke up.
She shook her head as if she were heading off topic. "Okay, whatever. Either way, why are you out here by yourself? Don't you have a guild or friends?"
Juvia gauged his reaction and if anything, it looked like he was closing himself off. It was clearly a touchy subject and Juvia knew that he wouldn't want to share any information.
"Now why should I tell you? We're not friends, Juvia."
She flinched at the way he said her name. It was like he was spitting out venom, trying to find a way to hurt her. He was as cold and harsh as his magic that was billowing outside. Juvia felt herself deflate when he spoke, but everything started to make sense. The constant snow outside wasn't because he couldn't control it. No. It was his way of building up walls in order to protect himself.
Juvia dared not speak her mind. She didn't want to hurt his feelings any further and disrespect him. She didn't really understand why she was making it her business, he's a grown man after all. If he wants to live by himself in a snowstorm, then he is more than welcome to do just that. Maybe it was because she understood him a little bit on the surface. It was better to push everyone away instead of having people come into your life and have them ultimately leave in the end.
She glanced up at Invel and nodded at him. "I understand, it's none of my business. I just...I just don't know why I have any memories of you when you're clearly not part of my guild, but I feel like I know you. I couldn't help but worry for you."
She saw Invel pause before he shook his head. "Well there's no need. I was fine before and I'll remain fine in the many years to come. As for your confusion with why you think my magic is familiar to yours, it can't be. I am probably 10 years older than you and I moved away from Fiore at the age of 8."
Juvia shook her head. "Oh no. I've been told that I was frozen for seven years due to Acnologia attacking us. But if you don't remember me, then it's likely that we have never met. However, I'm sorry for disturbing your peace. I'll just leave you now. It was...nice to see you."
Juvia stood up and bowed gracefully and turned on her heels. She heard Invel sigh from behind her and she turned to give him a questioning look.
"I'll stop the snow so that you are able to walk through it."
Juvia smiled and nodded her head. "Thank you. Have a good day."
Juvia couldn't really understand why she felt so at peace with Invel. There was no fight or flight response that she felt when she was initially in Fairy Tail's presence. Still, she wouldn't bother him any longer if he didn't want her around him. It was just that she felt a nice level of calm just because she had seen him.
True to his word, he had stopped the snowstorm just for her. She felt some sort of warm feeling flood her chest, one that she tried her very best to ignore. She wondered if she would ever see him again. She didn't know how she had ended up here, she was only trying to know her bearings around the town and see if she could remember everywhere.
The moment she was far enough, the snowstorm was back. Juvia held out her hand and let some of the freezing cold snow land on her hand. She stared at it before cringing and holding her head in agony. She had another flashback, but this one was from her childhood. She was holding her Uncle's hand as they trudged the snow and a snowflake landed on her hand.
When the memory ended, she sighed to herself. "Why are these odd memories coming to Juvia?"
She sighed and turned to head back home. She had been out for a while and she hoped that Erza and Wendy wouldn't be worried.
So how was that for a first chapter? Like I said, this will be a simple and short story. I won't be killing myself over the length of the chapters on this. So, because I posted this on a Monday, updates will be every Monday.
Remember how I said that I have a fever in the AN at the top? By the end of editing this, I got an email to say the test that I did is positive for covid. Yay.
Please don't forget to rate or hate, flames or floods! I'm calling all of my brand new work written this year as part of my 10th year anniversary project, so please enjoy it!
