Pushing her personal feelings towards Ted aside, it would have been impossible for Bailey to say no to his offer. For one, Higgins did not manage to find a hotel with a vacancy anywhere around Nelson Road. Apparently, everything within a two-hour travel time was completely booked for the weekend if not the entire week. She had nowhere else to go unless she wanted to sleep on the benches in the locker room and she very much did not. So, after Ted and Beard managed to wedge a third slightly smaller desk into their office, she walked home with the Head Coach.
"Bailey, I do believe this is us." He proclaimed when they arrived at the address Higgins had provided.
She opened the door to find that Ted's place was already lightly furnished. The main door opened to a living room, which already had a coach and two armchairs. There was also a TV, some end tables, several lamps, and various framed photos taken around London. The view from the living room windows was mostly of shops that surrounded the property. Overall, it was nice, but didn't outwardly say, "this is the home of Ted Lasso."
There were boxes piled in the middle of the living room. Bailey assumed they were things that Ted had shipped over from the states. There were two bedrooms as one was eventually intended for Henry. For now, Ted invited Bailey to settle in there and make herself comfortable. She could hear him unpacking his things in the room across the hall. Eventually she heard him talking to someone.
"Ted?" She poked her head out of the bedroom door. That was when she realized his door was mostly shut. It was open just a crack. Enough that Bailey could every other sentence. She pieced together that Ted was on the phone with Michelle.
"Yeah, I've got a cute neighborhood too! You and the little guy get on over here and check it out." He sounded enthusiastic. He couldn't wait to share his new life with his family. Ted paused as Michelle answered him on the other end. He was pacing around the room. When he spoke next his voice was quiet, less excited. "What? No what did I say? B-but that's what I'm doing though. I'm giving you that space." He sighed. "I love you. No…no that's okay you don't have too…"
It hurt to hear the person she cared so much about sounding so broken hearted. That was the truth of the matter she supposed. Ted Lasso's heart was breaking. Maybe it was a good thing her housing had gotten messed up. If nothing else, she could save him from feeling so alone. Bailey waited a few minutes so that it wasn't obvious she'd been listening before she walked across the hall and knocked on Ted's door. He was all smiles when he opened the door. The lightning quick change made her wish she could just reach out and hold him.
"I got a pretty good nap in on the plane but I'm still a little messed up from this time travel stuff." She told him. "I know I'm probably already in your way enough, but I saw the TV out there. Thought maybe we could hook up my iPad and watch something until we're both tired enough to sleep."
"I would like that very much." Ted nodded. "You know what? They were supposed to stock the fridge with groceries too. How's about I see if I can forage us up some popcorn while you take care of the AV equipment?"
So, at ten pm London time, Ted was making popcorn and Bailey was uncoiling the HDMI cable and adaptors she had packed. She was thankful that she had thought to take them in the carry-on bag rather than send them along with her other stuff. Soon enough everything was connected, and she was able to display her iPad screen on the TV. The only question now, what to watch?
Ted's favorite movies were romances of any kind. Rom-coms, dramas, space operas, it didn't matter. He loved love. Even despite is current situation, he would want a tale about people in love or falling in love. Luckily, Bailey's extensive movie library covered every sort of genre imaginable.
"What are we watching?" Ted asked as he sat down beside her and placed a mounded bowl of popcorn on the coffee table. "The Wedding Singer?" He read off the screen before nodding with approval. "I love stories about folks falling in love who don't even know they're in love. Oh, let me get just one more thing."
Ted returned to the living room with the same soft blue blanket he shared with her on the plane. Bailer pressed play on the iPad screen and joined him back on the couch. Ted spread the blanket across both of their laps and nestled the warm popcorn bowl between them.
"Nice n' cozy!" He proclaimed happily.
Over the next twenty minutes Bailey and Ted took turns grabbing handfuls of popcorn from the communal bowl. Occasionally there would be a casual brush of their fingertips as the two of them reached in at the same time. There was even an instance where they were so invested in the movie, their fingers briefly tangled together. This led to awkward and quiet but rushed apologies.
"Oh, after you." Ted insisted, gesturing to the bowl.
"Sorry." Bailey whispered again before taking just one piece off the top. The popcorn sat abandoned for a while after that. An hour into the movie, Ted's eyes began to drift. He woke himself mid-yawn and smiled.
"I think it's about time I hit the hay." He said, getting to his feet. "This was nice though. We should do it again sometime."
"You know, I think I'm finally tired too." Bailey yawned and stretched. "Do you mind if I leave the iPad hooked up? I'll take care of this though." She handed Ted his blanket and took the popcorn bowl in her other hand.
"Sounds good," Ted yawned again. He accepted the blanket as she handed it to him before turning on his heels towards his room. "Good night, Sweetheart, love ya."
From the second the first syllable of the word Sweetheart was out of his moth Bailey froze. She was midway reaching for the popcorn bowl when it happened. You just stood there stupidly partway between reaching for the bowl. Her heart was pounding so fast that she could feel it in her ears. She didn't know what to say. She'd imagined him saying almost those exact words to her a thousand times, but she knew that this wasn't earned. He hadn't meant it. Ted's brain seemed to process what he'd said almost thirty seconds after Bailey's had. He immediately turned around and began to apologize.
"Bailey, I am so sorry. I was not trying to..." Sensing his distress was enough for her own body to unfreeze. Bailey continued to reach for the bowl of popcorn and put on her best imitation of a Ted Lasso 'everything is fine' smile. She waved him off.
"Don't worry about it, Coach." Yes, Coach felt like a safe name to use. It was the first word she could manage that wasn't another pet name in response to him. "I'm the first roommate you've had in a while that's not married to you. And we're both pretty sleep deprived." She shrugged. "I've told chocolate bars that I love them when I've had this much sleep. It's not a big deal."
"Right, of course." Ted nodded, but he didn't sound sure. "I'll see ya in the morning Bailey." He said before heading into his room for the night.
"See you then, Coach." She promised, carrying the bowl of popcorn in the opposite direction.
