Damage
"Have fun mom! Have fun dad!" Six year old Thomas said, waving at his parents. "Be good for your uncle, mate!" Bandit said as he pulled out of the driveway. "I love you sweetie! In bed by nine okay?" Emily said, smiling at her son. "No worries Em I got him!" Stripe said with a smile. "That's what I'm worried about," Bandit said, looking at his wife. "Hey!" Stripe said as Bandit chuckled before driving away from their house. Stripe shook his head and then looked at his nephew. "Alright mate, what do you want to do?" Stripe asked. "Can we order pizza and make slime?" Thomas asked, wagging his tail. "Pizza and Slime? Hmm… I'm okay!" Stripe said, wagging his tail. "Yay!" Thomas said now going to his house.
Thomas and Stripe were making Slime in the front room while wearing crowns on their heads. "This is fun," Thomas said while making blue slime. "Yeah, it is," Stripe said with a smile. "Uncle Stripe?" Thomas asked, looking at his uncle. "Yes mate?" Stripe asked, looking at his nephew. "I love you," Thomas said smiling. "I love you too mate," Stripe said with a smile as he rubbed the top of his nephew's head. Suddenly there was a knock at the door. "I think that is our pizza," Stripe said as he stood up. "Can you set the table mate?" Stripe asked as he went to the door. "Sure thing mate!" Thomas said, trying to Imitate his uncle's accent.
Stripe chuckled while getting the door. Stripe opened the door and found a police officer at the door. "Are you Stripe Heeler?" The officer asked. "I am… what's this about?" Stripe asked. "I'm sorry to inform you, but there's been an accident," The officer said. "Accident? What kind of an accident?" Stripe asked. "There was car accident and your brother and sister-in-law didn't make it," The officer explained. Stripes' eyes widened and tears started to form. "Is there someone I can call for you Mr. Heeler?" The officer asked. "N-no I-I need to have a talk with my nephew," Stripe said, almost choking on his words. "I see, if you need any assistance here's my card," The officer said, handing Stripe his card. Stripe nodded, ranking the card and closing the door.
Stripes heart was broken but he knew he had to be strong for his nephew. Stripe took a deep breath and went to tell his nephew the news. Stripe went into the dinning room and saw Thømas said plates down and cups. "Hey mate," Stripe said as he walked over to his nephew. "Do you want some water with your pizza? or my dad some soda or if you want I think my mom wouldn't mind if you had some of her wine and I have juice too," Thomas said speaking fast. "Mate… I need to talk to you," Stripe said still with his heart breaking. "What is it uncle Stripe?" Thomas asked, looking at his uncle. "Mate… there was an accident and it's about your parents," Stripe started to explain. "What? They're alright aren't they?" Thomas asked, looking up at his uncle. Stripe let a tear fall from his muzzle and shook his head.
"No mate, they didn't survive the crash," Stripe said, getting down to his nephew's level. "No! You're lying!" Thomas shouted now with tears. Stripe shook his head as he placed his hands on Thomas's shoulders. "I'm not mate I'm so sorry," Stripe said while Thomas tried to fight him but then broke down crying in his uncle's arms. Stripe started crying softly while holding his nephew in his arms. "Shh mate," Stripe said while rubbing his nephew's back. "What's going to happen to me, Uncle Stripe?" Thomas asked, breathing hard. "You're going to live with me mate and I promise nothing bad is going to happen to you," Stripe said as he held Thomas. "U-Uncle S-Stripe I-I c-can't b-breathe," Thomas breathing heavily. "Mate?" Stripe said, looking at his nephew. Thomas was breathing hard with the room spinning. Thomas turned away from his uncle and threw up.
"Mate? Are you okay?" Stripe asked, looking at Thomas as he threw up. "Thomas!" Stripe asked worriedly. Thomas continues to throw up. Stripe then picks up his nephew and takes him to the hospital. Now at the hospital the doctor look at Thomas and then talks to Stripe. "He had a pretty bad panic attack," the doctor said, looking at Stripe. "Oh… I thought it was something much worse," Stripe said, rubbing the back of his neck. "Your son should be fine though," the doctor said. "Oh he's not my son he's my nephew we… we just found out his parents were killed in a car accident," Stripe explained. "I'm so sorry to hear that," the doctor said. "Thanks mate," Stripe replied. "I would suggest scheduling a grief counselor right away since he's so young," The doctor said before leaving. Stripe took a deep breath before calling his wife.
Thomas was laying in the hospital bed as Stripe came into the room. "Hey mate," Stripe said, sitting down next to Thomas. "Uncle Stripe?" Thomas said softly. "Yes mate?" Stripe asked. "I miss my mom and dad," Thomas said softly. "I know you do mate, I miss them too," Stripe said, holding Thomas's hand. "What's going to happen now?" Thomas asked, holding onto his uncle's hand. "Well mate, you'll come live with me and aunt Trixie and… I hope we can move forward," Stripe asked. Thomas nodded, looking away from his uncle. "Get some sleep mate, we'll talk more in the morning," Stripe said, rubbing the top of his nephew's head. Thomas nodded and laid down his head and went to sleep. Stripe sighed and sat in the chair and closed his eyes to try and get some rest.
(Nine years later…)
Thomas, now fifteen years old, grabs his stuff out of his locker. Thomas shuts his locker and heads out of his school. Thomas then bumped into the school Bully. "Watch it!" Zach shouted with a low growl. "S-sorry," Thomas said, a little scared. Zach then grabbed Thomas's books and threw them down. "Loser!" Zach shouted as he moved on. Thomas then got down on his knees and started picking up his books. Thomas suddenly felt the room spin and his breathing started to feel shallow. "No not here please," Thomas thought in his head. Thomas hurried up and gather his things and raced outside where his uncle was waiting for him. Thomas raced outside and went to his uncle's car.
"Hey mate, how was-" Stripe started then stopped noticing Thomas was having a panic attack. "Mate, just breathe, you have your appointment in an hour," Stripe said. "I-I n-need t-to s-see her now," Thomas said while breathing hard. "Okay mate we're going," Stripe said as he started the car and went to the therapist office. Now in the office waiting from his turn Thomas was then call to Dr. Chilli Hartman office. Thomas went in and sat down. "Hi Thomas, how are you feeling today?" Chilli asked. Thomas nervously moves his leg up and down.
"Scared a-and worthless," Thomas answered. "Thomas we talked about this last time, you're not worthless," Chilli said as she adjusted her glasses. "I-I know b-but this week is the anniversary of nine years since my parents," Thomas answered. "And how are you feeling about that?" Chilli asked to write down some notes. Thomas looked down before answering. "This is a safe place sweetie, you know that and you can take all the time you need," Chilli said with a smile. "It's funny after all this time of talking to you sound like my mom, that's something she would say," Thomas said with a soft smile. Chilli smiled. "Did you always wanted to be a therapist?" Thomas asked, looking at Chilli. "Well believe it or not I was going to be airport security," Chilli explained. "Really? I think you would be cool at that," Thomas said with a chuckle. "You think so?" Chilli asked with a chuckle.
"Yeah," Thomas said with a nod. "My son Bleu says the same thing," Chilli said with a smile. "Oh how old is your son?" Thomas asked. "He's six, almost seven," Chilli said, putting her notepad down. "That's nice;" Thomas said looking down. "Thomas," Chilli said. Thomas looked up at Chilli. "Let's go back to the beginning," Chilli said softly. Thomas nodded, taking a breath and started talk about the past nine years. Thomas left his appointment and met his uncle in his car. "How did it go mate? Do you feel better?" Stripe asked. Thomas nodded as he looked at his uncle. "Uncle Stripe?" Thomas asked. "Yes mate?" Stripe asked as he started the car. "Do you regret taking me in?" Thomas asked. "What? No never," Stripe said as he started driving home. "After all the late nights and panic attacks you still want me around?" Thomas asked.
"Mate, you're the closest thing I have to a son and after your parents passed away Trixie and I promised to take care of you because we love you," Stripe explained. "But you didn't even get to have your own kids and I feel like that's my fault," Thømas said looking down. "Actually mate, I was going to wait until we got home but Trixie and I… well… were expecting mate," Stripe said as he pulled up to their house. "Y-you are?" Thømas asked. Stripe nodded with a smile. "Congratulations uncle Stripe," Thomas said with a smile. "Thanks mate, but don't think we don't love you any less, you made our life whole because you are our son," Stripe said, resting his head on Thomas' head and hugging him. Thomas started to cry knowing how much his uncle and aunt meant to him and how much he meant to them.
(Flashback eight years earlier)
Seven year old Thomas was tossing and turning in his bed whimpering much how Bandit used to. "D-dad… m-mom!" Thomas said in his sleep. "No!" Thomas screamed while sitting up from his nightmare. Thomas started crying hard as Stripe came into the room. "Hey mate, are you okay?" Stripe asked as he sat down next to Thomas. "Dad? I-I mean uncle Stripe," Thomas said looking up at his uncle. "Shh mate it's okay you had a bad dream," Stripe said cuddling his nephew. "I'm sorry I woke you up," Thomas said cuddling his uncle. "No mate it's okay," Stripe said, rubbing the top of his nephew's head. "Are you okay sweetie?" Trixie asked, coming into the room. Thomas sniffed and nodded. Trixie then sat on the other side of Thomas and cuddled him with her husband.
"I'm sorry for waking you up aunt Trixie," Thomas said looking at his aunt. "Mate it's okay, we're just worried about you," Stripe said. "We love you sweetheart and I know it's only been a year but everything is going to be okay," Trixie said, holding Thomas close. "But what if it doesn't get better? I keep slipping up on my panic attacks and it's always hard to breathe," Thomas said looking down. "I think this might be a good time to tell you," Trixie said with a smile. "Tell me what?" Thomas asked, confused. "We found a special doctor mate and her name is Chilli and we think she can help you," Stripe said with a soft smile. "Really? You think she can?" Thomas asked. "Yes mate we think she can, in fact I've been talking to her myself about your dad passing," Stripe said while rubbing his nephew's back. "Has she helped you uncle Stripe?" Thomas asked, looking at his uncle.
Stripe smiled and nodded. "Yeah mate, she has gotten me to open up about him," Stripe said. "When can I see her?" Thomas asked. "We set up an appointment tomorrow afternoon," Trixie said. Thomas, now more calm nodded in response. "Are you okay now sweetie?" Trixie asked. "Yeah," Thomas replied. "Okay," Trixie said as she gave Thomas a kiss on his head. "Hey some sleep sweetie I love you," Trixie said as she got up from the bed.
"I love you too, Aunt Trixie," Thomas said, laying back down. Stripe was about to leave the room as well until Thomas spoke up. "Uncle Stripe?" Thomas asked, looking at his uncle. "Yes mate?" Stripe asked. "Can you stay with me until I go to sleep?" Thomas asked. Stripe's heart warmed up. "Sure mate," Stripe said as he laid down next to Thomas. Thomas let out a sigh as he cuddled next to Stripe's fur. After feeling his nephew sigh Stripe could feel it was a sigh of pain and grief. Thomas held on tight of his uncle and didn't want to let go. Without realizing it Thomas whispered softly to Stripe just before going to sleep. "Good night dad," Thomas whispered as he dozed off. Stripe started to tear up after hearing that from his nephew. Stripe wasn't his father but he knew he would have to be since now Thomas was growing up without one. "Good night son," Stripe whispered back.
(Present day 6 months later..)
Thomas, Stripe and Trixie were having breakfast at the table when Trixie was feeling her baby kick. "Looks like someone is up early," Trixie said, feeling her stomach. "Have you two picked out a name yet for her?" Thomas asked while eating his breakfast. "No not yet mate we're still thinking;" Stripe said with a yawn. "But she sure likes to keep her daddy up at night," Trixie said with a chuckle. "That's for sure," Stripe said, drinking some coffee. "Can I suggest a name?" Thomas asked, looking at his aunt and uncle. Stripe and Trixie were a little surprised.
"Sure mate, any name at this point would work just great," Stripe said with a smile. Trixie chuckled, taking a bite of her toast. "What name do you have, sweetie?" Trixie asked. Thomas looked over at the basket of muffins that Nana had made and sent over. "How about Muffin?" Thomas asked, looking at his aunt and uncle. "Muffin huh? I like it!" Stripe said with a smile. Trixie smiled with a nod. "I like it too and speaking of Muffins, Stripe, can you bring those muffins over here," Trixie said. Stripe chuckled and did what his wife told him to do. "Good work mate, you'll be on your way to be the best brother ever," Stripe said, placing his hand on Thomas's shoulder. "Thanks uncle Stripe," Thomas said with a smile.
