Chapter 14: Thought Of You
Bandt was doing his homework in the shade underneath a tree when his father walked up to him. "Hey Bandit," Bob said with a smile as he sat down next to his son. "Hey dad," Bandit said, putting his homework to the side. "I already talked to Rad about this, but I wanted to let you know because you're the second oldest," Bob said, placing his hand on his son's shoulder. "Okay, what is it dad?" Bandit asked. "Me and your mother are going away for the weekend, so it's just going to be you kids at home," Bob explained. "So I want you and Rad in charge," Bob said. "Really?" Bandit asked. Bob nodded, "you and Rad will be in charge of Stripe and as for Emily… well… she takes care of herself and I'm sure Rad will take care of her too," Bob explained. "Yeah… I'm sure he will," Bandit said, turning back to his homework. "Hey," Bob said looking at his son. Bandit stopped doing his homework and looked at his father. "There will be someone for you, you just have to wait for it," Bob said with a smile.
Bandit nodded before turning back to his homework. Bob then stood up and went into the house. Rad, Emily and Stripe were in the front room helping Bob and Chris to their car. "Oh my boys," Chris said as she hugged her son's. "Mum, it's only for a weekend," Rad said, hugging his mother. "Yeah mum, we're not kid's anymore," Stripe said. "Oh Stripy you'll always be my baby," Chris said, kissing her son on his head. "Mum!" Stripe groaned. "Come on dear let the kids be," Bob said getting into the car. "Take care sweets and Emily, be sure to drink plenty of water and do your breathing exercises," Chris giving Emily a hug. "I will Mrs Heeler," Emily said with a smile as she hugged Chris. Once Chris and Bob left for the weekend the three kids walked into the house. "Anybody hungry?" Emily asked. "I am!" Stripe spoke up. "Your always hungry mate," Rad teased. "Hey!" Stripe said, looking at his oldest brother. "I'll make us lunch;" Emily said, going into the kitchen.
Emily was washing her hands until she looked outside seeing Bandit hard at work on his homework. "Hey Rad?" Emily asked. "Yes babe?" Rad asked from the living room. "Could you cut the veggies for me?" Emily asked, looking at her boyfriend. "Sure thing," Rad said as he stood up from the couch and went into the kitchen. Emily then went outside to talk to Bandit. Bandit continues doing his homework not noticing Emily walking up to him. "Hey," Emily said softly to the blue Heeler. Bandit then looked up at Emily and put his book aside. "Hey," Bandit said softly. "I'm making everyone lunch if you want to join us," Emily said softly. "Oh, okay," Bandit said, looking down to the ground. "Bandit," Emily said, trying to get his attention. "What?" Bandit said a little bittersweet. "Please Bandit, I don't want us to be like this anymore," Emily said, placing her hand on Bandit's knee. "Which part? The part where I Comfort you about your brother? Which by the way Rad still doesn't know you want to see him or the part where you pushed me away?" Bandit said coldly. "Bandit…" Emily said softly. "Don't Em… just please leave me alone," Bandit said as he packed up his things and went over to Pat's gate. "You're not coming for lunch?" Emily asked, hurt by Bandit's words. "I'll eat at Pat's," Bandit said, not looking at Emily as he went into Pat's yard.
With a sad look, Emily returned back inside, going to the kitchen, where Rad was cutting veggies. "Hey, babe, look, I'm almost done with the veggies," he said, noticing his girlfriend's sad look. "What's wrong, Emily?" Rad asked, approaching her. "It's… nothing," she replied, while going to continue to make lunch. However, Rad could tell she was not being honest. He approached her, taking her hands and making her look at him. "Come on, Em, I know there's something bothering you, tell me what it is, you know you can trust me," he said. Emily sighed. "It's Bandit… he's going to eat at Pat's," she told. "That's not uncommon, he does that a lot, those two have been best friends ever since they were kids," Rad told. "I know that, but… the reason he went to lunch there is not because of friendship, we had this little argument and… I think it's still hard for him," Emily said. "I thought he was already over that…" Rad commented. Emily didn't want to tell Rad the real reason why Bandit got mad, as she didn't want to upset him and worse things between the two brothers.
"Something like this can't be possibly overcome in just a few weeks, what would you feel if I had decided to be with Bandit and not you?" Emily asked. "Well, for once, I wouldn't be the proud father of this little pup in your belly," Rad replied, in a teasing way, while caressing Emily's belly. But a stern look from her girlfriend caused him to stop and adopt a more serious look. "Look, Em, don't worry about Bandit, he's a tough kid, he'll get over this," Rad said. "I don't know…" Emily said. "Trust me, babe, he'll come around, you'll see, now what do you think about finishing lunch? If we don't worry, we'll have a hungry Stripe complaining and trust me when I say you won't want to see that," Rad said. Despite being worry about Bandit, Emily couldn't help but release a chuckle. "I guess you're right…" Emily said. And so the two of them continued to finish lunch.
Meanwhile, at Pat's, Bandit was seated at the table with his best friend and his dad. "I'm glad to have you to lunch with us, Bandit," Pat's dad said. "Thank you, Mr. Labrador," Bandit replied. "But I am curious why you came," Mr. Labrador told. "Well… my mum and dad went away for the weekend, and…" Bandit started, trying to find an excuse that didn't expose the real reason why he was there. Fortunately for him, Pat was able to notice something was not right with Bandit and decided to give his best friend a hand to avoid his dad's question. "Oh, come on, dad, Bandit just doesn't want to disturb Rad and Emily, it is not too pleasant to be a third wheel," Pat said, while winking an eye to Bandit, who smiled thankful to him. "I guess, you're right…" Mr. Labrador said. "Hey, Bandit, I have something to show you after lunch, you'll love it," Pat said. However, through the way he said that, Bandit knew that was just an excuse so they could talk without raising any suspicion.
After lunch, they went to Pat's room. "Okay, now that we're alone, you can tell me what's up," he said. "What do you mean, Pat?" Bandit asked. "Come on, Bandit, we've known each other for years now, since we were kids, so I know when something's up with you," Pat said. Bandit sighed, knowing he couldn't keep anything from his best friend. "Okay, I'll tell you, but you can't tell anyone… much less Rad," Bandit told. "I promise," Pat replied. And so Bandit went to tell Pat about what happened. "Wow, that's… I don't even know what to say, you slept in her room?" Pat asked. "Nothing happened between us, I slept on the floor, she didn't want to be alone after what happened with her brother and so I stayed to give her support," Bandit told. "I see, that's why you came for lunch here today?" Pat asked. "I snapped at her, just before coming, it's just… I feel this frustration that is only growing and growing, Emily and I have a big connection and see her with Rad… is like torture," Bandit said. "I thought you were over that," Pat commented. "I am, it's just… Uh, I don't even know anymore!" Bandit exclaimed, while lying down on his back on Pat's bed.
Pat went to sit beside Bandit. "You know, this is not the end of the world," the former said. "Oh, really, and how come?" Bandit asked, sarcastically. "Well, there's more girls around, I bet you will find another to fall in love with," Pat told. "There will be no other girl like Emily…" Bandit replied to him. "A little overdramatic don't you think?" Pat asked. But Bandit just shrugged his shoulders. "If you and Emily really have a much deeper bond than she has with Rad, maybe someday you'll have your chance with her," Pat said. Bandit then sit up. "Are you saying I should make Emily and my brother to break up?" Bandit asked, with a perplexed look. "Of course not, how could you think I was implying that, I'm just saying that… sometimes things happen and relationships end… look at me, my parents loved each other very much, but even their love came to an end," Pat explained. "Yeah, but I'm not seeing that happening anytime soon, they love each other very much, and they're going to have a kid together, do you think I want to become my nephew's stepdad?" Bandit told. "Wow… you're really hard to help," Pat commented. "Tell me something I don't know," Bandit sighed, while lying down again.
"Emily, I didn't think you could cook like that," Rad said, finishing his plate. "I watched my mom cook a lot," Emily said with a chuckle. Stripe burped and looked at his plate. "Rude much mate?" Rad said, looking at his little brother. Emily couldn't help but to laugh. "At least I made the chef laugh," Stripe said with a smile. Rad rolled his eyes as they heard Bandit come into the door. "Bandit is that you mate?" Rad asked. "Yeah.." Bandit said coldly coming up the stairs. "We saved you some food," Emily said looking at the blue Heeler. "Thanks…" Bandit said before heading to his room.
Emily looked down as she then started to clear the table. "Hey, you cooked me and Stripe will clean up," Rad said, taking the plates from Emily. "Thanks," Emily said with a smile. Stripe and Rad started cleaning while Emily walked to the Heeler brothers room. Bandit was at his desk finishing up his leftover homework he had. "Bandit?" Emily said coming into the room. "What?" Bandit said without looking at Emily as she sat down next to him. "Please, let's talk," Emily said softly. Bandit wanted to scream at her but didn't have the heart to do it. The thought of her hurt him and he wanted to tell her he loved her and wanted her to leave his brother for him but couldn't do that either.
Bandit looked at Emily and looked into her eyes. "Okay…" Bandit said softly. "I saw my brother to tell him what he did was wrong and he's done that my whole life telling other dogs no one was ever good for me," Emily explained. "I-I didn't want Rad to worry because my brother can be dangerous," Emily said, placing her hand on Bandit's hand. Bandit nodded as he looked at Emily. "I… I understand," Bandit said softly. "I'm sorry I hurt you, I don't ever want to hurt you," Emily said, tearing up. Was it hormones? Or was it real feelings she was feeling for Bandit? she didn't know. all she knew was, if she was close to Bandit or Rad she felt safe and felt like she was with the one she really loved.
The thought of Bandit made her feel free and in love for real life for the first time. "Alright, are you still hungry?" Emily asked. Bandit chuckled with a smile. "Yeah, kinda," Bandit replied. Emily smiled, placing her hand on Bandit's muzzle. "Okay, I'll go get you what I made for Lunch," Emily said as she left the room. Bandit's heart skipped a beat after feeling Emily touch him. Although Bandit knew things couldn't work for him and Emily unless her and Rad didn't work out. Bandit then went back to his homework and finished it.
Emily's heart also skipped a beat after placing her hand on Bandit's muzzle. Emily went to the kitchen and grabbed Bandit's plate and shut the fridge. Rad smiled at his girlfriend as she grabbed Bandit's plate. Emily smiled back at her boyfriend and then walked back to Bandit's room. Emily then took a deep breath and went into the room and placed the plate at Bandit's desk. "I hope you like it," Emily said with a smile. Bandit took a bite of his food and smiled. "It's great Em," Bandit replied with a smile. Bandit and Emily locked eyes for a moment until Emily cleared her throat with a smile. "I should get started on my homework," Emily said before going to her room. Bandit nodded as he watched Emily leave. Once Emily was out of the room, Bandit smiled of the thought of her again.
(5 months later…)
Bandit was shaking in the waiting room waiting to hear back from the doctor. Thoughts raced in his mind of would Emily make it? Would the baby make it? Would she die? Or would the baby die? "Damn it!" Bandit shouted, hugging his knees and crying. "Em, please be okay," Bandit whispered to himself while Shaking. Bob sat next to Bandit and placed his hand on his son's shoulder. "Bandit," Bob said. Bandit jumped hearing his name as he looked at his dad. "Dad? Bandit said looking at his father and then hugged him tightly. Rad sat across from his Father and Brother with his arm bleeding from the wreck he was in with his girlfriend. "It's all my fault…" Rad said to himself.
