The Dinner
"Ugh, do we have to do this again this year?" Thomas said while walking down the street. "At least we can be with family," Balto added. "Yeah, but my family's weird," Thomas said as they continued down the street. "They're not bad," Balto said with a chuckle. "Oh sure, says the one who got his tail pulled last year," Thomas joked. Balto had forgotten that and didn't remember until now. "Right, I forgot about that," Balto said with a nervous smile. "Alright well, we better head home," Thomas said while putting his hands in his pocket. Not long after that. Thomas and Balto walk into the house. "Mom was looking for you," Rosy said from the living room. "What? I got the milk like she asked for," Thomas said, putting up his coat. "That's not what she's mad about," Rosy said while drawing in her pad.
"So why is she mad?" Thomas asked, thinking about all the stuff he was asked to do. "Oh so you really dont remember? Mom asked you to prepare a place to sleep for Daniel... he's coming with Auntie Bella.." Rosy said looking at Thomas smiling as she said her aunt name. "You didn't warn me that someone is going to sleep in our room." Balto chuckled, kinda making fun of Thomas. "Ssh Balto." Thomas waved hes hand at Balto's snout, as he went into the kitchen. "Heyy.. mum.." Thomas started.
Thomas's mother looked at him with a concern look on her face. "I thought I asked you to make a place for Daniel to sleep," his mother said while continuing to cook. "Sorry mum it didn't cross my mind," Thomas said with a chuckle. "You know how your aunt is honey and I need you to help out more," said his mother. "Yeah I know mum," Thomas said rubbing the back of his neck. "And you and Daniel used to be best friends when you were younger, what happened to that?" His mother asked. "We just grew apart mum, it happens," Thomas said while helping putting the groceries away. "Well, please after your done go set up a place for your cousin to sleep in your room," his mother asked. "Yeah, sure thing mum," Thomas said as he went to go do what he was told.
Balto followed Thomas as he get upstairs to hes room. "You really dont seem to enjoy the fact that hes gonna sleep here. I don't know why but i have a feeling that its something more than just 'growing apart'.." Balto said as he laid on Thomas's bed and watched Thomas. Thomas looked at Balto having feeling that Balto's making fun of him. "It was long ago, we were competing in everything.. we just wasn't agreeing in everything okay? I have enough of this day already..." Thomas sighed as he finished preparing sleeping place.
"Hey, I'm sorry just trying to make you feel better," Balto said softly. "I know," Thomas said as he finished setting things up. "You and Jenna better get some alone time before the family gets here," Thomas said while sitting on his bed. "Yeah, your right," Balto said as he got off the bed. As Balto left to see what Jenna was up to, Thomas stayed behind in his room starting at the ceiling.
Thomas didn't even realised when he actually fell asleep, he was woken by the door bell. "Huh..? What hour is it?" Thomas looked at ges phone realising he was sleeping for two hours. "Shit..." He get up finishing cleaning things from hes desk. "Okay everything is set now.." Thomas said to himself. "Thomas, Rosy! Come downstairs." Thomas's mum said from downstairs.Thomas and Rosy both came downstairs and met and greeted their aunt, uncle and cousins. Thomas stood by the stairs as the family came into the house and started greeting each other. "Hey cousin," Daniel said looking at Thomas. "Hey," Thomas replied while crossing his arms.
Balto and Jenna noticed awkward silence between boys, Balto gave Jenna the look and they started walking from behind Thomas's back. Balto wanted to push Thomas towards Daniel but that didn't work out, Jenna approached Daniel as he took step back. "Auntie you have two dogs now?" Daniels voice kinda cracked, thomas smiled remembering that Daniel is kinda scared of dogs. "Jenna, you said it's gonna work out.." Balto whispered softly to Jenna, as he still tried to push Thomas forward.
"Yes we have two now," Rosy and Thomas's mother said. "Kelly, let's get into the kitchen I want to start making my cranberry sauce," Bella said while hearing that way to the kitchen. "Play nice," Thomas's mother whispered to her son. "Right…" Thomas said as he looked at Daniel. "Come on Kayla lets go play with my new doll house my dad made," Rosy said to her cousin. Kayla was Daniel's sister who was the same age as Rosy. With Rosy and Kayla leaving the room it was only the boys and the dogs in the living room.
Thomas keep smiling as he watches Daniel keep his distance from Balto and Jenna. "Dont tell me youre scared of two little dogs.." Thomas said as he keep smiling. "Sush.. its my secret and you freaking know that.. and that one isn't a little dog. He's huge!" Daniel said. Balto lowered his head and approached Jenna. "I didn't know hes scared of dogs.." Balto whispered to Jenna. "Mum dont you need my help or something?" Daniel asked looking to kitchen. "No. Go spend some time with Thomas, you two haven't seen each other in a while." Daniel's mum said.
Thomas chuckled as he crossed his arms. "By the way… Balto's half wolf," Thomas said with a smile. "Really?" Daniel said scared. "Thomas…" Balto said softly, looking at his owner. "It's the only reason he's a little bit bigger than normal," Thomas said with a chuckle. "Oh… um.. that's nice…" Daniel said nervously. "Want to see his teeth?" Thomas poked fun. "N… No," Daniel said, now being backed up to a corner. "Ah come on Daniel, they're really nice looking," Thomas said, stepping forward. "Thomas," Balto whispered. "No… I'm good," Daniel said again, scared.
Balto and Jenna looked at each other's. "Thomas stop.. dont u see hes scared?" Jenna said softly. "Thats the point.." Thomas said as he keep on smiling at Daniel. "Wh..What point?" Daniel asked looking up at Thomas. "That if you dare with me ur gonna see my wolfdog's teeth." Thomas said with satisfaction. "I.. I wont I promise.." Daniel answered feeling that he needs some fresh air now, as he breathes heavily.
"Thomas! That's enough!" Balto shouted now showing his teeth. "He talked! Ahh!!!" Daniel screamed running to the backyard. Thømas couldn't help but to laugh. "That wasn't funny," Jenna spoke up. "Oh come on, he'll get over it," Thomas said looking at both Balto and Jenna. "No, I don't think he will," Balto protested. "Alright fine, I'll say sorry," Thomas said as he went to follow Daniel who ran to the backyard. Balto sighed while shaking his head. "Hey, it'll be okay," Jenna said as she nuzzled her mate.
Hey Daniel..." Thomas said as he looked around looking for Daniel just to be pushed on the ground. "I told you my biggest secret and now ur just making fun out of me?! You want me to throw up? I dont know how have you done that it looked like that dog speak.. but that wasn't fucking funny! If not the fact ur dog is starting at me and that its Thanksgiving i would beat the shit out of you!" Daniel now really nervous kicks the rock making it hit the fence. "Why are you like this?! What have i done to you!?" Daniel said nervously as he's looking at sitting on the ground Thomas and confused Balto right behind him.
"It's actually kind of complicated how he talks… you must be one of the lucky ones who can hear him talk," Thomas explained as he rubbed the back of his neck. "You're just making it up to make me feel better!" Daniel said while crossing his arms. "I'm not actually not even my step sister Rosy can hear them," Thomas explained. "So, your serious about this?" Daniel asked. Thomas nodded in response. "And why are you doing this to me?" Daniel asked looking at his cousin. "Well since my dad died and my mom got remarried, things haven't been the same," Thomas explained while rubbing his neck.
"Very funny joke and all but the fact that ur parents divorced isn't the reason to be douchebag and bullying me!" Daniel said in anger. "Im sorry im just... sorry... but its not a joke.." Thomas said rubbing hes arm. "Mhm yeah and my name is dumb." Daniel said as he approached Balto. "Speak.. dog..Bingo or whatever your name is.." Daniel said as he knelt. "Actually my name is Balto." Balto said looking at Daniel. "My.. my God Thomas i cant believe.. how did you put a speaker into his mouth?" Daniel said looking at Thomas still not believing.Thomas rolled his eyes and then opened Balto mouth. "Does it look like there's a speaker in there?" Thomas asked while holding Balto's mouth open. "Um.. no," Daniel said looking into Balto's mouth. "Then there you have it, he talks," Thomas said, letting go of Balto's mouth.
"You think im dumb?" Daniel crossed hes arms. "Okay then.. ask a question to Balto." Thomas said confidently. "Tell me something about weather and whats ur owner name." Daniel said looking at Balto, who looked around. "Looks like its sunny no clouds up in the sky and my owner names Thomas." Balto answered. "Wha.. how.." Daniel couldn't belive it. See…" Thomas said patting Daniel on the back. "But how?" Daniel asked looking at Thomas. "We're one of the special ones," Thomas explained. "So does that mean Jenna can also hear us?" Daniel asked looking at Thomas. "Yep, she can too," Thomas said with a smile.
"But why us... why me?" Daniel kneel and looked at Jenna. "So you can speak too?" Daniel asked. "Yes." She smiled with nod. "So you wanna tell me that they can think and speak all the time? Why didn't i noticed earlier.. all animals seemed to be normal.. till now.." Daniel said kinda panicked. "Okay calm down you. At least now you can be sure which dogs wont hurt you." Thomas chuckled.
"Daniel we would never ever hurt you, we would do more to protect yo than to hurt you," Balto added. Daniel thought for moment and then nodded. "Thomas your dads home!" His mother called from the kitchen window. Thomas groaned at the thought of calling Rosy's dad his dad. "Okay!" Thomas called back. "We better get back to the house," Thomas said rubbing the back of his neck
Daniel approached Balto and pet him gently. Jenna smiled at that. They all went inside. "So.. where do I sleep today?" Daniel asked. "In my room. I'll help you with your stuff in a moment, okay?" Thomas answered. "Hi Thomas" Says Rosy's dad. "Hey," Thomas said in a low tone. "Helping your mum I hope," Rosy's dad said. "Yeah, I am," Thomas replied. "Listen, I hope we can have a good dinner tonight and maybe spend some time together," Rosy's dad said with a soft smile. "Yeah, sure," Thomas said as he went outside to get Daniels stuff. "Good talk," Rosy's dad said before heading into the kitchen. Thomas walked out to Daniel's mum's car and started to get his stuff. "Hello my dear boy," said a man in a top hat with a British accent.
"Hey Thomas, wait for me, I'll help you." Daniel said as he followed Thomas. "Um.. Hello sir.." Thomas replied to the stranger. "It's a beautiful Thanksgiving day isn't it? The weather is stunning." The stranger said. "Yeah.. it is.." Thomas grabbed some things hoping the stranger is gonna walk away. "Tell me child.. would you and your family appreciate some pie?" The stranger said, showing nice smelling pumpkin pie.
"Um… no I think we're good," Thomas said looking at the stranger. "It is a good looking pie," Daniel said looking at the pie. "Here, why don't you take it," the stranger said handing out the pie to Daniel. Daniel was about to take the pie until Thomas stepped in. "We're good we have enough pies," Thomas said looking at he stranger. The stranger looked at Thomas with a crooked smile. "This pie this a special one," The stranger said. "I don't care, come on Daniel," Thomas said as he and Daniel walked back to the house. "Bye," Daniel said while following Thomas.
"Are you out of mind? Taking pie from a stranger? I have a bad feeling about him." Thomas said in anger. "Sorry he seems nice to me. I don't know why is he dressed like this but the pie smelled amazing." Daniel said. "Yea? If u want pie so badly go take a piece from freezer not from a stranger!" Thomas shouted in anger. "Why do you guys always play like this... what kimd of game is it shouting and punching?" Rosy said looking up at her cousin and brother.
"It's complicated," Thomas said rather rudely. "You don't have to be so mean to her," Daniel pointed out. "Yeah, so? She's my half sister. I can say what I want to her," Thomas said getting into Daniel's face. "Back off!" Daniel said as he pushed Thomas. "You back off!" Thomas said as he pushed Daniel back. "Dinners ready!" Thomas's mother said with a smile. "See you at dinner," Thomas whispered to Daniel before heading into the dining room.
When family was up to sit together the door bell rang. "I wonder who that could be.." Thomas's mother said as she get up from the table and went to open doors. When she opened them she saw the same man Daniel and Thomas meet earlier. "Would you like some pie ma'am?" The stranger asked as he pulled the pie from behind him, it was still steaming warm, with delicious smell. "No thank you sir.." Thomas's mother was up to close the doors but stranger put hes hand in stopping doors from being closed.
"Please I insist, this pie is a very special pie," The stranger said with wide smile. "We don't want it please let me shut the door," Thomas's mother said still trying to shut the door. Rosy's father then stepped in and came to the door. "What's going on here?" He asked looking at the stranger. "Hello good sir, here I have a good scrumptious Pumpkin pie for you family," The stranger said now looking at Thomas's mother's husband. "Sorry we have too many pies as it is, have a good day," her husband said and firmly shut the door.
"Was that the British looking guy again?" Daniel asked as they all sit beside the table again. "Again?" Thomas's mother asked concerned. "Yea, that guy asked me if i want hes special pie.." Daniel said as he looked away to see if Thomas is coming to sit with them. Thomas came in and sat away from Daniel. "Did you talk to that man sweetheart?" Thomas's mother asked looking at her son. "Yeah, I told him to leave," Thomas replied as the family sat down. "You did good son," Rosy's father said looking at his stepson. "Yeah, whatever," Thomas said as they started to serve food.
The door bell started ringing again, it sounded like someone really frustrated waits outside. Rosy's father got up and opened the door with anger in hes eyes just to see the same guy he saw a moment ago. "Ive heard your starting the dinner and i just want to give you this good sir." The stranger hands the pie to Rosy's father.
Rosy's father then knocks the pie out of the strangers hand and then shouts. "We don't want the pie!," Rosy's father shouted and slammed the door shut. "If he comes back, I'll Call the police," Rosy's father said as he sat back down at the table. Thomas pushed his food around while everyone started eating. "Thomas honey are you okay?" Thomas's mother asked him.
"Yeah.. I guess.. I am.." Thomas said silently. Daniel looked at Thomas from the other side of the table but they both quickly looked away when they looked each other into eyes. Out of sudden a loud noise of door slam makes them all go silent. The stranger walks in closing doors behind him. "I wanted to go easy on you humans.. but you left me no choice." The stranger said as hes clothes felt like revealing his real look.
The stranger was a monster with dark scales for skin. His eyes were red as he eyed the family like they were a meal. The monster then licked his lips revealing razor sharp teeth. Rosy and Kayla screamed as they hid by their mothers. What the hell?!" Rosy's father screamed out loud. "Thomas go get the gun!" Rosy's father said as the monster jumped to him, he tries to stop the creature from biting into hes arm. "This wouldn't be so painful to watch... if only you eaten that special pie of mine!" The monster said as he was close to bite Rosy's father but out of sudden it was struck with a bowl into head. Pissed off monster jumped on Daniel knocking him down to the ground.
Thomas then grabbed the gun and shot the monster in the back. The monster screeched and turned and looked at Thomas. "Back off mother fucker," Thomas shouted as he shot again. The monster then cried a loud cry and ran upstairs leaving a trail of green blood. Thomas then ran over to Daniel and helped him up. "You okay?" Thomas asked. "Yeah I think so," Daniel said. Suddenly both boys heard a scream from upstairs. "Jenna!" Thomas and Daniel shouted as they went upstairs to see what was going on.
"Oh yes a dog meat thats what i need." The creature said as it was holding Jenna by neck looking her into eyes. The monster was ready to bite into Jenna's back when Balto jumped out of the shadow biting creature's arm that was holding Jenna. Balto growled as he took a defensive position over his mate. "You'll regret that!" The monster hissed while looking at Balto. "Get away from her!" Balto shouted while growling. The monster then showed his teeth as he stepped closer to Balto. The monster was about to jump at Balto until Thomas and Daniel came from behind him and back him up. Thomas then held the monster at gunpoint.
"You destroyed everything this could be so pleasant evening..." The monster said as it was about to Jump on Thomas. A loud blast goes off as Thomas pulled the trigger shooting right through the creature's chest making it fell to the ground.
"Is it dead?" Daniel asked looking at the monster. "Why don't you touch it," Thomas said looking at Daniel. "What is your problem?" Daniel said looking at his cousin. "Nothing just maybe you would want to be close to it," Thomas said with a smirk. "Boys," Balto said while standing beside Jenna. "Why don't you touch it!" Daniel said now getting defensive. "You touch it!" Thomas shouted while pushing Daniel. "Boys!" Balto shouted. The monster got up looked at them with a smile. "Humans are all the same.. just living in hate for each other.. " The creature jumped out through the window landing in the snow laughing in the darkness.
Jenna then teared up as she rest her head on Balto's shoulder. "He was right, we shouldn't have been fighting each other," Thomas said looking at Daniel. "I'm sorry for fighting," Daniel said as he and Thomas both hugged it out. "Let's see if everyone is okay downstairs," Thomas said as he, Daniel, Balto and Jenna all went downstairs hoping the family would be alright. Years since have passed as Thomas and Daniel remained close cousins since the incident at their family's house with the creature. News reports over the years have covered family homes being broken into and families have gone missing with freshly baked pies left at their doorstep.
