A/N: This use to be the story titled, 'The Date' now 'The Boxer' and 'The Date' are combined so I can continue to story as many people wanted me to do instead of just having them as one-shots.
Maura watched as Jane walked away. This woman pulled at her and she didn't understand why. She was interested to see where this was going with Jane. She was wondering if Jane would actually call her. She had met people in the past and given them her number and never heard from them but something was different with Jane. She felt comfortable automatically with her. She had a strong feeling she would be hearing from Jane. She went to sleep that night thinking of Jane and their pending date. She wondered where Jane would take her and what they would do. She was excited. She really hoped to hear from her tomorrow, she wanted to go out with her and get to know her better.
Jane walked back to the diner and called her cousin Arianna, who came and picked her up. Arianna drove her back to her car. Jane's car had been left at the gym when her boxing trainer had taken her to the hospital after her nose was broken in her boxing match. Arianna didn't like the look of Jane's face. They talked on the way to pick up Jane's car and Jane told her about the doctor that she had met and how she had asked her out on a date and she said yes after they went out for coffee. Arianna could see the excitement in Jane's expression when she talked about Maura. She was happy that Jane found someone that she was interested in.
A few minutes after they arrived at the gym Jane got out of Arianna's car and hopped into her car and drove home. When she walked in the front door her ma, Angela Rizzoli, yelled, "Janie, why are you home so late? It's almost midnight. I thought you were going to be home before 10:30 PM." Jane finished walking in the door and her ma stepped out of the kitchen and saw Jane's face. "Oh my God, what happened to your face?" Angela rushed over to her daughter to take a better look at her face.
Jane smiled and said, "I got punched in the face earlier. The doc told me to put some ice on my face. I need to get an ice pack." The ice in the pack that Maura had given her had melted already.
Angela stepped back into the kitchen and reached in the freezer and grabbed a package of frozen peas and threw it at Jane as she entered the kitchen. Angela then continued, "Janie, what did I tell you about fighting?"
"I know, I know ma. I was boxing not street fighting. My trainer and I agreed I would participate in this competition. I have been doing great with my boxing. He doesn't charge me for my boxing lessons or my time in the gym. I figured I could pay him back by representing the gym in the boxing matches. I won my match tonight with a knockout. So far, I have only lost one match and that was my very first one. I think it is my lucky red socks. Since my second match I have been wearing red socks for every match and I have won every match since then." Jane realized she probably shouldn't have said that because she knew her ma would ask her more questions.
"That is great that you won sweetheart, but I still don't like you boxing. Just how many 'matches' have you been in?" Right then Jane's pop, Frank Rizzoli Sr., walked into the kitchen to see what all the commotion was about. Jane didn't get a chance to answer her ma's question before her pop started speaking.
"Oh Janie, you look like shit, what the hell happened to you?" Frank asked as he looked at his daughter's face. He had never seen her look this bad before. He knew it looked worse than it was but still he didn't like to see his daughter with so much damage to her face.
"She was boxing again, Frank, can you believe that. She caught a fist to her face. She said she won her match though." Angela answered for Jane.
"I did win ma, I knocked her out. She just landed the hit to my face before I knocked her out. The doc said my nose is fine, it will heal fine. It will not be disfiguring. The doc popped it back in place for me." Jane was about to say 'and cleaned up all the blood' but thought better of it and continued. "The black eyes will take a few weeks to go away and I cannot box for a few weeks. I have to see the doc tomorrow at 5 PM so I will see how my nose is doing then. The swelling will go down some so the doc can take a better look at it. My nose did get bumped back into place tonight though. The doc just wants to see it when the swelling goes down." Jane said. She didn't lie she did have to see the doc at 5 PM tomorrow night she just didn't say it was a date with a beautiful female doctor.
Jane didn't discuss her sexual preferences with her parents. She figured she would approach that subject when she met someone worth having that discussion with her parents over. So far, she had dated men and women and no one had really caught her attention. She was leaning more towards women though and Maura had definitely caught her attention immediately. There was just something about her that pulled Jane right in.
Jane thought to herself as she went to her room with the icepack on her nose. 'Fuck ya, I have a date with the doc tomorrow. A date with Maura. That is such a beautiful name. Things are looking up Rizzoli. Better figure out something nice to do on the date with the doc. Oh crap! Where do I take a doctor on a date?' Jane looked in her closet to see what she could wear. 'You know what tomorrow I will worry about what I am going to wear, tonight I am going to sleep.' Jane changed into her favorite Red Sox jersey and black shorts and climbed into her bed. She pulled the covers over her body and placed the frozen bag of peas over her nose and eyes. It was cold but she knew the frozen peas would help keep the swelling down.
While Jane was trying to sleep her thoughts were running wild. She woke up in the morning with the perfect idea for her date. Jane wanted to do something that Maura probably hadn't done before on a first date. She is sure her dates always took her out to fancy restaurants for their first date. Jane didn't have a lot of money to spend on a fancy restaurant. She was hoping that Maura would like the plan that she came up with. She didn't want to be like everybody else, she wanted her date with Maura to be memorable. The fate of her second date with the doctor weighed on the outcome of their first date.
At 8:30 AM Jane sent a quick text to Maura:
J: Good morning Maur, I hope you don't mind me texting u so early. I wanted 2 make sure u r not vegan or a vegetarian.
M: Hello Jane. It is okay and no I am not a vegan or a vegetarian. Thank you for asking.
J: U r welcome. Please send me your address l8tr and I will c u at 5 beautiful.
M: Yes, I will do that, looking forward to seeing you later Jane.
Maura smiled, Jane had contacted her. She was excited. She was going on a date with Jane. About ten minutes later Maura sent Jane her address. Jane looked it up and figured out how long it would take her to get there. She didn't want to be late. Jane hopped in the shower. She had class at 10 AM and would be home by noon. She ran her plan for their date through her head and figured she would talk with her mother when she got home from school.
Jane got home just before noon and talked with her mother. Without giving her too many details Jane told her mother about her plan for her date. Angela loved her plan and told Jane she would help her. She couldn't believe how excited Jane was. She had never seen her so excited about a date before. Her ma told her to come back downstairs at 3 PM and they would take care of everything. Jane went upstairs and got her clothes ready. Her ma was going to help her apply makeup to her face to cover up the black eyes. Jane had told her she was seeing the doctor at 5 PM so they had to be careful with the makeup because the doctor had to be able to see her nose.
By 4:20 PM Jane was ready to leave. It was only a 12-minute drive to Maura's house but you could never plan on how the traffic would be. Jane allowed extra time for traffic. She figured worst case scenario she would sit in her car for a little bit. She definitely didn't want to be late, she would rather be early than late.
She had everything gathered that she would need for what she considered to be the perfect first date with Maura. She was dressed in her favorite pair of black skinny jeans with a light blue button up oxford shirt and her black leather jacket and black boots. In her mind she was dressed up. She was not sure what Maura would think but she didn't want to wear a dress. She was not a 'girly' girl and she wanted to be herself. She wanted to be comfortable and that is what she told Maura when she asked via text earlier how she should dress. Jane told her she should wear comfortable clothes, preferably not a dress.
Maura tried to get Jane to tell her what they were doing or where they were going but Jane just simply told her it was a surprise and she would find out at 5 PM. Maura told her you can't blame a girl for trying. Jane laughed at that comment and text her back, "True, c u at 5."
Jane had her hair down. When she met Maura yesterday her hair was pulled up in a ponytail because she was in her boxing attire. She was hoping that Maura would appreciate her wearing her hair down and straighten a little. She loved her curls so she wanted some curls. Her ma just relaxed her hair a little too tame some of the wild curls. Angela knew her daughter was beautiful she was just happy that Jane was letting her help her get ready for her date. Normally Jane wouldn't ask her ma for help getting ready for a date but she needed her help today. This date had to be special. She wanted the date to be memorable.
Promptly at 5 PM Jane knocked on Maura's front door. She had stopped and picked up some white lilies from a nearby florist. She just had a feeling that lilies would be perfect for Maura. She didn't seem like a roses type of lady. Plus, roses were so cliché everybody did that and once again Jane was trying to make this date special. She wanted Maura to feel special.
Maura smiled when she opened the door and saw Jane. She looked so different from when Maura had seen her the day before. "You are so beautiful Jane."
"Black eyes and all huh Maur. You look stunning Maur!" Jane said as Maura invited her in so she could take a look at her face before they left on their date. Maura was happy to see that the swelling had gone down some. She was glad that she was correct about the nose not being disfiguring. The swelling would continue to go down. The black eyes would take time. There was nothing Maura could do about her black eyes.
"Thank you for the lilies, Jane. They are beautiful. I love lilies." Maura reached down into one of the cupboards and pulled out a vase to put them in. She added a little water to the vase before she placed the lilies in the vase and set it down on the kitchen counter.
"That is great Maur, I didn't feel that you were a roses type of woman."
"I'm not. It is very cliché to give roses on a date, especially a first date." Maura stated as she leaned down and smelled the lilies.
"That is what I was thinking also. I guess great minds think alike." Jane smiled as Maura finished with the flowers and grabbed her purse and jacket so they could head out. Maura still had no idea where they going or what they would be doing. She figured food was involved as Jane had text her earlier to make sure she wasn't vegan or a vegetarian. Maura was curious and Jane wasn't giving her any clues at all.
Jane walked them over towards her car but didn't get in the car, instead she opened the trunk and grab a large duffle bag that she tossed over her shoulder. She reached for Maura's hand. Maura let her hold her hand and they started walking. Maura gave Jane a questioning look. "It's driving you crazy not knowing what we are doing right?" Jane asked Maura as she smiled brightly at her. She intertwined their fingers. Her heart was beating faster just holding Maura's hand.
"Yes, well not crazy but my curiosity is on high alert." Maura said as she smiled back at Jane and squeezed Jane's hand lightly.
Jane gave a small laugh and said, "I'll tell you if you really want me to. I just thought it would be better if I just showed you."
"Please show me. I will be fine." Maura said as she placed her other hand on top of their joined hands and looked at Jane. They continued walking.
"You are fine, if I do say so myself." Jane said as she continued to hold Maura's hand and walked her into Boston Common.
"Ha, ha Jane, you are funny."
"I try, what can I say." After a few minutes they arrived at their destination. Jane had picked out a bench that provided them with great scenery and a little bit of privacy. Jane put the duffle bag down and pulled out a blanket and spread it out over the bench. "Please have a seat." Maura looked puzzled so Jane explained. "I figured most of the people that took you on dates probably took you to fancy restaurants. Yes, I want to do that someday but for now I want you to get to know me and I want to get to know you. We can't really do that if we are not comfortable. This is comfort for me and I wanted to share that with you."
Jane reached behind the bench and pulled out a small fold out table and set it up. She placed the main dish on that. The table was small but wide but wide enough to hold some dishes for her. She pulled out two plates and silverware. "I wanted us to be comfortable as we ate dinner and talked. I hope you don't mind and I hope you will be comfortable also."
"I don't mind at all. I appreciate that you wanted our date to be different but yet comfortable. I do want to get to know you, Jane. There is just something about you that fascinates me." Maura said as she watched Jane produce a full meal out of her duffle bag.
"I hope you like Italian. I brought gnocchi and a salad. I brought dessert also although it doesn't look as good as it did when I put it in the duffle bag. I guess it didn't like moving around in the duffle bag. It is still edible though I promise."
"It will be fine Jane."
Jane reached behind the bench and pulled out two TV trays. She set one up in front of Maura and one in front of herself. "You thought of everything didn't you?" Maura asked. Jane just smiled. Jane placed the MP3 player on the table and hit play. She had researched what type of music to play on a romantic outdoor picnic. She found a playlist on one of her streaming services and had it keyed up and ready to play. It was titled 'Romantic Jazz Music.' She had the volume on low because it was meant to be background music. She wanted to talk with Maura and get to know her not listen to music. She felt that the music was needed to set the scene.
"I might have had some help getting things here. I didn't want you to have to try and balance your dinner plate while trying to eat. That might have been a disaster especially for me. I might have dropped my plate of food on my lap and made a mess." Maura gave a small laugh and Jane smiled. She thought things were going great so far.
"I also brought a bottle of wine. A nice Italian Chianti. It pairs nicely with the gnocchi." Jane knew she wasn't old enough yet to drink wine or even purchase it but Maura was. "I hope you like wine. I should have asked. I have water also." Jane was a little nervous because she had made assumptions about what Maura would like.
"I love wine. I am just surprised that you thought about that. I know you are only 20 so someone must have purchased that for you."
"Yes, as I said I had help. I knew you had to be over 21 and probably would enjoy a nice glass of wine."
"Yes, I am barely over 21 but I do enjoy wine. I was raised on wine having spent a great deal of time in France. Wine is like water in France. It is served with every meal. You did a great job pairing this wine with the gnocchi."
"Thank you. My ma lets us have wine occasionally at home with our meals. She says that is how Italian meals are meant to be served. Before you ask, I did help make dinner. I will not take all the credit. My ma is a great cook and she wanted to make sure I made it correctly so she helped me. I am pleased with how it turned out. I hope you like it, not that I am fishing for a compliment, I just sincerely hope you like gnocchi." Jane said a little nervously. She knew her chances at a second date and spending more time with Maura rested on how this meal turned out.
"It looks great. I am sure I will love it, Jane. Please don't be so nervous, go ahead and ask me."
"Ask you what?" Jane was confused.
"If I will go out with you again." Maura said matter-of-factly.
"Will you? I mean will you consider going out with me again?"
"Yes Jane, now that we have that out of the way let's enjoy our wonderful dinner." Jane relaxed and served Maura some salad and gnocchi. She opened the wine and poured each of them a glass. They smiled at each other and had a light conversation during dinner. When they finished their meal Jane turned and sent a quick text and then reached for Maura's hand and they walked around the grounds. They enjoyed talking to one another. It had been a wonderful dinner and each of them had enjoyed it.
After Arianna received the text from Jane she and Angelo had gone to the bench and cleaned up and removed all of items for Jane so she could concentrate on Maura. Arianna and Angelo had seen them together and thought they both looked happy. They were happy for Jane. She deserved to be happy. They wished her face wasn't such a mess but then she wouldn't have met Maura if she hadn't of broken her nose.
Jane and Maura arrived back at Maura's house. They were standing outside the front door still talking. Maura reached for her keys so she could open the front door. Jane looked at Maura as Maura was fishing for her keys when Maura found her keys she looked up at Jane and Jane leaned down and kissed Maura. Maura kissed her back. Jane was overwhelmed with the tingling sensation that was pouring through her body. She felt like she was in heaven. Kissing Maura was great she wanted to keep doing it but she realized they were on Maura's front porch and this was the end of their first date. Jane pulled away as she needed to breathe.
They smiled at each other and Maura asked if Jane would like to come in. Jane responded, "I would however, I don't want to rush anything with you. I want to be around for a long time. You are not a one-night stand for me. I know that might sound like I am expecting a relationship with you, but I am hoping to be in one with you and you are worth taking the time to get to know properly. I don't know if I could control myself right now if I came inside your house. I am not trying to sound honorable or anything. It is just you are special Dr. Maura Isles and I want to get to know you."
"That is honorable Jane and I appreciate it. I do want you to be around also. Thank you for a beautiful first date. Can I cook dinner for you tomorrow night? I just happen to know that you are not boxing tomorrow night." They both laugh at that. "I would love to see you and I don't want to wait."
"I would love that. I have class until four and then I am off for the evening."
"I get off of work at five tomorrow night so how about you come over shortly after five, say about 5:30 and we can talk while I cook dinner. That way we get to spend some time together besides just eating."
"It's a date doc." Jane gives Maura a quick kiss on the lips and said, "Good night Maur. I will see you tomorrow around 5:30." Maura grabbed Jane and kissed her. She wanted to continue and deepen the kiss but she knew she needed to let Jane go and she can kiss her some more tomorrow.
Maura released her hold on Jane and said, "Good night, Jane, sweet dreams. See you tomorrow."
Jane turned and left. She didn't want to leave but she knew she must. She had another date with the doctor and she must get some sleep.
Neither woman got that much sleep as they laid in their respective beds and thought about the other and imagined what it will be like to be together. Both were looking forward to their next date tomorrow.
