I've wanted to do a Danmachi fic where the MC is essentially going against the whole Danmachi society for quite a while.

At first, I set up the MC as someone who reincarnated into the dungeon and basically goes straight into a base-building/Clash of Clans/Dungeon Defence sort of play-through where he just constantly grinds and defeats adventurers. But whilst those elements will still be in there, I decided to make those elements a backdrop for the MC and Hestia as they go through a slice-of-life/political/society-shifting drama kind of story.

So I repeat, the 'Stay Away From My Dungeon' title will be taken to heart; this is not a fic where the MC is in the dungeon nearly 24/7 to grind experience points; this fic will be about the MC grinding social points. Despite his powers, he'll be using them to explore and try to revolutionise the dynamic of gods within the Danmachi world, instead of aiming to just get stronger for the sake of getting stronger.

Part 1: I don't want to mindlessly grind

"Just give me an hour to breathe." Hestia dived onto the couch, groaning in defeat.

Dozens of rejections to become part of her Familia, on top of a stressful day of work; and when she came home to the church, she had no reprieve, for she had been immediately greeted by a letter sitting next to the entrance of its basement. She had been dreading it for the last month; it was from the Commerce Guild.

Dear Hestia,

We would like to remind you that you have an outstanding balance of 10,867,367 Valis and that your payment period is soon approaching. Please be advised that you should pay the interest owed before the deadline, to avoid our penalties—whilst we deeply respect your status as a goddess, it does not exempt you from them.

The deadline for the interest is on the 21st of every month, and in the event that you are unable to pay this amount, you must lodge an explanation at one of our offices as to why or we may investigate into your profile. If you have lack or have lost the ability to repay the interest and the principal by the agreed times, your creditor will be granted the right to make certain requests, specified in your contract, to you and any members of your future Familia.

Sincerely,

Commerce Guild, Exclusive Consultant, Lapis Lazuli

In the name of Athena and Lakshmi, we swear that all our dealings will adhere to truth, trust and fairness.

She had been so certain of herself that she didn't even hesitate to sign on the dotted line, and look where she was now. She didn't even know who this creditor was—that was just another problem looming larger with every passing day.

"I didn't know a mortal's life could be so hard!" She lamented.

Hephaestus had made it look so easy when they descended together. Even poor Miach, relative to Hestia, made gaining a Familia look easy.

Work earnestly, build an honest reputation, attract a lovely child and give them a blessing. Everything would be smooth sailing after that.

Hestia's child, with her help, would have become a super awesome star, carving his legend like the Dianas, Finns or Ottars of this world. They'd go out to perform ridiculous feats of bravery, level up fast, and build a fortune together with her— they'd live in a big mansion just like Hephaestus', attracting so many others; until they were all a big, warm, happy family… just like back in Heaven, so long ago.

Ah, she just wanted to sleep.

She rubbed her eyes; she was not about to cry.

She wanted to dream of those days again.

When everything seemed so simple and everyone was less…

But as soon as she started to fade away on her couch, she heard loud knocks from the church's entrance, startling her as she jumped off the couch. She wiped her face with her forearm and sniffed.

That was strange, she wasn't expecting visitors, not even from the Commerce Guild; and Hephaestus would usually send her a heads up days ahead.

Heading up the stairs of the basement, she turned around at the top and walked through the church hall towards the door.

Pulling it open, she was met with an unexpectedly daunting sight.

It was a gigantic man, dwarfing anyone she had ever met, and a beautiful, purple haired woman wearing a blindfold. The man was carrying a huge bag on his back, whilst the woman was holding a small bag in her hands.

Not even for one second did she mistakenly hope that these two were godsends who happened to come here looking to be part of her Familia.

The man's presence was unmistakeable.

She was looking at a fellow God. But with an appearance like that, she would have remembered a prior meeting.

"Ah, hello!" She greeted, trying to hide her excitement nonetheless. Any chance for forming new relationships outside the stress of work and trying to form a familia was always welcome. "Is there anything I can help you with?"

With a rundown church like this, the only reason any person would come here was for her.

The man looked at her strangely. She pushed back her excitement to respond in kind, examining that sudden look in his eyes. It was shock initially; then it morphed into a fond gaze—warm, friendly, which was why she didn't immediately slam the door in his face like he was a creep, and genuine—but again, she could've sworn that she had never met this God before.

Her moment of examination was interrupted as the man closed his eyes, smiled and waved.

"Hi! Sorry to bother you, you must have been resting." Her heart beat went up just a bit. Yep, if not his body, she would have definitely remembered a voice like that—was it Charm Speak like Freya's? "I was searching around the city looking for a quiet place to settle down temporarily. This church seemed nice and I heard a God was staying here too. Do you own this place?"

"Goodness! Did you just descend?" She asked excitedly, before gasping. "Oh, how rude of me, come in! Come in! You two must be tired if you just came from outside the city." There seemed to be a misunderstanding, but that was no reason to be rude or turn these two away immediately.

"Please, you two, have a seat." Stepping aside, she motioned them in. "Thanks." He replied. They both nodded in gratitude and walked in, but as soon as they passed by her, she noticed something that she missed whilst observing the man.

The woman wasn't a goddess.

No way.

He already had a familia?! She wondered dumbly.

The man sat down on the nearest church pew, with his legs stationed out to the side in the middle of the hallway, whilst the woman remained standing behind him, holding a bag beside her left leg.

"I'm Adir. This is Medusa." He introduced. "And it is very nice to make your acquaintance, Hestia."

So he knew about her already.

"It's very nice to meet you too, Adir, Medusa." She replied, hiding her jealousy, and shame. "Though I think there's something I have to tell you first, I—"

"You're not the owner of this place, right?" He interrupted. "Hephaestus lent you this place, because she hoped that you could find your own footing here. I was hoping that it could do the same for me, I'll compensate you."

Hestia raised her eyebrows. "You're really well informed for a newcomer."

"It's really easy to get the Guild to talk, especially when you're a God. I didn't even have to show credentials, I just have to exist, and they'll bend over backwards to tell me what's what." Adir chuckled. "Though I think that's more because they're scared of what a God might do on their own, than out of sheer respect."

Hestia nodded, a lot of her friends really were troublemakers—capable, but troublesome—so she could understand now why all the mortal organisations acted as they did. But there was one thing she had to clarify.

"I'm really sorry, then." She said sheepishly, rubbing the back of her head. "If you know about Hephaestus, then you should know that I don't have a right to determine who and who doesn't get to stay here, unless they're part of my Familia—this isn't my property. You should go to Hephaestus."

Her last major memory of Hephaestus was the red-haired goddess kicking her out of her mansion to fend for herself, because she had become too complacent, because she had taken Hephaestus' generosity for granted. Hestia knew that Hephaestus was right, and if she wasn't decisive, then Hestia would have simply kept leeching off her until the very last moment, promising and failing to get better; but it still stung.

The point was, she didn't want to assume that she could do whatever she wanted in regards to Hephaestus' things.

But she adopted a cheery expression; she didn't want this first meeting between her and these two to end in a rejection. It was only polite to first direct them to the right places.

However, deep down, she knew that if these two really had no other options, and if they were that desperate, she would allow them into her home—no questions asked; with no need for compensation—Hephaestus wouldn't mind that much.

"But it doesn't have to be here—I mean, look at this place, it's really rundown; you wouldn't like it here at all—there's a bunch of affordable places around here like Pasithea's Hotels or the Hostess of Fertility. They look much better and offer affordable financial plans for newcomers, especially when you've already got a Familia." She looked towards Medusa, who responded for Adir.

"We don't like really like the crowd that's hanging around those places. It's too loud… and smelly."

Hestia blinked at that. She didn't know about that; Pasithea always liked her places of relaxation to be in tip-top shape, regardless of their prices. Though she would admit, the Hostess did seem to be really rowdy even from afar.

Adir laughed, lifting his hand and patting Medusa on the shoulder, correcting Hestia's assumption.

"What she means by that is everyone that gathers around those places has the same 'stench' about them. This is the city of dreams; all the new people, from what we've seen, have that desperate, snobbish air about them, as if they're entitled to making it big if they just loiter around, it suffocates the air."

She looked sideways, whistling awkwardly at that.

"We're not talking about you, or what you used to be, Hestia." He reassured light-heartedly. And when she looked back, she was surprised to see a knowing, warm smile. "We're talking about the 'humans' waving their dicks around pointlessly trying to impress the gods… well, the more renowned ones, anyway."

Hestia's face reddened.

He turned his head around, gazing at the interior of the church; at the things she had bought slowly with her salary—new pews, new paint, new plants, new windows, with only a few old, cracked windows remaining, and that didn't count the stuff in her basement.

"But you've been working sincerely hard to achieve something." Adir had noted Hestia wishful looks towards Medusa.

"It hasn't all been for nothing, you know; people take note of how hard you're trying; we wouldn't be here otherwise."

She sighed. She hadn't expected their conversation to go in this direction—there was still the unresolved matter of his desire to stay here. But deep down, she was kind of glad it did; she'd been wanting to talk about this ugly helplessness she was feeling, but it was too embarrassing if she spilled it to her friends.

Unlike Hephaestus or Demeter though, or Heavens forbid Loki, Hestia had nothing to lose if Adir judged her.

"A lot of times, it feels like it." She sat down on the pew beside him. "No matter how much I work, or how much I beg, nobody wants me." It was a pathetic thing to hear from a Goddess, but the privilege to act proud had been beaten out of her quite some time ago. She was just lucky her friends didn't intentionally seek her out often.

She looked at Medusa, for the umpteenth time, who remained stoic at the goddess' fervent gaze.

"How did you do it so fast, Adir? I've been trying for so long to get someone to join me, and here you are, probably not even a day passing in Orario, and you've already got a member." The comparison made her feel so small, and useless.

The male god hummed.

"Well, it's a lot simpler than it looks." Hestia shrivelled up deep inside, but the god hadn't finished.

"You just have to ask the right questions." She looked to him curiously. That was far too simple an answer—honestly, she was kind of expecting him to brag about some super-duper passive ability of his that translated well to the human world, like Hephaestus's blacksmithing knowledge or Freya's good looks.

"What kind of Familia do you want to build? What kind of people are you looking for? Where should you look for them? Things like that; you need to have pinpoint focus."

No, that couldn't be it.

"I already know the answers to those questions." She rebutted. "It's why I have been wandering around streets of cheap wares where new adventurers usually hang out. I want a Familia of awesome adventurers!"

Adir shook his head.

"Do you want to build a Familia of adventurers" He leaned in towards her. "Or do you think you should want to build a Familia of adventurers?"

Hestia stilled at that.

She didn't say anything for a while.

Those words struck a chord in her that she didn't even know existed.

Did she want adventurers, specifically?

She had never actually seriously pondered those words before; her desire to gather adventurers just kind of popped up one day… but why? But then she remembered, all the most famous Familias were those comprised of adventurers—not just the explorer types, but even the ones that weren't directly related to combat, like Hephaestus' or Athena's.

A god couldn't succeed all the way to the top without adventurers, she wanted to rebut… but she stayed silent even more. Did she actually need to go to the top?

Adir's questions had opened a hole, dragging Hestia deeper and deeper rapidly, because she had been unprepared to climb down.

To her, having spent months hanging around and pining for them, adventurers just became a 'natural' part of life.

It was actually kind of embarrassing that his words had stumped her so easily.

And then her stomach rumbled.

Her face grew rapidly red, as Adir chuckled. Medusa stepped towards her.

"It's nearing dinner time. It might be presumptious of us, but would you allow us to join you for dinner? We bought something we thought you would enjoy." She held up the bag, and Hestia could smell it, before she could even see what was inside it.

It was roast chicken.

She salivated, forgetting her embarrassment and her weakness. She stood up and immediately grasped Medusa's hands in gratitude.

"Not at all! I would be honoured to host you both. Dinner is best enjoyed with friends!" Hestia exclaimed excitedly. Finally, something other than fried potatoes!

It was, without exaggeration, literally the best news she had heard in weeks—until she heard Adir's next words.

"We know you said this isn't your property, we'll compensate Hephaestus in the future, but knowing someone of her stature, she's going to be neck-deep into business, and she'll be too busy to attend to us strangers immediately. So, while we wait," He took a small bag out from his jacket and shook it. She heard a familiar sound that tugged at her heartstrings alongside the smell of food. It was money. He threw it at her, and she caught it, opening to confirm its contents.

It really was money—coins and licensed bills—maybe 100,000 valis worth. She looked to Adir and Medusa, awestruck.

"There wouldn't be any harm if you hold onto our rent, on top of… let's say, a wage for giving us the honour of being our companion/guide in this strange new world. That is, if you would allow us to stay—how about it, Hestia?"

There was no hesitation. She thought she would have the willpower to act modestly and humble, rejecting this generosity for the sake of her honour as the Goddess of Hospitality—but not after the weeks she had endured.

She walked up to Medusa, and hugged her, startling the woman.

And then she turned to hug Adir, who patted her head affectionately.

She held both their hands and beamed up at them.

"We're going to be the best of roommates. And the best of friends!" Hestia declared.

Adir smiled at her, he seemed to be equally as enthusiastic as her.

For some reason, and perhaps Adir did too, she felt that those spontaneous words weren't going to be an exaggeration.

She missed this feeling of companionship. And this time, she wouldn't take it for granted.

XXXXX—Adir POV—XXXXX

So I could lie to a god. And it seemed those blessed by my Falna could too.

My Game had reassured me, but I hadn't been sure. After reincarnating, I had spent months having no social interaction with beings that weren't under my control; and I had been playing a Game of an entirely different genre until today.

Medusa and I were in a room at the back of the church—having just purchased some supplies that would make us comfortable for the rest of our stay here—including actual beds, one for Medusa and I; another for Hestia, much to her embarrassment and delight.

It took ages to find everything and bring them back inconspicuously to the church. I didn't want rumours or interested eyes just yet.

She had rejected initially, but had relented when I had argued that a proper bed should be a right, necessary for maintaining the best version of herself when recruiting, and that if she felt that strongly about it, she could repay me in the future.

There were a lot of other things I wanted to buy for her, but that would be taking things too fast—Hestia and I had only just met.

"So this is the goddess you said we can trust." Medusa noted.

She was lying on her front on top of the sheets, naked and no longer wearing her blindfold. My Falna was on her back, and I was inspecting it after having updated it, hovering over her, trapping her between my knees.

"Yeah, she's adorable, isn't she?"

Medusa hummed, not saying anything about that. But I could sense her jealousy.

I wouldn't address it yet, though.

"How are you holding up, Medusa? Are you getting used to your human body yet?" I asked, burning the paper. It wouldn't do now to leave evidence.

She turned around under me, shamelessly tempting me with her tits, as she rubbed my thighs.

The little minx.

"It's not the body I'm getting used to. It's this situation. It's strange to be around this many surface people and not have any of them attack me."

"I told you it'd be fine." She nodded, but she grimaced a bit.

"But why is this necessary? Playing nice with gods and surface people, my instincts keep flaring up. Monsters and mortals, we're not mean to co-exist. We can only fight."

I smiled, silently apologising, as I rubbed her cheek affectionately to placate her. She leaned into it.

"Yeah, I could stay in the dungeon all the time, building up my bases and my skills, but in the end, that'd get us nowhere. If I kept expanding, eventually, that'd get the attention of the High Level adventurers and things would get way too dangerous."

The idea of dealing with adventurer assholes like Canoe or Dix all the time was nauseating.

"I still think you could beat them all. Your powers are tailor made to defeat them down there. But up here, in this human form of yours, we can't protect you nearly as well."

To Medusa, I was first and foremost a Being of the Dungeon. An anomaly, certainly; because despite the monstrous appearance I had reincarnated into, I was not just a monster. I was a human before, and now I had been chosen to be a god. But at the same time, to the members of my Familia, I was emphatically one of them.

As such, we did not belong up here.

But whilst Medusa found the surface and her new form strange, it was the closest thing to my past life.

It felt good to once again roam streets filled with humans in a 'human' body. There were some peculiarities like elves or dwarves, and the fact that my human form was built like Broly. But all in all, it felt comfortable, especially after I had spent a month down in the Dungeon, with no form at all.

I had just been a consciousness, overseeing and managing certain floors from a bird's eye view like I was playing Clash of Clans or some other generic mobile kingdom-building game. That had been awesome at first; but in a way soon after, it was also kind of torturous.

But I shook my head. She didn't care about that.

"I could, but I have way too much at stake now. I couldn't risk you guys that much, in a crossfire that would never end until either us or they were obliterated. You mean too much to me."

I paused at that last bit and she smiled satisfactorily. She rubbed the groin, just around my cock, rewarding but teasing me.

"You were fishing for that, weren't you?" I grinned wryly.

She stared at me lovingly with rosy cheeks.

"Say it again." She whispered. But just for me, was the silent message within her eyes.

I lowered my thighs until my ass touched her flat stomach. I rolled my hips slowly back and forth, teasing her in kind.

Her breath became increasingly sultry, especially when my clothed cock neared her breasts. I fondled them, squeezing them near my cock, humping her, imitating a titfuck. She bit her lip and she reached for the top of my pants, wanting to pull it down, but I backed away, sliding slowly down her body.

When my bottom lined up with hers, my abs squished her breasts, and the top of her head only just reached the bottom of my pecs.

I was too tall, too massive. She loved the way I dwarfed her.

I could feel her hot breath reach my abs.

I took her head and rubbed it against my body, grinding against her, all of her, before I whispered from above.

"You mean so much to me, my pet." I said lovingly, before addressing the fear I sensed earlier, when I was chatting with Hestia. "More than anyone up here. I choose you."

She purred in satisfaction.

And I smiled toothily.

Was she a snake or a cat?

We fooled around in bed for quite some time, not going serious just yet.

For when midnight arrived only minutes later, the ping I was expecting from my system arrived.

Yeah, it was nearing time to finally teach some degenerates that they were better served staying as far away from my dungeon as they possibly could.

I shook my head in response to her question and pulled in her in towards my chest.

"I told you, I pick you. We're up here to make a better life for you, and everyone else down under; that will never change." And Hestia, or my past life, was not enough to change that.

I kissed her deeply.

I loved the way she moaned helplessly, hotly into it.

When we pulled away from each other, her eyes seemed to sparkle at the promise within mine.

"We've got some time left. Besides, I need to make sure you're used to putting that body through some physical work before I let you go hunting." I husked.

She licked her lips at that.

"Knowing you, this'll be more tiring."

Medusa Affection +3; Attraction +5

When her lips joined mine again, I still had one thought before lust consumed me again.

Sorry, Hestia, but I'm not as nice as you think I am.

XXXXX—Hestia POV—XXXXX

Hestia was giddy with excitement. Her happiness from today's dinner just wouldn't die down. It had been so, so long since she last had a real dinner, and with new friends too!

She couldn't stop giggling randomly.

Medusa was a little shy, but Adir had been a complete gentleman and an amazing conversationalist. He really seemed to know what to say and how to say things she wanted to hear. It wasn't anything complicated, it wasn't anything to do with politics or Familia or work or any of that tiring stuff—it was just talk, small talk, relaxing talk… she couldn't remember the last day when a chat with a fellow God didn't involve some subtle or not-so-subtle flexing of status or teasing her about her troubles.

And then the bed, goodness, it felt so good to be lying in a real bed once again.

She could run off this high for the next few weeks, maybe even months.

It was only right that she should repay them in some way.

She wondered how the two were doing up there in their room. Despite their preferences for the peace and quiet, surely, they must have had some reservations in this place.

Were they feeling comfortable?

She had been working so hard, using her salary, to liven up the place. She had wanted, no matter how little, to impress her future Familia—but she had doubts.

Did she do enough to make this feel like a home?

But then she remembered the dinner, the way she, Adir and Medusa sat around the table, smiling and eating happily.

At least to her, at that moment, for the first time, this place really did feel like home.

Though Adir and Medusa weren't her children, it really was encouraging for the future.

But then she heard a thumping sound.

She heard it again… and again… and again.

What was that sound?

Despite how shabby this place looked, the stones comprising it really were sturdy and blocked sound well. If she could hear this sound here, faint as it was, then wherever it came from, it must be extraordinary loud.

It had to be adventurers nearby partying harder than usual. Ey, ey, ey.

Oh goodness, she could only hope that Adir and Medusa weren't too bothered by the noise.

… The thumping sound continued, even louder.

Hestia wandered if she should check up on them… but then again, if it was something serious, Adir and Medusa would come down and let her know—she had said so herself.

Besides, she had talked their ears off enough for one day; it wouldn't do to interrupt their rest because she was over eager.

"yes!"

Yes, everything was fine.

"… me! I love you so much, Adir!"

Okay, she was grateful, but she wasn't that grateful. She willed herself to sleep; her inner voice was going wild on her.

For some reason, her face was all red.

Where did that thought come from?

I hope you enjoyed. And as you probably guessed, this is going to be the opposite of how Danmachi fics usually go. Instead of going to the dungeon to make a better life for himself on the surface; he's going to go above to make a better life for his Familia in the Dungeon. Instead of fighting monsters, he's going to slowly change the surface people's way of life until they don't need gods or they can thrive without the dungeon, which I will slowly unravel as this mostly slice-of-life fic goes by.

Oh, and this Danmachi fic will be an AU version. With my character staying in the city more than the dungeon, Orario, its culture, the organisations will be more fleshed out and very different.

For the purposes of this fic, the MC won't be a full-on anime nerd who knows every crossover element he sees; he'll just be familiar with the Danmachi anime and he won't really know or take special notice of characters like Medusa being a Fate character.

And 100 Valis will be equivalent to 100 Yen or 1 USD.

I've set up a pa tre on, so if you'd like to read the next chapter a week early, all it takes is a dollar.
