The whispers intensified now that everyone had gotten a good look at Harry. Lisa couldn't understand it. No matter where he went, everyone was obsessed with that blow-hard dork. She tried to figure it out. At least at Hogwarts he was famous. He wasn't that good looking or different from any other boy here. The only thing he had going for him was that he was the mysterious new boy senior year, but she was new too and she hadn't gotten the whole school staring at her the minute she walked into school. She just couldn't figure it out. Kathryn Morris, the supposed queen bee was practically swooning. Ok, that deserved an eye roll. She hadn't even met him yet. Hopefully Kathryn had enough sense to get far away from him once she got to know him. The other girls at her table continued to whisper.
"Who is that?" One of them asked
"He's cute" another said
"Wonder if he has a girlfriend"
"C'mon, Maggie, you don't even know his name. You can't start crushing so soon"
"Wonder if he's in our English class?"
"I think I'm already crushing, B"
Their chatter stopped. Lisa watched them in confusion. Now what was causing them to go suddenly silent? They were all staring at her, well not at her, but behind her. She turned around to see what was behind her. Harry Potter was standing there.
"Hi, I'm new here, if you can't tell" he addressed the group. Lisa fought to not roll her eyes at his attempt at charming them "I was wondering if someone could show me where Advanced Latin is?" Lisa was sure that someone's brain was about to explode.
"I can show you," a voice said from behind. "Kathryn Morris, Latin is on the third floor"
"Harry Potter," he said "you don't have to go out of your way for me"
"It's on the way for me" She said
"Well in that case, after lunch, you can show me the way"
"It's a date. Do you want to come sit with me and my friends, so that way I can find you after lunch?" She shot a look at Lisa while saying that.
"Sure" He began to follow her. Lisa felt something drop into her hand as he passed her. No one else saw it. She quickly shoved it into her pocket. She turned her attention back to the girls at her table.
"Hey uh, Bianca, can you show me where the bathroom is?" Lisa asked
"Sure," Lisa got up and followed Bianca out of the cafeteria and to the bathroom at the end of the hall.
"It's here, I can wait for you if you want,"
"I might be a minute you can go back," Lisa smiled at her.
"Oh, ok" She pushed open the bathroom door. The minute she was alone inside, she pulled out the thing that had dropped into her palm. It was a piece of paper. She unfolded the note. Meet me behind the bleachers after school. Do not show this to anyone-HP Lisa rolled her eyes. Of course that bumbling buffoon would have to bother her. Why couldn't she just have a normal year without him ruining everything. She heard someone open the door. Shoot. She shoved the note into her pocket and raced into a stall. She locked the door behind her. She placed her ear against the door. There had to be at least 4 or 5 girls in the bathroom
"He is totally into you Kathryn"
"Of course he is, Dalia, he would be stupid not to be" she heard Kathryn said. The Queen bee, who had been shooting her nasty looks all lunch. She had been nice to her in the office, but Lisa guessed that Kathryn wasn't happy she "chose" to sit with someone else
"You have to tell us more" a girl she guessed was Dalia said
"You spent all of lunch talking about him, you have to have more to say"
"You guys, well if you insist. He has taste, unlike most of the boys in this grade. He is rather charming and he's interested in poetry of all things. You know he went to Highland College before he came here, he was on the football team. And he's sweet on top of that. He's got this look in his eye, it's almost haunted. He's just so dark and mysterious"
"He sounds perfect" another said
"He is" Kathryn swooned
"You know who I saw staring at him?" One of the girls Lisa did not know said
"Who?" Kathryn asked
"That new girl," she whispered.
"Oh please, he's not the type of guy to get with a well, witch with a b." She said. Lisa felt what could only be described as emotional whiplash. Kathryn had been decent to her, and she had been decent back. Now Kathryn was going around calling her a bitch? Well, two could play that game.
"Not that she wouldn't want him too"
"I can't believe she thinks she even has a chance" As if. She would never get with an idiot like him. Besides he had Ginny Wealsey written all over him. Not that she cared, she just couldn't understand what Ginny saw in him. Lisa unlocked and pushed open the stall door. Kathryn and her minions stared at her. Lisa washed her hand and looked up. Kathryn was looking in the mirror, reapplying her mascara. One of the girls was leaning against the sink. She had dark hair and dark hooded eyes. The girl redoing her lipstick on the other side of Kathryn had reddish brown hair. The girl next to her had long strawberry blonde hair.
"Oh, Hi Lisa," Kathryn said with a fake smile
"Hi Kathryn" she said
"How has your first day of classes been?"
"Fine" Lisa's shoulders tense "nice to see you, but I have to go. I have advanced Latin that I just can not miss" She fake grinned. Kathryn's smile fell. Lisa smiled for real this time. She got a pretty good hit back at Kathryn. Kathryn's face darkened. She grabbed her arm
"Back off Turpin" Kathryn sneered. Lisa kept her smile up
"If you're going to be two-faced, at least make one of them pretty." Lisa with a sneer, pulling away her arm. No one was going to threaten her and get away with it, at least not this year. She pushed past her and left the bathroom.
Lisa pulled her bag over her shoulder and left her final class. She stopped at her locker and grabbed what she needed. One of the girls from Kathryn's entourage had the locker next to her. She was whispering to a boy next to her. Lisa tried to listen.
"He's practically drooling over Kathryn" the girls said
"Not surprising," the boy said. "Who isn't?"
"Do you think he'll ask her out?"
"Probably, he would be stupid not to"
"You know who was also drooling today?"
"Who?"
"The new girl, she couldn't keep her eyes off of him" Lisa slammed her locker closed. The girl jumped up at the noise. She turned beet red. She sputtered. Lisa stormed off. She left the building and looked for the football field. The parking lot was mostly cleared out. She saw that the football field was on the other side. She stayed close to the cars that were still present. She made it to the other side of the parking lot. The hair on the back of her neck stood up. Someone was watching her. She caught a glimpse of dark brown hair disappearing behind a car. She slowly creeped over there. She looked around the car. A hand landed on her shoulder. She turned quickly and grabbed the hand. She threw it down.
"Geez Turpin, you look like you saw a ghost" Harry laughed
"Don't touch me, Potter" She growled
"Sorry, I won't do it again" he said "so seriously, what's got you so spooked"
"I thought I saw- wait no. We will not be engaging in pointless small talk like friends because we are not friends"
"Cold, Turpin"
"But True. Number one, you are going to tell me what you are doing here"
"I could ask you the same question"
"Yes, you could, but I asked you first"
"Fine" Harry said "Robards told me not to tell anyone but I think I can make an exception for an old friend"
"We're not friends."
"Acquaintances?" Lisa glared at him "I guess not. Anyway, I'm here on auror business. I'm supposed to be gathering information about a staff member here, who is most likely Theodore Nott Sr. in disguise" Lisa's face paled ever so slightly
"Which teacher?"
"I don't exactly know yet" he admitted
"Great, so when do you leave?"
"You really want to get rid of me. Once I have enough information for an arrest, the Aurors will take care of it from there"
"So I have to wait until you grow a brain and find this guy before you are out of my way?" She said
"Well maybe if I had another pair of eyes looking for him, I'd find him sooner" Lisa's mouth formed an O shape
"No, no absolutely not. I'm not doing it. Keep you and your magic away from me. I just want a normal year without you ruining it"
"C'mon Lisa"
"Look Potter, complete this sentence for me: "I never want to help you-,"
"I never not want to help you arrest Death Eaters" Harry said
"I told you to complete the sentence"
"You never said where"
"That doesn't even make sense"
"Can I at least make you an offer?"
"You are going to, no matter what I say, aren't you?"
"If you help me, I get out of your way sooner, and you get that normal non-magical year you wanted"
"If I don't?"
"Well, I have all year to find him, so I guess I can just take my time-"
"Fine, I'll help you. You will not speak to me during the school day-"
"Unless it's an emergency"
"Oh, I'm sorry. Did the middle of my sentence interrupt the beginning of yours? You will not so much as mention me to your new little friend group. I will not be speaking to Kathryn Morris or her gang."
"Is this because they think you have a crush on me?" He teased her. She rolled her eyes
"Don't make me barf. Besides, you have Ginny Weasley tattooed all over you. Number three, I'm not talking to anyone from your world and no magic whatsoever"
"Our world Lisa" He said
"Your world" Lisa said forcefully
"You are still a witch" he said
"No, I'm not" she said
"Is that all?" He asked sarcastically
"Yes"
"Ok, so we have a little problem. If you want to help me-"
"I don't want to help you" she said
"Fine, get rid of me. You need to play nice"
"What?"
"Avoid snide comments, insults,-"
"When have I ever not" she said
"I heard about this morning in the parking lot and your confrontation with Kathryn in the bathroom"
"Those were justified" she said
"What about your incident with Padma and Mandy?"he asked. Lisa's face darkened. A memory gripped her, one she preferred not to think about.
It had been a meet up for the Ravenclaws in her year. It was right before she decided to go to Crestview. She remembered Padma and Mandy taking her outside at some point. She hadn't spoken to them since the battle.
"We need to talk Lise," Padma had said
"About what exactly?" Lisa asked
"You've been avoiding us for months" Mandy had said
"I'm not avoiding you guys"
"Then why haven't you spoken to us since the battle"
"I've had a lot of stuff on my plate. Dad and Mum went back to work and someone has to take care of the twins"
"We know you haven't been taking care of them Lise" Padma said
"Uh huh, sure"
"Your brother told mine that you've been spending all of your time in your room, you've been sleeping more than usual, you haven't been sleeping and you never have any energy" Mandy said
"He also said your haven't cast a single spell since then"
"Ok so? I had a crazy year. I needed a break"
"That's not what this is Lise," Padma said
"You don;t know what it is, Padma." Lisa had spat
"We were at the battle together, it's normal to have some problems after something like that"
"And you too seem perfectly fine" Lisa mumbled to herself
"We are trying to help you Lise," Lisa couldn't quite remember exactly what she had said. She did remember Mandy crying and Padma slapping her. She had submitted her final fro for Crestview that night.
"How do you even know about that?"
"Padma told Pavarti, Pavarti told Hermione, Hermione told me" he said with a shrug
"Never bring that up again, you half wit-"
"That is exactly what I am talking about. The minute someone says something you don't like, you try and bite their head off. For you to be able to help me, you need to get along with others. The nicer you are, the more information I can gather, the sooner you can get rid of me"
"And I honestly thought I would enjoy this year." She said venomously
