Lisa pulled into the school's parking lot. There were very few cars there so early on a Saturday. She saw Kathryn's car along with Harry's. She bit her lip. Last time she had spoken to him or Kathryn. She had screamed at him about the Carrows and his world. She hoped for dear life that she would not end up alone with him. That was the last thing she would ever want to talk about. She would just have to stick close to Reagan and Noah. She got out of the car and slung her backpack over her shoulder. If she was going to be forced to go to detention, might as well get her work done. She walked into the school's library. Kathryn and Harry were sitting at one table, Noah was sitting at the table across from them and Reagan was sitting at the table behind him. The teacher was standing at the front desk.
"Name?" He asked her
"Lisa Turpin" she said
"Take a seat Miss Turpin." He said. Lisa took the chair next to Noah. He flashed her a smile.
"Right now that everyone is here, I will be passing out your assignment. You all will be writing lines assigned by your teacher. You will have to copy them a hundred times before you may leave." He said. Lisa froze. Of course it had to be lines. She glanced at Harry, who seemed a little paler than he had before.
"Now that you all have your assignments, I will leave you to get started. You may sign out with me when you are done." He left the main library and headed into one of the offices. Lisa stared at her paper. Maybe she should wait, see if Kathryn or someone's hands started bleeding before she started.
"You ok Lisa?" Noah asked
"I'm fine. I really don't like lines" she said
"Is there anything I can do to help?" He asked. She shook her head "do you want me to start first to make sure it's safe?" He teased
"Actually if you don't mind, could you?" She asked
"Yeah of course. I got it" he said. He began to write. Luckily, no words were suddenly carved into his hand. Lisa took a deep breath and read her linee. "I will not disrupt class." She wrote the first line. This was fine. She was fine. She wrote the lines again. Noah looked over her shoulder.
"Looks like we are line buddies" he said
"You got 'I will not disrupt class' too?" Lisa asked
"Yup and only 95 more times to go"
"I still have 98" she said
"Hey, Potter. What do you have to write?" Noah asked
"I will not show affection in class," he said. Noah and Lisa locked eyes. They both tried to stiffen giggles.
"Get your minds out of the gutter" Kathryn said
"Come on it's just so stupid sounding" Noah said
"You guys only have to write that? They're making me write 'I will not conduct myself in a crude and improper way'. What did I do that could be classified as crude or improper?" Reagan asked
"Well, you were late, you broke dress code and you got into a fight" Kathryn said
"Because you outed me!"
On the other side of campus, Senior Auror Polly Grey was drumming her fingers against the receptionist's desk, waiting for an answer. The teal haired woman glanced around the room. Her cold grey eyes landed on one of the maginizes. It had the photo of two women who were at least a decade older than her. More than a decade, she realized. They were both in their forties at least. The first woman had dark, pin straight hair and heavily hooded eyes. The second had flawless skin and bright blonde hair. The two of them standing side by side almost reminded her of the photos of Bellatrix Lestrange and Narcissa Malfoy she had seen in their raid of Malfoy manor. Robards had threatened to fire her after that one.
"Excuse me Miss?" The receptionist said. She looked Grey over. Her eye's stopped at Grey's brown skin, teal hair, pink streak, her leather jacket and her dragon tattoo, partially visible at her collar bone.
"Yes?" Grey said
"Can I help you?" She said apprehensively
"Yes, actually. I'm here to pick up Harry Potter from detention."
"And you are?"
"His aunt," she lied. The woman looked unconvinced
"I have a note from his father, if you need it. Or I could just call him-" she lied again.
"No, no that's not necessary. I'll take you to him" Grey grinned to herself. Her idea for Harry to be the son of some made up rich guy who was too important to deal with something as mundane as a phone call from his son's school was going perfectly. The woman led her down the long hallway, before stopping at what Grey guessed was the library.
Harry currently found himself sitting between Kathryn and Reagan to keep them apart. Noah had suggested that he move to keep them from fighting. It seemed to be working. For now anyways. Kathryn kept trying to reach for his hand. He kept moving it away. She looked up at him. He fought back an eye roll. He found himself being able to stand her less and less. He hoped he found Nott soon. He couldn't wait to get out of here. A woman he recognized as the receptionist stepped into the room.
"Mr. Potter, your aunt is here" she said. Grey stepped out from behind her. Harry tilted his head quizzically. The others looked confused. The receptionist left, leaving Grey.
"That's your aunt?" Kathryn asked, shocked and slightly disgusted. Harry bit back a cutting remark.
"Harry, we have to go" she said impatiently
"Er, right sorry" Harry grabbed his bag. He followed Grey into the hallway. She closed the door behind him. He checked to make sure the hallway was empty.
"What are you doing here?" He hissed
"I needed to get to you" Grey said sharply
"Why? Has something happened to Nott?" Harry asked
"No"
"Does Robards need to speak to me?"
"No, you just had a meeting with him"
"Then why are you here?" Harry asked
"I'm pulling you from the case," Grey said seriously. His face fell
"No! I promise you Grey, I'm getting close. I'll have him in a few days-"
"No you won't," Grey said.
"What?" He asked. Ok, sure he was nowhere close, but he could get this.
"You were never supposed to be able to find him"
"But Robards sent me here to find him," Harry said in disbelief. Grey's face fell. She took a deep breath
"Robards sent you here as bait. Didn't you stop to think that you weren't in any sort of disguise? Did you seriously think that Nott wouldn't recognize you?"
"Robards wouldn't do that to me" Harry said "he wanted to give me a chance to prove myself"
"He wanted to catch Nott, Harry. This was never about letting you prove yourself." The full weight of what Grey was telling him was hitting him.
"So I was nothing more than a piece of meat to dangle in front of Nott?"
"I'm sorry" Grey said
"Why are you telling me this?"
"Because it wasn't right. You aren't ready to be out in the field. Robards should have respected that"
"but you told me to prove them wrong"
"In training, Harry. You have had a month of Auror training. You could have never caught Nott. You don't have the skills."
"I was getting close. I know he's using a polyjuice potion. I just need to figure out which teacher has the ingredients" Grey ignored him
"You are in danger every moment that you are here. Nott knows exactly who you are and you have no idea who he is. We are lucky that you are still alive at this point"
"So you don't believe I can do this and Robards just wants to use me as bait?" Harry said. Grey did not answer. His face turned red. He curled his hands into a fist. He reached into his pocket and took out his Auror badge. Robards had given it to him before leaving for the mission. He thought it meant he was one step closer to being an Auror. He looked at it for a moment.
"What are you thinking?" Grey asked. Harry shoved the badge into her hand
"I'm done" Harry said
"Harry-"
"You can tell Robards I'm not a fucking piece of meat"
