Chapter 11: Fire, Jealousy, and Crackle
Six-month-old Chase was bored, there had been no capers since the car caper, things were at a standstill, so he was bored. Being an active man, an active person all his life, with nothing happening at all was boring for him. At least back at Interpol, something was happening every day. He sighed, he'd been having that dream on and off, it worried him, Carmen was going to be in some kind of danger, so he was also tense and a bit snappy, though he tried not to show it. He didn't want to make his friends and Carmen worry.
"Hey Chase," said the lady of his thoughts. She was worried about him; he hadn't been himself ever since their last caper. He lifted himself off the carpet and went over to greet her, his tail wagging. She smiled and hugged him. "Come on, I'm taking you to the vet," she said, clipping on his leash. He was surprised to hear that and tilted his head in question. "You're not yourself and I don't know how to help you. I'm worried about you," she said stroking his head.
Chase's ears drooped, he'd thought he'd been hiding it pretty well, but there was no hiding anything from a thief. "I'm sorry to make you worry Carmen, I didn't mean to," he barked, looking unhappy and apologetic. The last thing he wanted was to cause her to worry, this was his fault.
"Oh Chase," she said, hugging him again and he snuggled into her. He loved snuggles and he loved her, he admitted it, his love for her was growing stronger by the day. Chase knew she had feelings for him. He hoped that once he turned back not a human, there might be a chance for the two of them, assuming she wasn't too upset that he'd been her dog the whole time He hoped she wouldn't reject him after finding out the truth. "Chase, wakey wakey," said Carmen. He blinked, darn it, he'd been lost in thought again. He barked apologetically. "It's ok, but you are the world's strangest dog, I swear you're human sometimes," said Carmen with a laugh.
'But I am,' he thought.
"Come on, let's go. We'll walk there, it's such a nice day and you need your daily walk anyway," said Carmen. He barked and wagged his tail. Carmen told Entrapta where they were going and to tell Bastion once he got back from the shops. Then they left for the vet. It was a nice sunny day with a light breeze, everyone was going about their daily business. People recognised them as Carmen and Chase went for walks frequently and Chase's heroism in saving that girl was still recognised. So, they were greeted on the street by people and that made Chase smile mentally. He was glad that they both had a good reputation. Chase stopped walking to watch a boy that he'd known as a human, Timmy.
"Hey Timmy," said Carmen, waving at him. He waved back but didn't come over, he was afraid of dogs. Chase knew that and didn't go near him at all. He just wagged his tail, not barking because that would scare him. Carmen waved once more before walking off with Chase, not seeing a man drop his still-lit cigarette butt on the dry grass next to Timmy's house as he walked.
About half an hour later they were at the vet's. "Ah, Rena, how are you?" asked Dr. Greeth, who was talking to the counter girl.
"Hi Dr. Greeth, I'm fine, but I came to talk to you about Chase, do you have any time, or is this a bad time?" she asked.
"I've got time, don't worry, today is relatively free. Let's go," he said. Chase and Carmen walked with him and then once the door was closed Chase hopped up onto the table. "So, what's wrong Miss Rouge?"
"Well, it's not physical, that much I know. It started last month, we got back from a job and Chase had a nightmare, he was whining and whimpering and when I woke him up, he launched himself at me, snuggling and he didn't go back to sleep until I hummed a lullaby. He's been restless ever since, he's looking irritated at times, he's been bored, he's always following me around with a worried look and gets anxious when I'm not around; when he can't see me. I think you can see why I'm worried," she said.
"Hmmm, I see. Tell me, what does he do on an average day? Does he have time for play, do you walk him, does he interact well with other people and animals?"
"An average day? Well, we both wake up around the same time, sometimes he's on my bed after comforting me after a nightmare but the majority of the time he's in his basket. I let him out in the garden and make him his breakfast; he has a healthy appetite. I brush his teeth after breakfast, then we just chill, I do my thing and he's free to do his own thing, he has access to all his toys and I'm willing to play with him at any time, if he's feeling energetic, he'll beg me to play ball or tug-of-war. We'll run in the garden and play with the hose as well. Around eleven he'll get his leash and we'll go for a walk; it might be just a long walk, or we might go to the park, which I'll bring his ball or frisbee and we'll play. I'll go over his tricks with him, either at home or at the park. We'll go for a drink at the little café and then we'll go home and eat. Depending on what he's done during the morning, after lunch Chase will take a nap or he'll grab a book from the shelf and I'll read, we love that. He likes listening to my voice. Dinner is served after our evening walk and I let him do what he wants before bed, mainly he'll just sit and listen to my friends, and me talking and give his own input. Before bed, I let him out and then he snuggles down and falls asleep. I bath him every four days; or a week," Carmen explained.
"I see, and when you go and do your work? What happens to his schedule then?"
"It's pretty much the same except when the time gets closer to do our job, we start prepping instead of playing or taking the second walk. He gets fed an hour before each job so that he's not hungry. I also bathe him in the morning each time we have a job since I mainly bathe him at night and our job often takes place at night. When the job is finished, we take the next day to rest up and get back to the regular routine," said Carmen.
"I see. Well, Chase, what's bothering you?" he asked Chase. Chase just tilted his head and barked.
'Nothing to worry about, normal dog right here,' he thought.
Dr. Greeth ran his hands over Chase's body and inspected his eyes, ears, and teeth as well. "I can feel that he's slightly tense in his muscles but other than that he's perfectly healthy. I'd recommend a massage while you're here and well, he might be having nightmares of your past jobs, that's all I can say."
"He's been on jobs before and even when he was dognapped and I got him back he was the one comforting me, he didn't have the symptoms he's displaying now," said Carmen.
"Hmm, this goes beyond my area of expertise. I suggest you speak with our resident animal guru. He's ancient but he's been around animals all his life, he was raised by them, and he can 'see' what they're thinking. He's available at the moment. Another thing you can do is give Chase the spa treatment. It includes a bath with special relaxing oils for dogs, a massage, trimming his nails and his coat. It should help destress and relax him," said the vet.
"What do you think Chase?"
"I think it's a great idea!" he barked. He wagged his tail so hard it was creating a gentle breeze.
"Ok, we'll do both," said Carmen, "First the spa treatment and then the guru."
"Very well, this way," said the vet.
First Chase was taken to the spa, and he got an excellent bath and a massage that made him feel really good. Then his nails were trimmed, they had been getting rather long… His coat was then cut and then he was allowed to relax in the spa room afterwards. 'That was great, just what I needed,' thought Chase. He looked at Carmen who was with him. 'I wish I could let her know why I'm stressed but maybe this guru will help,' he thought.
Ten minutes later the guru walked in, he was indeed very old with a white beard and fluffy white hair, his skin was acorn-brown, and he had red and blue paint on his face and his chest, which was bare. He wore baggy jeans, and his feet were also bare, and he carried a stick with was adorned at the top with feathers and fur. The guru had a feather in his hair and a tribal-type necklace around his neck. His eyes were milky, he was blind, but he wore a smile on his face. "Hello, young ones. I understand that you need my help," he said.
"Uh…yes sir, I'm Rena Rouge and this is my dog, Chase," said Carmen.
Chase barked politely and walked over to the guru, placing his paw into his hand. The guru grasped it gently and shook it. Carmen did the same. "A pleasure to meet you both. I am Guru Knowing Wolf. You may call me Wolf. Now, what is the problem?"
Carmen explained and Wolf nodded. "Very well, I shall enter the Dreamtime with Chase and find out the problem. Come young one, let us go outside and center ourselves."
Chase tilted his head and looked at Carmen who nodded for him to go with Wolf. They went outside and Wolf sat down on the grass in the traditional Aboriginal way. "Sit young one, allow me to help," said Wolf, who took Chase's face once he'd sat down. Chase mentally sighed, he didn't want to do this, but he didn't want Carmen to worry either, this was probably better than going to some sort of dog therapy at least. "Breathe in and out, let your mind relax, set it free," said Wolf in such a calm voice that Chase drifted off into sleep.
Chase blinked, and looked around, he was in a rather odd place. There were pink clouds and blue grass, and the sky and background were a kaleidoscope of colours. He felt peaceful and, but he soon noticed that there was a violet-coloured pond but when he looked into it, he saw that he was not a dog, he was in his human form. He stared; he had not seen his true self in months. He'd bulked up a bit and he felt…well, it was hard to describe actually. "What?" he asked and blinked a bit, he had not spoken in human since meeting with his animal spirit, Kiba the wolf.
"I see," said Wolf's voice, Chase turned to see the old guru standing behind him. "So, you are not dog but man and yet you are not man but dog. Interesting."
"What do you mean? I was always a human before turning into a dog," said Chase, who was confused.
"Many times, for many people the animal in them comes out in odd ways. I see you for who you truly are Chase Devineaux and you have done much good for the world and for the young woman who has captured your heart. A dog is naturally good, loyal and kind, protective and they love unconditionally. Those are some of your strongest traits, but they are also a dog's. As such you are man, and you are dog. Your friend Bastion is lion and man. He is proud, noble, and fierce. Those close to their animal spirits, whether knowingly or unknowingly, they bleed into the human and in your case, your traits of justice, hard work, and stubbornness bleed into the dog. It is rare but it is a good thing."
"So, you're saying that everyone's animal spirit bleeds into their personality?" Chase asked, he kind of got it.
"Not everyone's. Some do not touch their spirits at all, which is neither good nor bad. Sometimes it is, sometimes it isn't."
"But my spirit is Kiba, the wolf," said Chase.
"A wolf is not far removed from a dog, especially a German Shepherd, whose original ancestor was a quarter wolf. Wolfs are pack animals, loyal, fierce, they are hunters, but caring and playful, intelligent, and family-oriented. These are traits you embody as a human. Now forget that one bleeds into the other and remember that you are not influenced by anything other than your choices, morals, convictions, and how you were raised."
Chase was confused but he understood. The animal spirit didn't influence him but since he was so close to the wolf and the dog in personality, it would seem that their traits and his melded together. "I understand now. One question. What animal is Carmen guided by?"
"I believe you know the answer already," said Wolf.
Chase thought for but a moment and then smiled, "She is a fox. There is no other animal for her, cunning, intelligent, playful, a wily escape artist, she can be shy about sharing her past and other things that bother her with others unless she trusts them, she really is a little fox."
"Very good, now what bothers you?"
"I've been having these dreams, Carmen is in danger, she is in a cold place and I'm with her. I'm trying to protect her. A.C.M.E. in the form of my old partner, Miss Argent, Chief and Zari and V.I.L.E. in the forms of the Faculty, they are there, they are standing over her. They want to take her away, from me, A.C.M.E. because they believe Carmen can lead them to V.I.L.E. and V.I.L.E. wants their prize thief back to steal for them. These nightmares, they started a month ago. Am I seeing the future?"
"It might very well be a forewarning of something to come," said Wolf with a frown.
"It's never happened before," said Chase, he sat down in a chair that materialised out of nothing and he frowned. "By the way, where are we?"
Wolf looked amused, "We are in the Dreamtime, a place also known as the Dreaming. It is complicated to explain but the ancient Aboriginal Australians refer to the world-creation as Dreamtime. The dreaming lays down the pattern of life for people. It is also a term used for totemic symbols. Everyone has a totem animal, you and I are both guided by the wolf, both of us use the term Wolf Dreaming. As a boy, I came across a hurt old wolf, and I had no idea how to help him. But he taught me how, while he was injured and that is how I got my name. A child I delivered, a hawk kept circling his house the morning he was born, and my younger friend outran a bear when he was a boy. Hawk and Running Bear were their names. You may ask, did we have names before then, we did, my name was Thomas. The Dreamtime is complicated, and it would take too long to explain in full. Now maybe you can answer your own question as to why you are having these dreams."
"I'm not sure, nothing's changed, things are as normal as ever, yes, there's been a break, a long one that makes me feel very bored, but I am an active man er…dog. That's normal," said Chase.
"Have you had a change in your feelings as of late?"
"I…yes…I realised that I'm in love with Carmen. I know that she has feelings for me, but I can't talk about my feelings, I'm currently a dog and I'm not sure how she'll take it, that her dog is Chase Devineaux. I know all her secrets and almost everything about her and yet, I'm afraid of how she'll react if I am somehow able to transform back. Will she hate me, accept me, be angry? I don't know but I love her, and I'd never betray her," he said.
"I believe that if you find a way to convey your feelings to her without her realising that you are her dog then she'll be fine. She has a large heart. Prove yourself to be loyal, true, brave, and willing to sacrifice much for her and there is no way for her to be angry at you. As for your dream, it could be a combination of things, it could be a foreshadowing of something that is yet to come. Your emotion of love and strong bond to her might have created this. My only advice is to be watchful and wait patiently like a hunting wolf waits for its prey. I can block the dreams if you wish," said Wolf.
"Isn't that dangerous?" Chase asked with a raised eyebrow.
"I am not blocking your ability to dream. I am blocking the nightmare. Once it has come true, the block will be gone," said Wolf.
Chase looked worried at the fact that the nightmare could come true and asked how he could stop it.
"You cannot, what must happen, will happen, but you forget one thing, you will be there, and you will do as you have been doing, you will protect her, and you will save her. I can see that much while here in the Dreamtime. Your strand of fate and Carmen's; are woven together tightly, for many a year. Your fates and destinies became intertwined the moment you encountered each other; this is what I am seeing. Carmen is your way forward in life and you are hers, do not stray from the path you walk," said Wolf.
Chase blushed upon hearing that he and Carmen were basically essential to each other's destiny. He was pleased to hear it, nonetheless. He allowed Wolf to block the nightmare and breathed a sigh of relief afterwards. "Now what?" he asked.
"We go back, and you will be as your dog self once more. Come, Chase," he said, and Chase blinked as he found himself in his dog body once more. He sighed, it had been nice to be human, even if it was only in the Dreamtime.
"Chase?" asked Carmen.
He barked happily, bounding over to her and licking her.
"Chase is fine. The nightmare that torments him is blocked," said Wolf, getting up.
"What was the nightmare about?"
"It was cold. Your enemies, people in both blue and green were there, he was protecting you," said Wolf. "Animals with a strong bond to their owners may sometimes have premonitions, Chase has a strong bond with you, that is why he suffers the nightmare," Wolf explained.
"Oh Chase," and Carmen hugged him tightly, he didn't complain, he just snuggled into her arms. Carmen thanked Knowing Wolf for his help, paid for everything, and then she and Chase left the vet. Carmen telling Chase she was going to let him walk off the leash, but she still told him to 'heel'.
'It must be a new trust exercise. No problem for me. I'd never willingly leave her side,' Chase thought.
As they walked, they soon heard the sound of sirens, and Chase smelt smoke, making him bark in alarm. "Chase, it's ok," Carmen tried to reassure him. He whined but settled down and then they walked around the corner to see a horrifying sight. Timmy's house was on fire!
"TIMMY! TIMMY!" Timmy's parents were screaming, and the firemen were trying to contain the fire but there was nowhere they could get in.
"Timmy's inside!" shouted Carmen in shock.
'Timmy!' thought Chase in horror. 'He could die!' Chase was about to give into his impulsiveness and run in, but he stopped himself and looked at Carmen, going in would worry her and she might try something stupid and get herself into danger. He barked sharply to get her attention, she looked down and he pawed at her leg and looked at the building, whining. He walked two steps towards it and then looked back and Carmen, asking for her permission, his eyes pleading with her.
"What? Chase…" asked Carmen, of course, she wasn't surprised, he had a soft spot for helpless and endangered people and animals but he was asking to go, asking her permission. Carmen bit her lip for a moment as she stared into his brown eyes, they were exactly like Devineaux's. They were once of the reason she loved her dog so much, he reminded her of Devineaux in so many ways.
'Please Carmen,' she heard, and Carmen was startled, she could have sworn that Chase Devineaux was in front of her and asking her but only her dog was there. Why was she even hesitating, Timmy needed to be saved and Chase was the only one who could do it.
"Chase…save!" she told him, pointing to the burning house. He barked and ran as fast as his paws could carry him.
He ran past the firemen and got into the house through the basement window. "Timmy, where are you?" he barked. He listened with all his might as he searched the house.
"Mommy!" he heard a scared shout.
"Timmy," he barked quietly as he crawled towards the frightened child. "I'm not going to hurt you, look, Timmy, I'm your friend," he whined as he gently took Timmy's sleeve in his mouth and started to lead him out of the burning house. "You're safe with me," he whined. Chase led Timmy under a burning beam and around the couch. 'Almost there,' he thought.
Carmen was a bundle of nerves, she was staring at the house, wishing for Chase to appear with Timmy. She was trying to comfort his parents but with little success.
"LOOK!" shouted a fireman and everyone turned to see Chase leading Timmy out of the front door, through a hole that only a child and a dog could fit through.
"We made it Timmy!" barked Chase, his tail wagging nineteen to the dozen as he nudged Timmy toward the fireman who had seen them. The fireman brought Timmy over to his parents and Chase bounded over to Carmen who had her arms outstretched.
"CHASE! You're, ok?" she asked, hugging him fiercely. Carmen was happy that Timmy was ok and safe, but she was beyond happy that Chase was ok too. She and everyone else jumped as the front door gave in at the same time a wire snapped and started sparking. The firemen were on it at once and a doctor was looking Timmy over. Timmy was fine though, apart from inhaling some smoke.
Timmy walked over to Carmen and Chase. "You saved my life, thanks," he said softly, carefully petting Chase.
Chase carefully licked his hand, not wanting to scare him, "You're welcome, Timmy. A dog is a man's best friend," he whined softly with his tongue hanging out in a doggy smile.
"Are you ok Timmy?" Carmen asked.
"Yeah. Thank you," he said to her.
Carmen blushed, "Timmy, it was all Chase. He went in and saved you. I just told him to go and save you. He did all the work."
Timmy still thanked her and so did his parents. They thanked Chase profusely and Timmy even asked his parents if they could get a dog.
"Yes," was the answer. Carmen smiled, at least one good thing had come out of the fire happening.
"We need to go, I think Chase is hungry and thirsty and I'm going to get him a big bone for a reward," said Carmen. The family nodded and watched as Carmen and Chase walked off. "Chase, I'm so proud of you," said Carmen. He barked and wagged his tail. Carmen did stop at the corner of the street and did her best to brush the soot off of him, trying to make him look respectable. "There, that's better."
Chase agreed and was glad when Carmen stopped at his favourite pub, the Lucky Day. It was the one he'd frequented a lot as a human, often going there on his day off or after a stressful day at work. He had introduced Carmen to the pub shortly after his rescue from V.I.L.E. island. Chase had a friend at the pub who knew everything that had happened to him. Coco the parrot. As a matter of fact, now that he thought about it, Coco could be his ticket to letting Carmen know that he liked her.
They walked in and were hailed with cheers. Carmen blinked, "What?" she asked.
"Your dog's a hero!" said one person.
"He's on TV!" said a child.
"Such a good dog," said a woman.
"Well Chase, you're definitely earning a reputation as a rescue dog," said Carmen with a smile. The waitress took them to their usual table.
"Miss Sandiego?" came a voice both of them recognised.
'Miss Argent!' Chase stood in front of Carmen, growling.
"Jules?" Julia looked nervous, looking at Chase and the teeth he was showing. "Down Chase, easy. Stop growling," said Carmen softly, placing her hand lightly on his collar. He stopped but still looked at her mistrustfully. "Hey, what are you doing here?"
"It's my day off, actually. I came to see if Mr. Devineaux was here, he often frequents this place. I haven't seen him here in months. I'm…just trying to check on him, that's all."
"I see, well, I'm here every so often, and I haven't seen him either."
"That's disconcerting, may I sit down?"
"Sure," said Carmen.
Chase was hearing all of this and knew he needed to act quickly. 'Coco!'
'Chase? What's wrong?' she asked, the pretty red parrot, cocking her head at him from behind her curtain.
'I need you to imitate my human voice and another random male voice and have a conversation for me. I need to trick Miss Argent and keep Carmen calm, so she won't worry about me,' he explained.
'Sure, it'll be fun to trick the bookworm,' she agreed.
'Thanks.' Chase came back to reality just before his meat and water were put down in front of him. He barked his thanks and looked at Carmen who nodded. Then he began to eat.
"He's a very polite and well-trained dog. But he doesn't seem to like me," said Julia as she sipped her tea that she'd ordered.
"I taught him to recognise the uniform and you were holding a technical gun at me the first time he met you, I'm sure you can see why he doesn't trust you," said Carmen.
"That's true. I was just trying to do my job," said Julia.
The conversation would have continued into dangerous territory if both women hadn't heard a very distinct voice speak, "I'm glad you are here Twister," they heard, it was Chase's voice!
Chase mentally smirked, his plan was underway.
"Not a problem Chase. So, you wanted to talk about something," asked 'Twister.'
"Yes, there are a few things I wished to say, first, I wish to apologise for worrying you. I have been on a top-secret mission and that's why you haven't heard a thing from me these past months," said 'Chase.'
"I understand, relax Chase, you don't have to say anymore. Top-secret is meant to stay secret after all," said 'Twister.'
"Thank you."
"So, what else do you want to tell me?" asked 'Twister.' "Something about that girl you were chasing, La Femme Rouge? Are you blushing?"
"I…I was wrong about her. I've been able to remember. She saved me from that green elephant. Now that one is definitely V.I.L.E. Carmen Sandiego is not. V.I.L.E. A.C.M.E. is stupid to think that, as was I. That gorgeous woman risked her life and freedom to save me. I was the bait and yet she still came for me," said 'Chase.'
"I see. You're crushing on her," said 'Twister.'
"Shut up! But to prevent you from blabbing it to the world then yes, I have a crush on her."
"You always did like Latina's. So, the uncatchable Chase, the heartbreaker of Interpol, his heart has been stolen by a thief," laughed, 'Twister.'
"Ah be quiet. I cannot help it if she is as cunning as a fox, smart, cheeky, and more gorgeous than the goddess of love and beauty herself," said 'Chase.'
Carmen was bright red, but she was so pleased to hear all of this, he liked her! He knew she'd saved him; he was ok!
"So, then what about the little bookworm you used to hang out with?" asked 'Twister.' "Isn't she into woman? She might make moves on your girl."
"Miss Sandiego is not 'my girl', as for Miss Argent, I can only assume that she and Miss Sandiego will have a lot to talk about if that subject ever comes up. But she is a sensible and smart woman, I'm sure she will not make too much of a fuss if Carmen Sandiego is into men. There are plenty of other fish in the sea," said 'Chase.' "Hmmm, that reminds me, I need to find a way to contact her and apologise for my atrocious behaviour towards her. She was right about Miss Sandiego."
"Anything else, you want to tell me?"
"I will be leaving after this for a while, so do not expect to see me again for a long time," said Chase.
"Gotcha, see ya, Chase," said Twister.
"Take care, my friend," and Coco made the sound of footsteps, walking off to the back door.
'Thanks, Coco,' said Chase to his friend. She'd played her part as him and his friend 'Twister' perfectly, she'd said everything he'd thought.
'Not a problem Chase. That was fun. I'll be happy to help again if you need me,' she said. He nodded and turned his attention back to the two women.
Carmen's blush reminded him of a sunset and Miss Argent looked like she had a bad sunburn, she was so red.
"Um…Jules, you have…feelings for me?" Carmen asked.
"Uh…" she nodded, highly embarrassed.
"Well…I wouldn't have guessed. Honestly, I wouldn't have. I'll be straight with you Jules. I'm into men. I'm also crushing on…someone," Carmen figured it would be easier to say someone rather than say it was Devineaux. She didn't want to create bad feelings between the two of them in case Devineaux ever went back to A.C.M.E. "I met him on one of my capers," she said truthfully.
"I see. I understand. I never wanted you to find out this way but, perhaps it's for the best. I'll see you around," said Julia, who paid for her tea and left. She was slightly upset but it was understandable, and she was pleased that Mr. Devineaux had realised that she was right was intending to apologise to her, somehow. She'd keep this conversation a secret from Chief though.
"Poor Jules, but better to have a clean break of the heart before her feelings developed more," said Carmen. Chase looked up at her and tilted his head.
'I agree, besides, you're mine, my Carmen, I'm the one who started chasing you and honestly, I've never stopped. My La Femme Rouge,' he thought, placing his head on her lap possessively. He'd admit it, he had felt jealousy for a moment after hearing Miss Argent's confession. He didn't need to worry though, Carmen liked him, and it would stay that way, especially now she knew that he liked her.

A few days later Carmen and Shadowsan were in Russia wearing disguises. Chase was waiting outside for them, but he didn't like it.
On the fourth sub-floor Neal the Eel was breaking in, "Neal the Eel to Dr. Bellum. I'm in. Server 6609 located."
"Well done, Neal. You might make Faculty yet," said Bellum.
"Well, I hear there's an opening. And you know how much I enjoy worming my way into those," said Neal. He plugged in a drive. "Searching database. And Bob's your uncle."
"I have seven uncles, none of whom are named Bob," said Bellum.
"It's just a turn of phrase lov0, love. Means, 'I found it."

"Download complete. Is that direct enough for you?" asked Neal, who then saw Carmen and Shadowsan walk in. "Do svidaniya, comrades!"
"I will take the Eel." Said Shadowsan.
"I'll take the server," said Carmen. They both ran in different directions. Carmen using her lipstick hard drive. "Player, uplink's live. See if you can retrace Neal's slimy trail," she said.
Meanwhile, a chase and fight were going on between Shadowsan and Neal. "Ah, Instructor Shadowsan. When they told me you defected over to the red side, I didn't realise they meant Russia."
"I will take the data."
"You will try," said Neal, slipping out of Shadowsan's grasp. Shadowsan raced after him and caught him with a grunt. "Oh, pretty slick. But I'm slicker!" he said, tripping Shadowsan up.
"Aah!"
"Hey, get a grip," said Neal. "Do you mind if I vent?" he asked before escaping.
Shadowsan growled. Carmen came up to him. "Next time, we make a passport for Chase too," said Shadowsan.

Everyone was doing something while waiting for Player's diagnosis. Carmen was sitting at the laptop, Bastion and Entrapta were working on a new project and Shadowsan was drinking coffee. Chase was sitting with Carmen.
Player appeared on the screen, "It took some serious decrypting, but I pinpointed what V.I.L.E. was after. Technical specs for an experimental electromagnetic pulse generator codenamed, "Trip Wire," he said, "The Russian government attempted to design the next generation of EMP device, long-range with ultimate pinpoint accuracy."
"Attempted to?" asked Carmen. Chase also barked in question.
"Yep. They couldn't crack it, so Trip Wire was shuttered," said Player.
"Dr. Saira Bellum thrives on solving the unsolvable," said Shadowsan.
"And if she manages to engineer a working prototype from the stolen plans V.I.L.E. will possess the means of disabling any electrical grid in the world, from anywhere at any time," said Carmen.
"That means they can cause instant blackouts under the cover of the dark, with no witnesses," said Bastion, looking up from his work.
"Creating power outages that would shut down security systems and allow V.I.L.E to steal without getting caught," said Carmen.
"Sounds like the ultimate crackle rod," said Player. "Any chance the electrician formally known as Crackle is involved?" asked Player.
Chase's ears pricked up at this, who was Crackle? And by former, did that mean he had his memories wiped? Chase listened carefully.
"Crackle has no memory of ever being associated with the Villains International League of Evil," said Shadowsan.
"My old classmate Gray suffers from amnesia which we now know was caused by Dr. Bellum," said Carmen.
"Fair enough. So, what's the caper?"
"What else? We disable Bellum's prototype before she can use it, and delete the plans so she can't rebuild it," replied Carmen.
"Good plan!" barked Chase. Carmen patted his head.
"Judging from the involvement of Neal the Eel, Dr. Bellum's base of operations for this project would most certainly be her laboratory in New Zealand," said Shadowsan. "I must caution you. The laboratory is Dr. Bellum's highest-security facility."
"Shadowsan's not kidding. I just pulled it up on the V.I.L.E. hard drive. The place is a fortress. To even get near Bellum's computer lab you'd have to cross a series of four electrical fields with a fail-safe. If more than one field is deactivated at any given time, the entire building goes into lockdown," explained Player.
"I'm guessing that being a ninja doesn't help?" asked Entrapta, looking at Shadowsan.
No, it doesn't Entrapta. Moving unseen among shadows is one thing. Passing through high-voltage electricity, entirely another," said Shadowsan.
"Bellum's lab does have one vulnerability. It draws all its power from a nearby electrical substation. If we get into the substation, we can manually shut down the fields, grid by grid."
"So, my movements would need to be perfectly synchronised, like a dancer."
"Or else barbecue ala Carmen," said Bastion with a frown.
"Player; are you going to take down the fields?" asked Entrapta.
"No, we can't risk the server lag or any voltage spikes that might blow a fuse. We would need someone on sight who really knows their electric," said Player.
"Crackle was the finest criminal electrician V.I.L.E. ever had," said Shadowsan.
"Gray's out of the game. We can't pull him back in," said Carmen.
"Not even to play for the good guys?" asked Player. "We know he has stage lighting experience."
Chase was not liking where this was going. Gray sounded like he was important to Carmen…'How important?' he wondered. 'Were they just friends, a teenage romance, what?' he found jealousy bubbling up in his body. 'Carmen loves me! She's my l' amour!' he knew he was being unreasonable, but it hurt to think that there might have been someone else before him. He let out a bark, causing Carmen to look at him.
"Chase?" she asked. He reared up and hugged her, his head on her shoulder. "Chase, what's gotten into you?" she asked, hugging him back.
"Chase may be uneasy, we keep on mentioning Crackle and Gray," said Bastion. He and Shadowsan were taking note of his behaviour. 'He's never met him and only spends time around Shadowsan and I as prominent males in your company. You also mentioned V.I.L.E. and Crackle together. Chase knows that V.I.L.E. are the bad guys. It's word association for a dog, he probably thinks Crackle is a bad guy," Bastion concluded.
"Oh, you don't have to worry Chase," said Carmen. He looked at her, not believing her.
"Just who was this Crackle guy to you anyway?" asked Entrapta.
"He was my best friend back on the island during school. His real name is Graham, I nicknamed him Gray. He tried to get me to come back on the train to Paris. I told him my story, he still wanted to take me back. I knocked him unconscious and left him in my hat and coat. I'm sure that Devineaux found him," said Carmen. Chase's eyes were wide. The young man in the blue jumpsuit was V.I.L.E.…now-former V.I.L.E. but still… The way things happened, damn…the world worked in strange ways.
'Guess that means I have no rival for her affections since he has no memories of her,' he thought. 'Unless…she still likes him…NO! She likes me, she's had a crush on me since the beginning,' he argued with himself.
"That's why V.I.L.E. took away his memories, he got caught by the law," said Player.
"This is nice and all but who was he to you, Carmen, you said he was your best friend, was he ever more than that to you?" asked Bastion.
"He was the big brother I never had. Fun-loving, loves animals and goofy, proud of his hair though. It was the five of us, Tigress was the princess older sister whom I had a rivalry with. La Chèvre was the snooty older brother, a bit cold but decent once he got to know you and then El Topo, the kind, zen big brother you went to for problems. Then there was me, the annoying, talented little sister that everyone couldn't help but love. All of them were the siblings I never had. I still feel that way no matter what they do. Gray is…was my brother and I don't want to drag him back into danger," said Carmen. Chase breathed a sigh of relief, he had never had any competition, thank goodness.
"That explains a lot," said Entrapta.
"Thanks, Carmen, so back to business," said Bastion.
"Wait! I have a question!" said Entrapta.
"What is it?" asked Shadowsan.
"They may have been siblings to Carmen but did any of them have feelings more than that for her?"
Chase barked, "Good question Entrapta!"
"La Chèvre and El Topo are together, so don't worry about them. Tigress confessed in a game of truth or dare that she was into guys and would never look at annoying, bratty, little sister that way, so she's good," said Carmen with a smile.
"And Crackle?" asked Entrapta, who was now hanging upside down with her hair and using a wrench on one of the pipes.
"He always referred to me as kiddo or sis or Black Sheep, he never gave any indication that he liked me in any other way other than a little sister." Chase was relieved to hear that.
"I hate to break it to you Carmen but considering that he no longer has his memories of you as a sister anymore he might see you as…girlfriend material, someone to date now," said Bastion, he was keeping an eye on Chase's reactions as was Entrapta. Chase's eyes were wide as he realised this truth and was about to snarl when he remembered that he had no reason to but Shadowsan, Entrapta, and Bastion had all seen his reaction.
"What?" asked Carmen, the thought had never occurred to her.
"He has a point Red," said Player. "He did ask you to join him for coffee the last time."
"How dare he!" Chase barked, jealousy in his tone and mind, startling them all. Carmen knelt down and started petting him, soothing him.
"Easy Chase, easy. Player, you know full well that I ditched that. I didn't need him knowing more about me and I want…as his sister, to keep him safe," said Carmen.
"Well, you've satisfied our curiosity," said Bastion with a grin, "So it's always been Chase Devineaux for you huh?" he asked slyly with a grin.
Carmen blushed, "Yes, it has, can we drop this subject. We need to plan for the caper, and if Bellum were to lay eyes on Gray his safety would be comprised." she said, sitting back down. Everyone nodded. Chase was relieved that it was cleared up but if Crackle saw Carmen again…what would stop him from making a move? His eyes narrowed, if he tried anything he'd be there with his teeth.
"Two completely different locations, remember? Problem solved," said Player.
"Alright," said Carmen. "We'd need a cover story. Gray can't know what he's actually doing."
"You'd also need someone to keep an eye on him in case he bolts if something goes wrong or if he gets too curious for his own good," pointed out Bastion.
"I have an idea," said Entrapta with a smile.
"Well, lay it on us," said Carmen, who also smiled.
"Bastion could look after him. As for a cover story, how about a show, like a ballet. That's why I suggested Bastion to keep an eye on Gray, Bastion did ballet, just like Chase Devineaux," said Entrapta.
"What?" asked Carmen. Chase wanted to smack his face. Why did she tell them that?
"Why do you think he has so much stamina?" is all Bastion asked her. She had no reply. "He's a real man to do ballet. Of course, the rest of his stamina comes from doing track and exercising in general."
'I'm going to kill them both, slowly, painfully, with less flexibility than before,' thought Chase, he wasn't very happy with his two best friends at the moment.
"Uh…nice to know but, that's not what's important right now. What's the rest of your plan Entrapta?" asked Carmen, who was now sporting a bit of a blush at image of Chase Devineaux in a leotard. Her blush grew larger.
"Oh yeah, my plan. Sorry. Anyway, Bastion keeps tabs on Gray for you and you and Chase do the deed," said Entrapta, she went on to explain that they'd use the ballet music to help Chase and Carmen time their movements to cross the electric fields. "I'll create a simulator so that you and Chase can practice before we leave," she said. Carmen nodded, saying the plan was a good one. They put the plan into action, Chase and Carmen practising before they left for New Zealand. They went through the usual facts about the country, but Chase was distracted since he was going with Carmen to Australia to recruit Gray.
"Well, there he is," said Carmen, staring at him from across the street. Chase looked at him, he looked like a nice guy, but he'd once been V.I.L.E., and he could still be V.I.L.E., a sleeper agent. Chase didn't trust him. He growled. "What's wrong with you Chase? You haven't even met him," said Carmen. He just growled again but stopped when they got closer.
"You're late," said Gray when he saw them.
"Fashionably, I hope. Look, I'm sorry I had to leave before we could have coffee the last time, stuff with work came up," she said.
"Understandable. So, who is this?" he asked, looking at Chase who was sitting by Carmen.
"This is Chase, Chase this is Gray, say hello and shake," said Carmen.
"It's Graham and nice to mee you Chase," said Gray, holding out his hand.
Chase wanted to bite it instead, upon hearing that he'd asked Carmen to have coffee with him he felt very jealous. But Carmen would be very angry with him if he did bite him, so he reluctantly held out his paw. Then, he used his strength to pull Gray down to his face level and growl at him in warning.
"What the?" he asked, looking shocked, sitting back in his chair.
"CHASE!" said Carmen, shocked at his behaviour. "I am so sorry, he's not normally like this," she said, grabbing Chase's collar.
"I…see. No worries," said Gray, brushing himself off.
Carmen frowned, why was Chase acting this way and then remembered that Bastion, and everyone else had warned her that Chase could act in jealousy and protectiveness, considering Gray's name was associated with V.I.L.E. "Sorry, I think he's…jealous, he's not used to sharing me with another guy, except for my...adoptive father and my one roommate. He's actually a real sweetheart," said Carmen.
"Oh, I see, well, can't fault him for that then. If I was a dog and had you for an owner, I'd be jealous too. It's ok Carmen, I'm not upset, a little shocked but I understand where's he coming from. There was cat I knew that always interrupted my co-workers' dates. So don't worry about it. Now, what can I do for you?" Carmen sighed in relief and asked him if he'd help her. Gray agreed and asked if she'd like to have a coffee with him afterwards. Chase growled. "I'm just being friendly boy, nothing else. I have no ulterior motive. We're just friends," he said, holding his hands up.
They left after that, Carmen looking down at Chase, "You really do have a jealousy issue, don't you?" she asked softly. Chase sighed, and looked up at her and whined a bit, his ears now flat on his head. He'd just reacted, he hadn't thought. Carmen sighed, "It's ok, you always have had a rough time accepting other guys. You were edgy around Shadowsan for a while, and you never really liked Zack. As a matter of fact, the only guy you've allowed to be physically close to me without you showing your teeth, is Bastion," said Carmen. She was right, Chase acknowledged.

It was night-time in New Zealand and Gray had just arrived. He saw Carmen, Chase and a man he didn't know standing with them. "Nice to see you Graham," said Carmen with a smile. "This is my roommate that I mentioned, Bastion. Bastion, this is Graham. Bastion will be helping you out, you'll be staying here to man the controls alongside Peter and Bastion will be able to go and check on things if there are any difficulties," said Carmen.
"Alright, sounds simple enough. It's nice to meet you Bastion," said Gray.
"Likewise," he said, shaking his hand. Bastion looking him up and down. He seemed like a nice guy, and he could see how Carmen would gravitate towards him as an older brother figure. "Well, let's do this," he said, leading Gray inside.
"Good luck you two," said Carmen with a smile. She walked off with Chase, who turned his head to look at Bastion and Gray and hoped that things went well.
Xxxxx
Entrapta met the two of them after disabling the security for them. "Good luck," she said, she'd be staying outside on guard duty.
"Thanks," whispered Carmen. Chase gave a quiet bark, and they went in.
Xxxxx
"Oprah, ballet, I hope next time I'm asked to help a Rock 'n Roll concert," said Gray to Bastion.
'Unless it's something like KISS, I'd take ballet over a bad R 'n R concert," said Bastion. He pointed to the screen, "Showtime," he said.
"Gotcha," said Gray, he began and Carmen and Chase, with the music of the little swans in their ears, began to time their movements into getting in.
"Ok Red, Chase, here it comes," said Player as they entered the electric floor area. "Get ready."
"Ok Chase, here we go," said Carmen quietly and he nodded, looking at her briefly before focusing his attention back on the music and the floor.
"Ok, ready?" asked Bastion, watching the screen, his nerves not showing on his face.
"Ready mate," said Gray. He began to move the sliders to the pre-recorded music and images.
Xxxxx
Carmen and Chase danced their way across the floor, in perfect sync with the music and each other. They made it without incident. "Whew, we did it, nice job Chase. A nearly electrifying performance. Player, we're good."
"I'll let Gray know," he said.
Xxxxx
"Alright mate, take five," said Player's disguised voice to Gray and Bastion. Bastion breathed a sigh of relief and Gray grinned. Bastion remained behind Gray in case he had to nerve him and to be closer to the door in case nerving him didn't work.
Xxxxx
"And we're live," said Carmen, placing her lipstick flash drive into the computer.
Xxxxx
"Ok, searching for project Trip Wire files. Located," said Player. "Scrubbing database and goodbye stolen tech."
Xxxxx
"Off to find Bellum's prototype," said Carmen with a smile, "Let's go Chase." He followed her out but started growling, causing Carmen to stop.
Neal was standing there, waiting, "Of all the sheep in New Zealand to wander it, it had to be a black sheep," said Neal. "Remember me, Neal. You were the island mascot," he said.
Chase growled; hackles raised. 'So, this is the eel, his stinks, it must be whatever is on his suit,' Chase thought.
"So that's the dog that's been giving V.I.L.E. a hard time. Well, I'll admit, he is a handsome one, but that won't stop me from stopping you," said Neal, who started running towards Carmen and Chase. He kicked Carmen's leg out from under her, causing her to grunt. Neal flipped backwards. Big mistake. Chase bit him on the arm. "Blimey! Call him off, call him off!" said Neal, trying to break free of Chase's grip.
"Not even you can slip out of his jaws. Ok, Chase, hold him until we're ready to go," said Carmen. Chase just wagged his tail. There was no way he was letting Neal go. Carmen got into position. Chase dragged Neal with him, also getting into position.
"Hey, how did you slip in here anyway?" asked Neal, who despite the pain of having his arm clamped in Chase's jaws, could still form a coherent sentence. "You part eel?"
"Time for that encore," said Carmen to Player.
Xxxxx
"Ok Graham, curtain call for, "Dance of the Little Swans."
"Already?"
"I know right, right? Crowd's going wild!"
'Let's just hope that nothing goes wrong,' thought Bastion.
Xxxxx
Chase got the nod from Carmen and let Neal go. He and Carmen leapt across the field. Neal was wincing and holding his arm, but he chased them just the same. Carmen and Chase worked together and pinned him to the floor.
"Are you mad? You'll fry all of us!" shouted Neal. Carmen threw him into another part of the floor where he got trapped.
"Hold faders now," said Carmen to Player.
Xxxxx
In his false accent, "Graham, lock faders in current position," said Player.
"Wait, what?" he asked. Bastion tensed; he might have to do some damage control here.
Xxxxx
"I'd stay put if I were you. Unless you wanna be an electric eel," said Carmen.
"Slick," said Neal as she walked off with Chase.
Xxxxx
Meanwhile Gray was seeing the recording crackle, "Peter, there's something wrong with my feed."
"Technical difficulties, mate. Please stand by. And don't touch those faders," said Player.
Gray unfortunately saw the curtain fall by itself and it clicked, "Wait, is this a recording? Why have I been lighting a pre-recorded performance? Peter?"
"Uh, there's a perfectly logical explanation. Just sit tight Graham," said Player. "Graham?" he asked.
"Player, it's me, he tried to make a run for it. I nerved him and knocked him out. He won't remember the pre-recording. I'll take over from here," said Bastion's voice.
"What do you mean he won't remember?" Player asked.
"I used a nerved technique; it erases anyone's memories of the past minute. Relax, he's fine. He won't remember being asked for the encore," said Bastion, who was now sitting at the controls. He'd had to do it, they couldn't risk Gray jeopardise the caper or him get his memories back.
Xxxxx
"Player, what's going on?" asked Carmen as she and Chase ran.
"Bastion had to knock Gray out and nerve him, he took away his memory of what just happened," said Player. Carmen groaned but…it was better this way. Chase heard all that and he just gave a small bark, it was no skin off his nose.
Meanwhile Bellum found Neal who shrugged and said, "Uh…Bob's your uncle?"
Bellum frowned, "And who would be my auntie?" she asked, setting him free.
"Carmen Sandiego," said Neal, "And she took off that way with her dog too," he said, running off with Bellum right behind him.
Meanwhile Entrapta had entered the building, her curiosity having gotten the better of her, "I wonder where Carmen is," she said, and she wandered around, just being Entrapta.
Xxxxx
"Red alert! We have intruders!" said Bellum.
Xxxxx
Carmen and Chase found something that looked important, and Carmen was about to get it when Entrapta showed up, holding her dat pad. "Fascinating! Oh, hi Carmen," she said.
Chase face-pawed, 'Typical Entrapta,' he thought.
"Sandiego!" came Bellum's voice.
Carmen and Chase looked at each other and they ran, Carmen grabbing Entrapta. "But it's for science!" she protested as they ran.
"Not now," said Carmen.
Neal slid onto the scene with Bellum, "If that's the game she wishes to play, raise the sphere," said Bellum. Neal did so and Tripwire was raised. "Carmen Sandiego will surrender," she said. "Or tonight will come to be known as the night the lights went out in Auckland."
Xxxxx
Carmen, Chase, and Entrapta were making their way out of the building when they ran into some guards. Chase growled. "Stay down," said Carmen to Entrapta.
The dream team of Chase and Carmen ended up taking down both guards with Entrapta watching.
Thought you could give old Nea the slip, eh?" asked Neal. Chase was growing and lunged forward as did Carmen. However, Neal was prepared this time and grabbed Carmen from behind, "Little known fact: this eel has quite the grip," he said. Chase was about to lunge at him when Neal held Carmen in front of him, causing Chase to stop.
"COWARD!" he barked, snarling at him.
The next thing anyone knew Neal was electrocuted. He collapsed onto the ground to reveal Entrapta who had picked up a fallen crackle rod. "What?" she asked Carmen who was looking at her.
"Nothing, I'm glad that you're here," said Carmen and gave her a hug. Chase reared up and hugged her too. They all ran off and Carmen contacted Bastion, "Bastion, bring the car, with Gray. Entrapta is with us, don't worry."
Xxxxx
"Got it Carmen," he said, hoisting the unconscious Gray over his shoulder and unlocking the door. Things were working out so far. "Uh oh," he said. "Uh, Car, we have a bigger problem, Bellum's brought up Tripwire!"
Xxxxx
"Carmen Sandiego," came Bellum's voice over the PA, "surrender or I will discharge an electromagnetic pulse from my very own sky tower, one that will disable every shred of technology in Auckland. Hospitals, emergency services, air traffic control will all be in disarray. Only you can avert this disaster by turning yourself in."
"That's Bellum, right?" asked Entrapta, Carmen nodded as did Chase. "Carmen, leave it to me, I solved Tripwire ages ago," she said. Carmen smiled and Chase wagged his tail.
They ran out onto the roof. Carmen used her grapple as did Chase and Entrapta used her rocket boots to get up the Sky Tower. "Entrapta, can you deactivate it?"
"I could do this in my sleep," she said, opening the hatch and looking into it. "Here we go," she said, yanking something out. "The machine should…" it stopped. "Yeah, it should do that," she smiled.
"Let's go," said Carmen, using her glider and activating Chase's, who glided next to her. Entrapta grinned and used her boots to get down. She landed next to her brother, who had put Gray in the car.
"Nice one," he said.
"Thanks," she replied.
Xxxxx
Bellum and Neal arrived a few seconds later, "Very well then. Lights out, Auckland," said Bellum as she pressed the button but without the piece Entrapta took from it, it exploded instead. "And Bob's your uncle," said Bellum.
Xxxxx
The next day Carmen, Chase, and Gray were at the coffee shop. Chase was keeping a sharp eye on Gray. He still didn't trust him.
"I'm really sorry that I passed out Carmen, I don't know why it happened," said Gray, looking at Carmen.
"It's ok, Bastion told me you didn't look too good, he reckons that it might, and I say might be a side effect of your missing memory," said Carmen, her hand on the table.
"That's not good. But it was a success, right?" he asked.
"Yes, it was, thanks a lot for your help Graham," she said.
"Not a problem," he said, smiling at her. Chase growled and popped his head in between their lines of sight.
"Chase?" Carmen asked, confused. Chase whined a bit and placed his paw on Carmen's hand and glared and growled at Gray as if daring him to do anything. "Not this jealousy thing again?" Carmen sighed.
"I'm not offended but maybe you should leave. Stay in my presence any longer and he might do something like toss me in the ocean," said Gray with a slightly nervous smile.
'Good idea,' thought Chase. He wanted to get away from Gray.
"He wouldn't do that," said Carmen and looked at Chase, she swore that she saw him actually contemplating it, "Then again," she said. "Here you go," she handed Gray a check. "It's what you earned and thanks for your help," she said.
'Yeah, yeah, let's go!" barked Chase, placing his leash in Carmen's hand and tugging on her sleeve.
"Crikey Carmen. I can't accept this. Carmen?" she was gone. 'You're a cheeky one," he said.
"Well, we stopped Bellum, Gray wasn't seen by V.I.L.E and Chase has issues with Gray," said Carmen to Player.
Chase barked and Player laughed, "Get used to it Red, he'll probably act the same way if you see Gray again. But you pulled it off. Good job."
"Thanks, Player, I also owe Entrapta too, without her, it wouldn't have been possible," said Carmen.
"You got that right!" barked Chase.
"I'd say Chase agrees with you. Talk to you later Red," said Player.
"Later," she said and looked at Chase who was back to his normal self now that they were away from Gray. She sighed but she smiled, it was nice to count on Chase for anything, even for guys.
Xxxxx
Meanwhile, A.C.M.E. had seen the interaction between Carmen and Gray and they were now watching him closely.
Xxxxx
I hoped you enjoyed it, let me know in a review.
