A/N: Because the new Upstead apartment is beautiful and because hailshalstead gives the cutest prompts – even if she doesn't know she's giving a prompt ;) here's your surprise story, Abby!

"It's really nice."

"It's huge."

Jay snorts a laugh and walks to the kitchen to run his hands along the countertops.

"Oh, shut up and grow up," Hailey rolled her eyes. She crossed her arms, "I'm dating a twelve-year-old."

"Technically, you're marrying a thirty-four year old," Jay smirked.

Hailey laughed and shook her head. She turned to walk toward the bathroom, "What do you think of it?"

"It's…something," Jay answered while beginning to look through the kitchen cabinets.

"Good or bad?" Hailey asked as she flipped the light on in the small room.

"Bad, very bad," Jay shook his head.

Hailey sighed and turned to look at herself in the mirror, "That's not funny." Picking her curling iron back up, she said, "This needs to be perfect."

"It's your hair," Jay finished buttoning up his shirt, "Why does it have to be perfect?"

"Because we're going to a family dinner, I want to look nice," Hailey said.

Jay smiled then walked over to her so he could grab his brush, "You've had dinner with Will before." He quickly ran the brush over his hair while looking in the mirror then tossed it in his drawer.

"But I've never gone to see your mom before," Hailey pointed out softly. She lowered the curling iron back to the counter and took a deep breath, "This is special for me, okay? I just want it to go well. I-I know what we're doing and maybe there isn't real pressure, but-"

"She would have loved you," Jay said simply. He shrugged and took her hands in his, "She would have loved your smile and would have baked you all the cookies in the world." Smiling, he paused for a second in thought then continued, "The last thing she asked of me was that I find some piece of happiness in this cruel world."

Hailey blushed, but still smiled and stepped closer to him.

"I found it in you," he whispered, "You're my happiness and because of that, I know with all my heart that she would have loved you."

"Thank you," Hailey said. She breathed in then pushed up on her tiptoes to properly wrap her arms around his shoulders in a tight hug.

"Anytime," Jay breathed before pressing his lips to her temple.

"Good, definitely good," Jay answered. He turned on the water and smiled at the clean water, "Remember when you were undercover in that apartment and it was disgusting?"

Hailey laughed, "That's every undercover assignment ever."

"True," Jay chuckled.

Stepping around the island, he leaned against it to take in the large empty living room. He breathed in and smiled as he asked, "Who's TV goes on the wall?"

Hailey stepped out of the bathroom, "Yours is bigger." Jay smirked and she just rolled her eyes, "You know what I meant."

"Yes, I did," Jay walked across the floor to grab her waist.

"Wasn't dirty at all," Hailey said.

"Eh," Jay cocked his head to the side, "Maybe a little bit."

Hailey slipped her arms around his neck, "It's all true."

Jay's smirk widened, "Oh, is it?"

"It's crooked," Hailey said.

"It is not," Jay stepped further back.

Hailey shook her head and stared at the top of the Christmas tree where the star was sitting, "You need to fix it. We're putting it in front of the window, people will see it."

"Okay," Jay walked over to her.

"What?" Hailey asked.

Jay shrugged then grabbed her waist to hoist her on his shoulders.

She laughed and steadied herself using his head to balance, "What're you doing?"

"Fix the star," Jay laughed with her, "If it needs to be fixed, might as well fix it yourself."

Hailey smiled and leaned forward to straighten out the star, "That's better."

"You sure?" Jay asked.

"Yup," Hailey placed her hands on the sides of Jay's neck.

He chuckled and helped her down to the ground in order to kiss her.

"Hello," Hailey breathed.

"Hi," Jay smirked against her lips, "Merry Christmas."

Hailey rested her arms over his shoulders, "Merry Christmas, Jay."

"It is," Hailey smiled. She pecked his lips before glancing over to the large window overlooking the water. Slipping from his arms, she walked up the few steps to tug the door open. The cool air washed over her and her smile instantly widened.

"The view is insane," Jay said softly. He followed her outside and placed his hands on the edge of the balcony, "I love the water."

Hailey nodded, "Do you think we'll ever get used to it?"

"I don't think so," Jay shook his head.

Hailey leaned next to him, "Why?"

He chuckled, "Can I be cheesy?"

"Oh god," Hailey laughed.

Jay smiled and quickly dropped a kiss on her head, "I never get tired of looking at you."

Hailey blushed and lightly knocked her shoulder into his side, "Cheesy, but cute."

"Like me?" Jay winked.

"Sure," Hailey smirked. She took a deep breath, "You didn't answer my question though. Think we'll get used to the view?"

"I hope not," Jay said softly, "I don't see how we could."

"You love the water, don't you?" Hailey asked.

Jay nodded, "Well, you do too."

"Course I do," Hailey leaned against the railing next to him, "Why do you like the water?"

"Oh, I don't know," Jay breathed out, "Maybe because I went so long without seeing it. It's just calming. Can you imagine it at sunset?"

"Golden hour," Hailey smiled, "I can't wait. We'll have to have a meal or two out here."

"I'm planning on it," Jay nodded.

"Yeah?" Hailey's face lit up, "You're thinking about having meals together here?"

Jay looked down at her smiling and placed his hand on hers, "I might be, are you thinking about it?"

"I think you're sick," Hailey said while brushing her hand over Jay's hair as they sat on the couch.

Jay cleared his throat, "No, this is just my new voice."

Hailey raised an eyebrow, "Puberty part two?"

Jay tried to laugh, "Exactly."

Hailey rolled her eyes, "Go lay in bed, okay? I'll cook up some soup."

"I'm fine, really," Jay said.

Hailey placed her hand on his forehead then sighed, "You feel warm. Come on, go lay down." She stood up only for Jay to grab her hand.

"You'll join me, won't you?" he asked.

Hailey smiled, "Of course."

"Fine," Jay coughed. He stood up and reluctantly walked into their bedroom to wait for Hailey to come lay with him.

"I really think this could be it," Hailey admitted.

Jay smiled and nodded, "It's the nicest we've seen so far."

"Way nicer than that place downtown," Hailey shook her head.

"God, that was a dump," Jay said, "Why'd we even look at it?"

"Because it was cheap and had more than two bedrooms," Hailey sighed. She pulled Jay back inside down the hall.

The first bedroom on the right had two big windows overlooking the water. Jay glanced around the room, "Wow."

"Could be an office," Hailey said.

"For all our at-home office work?" Jay smirked.

Hailey rolled her eyes then laughed, "We need a place to put our work stuff. You shouldn't keep anything from work in your room."

"Yeah?" Jay grabbed her waist, "Why's that?"

"It could cause stress in your life," Hailey said, "We don't need more stress."

"No, we do not," Jay chuckled, "But what do we need?"

"I guess…I need more books," Hailey said as she sat at the counter.

"Books?" Jay asked.

Hailey nodded, "That's what you can get me for my birthday."

Jay sighed and placed a cup of coffee in front of her, "I love that you read, I know it helps, but aren't books really personal? How am I supposed to know what you want?"

Hailey shrugged, "I could just give you a list."

"So I buy the books that you pick out?" Jay raised an eyebrow, "I don't know. Doesn't feel special enough."

"Please?" Hailey put her hand out.

Jay grabbed it, "You're sure you don't want jewelry?"

"Because I frequently wear jewelry," Hailey nodded.

Jay laughed softly, "Yeah, yeah, good point. Okay, I'll take a list of books."

"Thank you," Hailey smiled, "I really will appreciate them."

"I know," Jay squeezed her hand then stepped back to return to making their eggs. As they cooked, he switched the recipe on his phone screen to begin searching for plans on how to build a bookshelf.

"A home," Hailey said simply, "A place we can come relax at the end of the day."

"I like that," Jay pulled her closer, "Some place we can just be together."

Hailey nodded and reached up to press her lips to his.

Jay smiled against her as he wrapped his arms around her waist.

"I love you," Hailey whispered.

"I love you too," Jay replied.

Hailey stepped back, "So, room one is perfect."

"Well, the paint is kind of boring," Jay chuckled.

Hailey laughed, "I don't know if we could fix that."

"Well, posters will help and paintings," Jay said, "You have a lot of art in your place."

"I do," Hailey tangled her fingers with his then tugged him to the room across the hall, "Are you okay with me putting stuff up here?"

"Why wouldn't I be?" Jay asked.

"Because I'm busy!" Hailey laughed as she ran down the hall to their bedroom.

"You're busy?" Jay smirked and followed her, "Busy with what?"

Hailey jumped on the bed and hid her phone under the pillow, "Things."

"Oh, I need more information than that," Jay chuckled and got on top of her on the bed. He pinned her hands above her head, "What things are you doing?"

"Secret things," Hailey smiled, "So shh."

Jay laughed and bent down to kiss her, "Tell me."

Hailey tried tugging her hands out, "No."

"Not a good answer," Jay kissed down her jaw, "I want to know what you're up to."

"Maybe it's a surprise," Hailey breathed. Her eyes fluttered close and she pushed her hands up until Jay's fingers were intertwined with hers.

"Surprises are fun," Jay whispered. He squeezed her hands, "I guess I can forgive you then."

"Oh, were you mad at me?" Hailey asked with a hint of a smirk.

Jay hummed, "Never." He lightly nipped under her ear then breathed, "I love you, remember?"

"I remember," Hailey moaned.

"I don't know," Hailey walked over to the closet. Looking in it, she said, "I don't want to be controlling."

"Hey, you could never be controlling," Jay said, "I think we do that well, right? We work together."

Hailey smiled and turned to look at him, "And now we're living together."

"We are," Jay smiled back, "It's…everything I've wanted."

"And what do you think you want to do in this room?" Hailey asked.

Jay walked around it for a moment then took a deep breath, "Well, the other one's an office, right? So I guess the logical explanation is guest room, but that's sort of boring."

Hailey nodded, "Super boring. Who exactly would we have as a guest?"

"My mom would have been sixty-eight today," Jay said softly.

Hailey nodded and sat next to him on the balcony. He'd walked out after dinner to sit by himself and stare out at the water despite the cold.

"Feels weird every year," Jay rubbed his nose.

"I bet," Hailey whispered.

Jay shook his head, "I can't believe it."

Hailey sat up on her knees to rub her hand over his back. Jay leaned into her and took a deep breath. They sat in silence long after Hailey felt like she was shaking from the frigid air, but she didn't say anything. Jay needed to be outside and she was completely okay with that.

Eventually, though, he did straighten up and stand. Reaching down to help Hailey up, he asked, "Movie night in bed?"

Hailey smiled and nodded, "I'd love that."

"Thoughts on watching The Princess Bride?" Jay walked Hailey inside.

She laughed, "Really?"

"It was her favorite movie," Jay smiled. He knelt next to their entertainment center to dig out the DVD.

"Well then," Hailey plopped down on the couch, "As you wish."

Jay let out a long breath, "I have no idea. I mean I guess if someone's power goes out? Would that even be something they'd want though?"

Hailey shrugged, "I don't know. Makayla?"

"Makayla," Jay slowly nodded, "Or…like Makayla…other kids."

"Other kids?" Hailey held back a smile, "And how would we end up having other kids stay with us?"

"Maybe…for a case," Jay suggested and stepped closer to Hailey to grab her hand, "Or because they're related to us."

Hailey let the smile spread across her face, "I see, because you have nieces and nephews."

"Well, you know," Jay laughed.

"Explain it to me," Hailey squeezed his fingers.

"They could be fully related to us," Jay said softly, "Like our kids."

Hailey bit her lip, but her eyes were still lit up, "And make this a nursery?"

Jay nodded, "Would that be okay?"

"It'd be more than okay," Hailey stepped closer to him.

"What about having a dog in here until we put a crib in it?" Jay asked.

Hailey laughed, "We might need to talk more about that one."

Jay laughed with her, "Kids are a no-brainer, but dog requires the brakes."

Hailey smiled and shrugged, "Just need to pause that conversation. I mean, could we even have a dog here?"

"I thought we could host Thanksgiving this year," Jay said.

Hailey looked down at the large frozen turkey he'd just placed on their counter, "Really?"

"Yeah," Jay nodded, "We could invite Will and Kevin and Kim and Adam. Adam was just telling me how Makayla's more comfortable with all of us than his family, this could be good for her."

Hailey smiled and sat at a barstool, "I like that. Should I make a pie?"

"Do you make pies?" Jay asked.

Hailey reached over to shove his arm, "I can make a pie."

Jay shrugged and chuckled, "Okay."

Hailey laughed shaking her head, "Fine, I'm not the best, but I can make Greek food. Is that weird?"

"No, not at all, definitely what the pilgrims ate on the first Thanksgiving," Jay teased.

Hailey waved her hand, "Was the first Thanksgiving really a great thing anyways? We can change traditions."

"Then I say go for it," Jay leaned across the counter to brush her hair out of her face, "We can have turkey and loukoumades."

"Look at you," Hailey smiled, "There you go."

"I listen," Jay chuckled, "Katalavaíno."

Hailey's eyes widened, "What?"

"Katalavaíno," Jay repeated, "It means 'I understand,' right?"

Hailey got off the bar stool and walked over to wrap her arms around him and kiss him.

Jay smiled against her lips, "Do you like that I can speak Greek?"

"Naí," Hailey breathed.

Jay pulled back, "What?"

"Naí," Hailey repeated, "It means 'yes.'"

"Right," Jay blushed, "Sorry, it just-"

Hailey shook her head and kissed him again, "You're learning."

Jay slipped his hands along her hips and whispered, "Want to teach me even more?"

"Naí," Hailey replied.

Jay smirked and lifted her up to carry her to their room.

"No clue, so good point," Jay moved his hand to her back, "Our room next?"

"Whose bed should we keep?" Hailey asked as they walked to the last and biggest room with the skylight.

"Good question," Jay chuckled and looked around, "I mean, we both have a queen, so that won't matter. When'd you buy your mattress?"

"I actually bought a new one pretty recently," Hailey answered.

"Before me?" Jay asked.

Hailey rolled her eyes, "Yes, before you. Literally. I think I bought it a few weeks before I joined Intelligence."

"I wouldn't call that super recent," Jay chuckled. He walked over to look up at the skylight, "This is pretty cool."

"When'd you get yours?" Hailey asked.

Jay snorted softly, "Before that."

"How old?" Hailey smiled.

"Like…it was what I bought with my last bonus check from overtime on patrol before I was promoted," Jay said.

"Uh-huh," Hailey laughed, "Now that's old. I was probably still in high school."

"Hey!" Jay laughed harder, "I am not that much older than you."

Hailey smiled and ignored the comment as she peeked in the attached bathroom.

Jay stood behind her to wrap his arms around her waist, "That's a pretty big shower."

"Are you sure?" Hailey asked as she zipped her jeans up.

"Obviously," Jay pulled his shirt on.

"Well," Hailey huffed and crossed her arms, "Jay, it's a big deal."

"It's driving to work together," Jay said, "We've been living here for a week now and everyone knows it. We can drive in together."

"I just…Jay," Hailey bit her lip.

He shook his head, "No one's going to judge." He walked over to her and gently squeezed her arms, "I promise you."

"Jay," Hailey said again.

"If Voight dares to say anything about this, about us, I will personally knock him out," Jay shrugged.

Hailey cracked a smile, but still rolled her eyes, "You would never."

"You come first, Hailey, always," Jay kissed her forehead.

"Thank you," she said softly.

He winked and stepped back, "Drive to work now?"

"Well, coffee first," Hailey said.

"Obviously," Jay repeated with a smirk.

"Yeah," Hailey breathed. She put her hands over his, "Are you imagining it?"

Jay laughed softly and kissed the top of her head, "Yes."

"It is a nice showerhead," Hailey pointed out.

Jay bit back a smile, "Probably has good water pressure too."

"Don't forget the water temp," Hailey said, "I bet it's always hot when we need it."

"Perfect for those Chicago winters," Jay brushed Hailey's hair off her neck then kissed behind her ear.

"Can't wait," Hailey breathed.

"I'm waiting, Hailey Anne, let's go," Jay called out as he tightened his watch.

She hurried down the hall with her high heels in hand, "Sorry, sorry."

Jay whistled, "Why don't you go undercover more often?"

Hailey smiled and used the couch for balance as she slipped her shoes on, "You like this?"

"My fiancé in a tight dress? Hell yes I like this," Jay said.

"I'll keep that in mind," Hailey said. She turned for him, "What're we thinking? Do I look rich?"

"Like a million bucks," Jay put his hand out, "Let's go catch some bad guys, Gabriella Hart."

Hailey's smile widened and she grabbed his hand, "Let's do this, Zachary Hart."

Jay laughed and walked her out of the apartment.

"We'll have to continue this some other time," Jay breathed then straightened up.

Hailey sighed and nodded, "Yeah."

Jay squeezed her hips before turning to walk back out to the living room.

Hailey followed him and sent one last glance toward the balcony.

"Final thoughts?" Jay asked.

Smiling, Hailey nodded, "It's a really nice place. Best one we've seen so far."

"That's for sure," Jay leaned against the counter.

"What do you think?" Hailey asked, "What's your favorite part?"

"View for sure," Jay nodded toward the balcony, "But, like we've said, having three bedrooms is great and this is a really nice kitchen. I like how updated it is."

Hailey nodded, "The bathrooms too."

"For sure," Jay said. They stared at each other for a moment before he breathed in and said, "So…positive this is the place?"

"Positive," Hailey breathed.

Her hand shakily came up to her mouth as she stared at the pregnancy test on the bathroom counter. Her other hand drifted down to her stomach to nudge Jay's t-shirt up and cradled her belly as if the baby inside her was already grown.

She felt her eyes tear up and shook her head at the rush of emotions that flooded her.

Jay knocked on the door, "Hailey? You good? You've been in there a while."

She wiped her face then gripped the test in her hand as she walked over to open the door.

Jay stepped back and raised an eyebrow, "Are you sick?"

Hailey shook her head and held out the pregnancy test.

Jay froze, "Hailey."

"Look at it," she whispered.

Jay couldn't take his eyes from hers as she shakily grabbed the test from her. He then took a deep breath before looking down at the test. It was only in his hands for a moment, though, because the second he noticed the result, he dropped it and picked Hailey up to spin her around.

She laughed through her tears, "We're having a baby."

"We're having a baby," Jay repeated. He put her back on the ground and quickly slipped his hands under her shirt to brush his fingers along her stomach, "Oh my god."

"I know," Hailey sniffled. She put her hand on the side of his neck, "We did it."

"We did," Jay smiled. He dropped to his knees and lifted her shirt to press a soft kiss to her stomach, "Hi, baby."

Hailey wiped her face then carded her fingers through his hair, "We're going to be parents."

Jay kissed her stomach again, "We are. To the most perfect baby."

Hailey laughed softly, "The most loved baby."

Jay smiled and brushed his thumb along her waistband, "Exactly."

"Positive," Hailey nodded.

Jay smiled, "We're on the same page then."

Hailey's own smile widened, "So, do we go talk to the landlord then?"

"Seems like the next logical step," Jay chuckled. He put his hand out, "Walk with me?"

Hailey hurried over and grabbed his hand, "Of course."

Jay kissed the side of her head before leading her out of the apartment and into their future together.
