Bucky woke up abruptly feeling his pocket vibrating, realizing it was his phone he reached into his pocket pulling it out. He flipped the phone open answering it.
"Yeah?" he asked shortly.
"It's me" a familiar voice responded.
Wiping the sleep from his eyes Bucky straightened his back against the couch.
"No shit, what do you want Sam?" Bucky asked with a tone of annoyance.
"Just checking in on you" Sam retorted back.
Bucky didn't believe him; they weren't close like that.
"Well let's see, I'm 106 years old, bornin 1917, I have one vibranium arm, I've been brainwashed multiple times, living in a completely different time. Everyone I knew is dead, their children's children are old, so, I'm doing great actually." He replied in a cheerful tone.
"Alright, no need for the dramatics" Sam shot back.
Bucky rolled his eyes turning his head to the window, it was still dark outside, with a light glow, it must be early in the morning he thought.
"What's the problem Sam?" He asked.
The line was silent for a while before Sam spoke.
"They are naming a new Captain… I gave back the shield" Sam spoke slowly.
Bucky felt his phone crush in his left hand easily at the news.
Ro made her way early to her office, usually this early in the morning no one was up, but when she made her way up the concrete steps of her office building, she noticed a line of cars parked out front.
"What the hell is going on here?" She asked herself.
Reaching the glass doors Ro grabbed her security badge, a familiar face opened the door for. Frank the front door security guard curtly nodded at her. She flashed her badge smiling at him.
"Hello, busy morning, isn't it?" She joked to him.
Frank gave he puzzled look, like she was the one out of the loop.
"You didn't hear the news Ma'am?" He asked.
When she didn't answer him, he continued.
"They are announcing the new Captain America today" Frank advised her.
She couldn't hide the surprise on her face. She nodded her head at him and continued her way to the elevator. 'why would they announce a new captain America" she wondered to herself. Pushing the elevator button, she waited for the doors to open. Once she heard the doors ding, she entered the empty space. The doors closed and she pressed the for the 35th floor level, to her office. She needed to review some important reports detailing some activity in Europe from the Department of Defense. Along with her own case filing for her an attorney for DOJ. It would be another busy day, but it would keep her mind busy as well which wasn't a bad thing for her.
The elevator doors opened, signaling she had reached her floor. She briskly started he walk to her office at the end of the hallway. She looked down at her phone, it was now 5 o'clock, these offices would be quiet for 2 more hours. Without looking up she knew she was getting close to her office, but she felt like she wasn't alone. She looked up and was stopped in her tracks, seeing a familiar figure leaning against her office door.
"What the hell are you doing here?" she asked.
She couldn't hide the frustration in her voice. It was taking everything in her will power to not turn back around and leave. She was in no mood to deal with this right now. This was not she imagined she'd start her morning. To see the man who had hurt her like no one else had ever done, and now she would never let to again.
Bucky was sitting on a bench in central park, Sam was sitting next to him.
"So, did they just take the shield or did you willingly give it away" Bucky asked Sam again.
He could see the tension in Sam's jaw, the frustration.
"For the 5th and last time, yes they took it back" Sam answered back at him.
Bucky offers a bottle of vodka in a brown paper bag, sure it was only like 5 am but he didn't care, this was a time to drink. He couldn't get drunk anyways. Sam eyed the bag before finally accepting it, taking a long swig from it.
"That's some bullshit" Bucky affirmed.
Sam grunts in agreement and passes the bottle back. Bucky grabs it willingly and takes a long drink from it.
"They are going to announce it soon" Sam states.
An elderly woman walks by them making no intention to hide her disgust at the two men drinking this early in public. Bucky grins at her taking another drink to really piss her off. It worked, 'keep walking I'm older than you' he thinks to himself. She scowled harder at him before walking past them, he could smell her ungodly awful perfume.
Sam checks his watch for what seems like the 10th time in the past 20 minutes. Bucky hands him back the bottle.
"I suspect they'll announce it in the next hour or so, have to get it out early so everyone knows" Sam advises drinking from the bottle.
"Oh boy I am so excited" Bucky responds.
Ro couldn't believe what was happening to her right now. Her ex was in her office, she hadn't seen or talked to him since she had thrown her engagement ring at him that night, she caught him fucking his boss in their bed. She had left everything she owned and moved far away after that night.
"What do you want?" Ro asks him.
She watched him take a seat on her office couch, it annoys her to no end. He looks around her office taking everything in and his time in answering her.
"You've done really well for yourself Ro" He tells her.
She sets her belongings on her desk.
"Yes, well one can achieve a lot when they don't have any distractions" Ro remarks harshly.
Making it known clearly how she feels about him being here. At the tone of her harshness, he looks directly at her.
"What do you want?" Ro asks him again.
He holds her eye contact for a moment.
"Ro please, come sit with me and I will tell you" He said as he patted next to him.
Rolling her eyes, she sits down behind her desk. He sighs, before getting up and walking over to her desk, he turns her chair towards him and sits on the edge of her desk. He's sitting to close to her for her liking.
"Alright, I am back in New York Ro, I am going to be assigned over here, I have a new job role. I was hoping we could reconnect, professionally of course" He tells her.
That statement is not what she was wanting to hear, what could his new role be here in New York? Why would he want to reconnect?
"I don't understand, why would you move back from DC? How could I help you professionally? We don't work in the same areas and why the fuck would I want to?" She fires back at him.
He was about to respond before being cut off.
"How dare you, you think you can just show up here to my office after everything you've done. You arrogant piece of" before Ro can finish, she is now the one being interrupted.
"Ro…I know what I did was horrible, it was a terrible and shitty thing to do. I'm not here to dig that up. I'm not solely here about the past, I don't want you to be upset with me even more. I will make a better effort to atone for everything I did to you…but right now I am here professionally." He stated with a sincere tone, he pauses letting her take in everything he was saying waiting if she was going to get angry again.
"I know you are doing great work for the DOD, being a top attorney for them, I know you also work closely still on intel assignments for them. I think with everything you have you can be very helpful to me, to my new role." He tells her,
After all that talking, he really hasn't told her exactly what he's doing here and his new role.
"What new role John?" Ro asks again.
John smiles down at her, loving her using his name. He looks down at his watch.
"Look I have to go, but if you come downstairs out front, you'll see what it exactly is. I'm glad I have you to help me, it means a lot Ro." He states before standing up walking towards the door.
"I never said I would help you" Ro argues back at him watching John leave.
"I know you Ro, I know you are curious. You can't fool me. If you don't want to know what I'm doing or how you could help me don't come downstairs. Simple as that" John calls out over his shoulder walking down the hallway.
Ro watches him walk away wearing his army uniform walking to the elevator.
"Fuck you" she calls out to his almost gone form.
She was curious, who wouldn't be? He was a soldier what could his new role be? Fuck she thought, he was right she was going to follow him to find out. She quickly grabbed her belonging and made her way back to the elevators. Pushing the button, the doors opened immediately with a smiling John leaning against the wall.
"See I told you" John said with a smile.
Rolling her eyes, she steps into the elevator, John stands next to her, closely.
"You look great by the way," John tells her.
"Shut up" Ro replies.
