Hi everyone, it's been a while like usual. As always, I come back with a new chapter. Sadly, it seems like we won't get anymore official HTTYD content. At least, we got fanfictions and the Fandom who are both still very well alive.
This chapter is one I was waiting so long to write and I'm quite happy with the result and I hope it will be the same for you.
Now, let's get to it.
Hiccup's POV
As we fly once more above the battlefield, lightning rips the sky in two, followed by a loud thunder.
Brrrrrrrrrrrrrr
This isn't good for the dragons. In order to avoid being hit, they have to fly closer to the sea level where the water attracts the lightning more than they do. Seriously, what does Thor have against metal and water? I look briefly north toward where I know Toothless is fighting the wild colony. Because of the weather, they are too far to see anything. 'I hope you're all right buddy' I think before focusing on our battle once again. As planned, without Rakkar or Fenroc, the chain of command is broken. The hunters' fleet doesn't maneuver as well as she used too. Instead of acting as one unit, the ships close enough to each other assembled in groups. This means the two other hunters chiefs aren't here otherwise they would have kept the fleet together. I assume they are on the ships who directly attacked Berk. I want to go after them, but we can't leave during the most critical moment of this battle. Gradually, our forces progress and push back the enemy. We may have the advantage now, but nothing is over while the battle is still going on. Even if I can't fight because of my missing prosthetic leg and the loss of Inferno, I still can coordinate the actions of the dragons and the Berserker while Dagur and Heather lead their people.
Brrrrrrrrrrrrrr
Stormfly comes face to face with a hunter warship. She dodges several projectiles and destroy a catapult before flying away. I notice several corpses floating into the ocean including dragons and Berserkers. Stormfly flies between two Berserkers' ships and land on the deck.
"She just needs a moment to catch her breath and recharge her fire," Astrid explains as we get off the dragon's back.
I nod. Looking around, I see the soldiers in activity including wounded ones. I don't know how long everyone can keep this up, but we can't lessen our efforts now. Among them are Fishlegs and Meatlug with Ruffnut. Fishlegs is lying on the ground. I quickly dismount Stormfly and Astrid help me walk toward them.
"Guys, are you okay," I ask them worried.
"Yeah don't worry Hiccup," Ruffnut answers. "They already saw a healer who banned them from the rest of the battle but they'll be fine. You should have seen him, how he attacked a hunter ship to protect me and countless others."
"If I don't make it," Fishlegs says with a childish voice, "at least my sacrifice would have helped people. Remember us for that Odin, until the time of end. For only the worthiest of heart, deserve to be of something part."
"Aw I love it when you do your big heart poetic thing. That's it. The score is 10 to 3. I chose you," Ruffnut says before hugging him strongly.
Fishlegs looks surprised at first. His cheeks are a deep red. He looks at me sheepishly yet is clearly the happiest man on Midgard right now.
Astrid looks at me not understanding everything. I just shrug and signal her to leave them alone. Sleuther then lands in front of us with Dagur on his back.
"Hey brother, it's working. We managed to destroy the smaller groups like you told us too and surrounded the remaining big ones using the cover-and-strike tactic I love so much. It cost us a bit more than we thought, but the hunters are now almost at our mercy."
"That is great news Dagur," Astrid says. "Isn't Hiccup?"
"Yes. Let's tell everyone to continue like this and..."
Hiccup is interrupted when Cloudjumper lands hastily on their left. He doesn't have the time to say anything that Valka speaks with a panicked voice.
"Hiccup, things are critical on Berk. And Gobber, he's…The riders must come quickly."
Toothless's POV
Brrrrrrrrrrrrrr
Oh no. Not lightning. As soon as the first ones stroke, dragons from both side started to dive down toward the ocean. Yet, I still encourage every dragon to do so and fly low. The danger lightning represents is well known. Which is why, alongside the fact they are scary (don't repeat this to anyone), I hate them. This is the best way to avoid being hit is to fly low enough. One lightning can even kill several dragons in one hit and every dragons know this. Satisfied to see them all fly to safety, I'm about to dive myself when the Skrill charge at me and catch my tail in her mouth. I roar in pain as she throws me away. I stabilise myself, and growls.
"You're crazy. We can't fight up here in the middle of a lightning storm."
"Speak for yourself," she responds.
She opens wide her wings and several streaks of lightning hit her. Instead of injuring her, they seem to recharge her energy and firepower.
"Oh right," I say remembering this detail about Skrills. "I'm screwed."
"For once we agree," she retorts before firing a huge lightning streak out of her mouth.
Using all the strength in my wings, I propel myself to the right and manage dodge the attack. I fire a plasma blast at her that she destroys with another lightning streak. Normally, when a plasma blast encounter lightning from a Skrill, it explodes. But in this case, her attack is more powerful and simply cut through my fire. I quickly dive down to dodge the lightning streak as well as a third one when I pass under her. During all this time, she continues to charge up herself. Once on the other side, I fire two more plasma blasts, putting as much power in them as I can, creating an acute whistling. She counters it with her lightning again. This time, however, they do explode pushing us both away. Charging up herself once again, the Skrill launches herself at me, using the lightning to increase her speed. Taken by surprise, I try to avoid her and fail. She rams into me head on. The impact his so strong I can't do anything as she pushes me farther and farther directly toward the sea. She then violently throws me against the top of a sea stack. As I saw the rocky floor coming fast, I manage at the last moment to move my body so that when I land, I roll instead of crushing myself like Hiccup and I always do. Despite this, the landing still is hurtful. In a desperate attempt, I dig my claws into the ground which hurt too. Finally, I come to a stop just when I'm about to fall over the sea stack.
Brrrrrrrrrrrrrr
I hang over the void, the only thing keeping me from falling being my claws clinging to the edge. I have a few bruises, but nothing too bad. Under me stand a group of sharp and tall vertical rocks that could impale me if I ever fell on it. I climb back on the sea stack, a bit winded. I can feel some lightning flowing through my body provoking a disagreeable sensation. The Skrill suddenly ram into me a second time, sending me crashing against a large rock. She fires a lightning stream at the rock, breaking it in two. The broken part falls on me, making me growl in pain. The Skrill walks in front of me, a disgusted expression on her face when she looks at my tail.
"Pathetic. How can you expect to lead and protect our kind when you can't even fly on your own? It's over," she tells me.
I growl back refusing to give up and charge a plasma blast as fast as I can, but the Skrill see it and close my mouth with her paw. I try to free my head, but with my body blocked under the rocks I can't.
Two dragons then crash on the other side of the sea stack, attracting our attention. The first one if Falla and the other a Triple Stryke who must be from the Skrill's colony since Falla is fighting him. They both notice us and briefly seem surprised. Taking advantage of the situation, I free my head and bite her paw, feeling the bones crack under the pressure, making her roar in pain. Using a plasma blast, I destroy the rocks on me and stand up.
Brrrrrrrrrrrrrr
"Falla watch out," I scream, but it's too late.
The Triple Stryke jumps on her while she was watching me. He pins her on the ground and stands on her back, blocking her with his body. She struggles violently without success. I want to help her, but can't because of the Skrill. She charges up herself again, attracting several lightning at the same time. The light blinds me a little, which is enough for her to pin me on the ground too with her claws digging under my scales. Jolts of lightning painfully flow from her body to mine. I want to react, but my body refuses to answer as if it was paralysed.
"Don't! Please," Falla tells the Skrill."Can't you see by doing all this you are condemning dragons."
"On the contrary, I'm saving us."
She opens her mouth. All I see is a blue flash before her lightning hit me head on. Suddenly, my whole body feels like it's on fire. I can't feel or hear anything beside this pain. And it doesn't stop. It goes on and on. For how long, impossible to tell. I'm about to lose consciousness when I hear Falla's voice calling my name I can't lose now. If I do, then Hiccup, Falla, the dragons, Berk, our allies, everyone will suffer. I try my best to resist. My vision quickly darkens. Then, everything becomes white.
Falla's POV
Brrrrrrrrrrrrrr
"Toothless," I scream as I watch the Skrill electrocute him.
I try once again to free myself so I can go save him. In our position, I can't hit him with my fire, so I can only rely on my strength to push the Triple Strike off me. I then move my wings wildly to try to destabilise him. Nothing works. His grip on me is too strong.
Toothless's body suddenly goes limp. No. I already lost Owen. I couldn't save him. I can't let the same thing happen to Toothless. 'Please great skies protect him,' I pray as I continue to try and free myself.
The Skrill stops her attack, panting, having seemingly used up all her lightning. Everything freeze around me as I look at Toothless inert body. With a vicious smile, the vicious queen opens her mouth again, ready to deliver the killing blow with her fangs.
"NOOO," I scream with desperation filling my voice.
I finally manage to push the Triple Strike off me and with the highest speed I can reach run toward Toothless. I fire a plasma blast at the Skrill pushing her off him. Before her or the Triple Strike can attack him again, I take him in my paw and jump off the sea stack. We quickly fall toward the ocean, so I open my wings to lean right. The movement, however, wasn't well coordinated. Because of this, we land a bit harshly on a platform at the bottom of another smaller sea stack not far from the first one, just above the sea level.
I shake myself and immediately check on Toothless who is lying on his back under me, praying he's still alive. At first, it looks like his body is limp until he starts coughing. I sigh, more relieved than I ever was in my life, and briefly nuzzle him. There is something strange about his scales though. They seem a bit…I don't know. Softer? Like old scales when they're about to fall off. Stepping back, I look at him and gasp. The scales on his head, neck and torso, a third of them are now white instead of black. Same for those on his wings. Toothless rolls on his belly and the phenomenon is also visible on his back. White scales on a Night Fury? This isn't normal.
Brrrrrrrrrrrrrr
"Toothless, are you alright?"
"I'm…not sure. A bit weird. At least it doesn't hurt anymore ," he responds slowly standing up.
While doing so, he looks at himself and yells in surprise.
"What the…What happened to my scales?"
He touches one of his white scales with his claw it provokes a small surge of lightning. I don't have the time say anything because we see the Skrill and the Triple Stryke fly toward us and stop mid-air.
"It's impossible. How can you still be alive after all the lightning I threw at you," the Skrill roars.
"Don't let him get to you my queen," the Triple Stryke tells the Skrill. "He's obviously not unscathed. Since he's alive the challenge isn't over. You can still become the Alpha."
I growl, knowing he is right. I saw this Triple Stryke take out several of Berk's dragons before the storm forced the battle to move elsewhere. Instead of continuing, most dragons stopped fighting being more afraid of being hit by lightning if they move too much then their enemy. Unsurprisingly, this Triple Stryke wasn't one of them, so I attacked him hoping I could kill him quickly. Things didn't go like I planned and we ended up on the sea stack.
"Like I'll let that happen," Toothless growls. "Falla, can you take care of the Triple Stryke?"
I look at him, not sure if he's in condition to continue fighting. His injuries aren't too bad, but I'm worried about those white scales. He looks at me briefly and do one if his toothless smile that are cuter than what I want to admit. I can see in his eyes he's determined. I smile back and nod, knowing full well there is no stopping him. This whole exchange barely lasted one second. Looking back at our opponent, the Skrill is finishing charging herself for another round. Toothless takes off with more strength and speed than I anticipated, which is a good sign, and she quickly follows him. On my side, I focus on the Triple Strike, having my own battle to finish. I take off, flying directly toward him.
"Why are you helping him," he roars. "I thought you wanted to avenge your human."
This makes me stop. I would never forget Owen, but in the heat of the battle I didn't think about the fact his murderer is finally within my reach. I can't help but briefly look in the direction of Berk. A part of me feels terrible, wishing to be back there searching for the hunter named Fenroc. During a second, I consider going back. Yet, I can't just abandon Toothless here. I made the choice to help him for this battle and I won't make the same mistake again. 'I'm sorry Owen. Maybe someone else will do it for us,' I think before looking back at the Triple Strike.
"Don't you even dare talk about him," I roar.
Brrrrrrrrrrrrrr
I fire a plasma blast directly at his face. He counters it with his own fire giving me the opportunity to tackle him. I slash at his face with my claws. I can't stay close to him too long or he'll sting me. He pushes me away with his paw and tries to sting me with one of his tails. I manage to catch the tail in my mouth and bit hard which makes him roar in pain. He tries to bite my head off, forcing me to let go of his tail. I then hear a weird sound as his three tails combine into one and smacks me directly in the face. The impact is powerful enough to send me away. The Triple Strike flies after me and catches me with his pincers. He tries once again to sting me thankfully I manage to dodge them. I scratch his belly with my claws several times until he lets me go. I hear the weird sound again as his three tails combine once again. In a swift movement, he turns on himself his tail hit my belly and throwing me a bit away. I then notice we flew closer to a sea stack giving me an idea. With a strong movement from my wings, I propel myself at the Triple Strike and push him with my paw until his back hit the sea stack. I fly backward to avoid a counterattack. Something then grabs my tail before I can get away and pulls me down until my back hit the sea stack. The Triple Strike hovers above me. He makes that weird sound again and I remember what it means. Quickly, I move away to avoid his tail who hit the rocky wall. The Triple Strike tries to remove it, but his tails seem to be stuck in the rock. Too bad for him. I fly behind him and gather all the gas I have left in my mouth creating an acute whistling. Two fireballs leave my mouth directly hitting the Triple Strike in a loud explosion. It creates a big cloud of dust and a landslide that engulfs the dragon as it falls into the ocean. I hover above for a moment, waiting to see if he comes up. He doesn't.
I allow myself a moment to catch my breath. Fighting against the wild colony then this Triple Strike was harder than I thought. Is it normal I feel no remorse for killing another dragon? Maybe now I can go look for Owen's murderer once I'm sure Toothless is safe. Looking around in search of our dear Alpha, I then hear the loudest and most powerful roar I ever heard. Suddenly, dragons from both sides flies toward its origin. Not sure what is happening and somewhat worried, I follow them.
Toothless POV's
A strange feeling makes its way inside my body as I take off. I don't know what happened to me, but, somehow, I believe it saved me. The Skrill was right, her last attack should have killed me. I didn't suffer any negative effects beside some of my scales turning white. I hardly have the time to dwell on it, however. The Skrill is following me angrier than before if that's even possible.
Brrrrrrrrrrrrrr
The Skrill charges up herself again. I growl. As long as she continues to do this, my chances of winning are slim, and I can fly away from her. That would be seen as a sign of surrender. She fires a stream of lightning in my direction. Thanks to the distance between us, I dodge it easily. I immediately dive toward my opponent, not wanting to fly to high and get hit by a lightning coming from the sky. I instinctively charge a plasma blast. Surprisingly I haven't used up all my fire yet, or maybe it is partially recharged. Either way, she barely dodges it before firing another stream who hit me directly in the chest.
The course of the moon follows the stars
The shock sends me backward with my life flashing in front of my eyes. For a moment, I feel like it is the end. Except it is not. I stabilise myself and hover mid-air. To my utter surprise, I don't feel any pain at all. Instead of burning me, the lightning seems to be absorbed by my scales. As I look at my paws, I see new scales are losing their black color, gradually becoming white.
At her peak, the night might become a day
"What? Again?"
"It's impossible? How are you doing this," the Skrill ask shocked.
I'm not sure, but right now it's certainly my best chance to win. Let's hope it will last long enough and won't kill me afterward. I quickly charge a small plasma blast to do a diversion shot. When I do, lightning comes out of my body and move along my scales to merge with my fire while it's in my throat. It's like Terrible Terrors are walking inside it, their little paws tickling in a really uncomfortable way.
The Skrill suddenly roar like a mad dragon and launch herself at me teeth out, so I fire my plasma blast anyway just when she is getting close. She dodges it, but I'm already charging a second plasma blast and once again it merges with lightning. I fire directly at her flank where it hit. Instead of provoking the usual explosion, it creates a strong electric discharge just like when my fire comes into contact with lightning. The Skrill falls from the sky and land on a sea stack. I keep hovering eyes wide, shocked.
Brrrrrrrrrrrrrr
The Skrill stands up only slightly injured. This battle is taking too long. There are still Hunters to defeat. What if Hiccup needs my help?
"Too bad, seems like you've used all my lightning," the Skrill roars.
She's probably right, but I still refuse to give up. Concentrating, I charge a stronger plasma blast. Sadly, no lightning comes out of my scales. Yet, I feel something new inside me. Deciding to go along with it, I concentrate harder. The feeling quickly turns into a tickly sensation climbing up my body to join once again my fire in my throat.
"Then I guess I'll use my own," I retort before firing.
The Skrill, taken by surprise, quickly take off just before being hit. Seeing the strength of the explosion destabilised her flight, I dive down at high speed and hit her hard, sending her back on the sea stack. She is about to use her lightning until she remembers it doesn't affect me anymore. Taking advantage of this, I jump on her and bite her head. She pushes me back and tries to bite my neck. I quickly throw her back with a small uncharged up plasma blast. That's right. She can't use her fire, but I can. She stands up, her left wing injured and roar loudly. She is not giving up yet. I roar louder, trying one last time to impose my domination on her. She refuses to submit and gives me a hateful look. This battle can't go on like this. Now is my chance to put an end to this rebellion. I'm the Alpha and I'll protect my kind no matter what, including our humans. No hesitation. I fly up, my back spines shining blue once again, dig in the deepest parts of this power like during my battle against the Bewilderbeast and after my first battle against the Skrill and use it to let out one of the most powerful roars of my life.
Soon, dragons from both sides gather around us, answering my call. A few moments later, we are surrounded by all the dragons that followed me here and the wild colony. I spot Falla among them and can't help but smile seeing her alive. The Skrill take off, but she clearly has some difficulty to fly.
When it happens, a new storm will light the sky
I charge a final plasma blast, putting all I have in it including my new lightning abilitywho is bursting out of me, like fire burst out from Monstrous Nightmares bodies, accompagnied by the ever present accute whistling.
Brrrrrrrrrrrrrr
My whole body is covered by lightning. The Skrill also charges herself up using sky lightning. We stare at each other during a brief moment when suddenly she moves toward me with such speed she could disappear in a blink. Sadly for her, I knew she was going to do that, her claws and fangs beside her last weapons against me. I move slightly to the right with as much speed as I can, barely missing her but it is enough for me. I release my fire at the same time, hitting her from behind creating a huge electric explosion. It is so powerful it sends me crashing again. When I open my eyes, I'm lying on a sea stack with Falla standing next to me.
"Hey, you're alright," she asks me.
"Yeah," I respond standing up tired, a bit shaken and my belly hurt but nothing too bad. "The Skrill?"
"She's gone," Falla answers helping me. "Your last attack sent her drowning in the ocean if she was still alive at that point."
Dragons around us are roaring and flying around in joy. I nod, glad this whole nightmare is finally over. Except it isn't. I notice not all dragons are sheering. Those belonging to the wild colony are astonished, some even look at me with fear in their eyes. One by one, they fly away as fast as they can, hoping to get away from this battle alive. Some of my dragons decide to go after them, but I stop them.
"No," I try to roar but instead cough. I take a breath and try again. "NO! Let them leave. We have things more urgent to take care of."
"About that," Falla begins, "can you tell me WHAT IN THE SKIES WAS THAT. I thought being children of lightning and death itself was just a metaphor. And your scales, IT BECAME WORST."
Brrrrrrrrrrrrrr
Her outburst forces me to hide my poor ears under my paws, even if it doesn't help much. Before I can tell her to calm down, a Monstrous Nightmare lands next to us. "Alpha, your human sent me. He asked me to bring you back to Berk as quickly as possible. Things aren't good on the island."
Big things happened in this chapter right? Epic battle like I love them. Two little emotional and (somewhat) romantic moment included too. What did you think of all this. Do you now understand what the riddle means? What exactly is going on with Toothless? Were you surprised? What is happening on Berk and with Gobber?
Some much questions unanwsered and it seems like the bad stuff isn't over yet. Or maybe it already is. Who knows?
I can't tell you when the next chapter will be out, but it will be you can count on me for that. Until then, take care.
