"Thoughts"
Chapter 1 – Devil
They both sat on the floor before a small table while facing each other. The female who called herself Sona sat elegantly in a 'seiza' position contrasted to Karzala – who was now Haneda Yuuga – where he sat normally.
Yuuga was cautious after Sona claimed herself as a Devil. If not for the magic circle earlier and the fact Yuuga saw her appeared out of nowhere, he probably would take her claim as a bad joke.
Being reincarnated and found himself in another person's body was crazy enough. And now he was facing a Devil where he only found their kind inside of fantasy works.
"Well, a story of reincarnation is only happening in fantasy works too. So maybe the fact there is a real Devil is not weird at all", he thought.
Sona's voice rang breaking the silence between them.
"So, do you believe I am a Devil, Haneda-kun?"
Yuuga took a deep breath before he answered her question.
"I don't believe it yet. It's true that I just saw a magic circle, then you appeared out of nowhere after it was gone. However, that doesn't make me believe that you are a Devil. It could be just a trick using CGI and now I'm talking with a hologram."
Although he believed that the existence of the Devil was not out of question due to his reincarnation, that doesn't mean what Sona said was true.
There was a possibility that she was a scammer who tried to get some money out of him.
"Well, I kinda expect that you won't believe me. Supernatural beings nowadays are hiding their existences from humans, after all. Then, I will show you the proof that I am indeed a Devil."
After saying that, Sona grew a pair of wings from her back. The wings resembled bat's wings and they were black colored. Then, she pointed her finger in a direction slightly on Yuuga's left side.
"If you are not convinced yet, I hope this will help you."
Her finger produced a small blue magic ball then flew straight towards the direction she pointed.
Yuuga's eyes went wide as he was shocked by the phenomena he saw. However, it was not greater than the shock caused by other phenomena afterward.
"It's very slow. No! No! That's not important! Is that really magic?!"
He panicked when he saw the magic ball flew in its direction. Then, suddenly something forced him to calm down and the panic he felt was gone.
He then decided to observe the magic ball.
It was true that in his eyes the speed of the magic ball was very slow.
He paid attention to the magic ball and followed its movement until it hit and created a hole in the wall.
After seeing that phenomenon, he guarded up and turned back to Sona and caught her smiling at him.
"It looks like you're saying the truth," he said while smiling nervously to Sona.
"No need to be so on guard. I am glad that you believe me now. Although, I must say that I didn't expect you to be able to follow that magic ball's speed with your eyes. First, you could sense my teleportation. And then, you can keep track of the speed of my little magic. It looks like you are a talented individual, Haneda-kun."
"I don't know what to say about that statement. To be honest, I can't believe a Devil is living in this small town and she is a student of respectable Kuoh Academy nonetheless."
Thanks to the memories of the real Haneda Yuuga, he could know immediately that Sona was a student of Kuoh Academy judging by her uniform.
According to that memory, Kuoh Academy was a respectable institute where only the bright and only the upper-middle-class to the upper-class students could attend.
For Haneda Yuuga who lost both his parents during middle school, attending such an academy was not something he could do as he lived from little amounts of money sent by his relatives and salaries from his part-time job in a convenience store.
"Believe me, other Devils are living in this town. However, I will talk about that at another time. Right now, I want to explain the current circumstances between you and me. I hope you are willing to listen to it."
"Please, I will be in your care."
Yuuga answered immediately because he would like to gain some information from her.
And thus, Sona started to explain everything.
She explained about one of her peerages sensed something interesting from Yuuga when she visited the store where he worked his part-time job. When she reported it to Sona, she ordered her familiar to watch over him.
Her familiar sensed a power from inside Yuuga which made her decide to met him to invite him to become her peerage.
The plan was slightly disturbed as Yuuga confronted a thief in an alley when he just went home from his part-time job. The thief stabbed him in the stomach and took all the money from his wallet.
Before Yuuga died, Sona arrived on the scene and reincarnated him as a Devil immediately.
"That's all for now. Do you have any questions before I continue, Haneda-kun?"
Yuuga calmly placed his hand on his chin as he was thinking calmly. However, in truth, he was scared after hearing her story.
"How strong is she if she able to reincarnate me as a Devil? Damn! She is so dangerous! Should I ask how she reincarnates me to find out what she is capable of?"
After thinking for a while, he reached his conclusion and decided to ask,
"One question, please. How do you reincarnate me as a Devil?"
"Very well. To answer your question –"
She stopped her sentence as she produced a magic circle from her hand and pulled a pawn chess piece from it.
"– This is one of the Evil Pieces. It may look like a normal chess piece, but it's actually a device to reincarnate other races as a Devil. It was founded and manufactured by one of the Four Great Satans, Ajuka Beelzebub, to help replenish the number of Devils after the death of many Devils in past events. At first, I want to use my remaining three Pawn Pieces to reincarnate you. However, after sensing your potential, I used a Rook Piece instead. The Evil Pieces were given to Pure-Blooded Devils who were a High-class so that they could gather servants of their own. Moreover, Evil Pieces almost follow the rule of chess. That means, I – as an owner of Evil Pieces and a High-class Devil – am your King while you are my Rook. And that makes me your mistress."
Hearing the explanation made Yuuga relaxed a bit. It was now confirmed that she didn't have a great power to reincarnate him and was using a tool.
However, he didn't like her saying about her being his mistress.
The last time he knew people who stood at the top, he suffered because of them. No. Everything suffered because of them, including the planet.
"What will happen to me if I refuse to become your slave?"
Sona sighed after hearing Yuuga's question then put her sharp gaze toward the young male in front of her.
Her sharp gaze made Yuuga put his guard more than before as he was waiting for her answer.
After a short while, Yuuga finally received the answer to his question.
"You will be considered as a threat and will be killed immediately. That is the fate of Stray Devils, the Reincarnated Devils who diverted away from their master."
The atmosphere in the room tensed up after her words and despair began to crawl into Yuuga's heart.
He couldn't believe that he was reincarnated just to become a slave of a Devil.
"I see. Then, I have no choice other than becoming your slave," said Yuuga in a desperate tone.
The tension vanished after Sona saw Yuuga in despair. As a way to cheered him up, she moved her hand and patted Yuuga like a mother pats her own child.
Yuuga's eyes went wide because of her action. But the shocked he received and the despair he felt soon cast away by the warmth of Sona's hand.
Then, Sona said,
"You do not need to worry, Haneda-kun. While it is true that you are my servant and must follow my order, that doesn't mean you are a slave. Sitri Clan, especially myself, will make sure to provide for your needs and respect your life as long as you don't cause harm and betray us. I promise that to you. Now, do you agree to become one of my peerages?"
He almost said 'yes' to her before he remembered the lore of Devil from YGGDRASIL.
The lore said that Devils were intelligent and would use their intellect to take advantage of anything they found to reach their goals. They would trick their target and used them in their schemes.
It means that the warmth of her hand and the kind words she said could be just a way to tricked him so he would agree to become her slave.
"How would I know that what you said is not a lie? According to legend, Devils are being that will do anything to trick humans to reach their goals."
Sona pulled her hand from Yuuga's head then sighed after hearing his words.
Then, she tried to explain how Devils had changed their ways of work. She also explained the reason for it. As such, she told him the summaries about the Great War between Three Factions – participated by Devils who were led by Old Four Satans, Fallen Angels who were led by Cadres, and Angels who were led by Four Great Seraphs as well as God of Bible – and Devil Civil War which was the conflict between the descendants of Old Satan Clan and Anti-Satan Faction with the result of Anti-Satan Faction's victory as well as the rise of New Four Great Satans who led the Devils until now.
The result of those two events was a decrease in the population of Devils. The decrease in the population, the introduction of Evil Pieces, and the ideology of the current Four Great Satans had changed how the Devil worked in the current generation.
"Have you been convinced yet, after hearing the summaries of those great events in history, Haneda-kun?"
Yuuga sighed and answered her while wearing a tired expression.
"So, your older sister is one of the Four Great Satans. It just makes me scared of you, you know? To be honest, I also don't fully trust you yet. However, I agree to join your peerage and see whether you lie or not. You can say it as an internship."
Yuuga knew that if he resisted her now, he will be forced to fight against a High-class Devil who has one of the Four Great Satans ready to help her while he was still a new Devil.
So, he wouldn't take a risk and decided to join her peerage for now and observed how the Devils work. If what she said was a lie and she treated him as a slave, then he would decide to leave and found a place to hide from the Devils' hunt.
Sona smiled beautifully hearing his answer.
"I see. I think it's the best conclusion for now. In that case, let us continue to the next subject. It is about the power within you. Most likely, you possess a Sacred Gear."
Yuuga furrowed his brows as he heard a word that he didn't know.
"Sacred Gear?"
"Yes. There are various Sacred Gears on this planet. They are items with powerful abilities bestowed upon humans by the God of the Bible as a part of his system to enact miracles on Earth. And one of those powerful items is residing inside your body."
Yuuga had an amazed expression on his face after he heard her explanation about Sacred Gear. He couldn't believe that one of the powerful items, bestowed by God, was residing inside his body. Although he still felt that it was not really his body.
"Items bestowed by the God. Maybe they are equal to Divine-class Item in YGGDRASIL. There's also a possibility that some of them are equal to World-class Item. Ah. I miss YGGDRASIL already."
Yuuga showed a bitter smile as he recalled YGGDRASIL. It was true that he got a new life, which could be a crazy one nonetheless. However, he just couldn't forget his old life, which although hard, he also had some fun because of YGGDRASIL.
"Why the bitter smile, Haneda-kun? Do you not like it if a powerful item resides within you?" asked Sona.
He realized his mistake and quickly put away his thoughts about his old life and answered,
"No. It is nothing. I just wondering whether can I use that powerful item."
Sona had an expression like an older sister who was facing a low confident younger sibling as she looked at Yuuga who was unsure of himself.
"It is up to you. Sacred Gears react to the thoughts and feelings of their wielder. So if you have confidence and keep believing that you can use it, then there's a high possibility that you can use your Sacred Gear to its maximum potential."
"Thoughts and feelings?"
"Yes. Sacred Gears are simple, yet complex at the same time. I will tell you how to call out your Sacred Gear for the first time. Based on my explanation that Sacred Gears react to the thoughts and feelings of their wielder, the effective way to call it out is to imagine the strongest thing in your opinion. Then, imagine that strongest thing in its strongest form."
"Is it really that simple? Why? Aren't Sacred Gears have powerful abilities? It is unthinkable how it is so simple to call them out for the first time," asked Yuuga with a confused expression on his face.
"I don't know the reason why it is so simple. Didn't I tell you that Sacred Gears are simple, yet complex at the same time? Although it sounds simple, the act to call out Sacred Gears for the first time is not an easy feat for normal humans. You need to have some supernatural energy or standing on the place filled with supernatural energy to call it out easier."
Yuuga narrowed his eyes, glancing at Sona with a face of distrust towards her.
"I see. So there's a possibility that you lied about this 'Sacred Gears' thing. There's no way to gain a strong power with that simple method."
"Well. Your house isn't filled with supernatural energy, so we can try to call out your Sacred Gear later and see if I'm lying or not. With that said, I will excuse myself for tonight so I can quickly take care of all the necessities so that you can be transferred to Kuoh Academy immediately. I think you will formally become a student of Kuoh Academy tomorrow and you can go to school on the day after. We will try to call out your Sacred Gear there."
Sona raised from her seiza and stood up as the magic circle appeared on her feet. Yuuga couldn't help but be baffled while his mouth opened wide after hearing her ridiculous words.
"Wait! Wait a moment!"
Yuuga screamed as he slammed the table in front of him. But before he could finish another word, a loud sound could be heard as well as Yuuga losing his balance and almost fell towards.
"Eh?"
"Hmm."
Sona looked at Yuuga with a satisfied smile on her face while Yuuga was dumbfounded as he did not know about what had happened.
He then scanned everything around him and found that the table he slammed had been destroyed, leaving wooden pieces scattered around the floor. Not only that, but the floor below also left a print of his palm with a large crack around it.
"Eh?! How?!"
Yuuga stood up and backed away immediately as he was so shocked by the event before something once again forced him to calm down.
He looked at Sona, asking for an explanation which he got immediately.
"It is the characteristic of Rook. Super-strength and high-durability. However, I advise you to learn to control your power or it will affect your daily lives," said Sona while fixing the table and the floor with her restoration magic.
"I-I get it. N-No! Wait! I want to tell you that I can't go to Kuoh Academy! I won't have money to pay for the fees! Besides, why I must be transferred to Kuoh Academy?!"
After confirming that everything was fixed, Sona answered,
"You must be transferred to Kuoh Academy so you can work with other members of my peerage easily. Please do not worry. I will take care of everything, including the fees. I will contact you again tomorrow. Please, have a good rest for tonight. I bid you farewell, Haneda-kun."
With those last words, Sona disappeared as the magic circle was gone. Leaving Yuuga alone in a state of confusion.
Sona appeared in a somewhat big entrance with the maids and male servants standing on both sides while they greeted her home with a gracious bow.
In front of her, two individuals also bowing to her.
One was an old man with a black butler attire while on his side was a tall girl with long black hair. Just like Sona, she wore a Kuoh Academy uniform and glasses before her eyes.
The old man was her butler, Ramsus. And the girl was her Queen, Shinra Tsubaki.
Sona walked elegantly as everyone around her raised their heads in unison.
When she a meter away from where Ramsus and Tsubaki stood, she spoke,
"Ramsus, please take care of all the necessities to transfer Haneda Yuuga into Kuoh Academy. I want him to formally become the academy's student by tomorrow. Also, prepare tea for two as I and Tsubaki will be having a conversation in the office."
"As you wish, My Lady."
Ramsus responded to her mistress without delay then began to carry out Sona's orders.
As Ramsus walked away to do his job, Sona ordered Tsubaki to follow her into her office.
Sona's office was a wide-luxurious room that had many luxurious furniture, paintings, and everything she needed to do her job, both as a President of Student Council, a King of her peerage, and an heir of Sitri Clan.
Sona and Tsubaki sat on a luxurious and comfortable sofa while facing each other.
After a maid put the tea for them on the table, they began their conversation.
"If I may ask, how is he, Sona-sama?" asked Tsubaki before sipping her tea.
Usually, Tsubaki would call Sona 'Kaichou' in public. However, she would call Sona with her name in private.
Sona answered her question after she sipped her tea.
"He is a cautious one, and quite smart. He doesn't trust me and my words easily. He can indeed be baffled during our conversation, but simple methods won't make him fall. He seems to think of any possibilities and the type who seeks information before deciding his action. While I intend to tell him about our history and my older sister, he managed to learn about them tonight. He used his distrust towards me to gain that information from me."
Sona smiled as she recalled their meeting not too long ago. She had fun having conversations with Yuuga. The way he constructed his words and the calm face while he was thinking still lingered in her mind.
"How long since I'm having fun when talking to other people? Well, talking with Rias and Tsubaki is fun. But, it's a different kind of fun. Talking with him feels like I'm playing chess against him."
The last time she felt that way was when she having a short conversation with another noble Devil. She didn't think that she would feel it again by having a conversation with someone who was not a noble.
He tried to learn about her so he could determine his next action. Just like a noble would do.
However, it was hard to charm him.
Unlike most of the nobles who would fall with one or two tricks, Yuuga didn't fall easily.
It was fun. However, she regretted that she didn't try to resist and playing words against him.
How he would proceed if she didn't give the answer he sought at that time? Now, Sona was curious.
After a minute, Sona pushed that thought aside as she realized that trying to playing words against him wouldn't benefit her. She was trying to gain his trust, after all.
If he decided to refuse her invitation and became a Stray because of her action, it just would put her in shame as an heir of Sitri Clan and the King of her peerage.
Seeing Sona smiled beautifully, Tsubaki decided to tease her mistress a bit.
"I see that he is your type, Sona-sama."
Sona shuddered a little by Tsubaki's teasing as she understood the meaning of her words perfectly. While it was true that Yuuga showed some factors that she liked, it didn't mean that she held a special feeling for him.
"It will take time to access whether he is truly the man I think he is or not. People always have another side, Tsubaki. We both know very well about that fact."
"I understand. Forgive my teasing, Sona-sama."
"It is forgiven. Now, let's put that aside and continue. Aside from him being cautious and quite smart, he also a talented individual in my opinion. He managed to feel my teleportation magic and able to follow the speed of my magic attack."
Tsubaki seemed quite shocked hearing the news. Not many Reincarnated Devils were able to sense demonic power and being able to follow the speed of a magic attack launched by a High-class Devil just hours after they became a Devil.
"T-That's quite remarkable."
Sona's smile grew after seeing Tsubaki's shocked expression.
"He will become a great addition for us. It is thanks to you that we can find him, Tsubaki."
"No, Sona-sama. I just happened to meet him by a coincidence. I'm glad that you can find such an individual."
"While I doubt that he can be stronger than Hyoudo Issei – who possesses Longinus, Boosted Gear – in the future, his brain and his cautiousness will proof to become a great asset for us."
Sona envied Rias who could gather individuals with great potential into her peerage, especially Hyoudo Issei who possessed a Longinus Sacred Gear.
While she was happy for her best friend, that didn't mean she was not jealous of her. She also hoped that she could do what Rias did.
So after she found Haneda Yuuga who held great potential, she couldn't help but feel joy inside of her heart.
"But before he became a great asset, the first thing we should do is gaining his trust and loyalty. If we can't do that, forget about becoming a great asset, he instead will turn into a great threat that will bring a massive problem for us."
"What's the plan, Sona-sama?"
Sona already had a plan to gained Yuuga's trust and loyalty.
Yuuga was a cautious individual. Moreover, he was quite smart and couldn't be tricked easily.
So the answer was,
"Being honest. We just do what we usually do. I believe he won't see any problem with our work's method."
Tsubaki bowed as she understood the order from her King.
With the topic of Haneda Yuuga concluded, they continued enjoying their tea before having a good sleep.
