Chapter 24 Distant Memory

A.N. – The past is about to be unmasked! Just note, this is MY ideas on how William's past was. From what me and the submitter talked about, this seemed most accurate. So, I hope you like it.

Guest – So far for the clone, the last episode with him in the center will be Ulrich's return or Down to Earth. 1. Do what you can. 2. I think what you gave me can be used in Fight to the Finish. I have ideas for the ending of Down to Earth and the beginning of my bonus chapter. 3. Possibly. I would tell you the basis, but I can't PM you. But I'm about 90% sure there will be virtualizations. I can't say who though for spoilers. 4. I could use it. 5. I kind of debating having clone Ulrich in episode 86. He's specter with superhuman strength, so he would have the power to hurt Yumi. Remember Jeremy's clone? 6. Definitely using it. 7. When you submitted this I didn't even start yet, so you're on time. Yes, I will be using it. 8&9. I could use both of those ideas.

On a snowy day in the mountains, a little Aelita was heard laughing, rolling a snowball. "Look at my giant snowball mommy!"

"Stay near the house darling" her mother replied.

"Well done my angel!" Franz says.

Aelita suddenly hears a wolf howl, growing scared. "Mommy! Daddy!" She turns around and sees two men in black suits staring at them. "Help!"

"Aelita!" her mom yells as she is taken away. "Aelita!"

Aelita runs towards her. "Mommy! Mommy!"

"Aelita…" Her mother gets taken away in a van.

"Mommy!"

Aelita trips and kneels as the snow starts to fall.

Aelita is crying in her sleep while holding Mr. Puck, wiping away her eyes with the blanket. She turns up to look up at the ceiling.

"That was probably shortly after William was given away," Aelita says. "But why out of all my dreams, I don't see or remember him."

"What? You're still having nightmares?" Yumi asks in surprise as the group is walking in the park. She thought after getting her full memory, these would stop.

"Well yeah, they keep coming every now and then. And what's more, they're always the same," Aelita explains as Odd and Jeremy have bigger bags. "But don't worry Jeremy, I'm used to them!"

"No Aelita, it's not your nightmares I'm worried about" he tells her, glancing away.

"I told you it's no big deal! Yumi won't be far for the holidays, and I'm staying here to keep an eye on Xana, so there's no need to worry!"

"I don't care about Xana! I just don't like leaving you here all alone. I'm gonna teel my dad I'm staying here."

"No, you're not!" Aelita argues back, crossing her arms. "You should spend the holidays with your families. For me, it's…its' not the same thing…"

Yumi glances at her. Her and William's father is…well, lost in the network, and their mother's fate is unknown.

"I would stay here too, but I believe my current dad has information that I need" William comments as they reach the entrance.

"You're going to confront him?" Odd asks.

"Yeah, but I'm going to try to get it out of him easily. Try nice and be aggressive if I have to. Speaking of what did you do about Ulrich's dad Jeremy?"

"Improvised. Called as Ulrich, and said I'm staying to study. Signed, sealed, and delivered" Jeremy responds.

"I'd rather stay too. My sisters drive me nuts. Last year, they locked me in the bathroom all night just because they thought it was funny!" Odd pouts a little.

"They did? But…that's even worse than my kid brother," Yumi couldn't help but feel sympathetic for him. "I thought they were older than you, Odd."

"They are, and they're a lot bigger than me too, that's the problem."

They laugh at the statement.

"Hey bro, isn't that your current dad's car over there?" Aelita points up ahead. He looks to the car and sees both of his adoption parents inside.

"Time to get some answers. Hopefully when we see each other again, I'll know more about my past" William says.

"Good luck man!" Odd gives him a high-five.

"See ya" Jeremy tells him.

"It's not all that long" Yumi adds in.

"Try and have some fun" his sister says.

He walks across the street to the car as a yellow car pulls up. "There's my father," Jeremy picks up his bag. "Aelita, are you sure that you-"

"Come on now, hurry up. I won't be all alone; I've got Kiwi for company!" Aelita smirks a little.

"Okay, goodbye for now."

"Oh, don't feed him any cheese at all. It gives him gas and that's more powerful than your energy fields" Odd tells her.

"Hi dad!" Jeremy says to him.

"So long!" Odd waves to them. The two cars take off.

William sits down, figuring out how to approach this situation. He knew this would happen eventually.

"I can see you have some friends" his father says.

"Best friends" William adds.

"Tell me about them."

"The blonde with glasses is Jeremy. The other blonde is Odd. The tall black haired Japanese girl is Yumi. And the pink haired girl is Aelita, my…uh my-"

"Your?"

"My sister."

"You mean like a sister?"

"No, my blood sister."

"No, you're an only child."

"Really? I think you two are hiding something from me."

Both of their eyes widen, trying to find out how he knows.

"Your friends seem very nice Jeremy" Mr. Belpois states.

"Uh yeah, I really like them a lot. They're my good buddies. Also, some of them have secrets" Jeremy says.

"The girl with the pink hair, is that Aelita? The one you're always talking about? She's very pretty! And I get the impression she likes you!"

Jeremy blushes with a smile.

"I better go," Yumi turns to Aelita. "I promised my mom I'd help her clean up."

"Okay, yeah, see you Yumi!" Aelita waves to her.

"Aelita, are you sure you don't wanna spend the holidays with us? I'll call my parents and tell them-"

"No, I'd just be in the way. And besides, I could use a little time alone…" Aelita looks away, Yumi nodding in understanding.

"Well…if you need anything, you know my number" Yumi holds up her phone.

"Okay! Have a nice holiday!" Aelita wishes her, watching her leave.

Aelita walks around campus as most people have gone home at this point. She walks back into her dorm room, smiling at Kiwi, but sleeping. She pets him, taking Mister Puck doll into her hands.

"Oh, he's so cute, I love him! What should I call him?" young Aelita says.

"How about Mister Puck? It's the name of an elf!" Franz says to her.

"Do you like him?" Aelita's mom asks.

"Oh yes, thank you mommy!" young Aelita exclaims, hugging her.

Aelita strokes the cheek of her doll, taking a deep breath.

Michael is whistling as he continues driving. Jeremy looks out the window.

"You've been very quiet son. Is there anything wrong?" He asks Jeremy.

"Uh no," Jeremy responds, wondering how long it was before he noticed. "I-It's nothing, I was just thinking of something else."

"Oh." He smiles in amusement.

"So, you finally found out" William's dad asks him.

"Yep, and I wanna know why? I would have been fine with the whole adoption thing, if you told me" William responds.

"We thought that if you knew it would lead you to think that your real parents didn't want you."

"And me and your father wanted to be your real parents, so we kept it from you" his mother adds.

"So, who are they?" William asks, to see if they know.

"Waldo and Anthea Schaffer" his father responds.

"Now I deserve a full rundown."

Aelita is leaning against the wall reading a book. Her computer turns on and she looks away from her book as she hears familiar music.

Franz played the piano at the Hermitage, turning towards her.

It's the same melody from the computer…she gasps as a chat box comes up. It's Franz Hopper himself…

Aelita?

"Daddy?" She sits in front of her computer. "Where are you?" She starts a messaging him, and the next thing she reads has her in shock. "Expecting you here on Lyoko? You're not on the network?" Before she can find out more, her computer starts bugging up. "Oh rats! It's bugging up!" She snaps her fingers and heads out the door.

Mr. Ishiyama is reading a newspaper. "Yumi, could you please give me a hand in here?" Mrs. Ishiyama calls out.

"As soon as I'm finished calling my friend" she replies back, deciding to check on Aelita. Mrs. Ishiyama appears in the doorway regardless.

"Your phone call can wait! I need you to help me right now! If not, I'll never finish all the housework in time!"

"But mom, you've got a whole week to go it."

"Yes, and as usual, your father's not going to lift a finger, so a week may not be enough!"

"Huh?" He looks up from his paper. "What'd I do this time?"

Yumi groans at this and stands up, walking away.

Aelita enters the computer lab through the elevator. She walks up to the chair and sits down. There's a message waiting for her from her father.

"There isn't much time…not much time for what? Here are the coordinates. See you in a minute, my dear!"

"See you in a minute my dear."

That was the last thing he said to her before they were virtualized together…she opens her eyes and starts a delayed virtualization. She crawls down into the scanner room, running up to one and getting inside. She's transferred, scanned, and sent to Lyoko.

Aelita ends up in the ice sector, landing safely. She gets up and looks around, only to see a giant yellow bubble.

"What's that thing? A simulation bubble?" She runs towards it and comes to a stop. She puts her arm through it before slowly stepping inside. She falls onto snow as she's suddenly in her real clothes. She looks up to see the house from her memories, gasping. "How can this be?!"

She walks across the snow, hearing the same piano tune again…Franz turns around to see the girl standing right there. "Daddy?"

"Aelita," he holds out his arms and she runs into them. "We've got so much catching up to do, and there's so little time!"

Tears stream down her face as she feels the warmth of the embrace. Finally, she could be with him again.

"I thought you were lost in the network!"

"Lost? No, my dear. When Xana destroyed Lyoko, I managed to escape. I have information to give you, but first, I wanted so much to hold you in my arms."

"But how did you-"

"I had to create this simulation bubble so that I could finally-"

"This is fantastic!" She smiles happily. "Everything is just the same!"

"Yes, this bubble will allow us to do many things, my dear. Like spending an evening together at last."

"I wish William were here."

"Why?"

"You should know, he's my brother."

Aelita would soon learn this was a big mistake…

"Aelita, come on, pick up, will you?" Yumi asks as she enters her room. Hiroki suddenly comes out of nowhere, scaring her. "What are you doing in here?! Get out!"

"Calling the now dumb Ulrich?" he teases her.

"Mind your own business! Do I ask you about Milly Solovieff?" He blushes in embarrassment, growling as he runs out of the room. Yumi picks up the phone again. "Hello Jeremy?"

"For how long of a time? Her phone battery might be dead, that's all. Think you can go over there and check it out. Keep me posted, okay?" He hangs up the phone. "Uhh, dad? Um, I forgot my laptop back at the dorm, and I, um…"

Michael turns the car around without even listening to the rest. "I got the idea Jeremy. Your laptop wouldn't have pink hair by any chance, would it?"

"Huh?"

"You know, I can understand that. I was in love once too."

"You were, with who?"

"Who else? With your mother."

"Okay, we adopted you when you were a month old. We were friends with your mother and father, and they wanted us to have you. They felt like they could protect one and they choose Aelita over you. But they trusted you to us in hopes that we would give you a better life. And tell us, did you get a better life?" William's father asked.

William recalled all of Aelita's events in her life from her mother being kidnapped all the way to France after the government found them.

"I guess. Better than my sisters" William responds.

His mom pulled out a photo. "Here's a photo that was taken after you came home."

William took the photo. It showed Franz, Anthea, Aelita, and him in Anthea's arms. He now had something to remember them by. His phone rings.

"Yeah Jeremy? Really? I just hope Xana doesn't have her. Okay, meet you there. I think I got what I needed. Dad, pull over."

"Where are you going?" His dad asks.

"To help my sister," he dials Odd. "Odd, meet us at the factory. My sister is not answering, and we think Xana is involved."

"Okay, be right there. Soon as I tell my parents" Odd responds.

"Well, are you flying today or not?" the airport security asks him.

"Just a second. Hello Adele? It's Odd. Uh huh. Oh, sorry Pauline. Hey listen. You think you could ask Elizabeth, to tell Marie to say to Louise that she should let mom and dad know I missed my flight? Uh huh. What do you mean, tell them myself? Hello? Okay, change of plans. Nothing like sibling loyalty." He walks off.

Yumi arrives at Aelita's room to see if she's there. "Aelita?" She notices that her computer is bugged. "Expecting you here on Lyoko?"

"No, as long as Xana hasn't been defeated, I can't rematerialize myself," Franz is answering Aelita's questions. "But you, however, should be able to free your young friend. What was his name again?"

"Ulrich."

"Yes, of course. I'm gonna send a program to Jeremy via the supercomputer. By the way, how's your fight against Xana progressing?"

"We're hunting him down in the network thanks to our virtual ship the Skidbladnir."

"Hmm, the Skidbladnir? Heh heh, what a strange name."

"Nut you know that name," she points out. "It's in the book of Viking Legends that you used to read to me before I went to sleep."

"Yes, of course, the Skidbladnir. How could I forget?"

She smiles, but still fells like something was missing.

Michael arrives at the school and Jeremy rushes onto campus. "Thanks Dad!" He sees Yumi running across from him. "Yumi!"

She stops at his voice, turning around. "Hurry Jeremy! Aelita virtualized herself onto Lyoko!"

"What?! But why did she do that?"

"Her father asked her to."

Aelita looks away, glaring towards the man again. "Is something wrong, my precious?"

"Why'd you ask me to come to Lyoko daddy?" Aelita asks.

"Because I wanted to see you. It's been such a long time."

"It's dangerous, Xana could attack at any time."

"Not as long as I'm with you."

"You know…when I said that everything here was the same as I remember it, I meant it."

"I'm glad you liked it. I wanted you to feel as if it was your home, our home."

"It's true, everything's here, nothing's missing…except for one little thing."

"Oh really? What's that?"

"My mother and brother."

"But…you remember dear. Your mother disappeared and your brother is not here on Lyoko now."

"Yes, and I wanna see them before they left, more than anything else in the world, and you know that. You've always known. And since you're a perfectionist, you'd have recreated them here in the simulation bubble. That is, unless you aren't really my father!"

"Aelita."

"Stay away from me Xana!" The specter flickers as she opens the door. She is quickly grabbed and stopped by Ulrich.

"Hello there princess" he looks at her with the symbol of Xana in his eyes.

Yumi and Jeremy arrive in the computer lab. "Something's fishy" Jeremy tells Yumi as they enter.

"What if it was Hopper who contacted Aelita?"

"Xana's pulled this one on us before, I don't think Hopper would risk this with his own daughter," he explains while checking Lyoko. "Aelita is somewhere in the ice sector. Huh? In a simulation bubble?"

"She's in a what?"

"A copy of the real world. A sort of ghost channel. Aelita's fallen into a trap," he turns his chair around to look at her. "Get ready, you're going in right now."

She smirks as she presses the button.

Aelita is trapped between Franz and Ulrich as he is still gripping her arm. "You should know better Aelita. I'm better than you" Ulrich tells her.

"That's what you think!" Aelita responds before breaking out of his hold. He turns to the specter.

"Don't let her get away! After her!"

"Transfer Yumi. Scanner Yumi. Virtualization" Jeremy says, finishing the process.

Yumi arrives in the ice sector, landing in a platform. "Jeremy, I didn't land inside the bubble" she points up ahead.

"I know, I can't virtualize you directly inside of it. You'll have to find your own way in."

"Any idea how?" She asks as she runs.

"Not really, but if you ask me, Xana's probably sending his guest."

A laser fires right past her and she turns around to face the monster.

"For sure. He even left a couple of bouncers at the door."

Two tarantulas are firing at her from behind. She spins around, fan in hand and then she flips to the side. She hides behind a rock.

Aelita looks over her shoulder as the specter turns into a wolf, sprinting after her. Ulrich laughs as he follows.

Yumi hears the lasers as they hit the rock and she runs into view of the monsters. She slides to a stop, pulling out her fans and throwing them. The tarantulas hit the weapons and knock them out of range. Yumi spins around and catches them, getting hit.

"Be careful Yumi, that's 20 life points you just lost!" Jeremy warns her. The door opens and he glances to see the others standing there. "Perfect timing, you two. Head straight for the scanner room. Yumi and Aelita are in big trouble."

"What's happening?" William asks.

"I'll fill you in later, now get going huh?"

Odd presses the button and they descend.

Yumi runs up to the rock, hiding again. She peeks between the tiny space to see the tarantulas aimed at her.

Aelita continues running as fast as she can, the wolf leaping over her. He lands in front of her, as Ulrich arrives to corner her.

"Face it Aelita. You're all Xana's now!" Ulrich states.

"Virtualization" Jeremy virtualizes the other two.

They land in front of the tarantulas, and immediately defend themselves from the tarantulas. William uses his armor before using his sword to block the lasers. Odd fires his laser arrows and takes off into a run. Odd hides behind some rocks, and William sees where he goes.

"Super smoke!" he evades the lasers as he heads over to Odd and Yumi.

"Good to see you again. How's your vacation?" she asks.

"Eventful and eye-opening. Where's my sister?"

"Somewhere inside that bubble thing" Yumi points to it.

"She's always gotta be different, doesn't she?" Odd asks as he leaves the cover. "Laser arrow!" He fires and destroys one of the tarantulas.

Ulrich and the wolf approach Aelita. "Just surrender now Aelita!" Ulrich demands.

She smirks at the two. "You win Ulrich" Aelita says as she kneels down, touching the bubble, and does the same thing she did to save the others when they were trapped.

"NO!" Ulrich shouts before the bubble shatters. Aelita looks around to see she's back in the ice sector. She turns around to see Ulrich and a blok. "You're still at Xana's mercy Aelita. This isn't over!" Ulrich points a saber to her.

"Yeah, not yet!" Aelita prepares an energy field.

William super smokes until he reaches his tarantula.

"Hi there friend," he stabs the eye before super smoking away. "Goodbye friend."

Jeremy's computer beeps, and he sees something that confuses him. "Huh? The simulation bubbles disappeared, go and help Aelita! Step on it!"

"Okay Einstein," Odd punches his fists together. "Can you call some taxis?"

"Coming up" Jeremy taps enter, and three vehicles appear. Odd and William get on successfully, but Yumi is devirtualized before she can get on.

"Bloks, watch out!" William states.

"What was it, Jeremy?" Yumi asks, as she is uncertain what hit her.

"A blok" Jeremy responds. She groans at this.

"Guess we better unblock the situation!" Odd jokes to William.

"Get real. First, get my sister back!" William says with determination.

"Here we go!"

Ulrich sees the two approaching. "Manta!" A flying manta appears. "Stall them!" Ulrich commands.

"Manta incoming!" William warns Odd. He moves back and forth to avoid the lasers, but also move farther away from Ulrich. Aelita swipes her bracelet, trying to fly away, but the blok knocks her down.

"Sorry Aelita, but I have someone who wants to see you" Ulrich says as he pushes Aelita closer to the edge. The boys can't help still distracted with the manta.

"Aelita no!" Jeremy squeezes his eyes shut.

"Jeremy, rematerialize her, quick!" William urges him.

Ulrich kicks her off the edge and into the digital sea. William stops to see the data stream rise. "No! It can't be!"

"No, this can't be happening, not Aelita!" Jeremy exclaims as Yumi arrives. "Yumi, Aelita just fell into the digital sea!"

Her eyes widen at the explanation.

William drives in anger towards Ulrich. "You're going to regret messing with my sister Xana!"

"Okay Romeo, this is really gonna cost you!" Odd adds, also furious.

William jumps off the bike, launching it at Ulrich, who flips over it.

"Super sprint!" Ulrich says, ignoring William, concerned with the digital sea.

"What's up with him? It's lime he's expecting something" William says.

"I don't know…without Aelita, it's all over" Jeremy says, almost in tears. He rubs a temple, and something beeps. He looks up and notices it.

"Huh?! Einstein, something weird is happening!" Odd says, looking at the digital sea.

"Yeah, hang on. I think I get the picture."

A blue sphere with a purple aura rises out of the water. Xana at this time takes full control of Ulrich.

"Hello Hopper, nice to finally see you" Xana says through Ulrich. Xana's plan was almost complete.

The sphere heads to the surface.

"Hey, what is that thing?" Yumi looks at the screen.

"It's what I thought. I was right" Jeremy says.

The sphere reaches Ulrich and the two bloks, which prepare to fire. "Kill him!" Xana orders as the bloks knock it across to the other side. They continue firing at it.

"Jeremy, I think that orb is-" William starts.

"You're right! It's your father, Franz Hopper!" Jeremy exclaims.

"Wait a minute, if Xana's trying to lure out our old man, how come he doesn't target me like Aelita?"

"Because Xana never knew that you were Hopper's son."

"Till now" Yumi says.

"Is Xana coming after me next?" William asks.

"Hopefully not, Aelita's more vulnerable. All we can hope is that Aelita didn't tell Xana you were related" Jeremy hopes. Franz floats over the platform.

"I gotta a score to settle with Ulrich."

"Okay, then I'll go and do a number on that blok!" Odd flies and destroys a blok. Xana engages William.

"You crossed a line Ulrich!"

"You're dealing with Xana now!" Xana says drawing both sabers.

"Good. I've been waiting to fight the mastermind."

Both sabers glow bright red and stay that way as they clash swords. The blok continues to fire at Hopper, and then he drops something off.

"It looks like he dropped something off" Yumi states.

"You're right, he did. It was Aelita!" Jeremy smiles in relief.

The blok continues its attack, Aelita wakes up. "Daddy…" she murmurs.

The manta comes for extra firepower. Odd comes and destroys it. "Laser arrow!" Aelita smiles at him. "It's great to see you again princess!" He flies towards the blok.

"Hopper's losing energy! Take out that blok and make it snappy too!" Jeremy urges.

"We're doing all we can, Einstein!" Odd flies past the blok as Xana and William are still fighting. Xana eventually wins and devirtualizes William. He looks for Odd, seeing him fighting the blok. He throws a saber that devirtualizes Odd from behind.

"Energy field!" Aelita opens up her hand, firing at the blok and missing. The blok freezes Aelita's legs.

Xana jumps over to where Franz is.

"It's all over" Jeremy closes his eyes.

Hopper floats towards the edge. Xana is nearby. "You've been a thorn in my side for too long. Time to die!" Xana threatens, drawing a saber.

"Daddy, you have to get away. Hurry!" Aelita cries. Aelita hits Xana, giving her father enough time to escape back into the digital sea. Xana approaches Aelita.

"You saved him today, but next time you may not be so lucky!" Xana stabs Aelita through the stomach, devirtualizing her. He turns to where Hopper disappeared. "You may have escaped this time, but we will see each other again."

Aelita reappears in the scanner to see her brother and Odd nearby.

"Saving you gave us a scare is an understatement princess" Odd comments.

"I know someone who's one wish is to see you. Come on" William nods at her.

"I hope he gives that fill in he promised us because I don't know what's going on."

"It's pretty obvious" Jeremy states in Aelita's room.

"There he goes again" Odd slightly rolls his eyes.

"You see, when Lyoko was destroyed, Hopper wasn't spread out over the network. He managed to escape."

"He disappeared on purpose, is that it?" Yumi asks him.

"That's right. To get away from Xana, which is why he's constantly trying to throw Aelita into the digital sea all the time. He knows that's the only thing that could get Hopper to come out of hiding."

"I'm sorry William," Aelita speaks up. "I told Xana you were my brother, so he could use us to bait the other now."

"It just means we have to fight harder now. And not fall for Xana's traps," William replies. "You have nothing to be sorry for. I understand why you did what you did."

"As long a sour father's alive, he'll always be a big threat to Xana."

"And our friend Xana knows it. That's exactly why he took full control over Ulrich. So, he could watch the fall of Hopper" Jeremy adds.

"Well, before we blow Xana away for good, why don't we give each other our presents, huh?" Odd says.

"I thought after our vacation we'd do this" William tells him.

"Yeah, I know. Here Einstein, this one's for you. Since Xana made us come back earlier than expected, why wait, right?" he hands out his presents to everyone. Jeremy squeezes his rubber ducky.

"That's cool Odd. Thanks a lot, but, um…what am I supposed to do with it?" Jeremy asks.

"Nothing at all, that's what make sit fun, don't you think?" Odd asks as Aelita holds her fork/spoon taped together. "You're not opening your presents?"

"No, Yumi told me in Japan, you never open a present in front of the person who gave it to you" William replies. Yumi smile sand winks at him.

"Thank you, Jeremy," Aelita smiles at the large pink scarf around her.

"And that isn't all Aelita!" Jeremy holds a book that was given to him. "Tonight, you're coming home with me! My parents want to you to stay for the holidays."

"But I don't wanna bother them…"

"It's no bother at all, they're the ones who insisted! I'll give you my room, and I'll sleep in the living room. We've got a really comfortable couch!"

"What about Xana?"

"You know, I'm sure Xana could use a vacation too!" He chuckles and notices Aelita's look. "Whatcha you thinking about?"

"About our father. When he saved me, even in his virtual form…I could fell his presence. Like he was holding me in his arms."

Yumi showed a little sadness as the only thing she wanted was Ulrich. She guesses that this is one gift she was gonna have to wait for.

William pulled Aelita aside. "Hey sis, I also got this from my parents, and I think you should have it." He hands Aelita the photo.

"But what about you?"

"I can always make copies."

"Thank you! It's wonderful!" Aelita says, hugging him and nearly crying. William closes his eyes, smiling, and returns the hug. The group just watches.
