A/n: so I made a slight edit to the end of the previous chapter just to give a bit more detail about Jake's appearance since I realized I've been lacking in that. The edit is in the paragraph right before the letter to Ellie. Apologies for the change, but as I'm sure you know if you've been reading my work for a while they change a lot and I'm almost never satisfied with how they turn out. Of course I will try to keep these changes to a minimum but sometimes I can't help it. I will always flag important changes in updates like this however.
Apologies once again for the delay in the chapter, I had originally intended to make each day in Seattle its own day but this one was already getting a bit long and you guys have waited long enough. Also day 2 might end up being a bit less eventful so I figured I'd put this out.
Anyway, thanks for reading and please review!
Seattle day 1
After having snuck out of Jackson, Jake and Tommy had been on the road for Seattle for the past few days and were making good progress. They would be within the city boundary soon, their journey made significantly easier from riding horseback.
"So now that we're getting close, a few more details about who we're hunting would be useful," Jake enquired.
"I counted seven of 'em," Tommy began to explain as they rode along the highway towards the city. "Based on what Ellie said, the one we saved, Abby, is the one who killed Joel in the end. She's got brown hair and quite a bit of muscle on her."
"You got any sort of plan?"
"We get into the city first, then see what information we can get, a map or anyone wandering around we can squeeze some info out of," Tommy explained to which Jake silently agreed to.
Soon the two had entered the walls of the abandoned QZ but found little that would be of use in the immediate area. There were few people around and thankfully Infected were also scarce. Along the walls they did find graffiti that suggested the WLF were at least here at some point so it was a promising lead. The pair then arrived at gate East 1 and found their progress further into the city blocked, since the gate required a code to unlock.
Not to be deterred, the two decided to take a detour through the adjacent buildings to see if there would be any clues as to getting past. What they discovered instead was an outpost for the WLF. Stealthily, the two of them managed to clear out the small crew that was stationed there all except for two, which they had purposefully left alive for interrogation. They were then able to restrain the two remaining guards in chairs so that they could question them, tying them up in chairs on opposite ends of the room.
"This one here was at Jackson," Tommy announced as he got a clearer look at his face.
"Perfect," Jake said cockily as he drew a knife and pressed it against the neck of the other man they had restrained, but not so much to draw blood, yet. "So, we get what we need out of the these two, then fuck that one up."
"That's the idea," Tommy confirmed "you think you can loosen that one up while I have my way with this one?"
"Gladly," Jake replied, then sliced off two of the man's fingers, causing him to erupt into pain. At the same time Tommy began to beat the other man, making blood splatter out from his face with each blow.
"What the fuck do you want?" Jake's victim asked through his screams of pain.
"Seems like you're a bit of a talker, well that makes everything easier for all of us," Jake taunted before jamming his knife into the man's shoulder, making him scream even more. "You won't be talking though. We're gonna ask you both the same questions, you're gonna write it in your blood first, then we're gonna confirm it with the other bitch. If you're lying, you both scream more," Jake explained before stabbing him in the other shoulder "understood?" Jake questioned tauntingly with the man nodding between his pained tears. Jake looked over to Tommy to see how he was progressing with his victim, to see the man already covered in bruises and blood. For a second the sight reminded him of Joel, causing anger to flare in him, resulting in Jake twisting the knife in the man's shoulder to take his anger out on something. Jake then grabbed the man by his hair and cut the restraints loose, then throwing him down to the floor face first. He then plunged two knives into the back of the man's knees, preventing him from moving. With the damage to his shoulders the man wouldn't be much of a threat, having lost most use of his arms, but just enough to write with the hand bleeding out. "So first question, what's the code to the gate outside?" Jake asked to which the wearied man didn't respond to right away. Jake breathed a sigh of annoyance before crouching down beside the man and dragging his knife along his back "sometime today," Jake demanded, this time causing the man to move his hand to form numbers on the ground. "Tommy," he spoke up, prompting Tommy to repeat the question to his guard, then verifying the code matched.
The two continued their interrogation until they were able to confirm the number of people who came to Jackson and their names, though the two weren't of much help for finding the people in question. Once they got the information they needed, they finished off their victims, causing Jake to breathe a deep sigh and take a moment to collect himself. "You alright?" Tommy asked concernedly.
"Yeah, fine," Jake responded sharply as he began to wipe the names written in blood so as to not leave any clues for the enemy "just, some bad memories," he added with a deep breath. "We should move," Jake stated with Tommy nodding in response. The two then exited the building, returning to their horses and the gate that had blocked their path previously.
The pair continued to ride through the derelict city, not seeing many WLF around the area but also few Infected, which they were thankful for. The two figured they'd need to find a map of some sort before they'd be able to make much more progress in finding their targets, maybe interrogate some more people to find Abbey and the other's locations. Since WLF soldiers were far and few between the two searched inside buildings for a map, perhaps an abandoned radio post, anything to give them more clues. "You know, based on what Ellie said it sounds like they were after you too," Tommy stated as the two rode along.
"Doesn't matter. We kill em first" Jake replied curtly.
"Easier said than done. Right now we've had little luck findin-"
"Wait," Jake cut off abruptly then paused while putting a finger to his lips then heard a small group of Infected nearby. A moment later and a runner had noticed the pair and began to wail loudly as it ran towards them, attracting the attention of others. "Shit, we gotta go," Jake stated with urgency as he instructed his horse into a gallop with Tommy following close behind. As the Infected trailed the two their numbers seemed to increase further, being attracted by all the noise. The two soon found themselves cornered, having inadvertently riden into an area that couldn't be passed by the horses. "Shit,"Jake cursed as he turned to see a small horde of Infected closing in on them. Within moments the Infected had surrounded both Jake and Tommy's horses, latching onto the horses and clawing away at them. The two tried to keep them off the horses but to no avail, causing them both to jump off their horses with the horde between the two of them. "Tommy!" Jake called out over the Infected as he fended them off.
"Just go get out of here!" Tommy called out as he realised there were too many too many for them to defeat. With the two divided by the Infected they ran in opposite directions, trying to avoid being ripped to shreds by the creatures. Soon Jake ran into a wide street, flanked by buildings on both sides and covered with abandoned, overturned cars while the Infected continued to pursue. As he ran down the road he spotted a group of armed guards, likely WLF, further along. The group then took notice of Jake and the pursuit horde, prompting them to open fire with machine guns. Once Jake realised that the WLF members had taken aim he dove behind the cover of a van. The sound of gunshots diverted the Infected's attention away from Jake, allowing him to take the opportunity to hide away in one of the adjacent buildings. With the number of infected being split between he and Tommy, and the better number's and equipment of the WLF they were able to clear most of the infected in a few minutes. Jake decided not to interfere and let the two sides kill each other, as to avoid the eyre of either. "They're a lot better equipped than I thought," Jake muttered to himself while observing from behind a window of a nearby building "guess this won't be easy."
"Shit that was a whole lot of them wasn't it," a male WLF members spoke up after clearing out the Infected "wonder what attracted their attention?"
"Didn't you see? They were chasing some trespasser that got away while we were busy with the Infected," another responded as the group began to look around the area "let's kill em then head on over to the FOB, Issac's ordered everyone to head there," the man added before the patrol began to scatter in search of Jake.
"FOB?" Jake questioned internally "what the hell is that? Well either way it seems the whole of the WLF is headed there. I should find at least one of the targets there. And this Issac guy, he wasn't one of the names but seems like he's got information," Jake concluded before preparing himself to combat the patrol currently hunting him. He silently picked them off one by one as they entered buildings in pursuit of him. Soon he had killed all but one, at which point he decided to take him alive for questioning. The WLF member was now in the same room as him, just on the other side of a counter Jake was using as cover. As soon as the man was directly in line with Jake, he hopped over the counter and kicked him away, causing him to tumble to the floor and drop his handgun. Jake quickly kicked it away before the guard could scramble to it. The man tried regardless, prompting Jake to kick him in his teeth, knocking him onto a wall.. Without a second's doubt, Jake drew his sword and plunged it into the man's thigh, making him scream out in agony.
"What's the FOB?" Jake questioned calmly while crouching to meet the man at eye level as he writhed and squirmed in pain. The man then formed a fist and tried to swing at Jake, to which Jake simply moved out of the way and grabbed the arm, then proceeded to break it. "An answer now," Jake demanded over the continued screams.
"It's...it's the forward base. We haven't been told what's going on. Just have orders for everyone to report there," the man explained through his tears of agony.
"Where is it?"
"I-it's marked on the map in my pocket," the man responded as he indicated with his head which pocket it was in. Jake then moved to retrieve the map while keeping the man within his view, so he wouldn't make any moves. After a few moments of rummaging through the man's pocket, Jake drew a map, them unfolded it to see the FOB circled on the location.
"And who's this Issac?"
"He's our leader."
"Hmm, and you know anything about the ones in your group that went to Jackson awhile back?"
"Wh-what about them?"
"Know where I can find em?"
"I don't know shit man, please just let me go," the man begged in a panic. Proving his usefulness had been fulfilled, Jake rose to his feet and then drew his blade from the man's leg, making him wince as it happened. "No please don't-" the man pleaded but was interrupted by Jake bringing the sword across his neck, slicing his head off.
"Keep it cool," Jake told himself as he let out a deep sigh. He then proceeded to pat the man down further if he had anything else of use. Aside from some ammo he also found a remote radio clipped to his pants, which Jake took and clipped it to his own. With a new objective in mind Jake set out towards the FOB.
After some time of traveling through the broken city with the guidance of the map he retrieved, Jake had arrived at the FOB as the sun began to set, though before he got too close he had realised that the area was heavily populated with WLF members. Deciding that charging in head first would be a bad move, he decided to climb up to the roof of a high building nearby to scout out the operation. From above he could see the group's large numbers, as well as that they used military vehicles. "This isn't going to be easy," Jake commented aloud as he looked around the area. He continued to scope the surroundings out, searching for some less defended entrance he could sneak through but couldn't see any options. Even still, if he entered he had doubts as to how he'd fare once inside, given the concentration of WLF forces. Jake groaned in frustration unsure of what to do as he put his face in his hand in annoyance. A moment later the radio he'd stolen that was clipped to his waist began to buzz; Jake then brought the device to his face and listened for what was said.
"Abby declared AWOL by Isaac. Suspected of heading westward, units 104 through 109 are ordered to search from the FOB up to Martyr's gate. Beware of Scars in the area. Detain the target and return her to the FOB for questioning from Issac," the voice on the radio explained, giving Jake a new destination. He then drew the map from before and scanned it for a location called 'Martyr's gate'. After a few seconds of looking he found the name written beside a circle drawn on the map.
"Perfect," he exclaimed as he began to move towards his new destination.
