Author's note: I was going to do an Edward pov like Midnight Sun but my GOD is Edward melodramatic. I tried to capture his melodrama without going insane while writing by doing it in third person instead. I also got a review not understanding why Bella would tell Jessica anything so I updated the first chapter a little to hopefully better explain that. I hope you all enjoy!
"I think you've made your opinion on the subject of my intellect clear, too." Bella's eyes narrowed.
Edward gave her an apologetic smile. He must have offended her accidentally at some point. No matter, his charm disarmed humans without problem.
The human was not disarmed.
"It's not me who needs to smarten up. I would avoid you actually if you ever gave me a chance to, but you seem to have some sort of obsession with sticking in my peripherals and blaming me for your constant presence."
Edward tried to reply but could only manage an indignant sputter of her name before he was cut off.
"Oh save it Edward call me crazy or stupid all you want, you said you're waiting for me to realize you won't be a good friend well here's my realization. Stay away from me Edward I'm not playing this stupid game of hot and cold anymore. Oh and forget about Seattle while we're at it."
Edward could do nothing but watch as Bella stormed off back to her friends, her back rigid and facing him. He was hit with many loud thoughts and he struggled to keep his composure under them and the rejection.
Alice was hurt as she watched the future she was so sure of melt away. Her chances of becoming friends diminishing to nothing as Bella stormed off from her stupid brother.
Bella's friends were all loud with curiosity at what happened but even after she snapped at him she still didn't reveal anything. Edward couldn't appreciate that Bella was still lying for him but he took note of it.
Underneath the loud mental hurt from Alice, Rosalie rejoiced. She had some respect for the human standing up to one of their kind and was hopeful this would put Edward in his place and stop him in his plight to doom them all for this girl.
Edward was crushed. All his plotting and planning for their future and he barely gave a thought to what would happen if she rejected him. Wasn't this what he initially wanted? To change the future Alice saw? To find a third option that didn't leave Bella dead or undead?
It was not a wish he held onto any longer. His resolve strengthened, he would continue pursuing her. He couldn't let this blip in the road stop him now. He just had to come at her from a different angle was all. He started to flick through different decisions slowly, fully fleshing them out and giving Alice a chance to see the payoff before moving onto the next. Bella proved stubborn and his resolve waivered again. All the futures ended the same. Rejection. In some she asked for a restraining order. In others she was even willing to brave Rosalie's death glare to ask her help in getting Edward to stop pursuing her. She even called Esme and tried to plead with the matriarch to get him to stop.
Edward stop. There's no use her mind is made up and if she is pushed to talk to one of us to get you to stop you know Jasper will see her as a threat again.
Edward bristled at this. He wasn't so ungentlemanly that his pursuit would be seen as anything as uncouth as stalking. And yet the new visions remained. So much more solid than the visions of a relationship from just that morning. The bell rang and Emmet clapped Edward on the shoulder before heading to class. Looks like you got your wish Edward. You found the third future that keeps Bella away from our family. Alice walks to her next class sadly.
Edward makes his way home. Someone will cover for him, he has more important things to worry about. He almost ran right back to Alaska before remembering Tanya. Is this what she feels whenever he rejects her? Surely not, he was a conquest to her nothing more. And yet if she feels even a fraction of his heartache he holds much sympathy for her. He turns and heads for his meadow. He needs quiet, he needs to plan. But plan what? Alice saw all of his potential pursuits crashing and burning before him. Pushing Bella farther and farther away with each attempt. He couldn't open his heart to this ache again. But could he truly leave her alone? He is completely unsure.
Restless he begins running again before ending up back at Bella's house. Still within the treeline he has a perfect view of Bella's room. He watches her type away at her computer, barely content just watching her from a distance. He yearned to go in there, smooth things over with her and refuse to leave until things were right between them but he knew a version of Alice's new visions would be brought to fruition if he did. So he stayed put. Pretty soon Bella got up from her computer and left his line of sight.
Alice saw Bella's decision to call her friends and decided to hold a family meeting. As bad as she felt excluding Edward she saw that letting him be here would only make things worse and the risk to Bella's life would be back forcefully. Alice was rarely so hands-on with her visions. In most cases she found that allowing the future to take its course with just small nudges was best. But this situation called for more action. Her brother needed help and their family could only do that if they knew the whole story with her visions.
"Bella believes Edward was negging her. All her futures with us are gone but if we don't do something about Edward he'll end up killing her."
Rosalie managed to hide her amusement at the Swan girl's assumptions about her brother, Emmett had no such restraint.
"Oh man! Negging? This is too good." Emmet cackled.
"Can you see anything else Alice? Where is Edward now?" Esme asked, concerned.
"He's made the decision to stay watching outside Bella's house instead of in her room as he's been doing-" Alice got sucked into a vision.
Bella, Angela, and Jessica are all sitting in Bella's room and she's beginning her explanation of what happened at lunch.
"Okay so the short answer is Edward was negging me."
"Negging?"
"Well the first day he didn't talk to me at all but he acted like I was the worst thing to have ever happened to him. He made it very clear that it was me he took an issue with before he disappeared for the rest of my first week. Then he started this game of hot and cold. When he came back he was very interested in why I moved here and personal details about myself then suddenly he shut down and practically ran out of class when the bell rang. Then he saved me from the van but.."
"But?"
"But when I asked about… why he was insisting I had hit my head harder than I did he was all cold. As if I was stupid and didn't know how my own body felt. On top of that he was constantly coming up to me just to tell me to stay away from him and how he's not someone I should be friends with. That was actually the last straw at lunch, he said it again right after apologizing for being rude and saying he wanted to be friends. I told him to stay away from me. Oh! And this morning he had asked if he could drive me to Seattle since he didn't think my truck could make it. Of course while offering me that he mentioned staying away from him yet again. Maybe it's not exactly negging but it's the best word I could think of for what he's doing. Ugh he's the first person to ever make me angry enough to want to hit something."
There was commotion when Alice came out of her vision. The dining table was flipped and Emmet was holding back a seething Rosalie who was shouting expletives at Carlisle.
"He's stalking her, Carlisle. How can you be so calm at your own son's disgusting behavior? You know he hasn't gotten permission to just hang around her room at night the same way he'll never ask permission to hear and judge our thoughts!"
"Rosalie please calm down, I'm sure there's a rational explanation."
Jasper sent out a strong wave of calm, "Carlisle, we can't sit by passively for this. Edward has incredible control over his thirst, he has proved it by sitting beside his singer and not immediately tearing into her, but he's still a danger to the girl." He glanced at Rosalie. "His stalking is gross, yes, and also dangerous. He's risking her life and exposure to prove something to you. He feels a lot of self pity and I'm sure this is some missguided attempt to prove he's not the monster he believes our kind to be. You need to talk him down to keep all of us safe. He can't be allowed to act freely on this Carlisle no matter how much you want to indulge."
The rest of the coven agreed with Jasper silently, and Carlisle reluctantly acquiesced. Jasper was right. Carlisle wanted to give Edward whatever he wants but this endangers the whole family and an innocent child.
"You're right Jasper, I'll talk to him. Alice, did you see any danger of exposure?"
"No, She is going to tell her friends that Edward was negging her but she's still keeping quiet about what happened with the car crash. Edward will be listening to them talk. There's a chance his attempts to befriend her will strengthen with this. It might just feed his stubbornness."
"Emmet, Jasper, and I will go get him. You three get our move ready."
As they rushed to the Swan residence Carlisle felt a pang of guilt. He wanted his firstborn to know the love and companionship the rest of his family did and it felt like they were taking that chance from him. But this was too dangerous and he knew it. Edward has never felt the pull of a mate, it's understandable that the pull of a singer could be confused for one after being alone for so long. If that was his son's intentions anyway, Carlisle didn't want to think about what his intentions might be if Edward knows full well he's only feeling the singer's pull. Edward would never do that.
They closed in and could hear what Edward was listening in on.
"You were wrong the first day Jess. Everyone was actually too good for him and I was the first person that was vulnerable enough to play his dumb game with apparently. He turned you and everyone else down probably because he didn't think he could isolate you like he could the new girl."
Jasper could feel the cacophony of emotions coming off Edward. Self loathing, disgust, anger, sadness. He wasn't paying any attention to his surroundings as he started to move towards the house. Jasper managed to get in front of him and knock him back hard into a tree. Emmet caught him and restrained him there.
"What are you doing let go of me! I wasn't going to do anything to her. I've tested my strength and I can resist my thirst!"
Edward please son, you need to listen to reason. I know it's hard to be alone but she is your singer not your mate. Her blood calls to you not her soul. I'm sorry son, we can't let you develop an obsession with the Swan child.
As Jasper's calm and Carlisle's words sunk in Edward sagged, all his fight sapped out of him. Emmet tentatively let go of him but kept a hand on his shoulder just in case. The conversation inside had moved from Edward onto much lighter topics and the boys were able to pull Edward back to the house where Alice had some plans laid out for what they could do next. None of the options involved Edward staying.
"Choose whatever you think is best." Edward was in no mood to vote on where he was being banished. He was a monster conflating bloodlust for love. He needed time to come back to himself and banish this monster within him. He barely listened to the mental pleas of his family to stay as he made his way to his room and turned on some classical music to attempt to drown them out. Wherever he went, at least Isabella could be safe from a monster like him.
