If I didn't love you chapter 2
Chuck followed Casey into the CIA building. They approached the front desk and had their fingers scanned and photos taken. They received their CIA badges and Chuck fumbled with his as he looked up to see Sarah coming down the stairs wearing her blue CIA suit. Her long legs accompanying the skirt as she walked towards them. Casey looked at him. "You can do this."
Chuck walked through security and met Sarah on the other side. As Sarah spoke. "Morning boys."
Chuck shook his head as he was sure she called them boys. "Good morning gentlemen." Sarah repeated. "Morning." Casey answered. Chuck just nodded. Sarah walked down the hall. "We are in meetings all morning then we are going to be in training for the next few weeks. Beckman wants us to train and work together to build our team."
Casey continued to talk to Sarah as Chuck was having a hard time focusing. By now if they were in LA. They probably be waking up maybe having sex or making breakfast after sex and making their way to Castle. Chuck sighed deeply as they turned the corner to see an intern holding a tray of coffees. They grabbed each of their coffees with their names on it and walked in. Beckman stood at the front with her secretary that Chuck waved to. He remembered the last time he was their getting his badge, he was a bit clumsy. She waved back. Sarah sat down and noticed that Chuck was a very sociable person. She smiled to herself then sipped her coffee.
"Good morning team."
"Good morning General." They all replied."
Casey and Chuck noticed that Beckman was struggling with what to say and they couldn't blame her. She had to pretend that they had not work together nor knew each other, other than by name for the last five years and now that they were in person, she had to see their faces as she had to lie. Beckman pulled down her suit jacket and looked at the team. "As you can see in front of you is a file that will explain what the reasons why this team was put together. Your missions will resume in a month after training and getting familiar with each other. Your missions will also rely on the expertise of Chuck, I mean Charles computer skills. Colonel Casey and Charles had been on an undercover mission for some time and were pulled to join this team and work with you Agent Walker. We will have your report from LA put-on hold for now till we have enough new intel that we can have you look into."
"Okay General." Sarah took a sip of her coffee.
Sarah raised her hand. Beckman looked up. "Yes, Agent Walker?"
"Can I inquire to what their undercover mission consisted of?
Beckman didn't plan on answering that question nor figured that it would be brought up. Beckman looked at Chuck and Casey for help. Chuck looked at her. It was his idea to go this route, so he felt he needed to say something. "Agent Walker, the Colonel and I were sent under cover to look into a Ring of black-market diamond smugglers but later found out that they were not only smuggling diamonds but smuggling microchips into those diamonds."
Sarah looked at him, intrigued with what he was saying.
"Were you successful?"
Chuck looked at her. "We were all able to shut down the Ring and the microchips were all recovered."
"Good. I always like when a mission is a successful one."
Chuck sat back. Casey leaned into him. "Way to make it sound real."
Chuck looked at him. "I can't lie to her even if I try."
Beckman flipped the pages of her binder. "Ok team. We will get back to the matters at hand. We will have the three of you head out to one of our newer facilities and train there without any disruptions. You will sleep and eat there and will only be in contact with a few of our staff. The training will then be used outside the facility where you three will return to full mission duty."
The three looked at their binders, then exited the meeting heading to the new facility. Chuck walked in and saw the training facility. He had bypassed this part of training the first time as he was pushed ahead and given his badge based on what he had. This time he had to do it without letting her know about the Intersect. He watched her walk the room and wondered if she still had the Intersect herself or was that suppressed as well.
Week two of training
Chuck sat in their room, with his feet resting on his desk as he stared down the two beds that he and Casey were using and Sarah who got the other bed in the next room. He looked over at Casey's bed, where it was made to the specific naval requirements and each morning Casey tossed a coin on it making sure that the coin would bounce back into his hand. Then he looked at his bed. The bed was made but, it wasn't a priority.
He knew he was purposely distracting himself just to waste time, so he didn't have to reread the manuals that he knew hadn't changed since the last time he read them. So, he grabbed one of the comic books he brought from LA. He flipped opened the comic to pick up where he left off. He finally finished and as he closed the comic, there she was. She stood there unaware of who she was standing in front of. It pained him not to kiss her or say something that he would say to his wife. To have one of their talks that ended up with them holding hands, kissing, or heading to their bedroom. It was worse than when they first met. Five years ago, she was a stranger that was sent to retrieve a file but ended up staying to protect him. Their conversations blossomed from there and they were comfortable to talk about anything. Now it just hurt.
"Hey Chuck, or do you prefer Charles?"
Chuck sat up. Just hearing her say his name, that hadn't changed. It was still the same tone, same sincere melodic voice of hers calling out his name forming from her lips. She waited for an answer. "Chuck is fine."
"Okay Chuck."
Chuck continued to put his feet down on the floor. "I was impressed with your skills today. It was almost as if you knew what was going to happen."
"Oh really?" Chuck thought that he had done a good job of not using the Intersect.
"Some of your moves, were." Sarah laughed.
"Like what?"
"Like some of mine, it was like I was fighting with myself?"
"No, sorry, I guess we both are using what works."
"Yeah, maybe your right." Sarah noticed the comic and picked it up."
"You like comics?"
"Yeah, always have."
"Me, not a fan. Never saw the need."
Chuck decided to change the subject cause no matter what he said it would bring back their memories.
"Are you enjoying your training?"
"It's okay, I like keeping busy. But honestly, I think that it is a waste of time. It is obvious that we would work well together, so doing this."
"They must have their reasons."
"I guess." Sarah got up. "Going to go have a shower at least I will get some hot water." Chuck stood up and watched her walk over to her side and grab a towel and a change of clothes. He hadn't been in their room when it was time to get ready for bed. He made sure either he was in bed before her, or he waited down the hall till her lights went out, then he came in. Now he was in the same room at the same time face to face with her. Her actions of getting ready to head to the bathroom were the same as when he watched her in the motel in Blackrock. He had to turn away. Sarah came walking towards him smiling then exited into the bathroom and shut the door. Casey came walking in and saw the look on Chuck's face.
"You, okay?"
Chuck made sure the door to the bathroom was closed. "No! Are you kidding me, I'm dying here? She came and sat down on my bed and commented on how well of a job I did with training today. And that the moves she saw me do were so like hers that she wondered at times if she was fighting with herself. And why not, she taught me those moves." Chuck sat down and ran his hands through his hair.
"Casey, I don't think that I am going to be able to do this."
"Well maybe you won't have too, much longer."
Chuck sat up. "I just spoke to Beckman, and they finished looking at Sarah's scans. As far as she was told it was a random scan but when you asked them to look deeper, they found out that you were right and that her memories were or are suppressed. Whatever Quinn used I'm thinking that it can be reversed, or she does it herself. If she is determined enough, she can force herself to remember."
"Then what?"
Just then Sarah came out drying her hair with her towel and really didn't care how she looked. Though she was clothed, she had no idea what it was doing to Chuck. Casey moved to block his view of Sarah's side. "I can't." He looked at Casey.
Chuck got up and left the room. Casey peaked over to see Sarah continuing to dry her hair unaware, then looked at the door. He got ready for bed wondering where Chuck had gone.
Chuck looked at his watch and knew he had to talk to someone. He grabbed the phone in the small cafeteria and dialed home.
"Hello?"
"Ellie?"
"Chuck," She heard it in his voice. The pain, the hurt, the I don't know what to do sound.
"It's not going the way you hoped. Has she remembered anything?"
"No, but even if she doesn't. Anything she says or does Ellie, it's still her, it's still my Sarah. The way she looks at me, to her she is just looking at someone she works with, but to me it's my wife looking at me and there is nothing I can do, except pretend that we are strangers."
"I'm so sorry Chuck. How are you keeping the outside world and the fact that it is 2012?"
"We are in training or fake training as far as Casey and I are concerned. And we are off campus in a small facility of 15 people or so, who all are in on it. We make sure that if there's something to watch it is from five years ago. Beckman got old news footages playing in the background and she's not interested in music or movies, so that's not hard to keep away from her. So, I don't know what else we can do to keep the outside world away from her."
"She is eventually going to find out, won't she?"
"Hopefully by then we will figure out how to get her memories back. Casey told me that her memories are just suppressed and not gone, so she could easily bring them back on her own or I figure out a way to reverse what he did."
"Where would you start?"
"I need to get a hold of whatever he used. Whether it was a program or flashcards, or what mom used on me."
"Otherwise, how are you doing? Your still able to see her every day, it's what you wanted."
"I know but."
"It's the little things." Ellie trying to help.
"More like a million things. I better get some sleep here. Thanks for listening."
"Chuck, hang in there. Hang onto the positives. You can see her, she safe with you and Casey. And yes, she doesn't know who you are, but Chuck, she didn't know you five years ago either and look how that turned out."
Chuck smiled.
"Your right El. Love ya."
"Love ya too baby brother. Say hi to Casey and Sarah, even if she doesn't know who I am."
"I will, say hi to Devon and Morgan if you see him."
"Don't worry he has already been here for several suppers. Mostly on pot roast night."
"Have fun with that. Bye sis."
"Bye Chuck."
Chuck headed back to their room and opened the door and saw the reflection of the hallway light shining on her face. He closed the door and blew her a kiss and whispered 'I love you and good night' like he had done every night before that.
End of training
Sarah headed down into their new gigs and saw Casey sitting alone. She sat down. "Can I help you Agent Walker?"
"What's going on with Chuck?"
"Why do you ask?"
"It's just something he said that makes me wonder if he is on board with this whole thing."
"He is more than on board with this, so that shouldn't be a concern of yours. He is, and will always be loyal to this team."
"With all due respect Colonel, I wasn't judging his loyalties, it wasn't something he said per say it's more of how he said it."
"So, what did he say?"
"He told me that we were able to connect."
"And?"
"And that's it."
Sarah looked at him. Casey knew exactly what it meant but he's thinking that maybe Chuck didn't realize that he had said it.
"Chuck tends to speak in riddles once in a while, so maybe that was it."
Sarah and Casey hear a voice. "Excuse me I brought you your coffees. And that General Beckman wants to see you at the top of the hour."
"Thanks Ms. Williams."
The intern walked back out. Her coffee trips were like clockwork, and she knew exactly what each person on the team liked in their coffees. Sarah slid the sleeve of her coffee cup up covering the label and carried it to the briefing room but noticed Casey slipping an envelope into his drawer and locking it on his way out.
Ms. Williams ran after Sarah with her morning coffee, and she couldn't say no to her, so she took it and headed down the stairs towards her desk when she was stopped at the door. "Agent Walker we have an envelope for you."
"For me?"
"It was delivered a few weeks ago but we were told to keep it here till you came back. Would you like to take it now?"
"Sure."
Sarah signed for it and looked it over only seeing her name on it and in the top left corner was the name Omaha. She walked back to her desk and placed the envelope on top of the other files she had been looking at. She sat down and grabbed her cup and noticed the sticker on it. She slid the sleeve down and saw her order and glanced at the date. "I guess someone typed the wrong date on this cup. 2012 that's funny."
