Chapter 5
Sarah cleaned up; it was the least she could do for him. Chuck opened a bottle of wine that he had from the party and padded the floor to where he now sat. Sarah lowered herself and met his lips then grabbed the other glass of wine. "So, tell me about you being an architect and…."
"And how I ended up being a spy? You know that part about me being a spy but being an architect, it was a childhood dream that I did not tell many people. It only came out when I was going through my training at the FARM, and they did a test on me that would determine what kind of spy I would be and where my strengths would lead me. That's when they found out that I had an interest in architecture, so my cover at the beginning were associated with art heists, gathering intel from rich mansions, overriding their security systems etc. I thought about leaving the spy life a few times after seeing what was out there. And having the opportunity to sit in an office, designing places that I wished that I could have enjoyed at some point in my life." Sarah took a drink.
"But you saw the world?"
"I did." A Sarah took another sip of wine. "I have lots of stamps on my passport, but I never got to enjoy the places I did end up in. So, when I decided to go back to Butte, I wanted it to be that place, where no one knew me, and no one would expect anything from me."
"And now?"
Sarah slid her fingers into Chucks. "It's good to be back here but I don't know if this is what I want to do anymore."
Chuck looked at her as he took a sip and was about to say something when his cell rang. Chuck looked at the phone. "It's Ellie."
"Go take it." Sarah whispered.
Chuck got up. "Hey Ell?" He walked into the kitchen. Sarah got up and opened the patio door and walked out looking out towards the sky and the memories that came with being there. She placed her glass down and leaned against the pony wall facing the apartment. She could still hear Chuck talking and laughing, then it got quiet then he walked through the door. "She had to go. She says hi." As he out his phone into his pocket.
"You told her that I was here?"
"No, she figured that I would be in talking to you sometime today."
"So how are they?"
"Enjoying the life, I never thought that Ellie would ever move. I figured we'd grow old here and watch our grand kids play together. You know that kind of stuff."
Chuck stood beside Sarah and leaned against the pony wall facing the apartment. He grabbed Sarah's hand and held it. "I'm glad you're here."
Sarah leaned her head on his shoulder and welcomed the setting sun.
Next Day
Sarah tried to avoid coming out to see Morgan, but Morgan somehow figured out that she was there. Chuck tried to keep him from going to his room but, Sarah gave in and walked out. Chuck looked at her and shrugged his shoulders. Morgan leaned in for a hug and grinned. "It's so good to see you."
"Good to see you too Morgan."
"How long are you here for?"
"Just a few days, then I need to get back."
"And Chuck is going back with you?" Morgan not seeing the look on Sarah's face, but Chuck did.
"Hey buddy, do you have everything, you don't want to miss your flight."
"Right." Morgan looked around the room. "Lots of memories Chuck."
"Yes Buddy."
Morgan turned around and walked to the door. "You will call right?"
"I will and we will continue to have our Thursday Halo game."
"Can't wait."
"Bye, Sarah. Good to see you."
"All the best Morgan."
Chuck walked Morgan out to the street and said his goodbye and came back in as Sarah stood in the doorway. Chuck walked back in and into her arms. "Another one gone."
Sarah held him close.
"Chuck, tomorrow let's do something that we haven't done."
Chuck stood straight. "Like what?"
"Santa Monica Pier."
"Sounds like fun. We can head out there after I drop those boxes off at Castle."
Chuck pointed to a pile of boxes that were near the front door.
"What's in here?" As Sarah walked over to them opening them.
"Surveillance stuff, some gadgets that I had left here and some things that Casey had given me that I don't need now."
Sarah looked at the items. She brought out a pair of night goggles.
"Are you sure you wouldn't want to keep these?"
Chuck walked over to her. He looked at her and took them out of her hand and kissed her. "Okay if you insist."
Castle
Chuck entered through the side door. Sarah walked the room with all its familiarities and watched as Chuck carried the boxes to the back.
"So, how does it feel to be back?"
"It's like I have never left. What are they going to do with Castle?"
"I think they are leaving it here till…"
"Till what Chuck?"
Chuck started to walk away. "Till what Chuck?"
"I'm not going to say it cause then you will get upset and we will be back to where we were weeks ago. They won't stop asking us."
Sarah looked at him. He was right, if there was the chance that they were considering coming back Beckman would be asking every chance she got.
Chuck excused himself and finished putting the items back as Sarah continued to look around. Chuck looked at his watch and knew if they didn't get out of there, they would hit noon traffic to Santa Monica. Chuck called out to Sarah and heard nothing. He rounded the back and saw her staring at one of the holding cells. "Hey?"
Sarah turned. "Hey?"
"What are you looking at?"
Chuck walked up to her and placed a kiss on her shoulder. "Just thinking of all the what ifs."
"Like what?"
Sarah turned to face him. "If we made different choices, did what we wanted to do without any repercussions what's so ever. Had the freedom to express how we felt."
Chuck sighed. "Well, I guess that would have been from the start then?"
"Exactly."
Sarah grabbed his hand. "I tried to keep us just us, handler and asset but you didn't make it easy."
Chuck laughed. "Why are you laughing?"
Chuck looked at her. "Ellie and Devon asked me one time how I kept us so fresh – so I told them that we pretended like we're not really dating, so it forced me to win you over and over again."
"Oh really? And now?"
Chuck moved closer and dragged his fingers up her arm. "It was a challenge I didn't want to lose, I didn't want to lose you, even if I couldn't be with you."
Sarah leaned in and kissed his lips. "Do we have time?"
"Time for what?" Chuck being Chuck.
"Something that I always wanted to do with you and now I can."
She grabbed his arm and forcefully walked down the hall to another cell that had a cot in it and pushed Chuck inside. Chuck fell onto the cushion with his back pressed hard into the material. Sarah closed the door and looked at Chuck trying to get up. Sarah started unbuttoning her shirt. Chuck looked up at her. "Don't tell me that you didn't have any thoughts about you and me inside Castle?"
Chuck fumbling his words and his thoughts." Well, actually there might have been a few times."
Sarah dropped her shirt and seductively crawled onto Chuck's lap and straddled him. She waited till he sat up and slipped his shirt off him, then kissed him hard. Sarah fell back into his arms as he rolled them making Sarah lie on her back. Chuck softly kissed her. Chuck and Sarah finally made another dream come true.
Chuck rolled onto his back as Sarah leaned over trying to grab her bra and shirt. Chuck leaned onto his side and kissed her bare back. Sarah laid back with her shirt covering her. Chuck kissed her lips. "That was, wow."
Sarah smiling back at him. "Not bad Bartowski."
Chuck grinned. "You weren't bad either."
Sarah pulled him closer. "Don't you want to go to Santa Monica?" As Chuck looked down at her.
"We will." As Sarah pulled him into a kiss.
Later that day – Santa Monica Pier
They parked and grabbed a bite to eat, as they were famished after their time in Castle. They held hands as they stepped onto the wharf looking out at the pier and the ocean. "You can't see this in Montana." Chuck walked over to the railing leaning over as the water crashed into the pier. Sarah slid her arms into his and leaned into him. "No, you can't." As she looked at Chuck and sighed, she forced a smile as he looked up at her. They stared out at the water till the sounds made them turn around.
Chuck made Sarah forget her woes and gave her the time of her life.
LAX
Chuck held Sarah close as the final boarding announcement came over the intercom. Sarah wiped the tears from her face with the back of her hand as Chuck made it less obvious that a tear got lose. Sarah kissed him. "The last three days have been." He lifted her chin gracefully.
"And they will be again. I just need to finish up here." He kissed her once more then watched her walk through the gate then disappeared.
Chuck parked and headed inside the apartment and grabbed a beer and looked to see what there was to eat. Besides a half container of cheese puffs, he was out of food. He ordered a large Spyro and sat staring at the empty walls. He knew that Sarah would be arriving in Butte, and he anticipated her call.
Chuck grabbed his phone and her voice filled that ache he had. Though he wished that she were there in his arms, talking to her was enough for now. They talked for an hour then they said their goodbyes. This was their routine for the next few weeks as Chuck finally got word that the apartment was sold. Chuck watched as some CIA officials were over next door. Removing the rest of Casey's security system, allowing his apartment to be sold too. Chuck followed the CIA's team to the back as they finished up and he loaded Devon's and Ellie's car with the few items he chose to keep. The mattress and a few other pieces of furniture he left for Lester and Jeff to pick up when they were done work.
Chuck walked the apartment and took one last look at the last decade that he had spent there and how one night it all changed when he met an Agent named Sarah Walker. He grabbed the Tron poster and left the keys on the kitchen counter and headed to the door. He flipped the lights off for the last time and closed the door.
LA was Chuck's past as he headed down I-15 to his future. He took one last look in the mirror as the sun was just coming up over the horizon. He wanted to be in Butte as soon as he could, but he would have to take a few naps or even have a lot of coffee to make that happen. He made good time through Nevada and headed into Utah and figured that it was worth driving the rest of the way. He arrived in Butte as the sun was going down and Sarah would be done work. So, he would head to the house. He avoided her calls since he left Salt Lake City which made his speedometer exceed the speed limit a few times.
He drove down the main street and turned onto her street and parked in the back. He did not have the strength to unpack he just wanted to see her face. Sarah walked into the kitchen seeing lights in the back. Her curiosity got the best of her and headed to the back door and turned on the back yard lights. Her eyes were deceiving her, so she thought, so she stepped out onto the deck to take a better look. Chuck walked out in front of the car and looked up towards the house. Sarah walked to the edge of the stairs as Chuck reached the bottom step. "I'm home."
Chuck met her lips and kissed her then held her close. Sarah did not ask him the questions she had, she just walked inside and made him something to eat. He showered then slipped into their bed.
The next morning, Sarah was so happy that it was Sunday and that she did not have to rush off and go to work. She was not upset that they hadn't made love yet. But she had to smile remembering Chuck trying to stay awake eating his sandwich. She let him sleep as she loved having his arms wrapped around her and that he was home. He came home.
