A/N I don't own Chuck. Here is another chapter, this one will probably be short but we will see how it goes. Thanks to nevr correcting my mistakes once again.
Chapter. 8
The team stood in front of Casey's tv waiting for General Beckman to join them. Casey was in his green Buy More shirt and brown pants. Chuck was in his Buy More nerd herd short sleeve shirt and black pants. Chuck was having trouble trying not to stare at Sarah in her Wienerlicious outfit. She always looked stunning in that outfit was on his mind. Luckily for him, Beckman chose that that time to show up on the screen.
"Good afternoon team. Mr. Bartowski, I have spent the last few days speaking to the President about you and this operation. It has been decided that with your computer skills, you will be hired as a field analyst and seeing as you are now a Stanford graduate, we are working on a cover for the team. Since we don't know how the Intersect works and what will and won't trigger a flash, that the team will be based out of Burbank, so you will stay with your family. I must stress that we will keep this from them for the time being, unless any of you could think of a reason not to." her voice was stern when she mentioned the last part. "There won't be any threat of a bunker or termination order issued, this was a direct order from the President."
Chuck was glad to be staying home. He was relived at the President was on his side. Sarah was glad Chuck was not going to be treated as an asset or be burned like one. Casey just grunted.
"Thank you General I am glad to be of service to my country. I would like to make a suggestion on a cover for the team, if I may?" Everyone on the call was surprised by his question, except for Sarah. He has told her he had an idea for the cover, but he never elaborated his plan. She was a little shocked that there was no nervousness in his voice or posture, he just stared Beckman straight in the eyes.
"Very well, Mr. Bartowski, let's hear see what you have." They all could hear the challenge in her tone.
"Ok, first I got to ask Sarah what she studied at Harvard?" Her eyes widened when she heard his question. She was not expecting Chuck to know that about her, but her mind was quick and she rationalized that he saw how Graham had recruited her and knew where she was placed for school.
She found her voice and answered. "I studied and got business and linguistics." She saw Chuck give her one of his patented smiles she had come to enjoy seeing.
"Well, that's goes great with my idea. I may be new to the spy world, but I was thinking of a cover name for myself and I was thinking Charles Carmichael. That being said, I was thinking a technology and cyber/security company. With my computer skills, Casey's military experience and Sarah's business credentials, we could open up the company together, so no one will ask questions as to why a woman like Sarah drives a Porsche or stays in upscale hotel while working selling corndogs. Everyone can tell Casey is former military. Granted it will probably take a month or two to get everything set up and while we wait, we all could work at the Buy More. I say the government purchases the Wienerlicious seeing that there is an old bunker underneath the plaza." Chuck took a generous sip form the glass of water in front of him on the table. Everyone else was shocked into silence. The fact that he came up with this cover in a few days was mind blowing to them. They were so lost in thought that Chuck knocked them back from their contemplation by clearing his throat and continuing his idea.
"We can tell everyone that Sarah's last job set her up with a great severance package and Casey will use his Gi bill to get a loan to start the business and I could tell everyone I used some of my settlement money from Stanford for my part of the share. With this, we will be able to come and go as we please. If we have any missions, we can just say it's a business trip." General Beckman was trying to hide her shock the best she could, but Chuck had worked for her for years and he could tell by the slight widening of her eyes.
Casey grunted; it was the grunt that said good job. His respect for Bartowski went up another notch. Chuck looked in to Sarah's cerulean eyes; he could see respect and a little bit of awe and thank you. Chuck always knew how much she hated working in the food industry. With his plan, no more smelling like grease and burnt corn dogs, no more teens coming in trying to stare up or down her clothes. Beckman broke the silence.
"That's a very well thought out plan. It has merit. As you said it will take time to set up and no one will question your covers. I like it, so we will get started on acquiring the Wienerlicious. For the time being you will all be working out of the Buy More. Major, you will stay on as a green shirt and Agent Walker, you will be joining Mr. Bartowski at the Nerd Herd. This way, you will stay with him under the guise of training when he goes out on service calls." No one had any complaints about their orders. Sarah was actually looking forward to spending more time with the enigma that is one Chuck Bartowski. "Do you have anything else to add, Mr. Bartowski?" Now everyone was thrown for a loop here was Beckman showing him respect so early on; he was not expecting that at all. He expected it would take months before that would happen. Chuck cleared his throat once more to hide his shock.
"Actually, General, I would like to read my sister and her boyfriend into the mission eventually. I'm not saying read them in today, do your background checks and all that, but I think it would be beneficial to have both of them as doctors. For one, we don't know if the Intersect will have any adverse effects on me and having a surgeon on call would be a bonus if anyone was hurt and needed help right away," he spoke calmly, his voice never wavering. The rest of the room was in deep thought. Beckman and Casey could see having medical available could be strategically great from a mission perspective. Sarah was thinking Chuck just didn't want to lie to his sister; she knew they were close. Ellie raised him and they never kept secrets from one another. They all thought about the negative, more people would know about the Intersect.
"Ok, Mr. Bartowski, I will think on what you said and I'll let you know when, and if, we come to a decision about your sister and her boyfriend." Chuck nodded his acceptance, knowing most likely than not it would not be approved at this time.
"Thank you, Ma'am"
"Ok team, you will be on standby unless Mr. Bartowski flashes on something. I have a lot of work to do, so that is all." The screen went black. Chuck looked at his partners. Casey grunted getting Chuck's attention.
"Good work today, Bartowski." Chuck was a little taken aback by Casey's acknowledgment. "Thanks, Casey"
"Well, moron, it looks like you got Walker out of the Wienerlicious, but now she stuck with you and the geeks and whatever you call Patel and Barnes."
"It's nerds," both Chuck and Sarah said at the same time. They both looked at each other and smiled. Casey gave a disgusted grunt. "Try to keep your peanut butter out of Walker's chocolate, at least when I am around."
The other two people in the room blushed, but did not give any other response as they both headed out the door into the courtyard. Chuck wanted to explain to Sarah that he wasn't fishing for information about her. Granted he already knows her better than anyone else. "Sarah, I want to apologize for putting you on the spot about college."
"It's fine, Chuck, I figured you knew I went to Harvard when you looked through Graham's files and his recruitment methods." Sarah mind was racing. She was nervous. She was about to share something with him that she never told anyone else. "As you probably saw, I was not really given a choice, it was either join the CIA or jail. Graham used my father as leverage for me to join. My father was, is, a con man. He was arrested in my senior year. Graham said if I joined him, that he would keep my father safe. All I knew my whole life was how to con; it was like I was already training to be an agent. Now that Graham is gone, he can no longer use my father against me." Chuck looked into her eyes; the sadness and guilt showing through. He knew she feared his reaction to her past. He was thankful she had started to trust him early on. Sarah was numb; she never shared so much with someone, ever. There was something about this man that just screamed that she should and could trust him with anything.
"Sarah," he said as he lifted her chin to look him in the eye to try to convey his thoughts just by looking at her. "Sarah, I told you before I would be your personal baggage handler if you would let me and I meant that. I appreciate that you felt safe sharing that with me. You do not have to say any more about your past right now. Trust me, I want to know all about you, but only when you're ready to share it with me. Just so you know, nothing in your past or future will make me think less of you or change my opinion that I think you are a great person I want get to know more of."
Sarah was touched. Here was a man that she shared something personal with and he wasn't digging for more. If she shared this with Bryce or any other agent, they would have used it against her in some way or fashion, but apparently Chuck would keep blowing away her expectations of him. She felt something within her she never felt before; she didn't have a name for it, but she knew it had something to do with Chuck. She could not believe such a man existed. She gave him a big smile, wiping away her unshed tears with the back of her hand. "Thanks, Chuck."
He gave her a smile of his own. "Don't thank me yet you're going to be stuck working by Jeff and Lester. I don't mind if you kick their ass, but just don't kill them," he joked with her, making her laugh
"Just keep them away from me and I won't be tempted to make them disappear."
"Don't worry, I will and we won't be working at the Buy More for long. I get the feeling Beckman will get everything ready shortly." Sarah nodded her head in agreement as Chuck walked her to her car once more. They were making a habit of this. Her mind was in deep thought as they approached her Porsche. That date he asked her on was sounding more appealing by the moment. As they reached her car, her mind had one answer, it was yes. Once in her car, she rolled down her window, looking directly into his brown eyes. There was a hint of gold in them that made her feel safe and that he was peering into her soul.
"Chuck, about that date you asked me on, how about next weekend?" Her face broke out into a wide grin, seeing his startled response. It took him a moment to get over his shock.
"Really... I mean yes, that sounds great! I can't wait till next weekend. I'll see you tomorrow. I'm guessing you're going to quit the Wienerlicious and come apply at the Buy More."
"Yup, I'll see you tomorrow." She gave him a wink as she drove off.
Chuck somehow made it back to his room without even noticing. As he laid on his bed, his mind was spinning. Sarah Walker agreed to go out on a real date with him. She shared part of her past with him without him pushing her to share. She actually trusted him with her past and like a sucker punch in the gut. He was filed with guilt. She shared something personal with him and yet he was keeping a big secret from her. He knew he needed to tell her the whole truth before anything serious happens between them. Chuck fell into an uneasy sleep this night while across town Sarah slept with another smile on her face.
A/N: I wanted to get this out while it's still fresh in my mind. So, what do Ya'll think? Who doesn't like Sarah in a Nerd Herd uniform? Having the government buy the Wienerlicious and turning it into an office for the team's new business seems like a good choice. I mean, I don't think a new company just starting out would able to fill up a multi-floor office space and having Castle under helps hide the spy stuff. I know Carmichael Industries never went above ground due to Sarah losing her memory; this is just my way of starting it out.
So, tell me what you all think. Any feedback would help. If anyone wants to help bounce ideas back and forth, maybe that will help me get chapters out faster, but it is not a guarantee it will. Work and life seem to get in the way a lot of the time.
