Author's Note:
A couple of things, based on reviews I got on my last chapter. So in the last chapter I said that Kuroko and Touma were in middle school. This is my bad, I completely blanked and forgot that they are in high school. So everyone is in high school (I will rewrite the chapter on a later date). Another thing is someone wondering, Why are Touma's parents in the bank? Didn't they just send him to Academy City. The answer to that is because they were searching for a school. They didn't know if Academy City is where he should go (because it might be too expensive). I thought that I made that clear in my writing, but if I didn't, I'm sorry. For those who are confused by the timeline, just watch the show and you will see a lot of the references to where we are at this point. Also, I'm not a good author, so please just enjoy the story and try not to pester about timeline inconsistencies. Keep up the reviews, I enjoy reading them.
….
Kamijou Touma woke up in a hospital bed, not sure how he had got there. In fact, he didn't remember anything. He looked around the room and saw a frog-faced doctor approaching him.
"Excuse me, could you tell me why I am here?"
The doctor looked at him and sighed.
"He really doesn't remember anything at all…"
"Well you were involved in an incident last, that resulted in you completely losing your past memories."
Touma's eyes widened, he looked down.
"E-Everything?!"
"W-Well… when will I get them back?" Touma stuttered, a glimmer of hope in his eyes.
The Doctor knew that he had to break the news to him sometime, so with a sigh he spoke.
"We fear that you may never get them back…"
As freaked out as Touma was, he couldn't really be sad. There was nothing and nobody for him to cry about, there were just blank memories. The doctor left the room to give Touma some privacy, and went to go talk with the nun that had brought the boy into the hospital.
…
Touma's door opened up and a nun-looking girl rushed in. He stared at her in confusion, and a look of sadness appeared on her face.
"T-Touma, do you remember me?"
Touma did not remember her at all, "Uh, are you sure that you don't have the wrong room?"
"Touma, you saved me with your Imagine Breaker, your right hand that can undo magic!"
Touma didn't remember anything at all, but he saw the tears brimming her eyes.
"So… what's your name?"
"It's… Index" She said, in between sobs.
"Well, Index, all I have to do is touch my head and it will undo the magic that made me forget everything."
A glimmer of hope sparkled in her eyes, "R-Really."
"For sure!" With that he touched his right hand to his head.
He widened his eyes and put on a smile, "Ah, Index! I can't believe that I didn't remember before!"
Index's eyes widened in happiness, the doctor had told her that his memories were permanently gone.
"Guess there was nothing to worry about…"
She rushed forward and gave him a hug, "Are you ready to go back to the dorm, Touma?"
"I live in a dorm?! She lived with me?!" These were Touma's thoughts, but instead he smiled and said, "Sure, let's go."
….
Meanwhile, at the Tokiwadai dorms, a certain teleporter was getting ready for a special lunch with someone. She had a smile on her face ever since she had woken up. Her roommate had noticed it too.
"What's up with Kuroko? I've never seen her this happy."
As Kuroko was doing her hair, Misaka questioned her.
"So what are you doing today?"
"O-Oh, I just have lunch with someone."
Kuroko's nervous tone raised red flags for Misaka. Kuroko was always confident and never second guessed herself.
"Do you mind me asking who?"
"J-Just an old friend."
Kuroko stepped out in a cute t-shirt and a skirt with flowers on it, she did a twirl, then looked at Misaka seriously.
"Do I look good?"
Misaka's eyes widened. Kuroko never cared about her appearance, clearly, whoever she was seeing, she cared about a lot.
"Y-Yes."
With a smile on her face, Kuroko left the dorms. Little did she know, Misaka was trailing her, curious of who Kuroko was going to see.
….
Kamijou Touma had finally gotten back to his dorm. He looked out the window to see the sun setting. Index had been dragging him around to places all day. Once they had left the hospital, it was lunch time, so she took him to a burger place. Then she took him shopping until dinner time. After dinner they went to an arcade, until the speakers announced that it was time for all students to go home.
He looked around his apartment, it looked small to him. He had an empty fridge, which he could assume was from his hungry roommate. He looked in his living room and only saw one bed. His eyes widened.
"Do she and I share one bed?!"
He then looked in the bathroom and saw a pillow and blanket, in the bathtub.
"Ah, this must be where I sleep."
While inspecting his house, he realized just how hard life was going to be without his memories. He didn't know where he went to school, he didn't know the Academy City layout, he didn't even know who his parents were. He signed, thinking that maybe he should come clean, but then he remembered the look on the girl's face when he said he didn't remember her.
"It can't hurt to try this lifestyle…"
As he laid on the uncomfortable bathtub, he smiled and made a promise to himself.
"I may not remember who I was, but I will try my best to live up to who I used to be…"
….
Misaka entered her dorm room to see her roommate, face down on her bed, crying. She knew this was coming, because she had followed her. Kuroko had sat at a cafe in the plaza for over three hours, and eventually had walked home with her head down. Misaka walked over to the side of her roommate's bed.
"Kuroko, are you okay?"
Kuroko looked up, tears in her eyes.
"I-It's fine, just let me have some time… to get my emotions in check…"
"W-What happened?"
There was silence.
"H-He didn't show up…" She whimpered.
"Who…"
"I can't say, you'll go beat him up."
She had Misaka there. Kuroko was one of the most important people in Misaka's life and was an amazing best friend. Anyone who made her cry was going to have to deal with Misaka. As much as she wanted to comfort her friend, she had no idea what to say.
"Is there anything that I can do to help you?"
"Just… give me some time to myself…"
With that, she laid back down on the bed and buried her face in her pillow, still crying. It hurt Misaka to see her friend like this. If she ever met this boy, she would have to have a conversation with him.
…
The next day, Kamijou Touma was ordering a drink from a vending machine when, all of a sudden, it stopped working and ate his bill. He was busy venting his anger to the machine when all of sudden, Misaka walked up to him.
"Move, idiot, I need to quench my thirst."
He looked at her, "Uh, are you talking to me?"
"I don't see another idiot nearby."
Touma was extremely curious how he knew this girl, and why she kept calling him an idiot. He decided to ask some questions, and see if he could find out her relation to him.
"So… what's your name?"
She looked at him in annoyance.
"I'm not in the mood for teasing, I'm extremely thirsty."
"Ah, that machine will eat your bill, it ate mine."
Misaka smiled, "It already ate mine and it's still paying it off."
With that, she kicked the side of the machine and tons of drinks came out of the dispenser. Touma's eyes widened.
"A-Are you stealing those?!"
She smiled, "Don't be silly, those are for you."
"I don't want them!"
"Come on, it's to make up for your stolen bill."
Touma hesitated for a second, but eventually accepted because this girl's logic made sense. After taking some time to stack the cans at a bench nearby, they sat down and enjoyed a drink. Through conversation, Touma found out that the girl's name was Misaka and that they were… rivals? The way the girl talked made it seem like they had fought many times before, which made no sense to Touma. He was about to ask more questions when the girl spoke.
"Oh no, here comes Kuroko, she must have gotten the alarm from the machine."
Kuroko approached her troublesome roommate who appeared to be sitting with a boy. She had expected that Misaka was the one who had done it, since the alarm came from the vending machine that she was constantly beating up for taking money from her. What she wasn't expecting was who she was sitting with. Her eyes widened as she approached her sister… and Kamijou Touma.
….
"H-Hey, Misaka, who's that you are with." She said with an angry look on her face.
"Oh, it just some idiot-"
"I'm Kamijou Touma, nice to meet you. I know that all these cans look bad, but I actually paid for all of them. The machine just ate my bill."
Kuroko was fighting the urge to punch him.
"This is his strategy?! Pretending not to know me, instead of apologizing!"
"You are such a coward…" She muttered to herself.
"Excuse me?"
"Oh, nothing, I have to get back to Judgement. Misaka, you can't keep robbing this vending machine."
Misaka had a smirk on her face, "I'm not stopping until I'm fully paid back.
With a smile Kuroko started to walk away, and Touma and Misaka continued their conversation. As Kuroko walked away, she realized that her heart was beating fast and tears were brimming her eyes. Yesterday when he had ditched her it had been awful, but despite being sad, she was more disappointed. She had genuinely wanted to spend time with him. She put her hand on her heart and looked back at him. Then she continued her walk back to judgement.
"Why do I care so much about him…"
…
Kamijou Touma was on his way home after talking with Misaka. He had successfully learned a decent amount of his past from dropping discret questions during their conversation. As he was walking home, he tripped over a curb and it sent his cans scattering all across the concrete. As he was picking them up, he saw another hand helping him. He looked up to see Misaka's friend from earlier. She handed him a can, but when he looked her in the face, he saw tears in her eyes. He opened his mouth to speak but she spoke first.
"W-Why… why didn't you show up…?"
