La Mort de Perséphone

It was somewhere in the early morning, the birds chirped within the lush green trees that decorated the town of La Verde. It was cold as the rays of golden light peeked through the mountains.

At the top of the hill that had various houses leading to the top, still part of the town, was a big white house. By its rooftop, a woman sat gazing as the sun slowly rise.

It was relaxing for her.

Her hair fell down in a mixture of curls and waves that seemed to look like dark chocolate as it ended right on her knees. It was cold in the morning but she didn't mind since she wore a white "vintage" nightgown which complemented her tan skin. It wasn't entirely vintage since she just bought a bunch of 'em on Etsy about a month ago. Her puffy, double eyelid almond-shaped dark eyes watched the sunset as her cheeks stung from crying earlier—she needed to calm down.

Everything was silent until her phone rang. Sighing, the woman reached into her pocket and answered the call without bothering to look at the ID Caller. "What?" She hissed, her eyes narrowing.

It was too early to talk to people.

"Where the hell are you, Persephone?" The Caller's on the other end of the line asked. "I figured you went out, but your car is still here."

Persephone crossed her legs underneath her white cotton clothes. "I'm on the roof," She answered. "You should see the sunset. It's really peaceful here. All zen and shit."

"Alright, I'm coming up there." The voice chirped.

"Oh, and Maria?" Persephone says, calling the person's name to get their attention. "Bring some snacks, will ya?"

It was silent.

Then the familiar sound of the call ending had Persephone's eyes rolling. "Could've just said no," She muttered before a yawn escaped her lips.

Not five minutes later, the faint smell of bacon reached her nose. Which triggered the growls of her stomach. Persephone ignored it, eyes still on the scenery on top of her house. With the rest of the town underneath her, rivers that on the far corner and the woods behind her provided such a pretty view.

Moments like this made Persephone felt as if she was on top of the world.

As if she was a god.

The sound of footsteps climbing the metal ladder reached her ears as it grew closer. As she turned, a woman appeared.

Her hair was straight and black that most had envied, styled in a bob cut. Dark eyes, same as Persephone's. Pale skin hidden underneath a pair of pyjamas and a grey sweater. To everyone around them, the two looked the same. As if they were twins, like the zodiac Gemini, they both looked eerily alike and yet different at the same time.

It was uncanny.

People's confusion often amused the two.

"Why the hell do you have a backpack?" Persephone pointed out, head tilted and brows raised.

"Obviously so we can both eat on the rooftop, dumbass." Maria says as she prepared the meals.

"Aww! Thanks." The brunette smiles which prompted the other girl to flip her off.

Persephone merely laughs.

The two ate in silence as the sun finally peeks through, the sky had turned a gradient of pinks and purple, but when Persephone turned to look behind her, the sky was still a dark shade of blue. She smiles and chomps back on her bacon and eggs.

After being full, with coffee in hand, the brunette asked. "So, when are you leaving?" Maria turned to give her a raised brow.

"Not that I'm trying to get rid of you! Don't take it the wrong way," Persephone laughed as she corrected herself. "But what about your house? Won't anyone be there to take care of the dogs?"

"It's alright," Maria answered, a soft smile on her face as she looks away. "My girlfriend is there to keep them company."

When she turns to look at Persephone, Maria sees a shit-eating grin on her face. "Speaking of the lovely lady, how have the two of you been?" The brunette asked. "Great, I hope?"

"Oh, we're doing great!" Maria answered, her voice going up a decibel. "We'll visit her parents by the end of the month. Her parents and I get along so well and they already treat me like their daughter too!"

Persephone nods her head in approval.

"Good to know, as long as my sister is being treated nicely." Persephone says but stopped upon the look on Luna's face.

"Aw! You really care about me, Sephie!" Maria smiles, looking so happy.

Persephone rolls her eyes with a smile on her face. "Yeah, yeah whatever you son of a bitch."

"Hey we have the same mother!"

With a laugh, she answered. "On this day, we don't."

The two looked at each other dead in the eyes in silence. It wasn't long before one of them cracks up and laughs. Moments like this was what Persephone cherished the most.

"Also, could you like finish your long furby?" Maria asked. "The thing gave me a heart attack when I saw it on your living room."

"I am in the process of making that furby ascend," Persephone answered, pridefully. "Unbound by the feeble matters of their flesh and weaknesses! Once that is done they will be able to dominate the world–"

"And burn it to ash, yeah, yeah." Maria cuts her off, finishing her sentence. "What's gonna be the name of your... um... spawn."

"I shall name that furby..." Persephone trails off. With a voice so soft as if she was afraid her creation would shatter, she says, "...Butter Milk."

Maria laughs again, earning a light smack from Persephone. "What? You dare make fun of my creation?"

Maria says nothing as her laughter dies down, but Persephone didn't care. She already knew her answer, so she flipped off her sibling.

"Earlier, when I got here, I noticed you were crying." Luna's voice was solemn and laced with worry, any hints of laughter gone.

Her curly hair bounced as Persephone nodded her head.

"Yeah, I was just reading a fanfic. It was angst. An angsty boi," She answered. "It was on a cliff-hanger too! Like the last words were "soulmates aren't always meant to be together" like fuck!" Her fist slams down on the roof, making Maria jump at the loud thud that occurred from her sibling.

"Like, I'm sorry?! Ma'am, Sir, I am... I am... I need to see what happens next! And it's so annoying because the smut is good! Like hell yeah, spice and sweet, right? The angst? Made me fucking feel things I haven't felt in a long ass time." Persephone rants, making wild gestures here and there as she did so. "But when was it last updated? May of Twenty Fifteen."

Persephone saw Maria cringed. "Exactly my reaction! Now imagine being emotionally invested on said fanfic."

"Oh, that hurts," Was the short haired girl's response. "Encountered that many times too, like shit, it was a roller coaster ride."

Maria asked. "So, what fandom was it?"

"It's..."

Persephone turns to look at her and was about to speak when the answer dies in her throat. Red dusts her cheeks in embarrassment.

She stutters, avoiding the gaze of her sister as she tried to find a suitable answer.

"Transformers?" Maria asked and Persephone's silence was loud and clear.

"Is it an Optimus Prime fanfiction?" At those words Persephone nods.

"Yeah... um yeah, p-pretty much." She answered, flustered. "Oh, speaking of, I rarely see any Megatron fanfics too, like come on! Give my favourite warlord some love too!"

Maria chuckled. "I'm sure there's plenty."

"You wouldn't understand! Most stories of Transformers is hidden, like a treasure buried underneath, you know? Other fandoms got it easy because theirs can mostly be found almost anywhere... at least from what I see."

"Keep looking, I'm sure you'll find it." Maria says as she packs the utensils they used back in the backpack. "I'll be heading down, to clean the dishes. See ya inside, hoe."

With that, Persephone watched as Maria disappeared as well as the familiar footsteps on the metal ladder. The sound of a door being shut closed had the brunette turning back on the horizon, where the sun was almost showing half of its body.

It wasn't so dark anymore, but it wasn't too bright either. A burp escaped her lips and she didn't bother to cover it seeing as she was alone again.

Her reddish, heart-shaped lips turned into a frown as her eyes fluttered close. How long had she been a fan of Transformers? Persephone can't remember but she knew at some point she had stopped. The fandom seemed dormant, seeing as it wasn't as loud as it was back in it's glory days.

What a shame, really.

Like many, she too had set it aside and invested herself in other active fandoms.

If she were able to meet her younger self, her younger self would curse her for not becoming a mechanic. Persephone laughs at the silly thought. Back when she wasn't twenty-three, when she was just a teen and wanted to be a part of the Transformers world. Praying and doing all kinds of rituals that had her sighing in relief that no one witnessed it.

Otherwise, they would have her see a psychiatrist.

She remembered how she stood in the corner of family gatherings since she was reading a very, spicy smut. But looking back, all Persephone can do was laugh. Laugh at how absurd and silly she was. It was funny how she wanted to be a part of it.

But growing up, she had grown to accept it would never happen. That it was simply a form of escapism. A means of entertainment. It tugs at her heartstrings in a dull pain, but it was simply the truth.

And yet...

A part of her kept longing to experience that kind of adventure, somehow.

— ixi —

Persephone went back inside when the sun had fully revealed itself. She went down the ladder, gripping the metal sides tight. Making sure not to look down as she carefully placed her foot on the steps.

It was slow, but, at least, it was safe.

No matter how many times she had done this, she couldn't help but feel the fear of falling.

Once her feet reached the floor of the balcony, she sighed in relief. Persephone hadn't noticed her body was tensed until it had relaxed. Feeling a sense of joy, she danced a little for her victory. She went to the edge of the balcony to see of anything was out of place.

Seeing nothing, she pulled back.

With that she went inside and shut the door behind her. Making sure the locks are secured, she turned to leave. Glancing once more, before turning.

It was better safe than sorry.

Her steps were quiet as she walked down the hallway, making her way to the living room. Black faux fur was everywhere as her little creation lay half finished. She plopped down on the couch, letting out a sigh.

She wanted to finish her little abomination, but procrastination had already coaxed her into doing nothing as it poisoned her mind with empty promises of finishing her work later.

Persephone is aware that it's a lie, so she got up and wanders the house and towards her room. Listening to that little devil on her shoulder to just relax, she lost count how many times she had to "relax". Maria suddenly bursts from the guest room, duffle bag in hand as she left in a hurry.

"Where are you going?" Persephone asked, moving out of Maria's way and followed close behind her. What was the rush? Did an emergency happened?

Why was she in such a hurry?

"I have to go. One of the puppers were rushed into the vet." Maria says as she rushed to her car, quickly jamming the car keys in to unlock her vehicle. "She said it's because it got into a fight with a cat and my babies needs some support."

With a nod, Persephone understood. "Be safe and text me when you get there." Was all she said, before opening the gates of her abode and letting her sister's car back out into the main way.

"Hey, you be safe out here, okay?" Maria says, voice soft and gentle. "Keep on the look out, alright? I know you're more than capable of taking care of yourself, but you're my little sister and I don't want anything to happen to you since your house is like at the edge of town." Persephone could see her sister gripping the steering wheel.

She smiled.

"Don't worry, if anything, they should steer clear from me," Persephone reassured and Maria laughs, relaxing a little bit.

Maria grins. "Yeah, they should, you psycho."

"Alright, take care out there." She waves as the older woman rolls up her window and drives away. Once the car was far enough, Persephone closed the gates shut and made sure it was locked. Her legs swiftly took her inside and made sure the locks were secured before she headed to the kitchen.

A soft mewl made Persephone jump from her skin and swiftly turned around only to see a pair of adorable blue eyes that captivated her and the white and brown fur seemed softer than cotton.

"My goodness!" Persephone sighed in relief as she picked up the Ragdoll Feline. "Don't you ever scare me like that, Lilith. Please?" She all but coos at the cat in which it sucked up to her attention.

"Who's my little baby? Who is? Of course, it's you, my precious!" She giggles as the cat purrs when she scratched her chin.

Lilith was a little cat that Persephone had received from a friend. And oh boy, did she quickly grew attached to the little fur ball. To Persephone, Lilith was her little baby, the very thing she holds dear in her heart. She loved her dearly.

Without Lilith, Persephone would've been lonely. With her friends and family away for miles, it wouldn't have taken her long to be touch starved. However, since Lilith was around, Persephone didn't have to worry. She felt a sense of safety with the creature.

Something Persephone was thankful for.

Persephone, with Lilith still in her clutches, drank water from the kitchen before retreating to her room and made sure it was locked. It was merely precaution should someone break in, she'd be able to buy some time. It was a smart decision. Really.

Having a cat with her was comforting, especially since the last few days seemed to scare the young woman.

On her phone, which the outside camera surveillance was connected to, had spotted a figure—well, figures—near her area. The neighbours were an old married couple and their fifteen minutes away, so Persephone had scratched them out. At first, she thought nothing of it, but her paranoia kicked in when the same numbers of figures appeared and they seemed closer

Human figures that went so far as to go near her property.

Obviously, Persephone called the cops and they have an officer stationed, so the sightings seemed to decrease. However, that still put her on edge. It didn't hurt to be cautious. She didn't mind if she was overreacting.

Her safety was her priority.

She laid down into her cushions. The tap of something hitting the room had her looking up in an instant. One tap, then another, until it was accompanied by many. The unique, earthy scent she had sensed had told her that it was rain as the heavens continued to pour outside.

Oh, she forgot to close her windows.

"Strange, forecast says we wouldn't have chance of rainfall until next week." Persephone mutters as her hands stroked the sleeping feline on her torso.

She gently laid Lilith on the bed, before she walked towards the windows. Making sure that each and every bolt was locked. Persephone double-checked the locks. Once she was sure, she made her way back to her bed.

With the windows shut closed, the sound of rain was muffled. It was a hypnotizing tune to Persephone's ears as she placed Lilith back on her torso, the cat going back to sleep afterwards. It was cold and peaceful, the bed felt comforting as her hand that stroked the feline was gently resting on her fur and the other making random patterns on her bed.

Persephone hums a soft tune, as her eyelids felt heavy but fought against the darkness that appeared in her vision when she closed them. Not too long her eyes gave up, allowing her eyelids to drop. The tune dying in her throat as her breath slowed.

She succumbs to slumber.

ixi—

Persephone's eyes snapped open as she jolted awake, bolting right up frantically looking around as thunder had ripped her away from the thresholds of sleep. Why was it so dark? It didn't set too well for the young woman. The rain outside had turned into a thunderstorm.

Had she been asleep for the whole day?

She checked her phone and to her surprise it was only three in the afternoon. With how dark it was outside, Persephone wouldn't have been surprised had it actually been evening. Using her phone as a flashlight, she made her way to the light switch. Her hands touched the wall, gliding as her fingers searched for the switch, and once she found what she was looking for she flipped it.

Nothing.

Persephone was still in darkness. She flipped the switch again, but nothing happened.

"Even the power is out, huh?" She mutters to herself as she unlocked her bedroom door. Her stomach was starting to feel empty. A void is opening up from within and it won't be long before her stomach grumbles and demands to be fed.

"Lilith?" She calls out behind her, only realising that her little cat wasn't near her or on her torso when she had woken up. Pointing the light where her cat might have been.

"Meow."

She points the torch to her window seat. Upon the cushions, Persephone can vaguely see a familiar silhouette. Its tail wagging elegantly. A smile breaks through her face and she sighs in relief. "There you are, silly girl." Persephone said as she made her way to the window to scoop up the feline who gladly welcomed her embrace.

As Persephone sat, she looked out into the garden to check for anything out of the ordinary, but it was quite impossible since she barely had any light on her side and she doubts the flashlight of her phone could reach into forest. The gates of her garden backed straight into the impressive forest that she had loved so much, but now it only brought her a sense of fear. She didn't know what was out there. Her eyes couldn't see jack shit out there.

She didn't like it one bit.

Her hands stroked her cat's fur, Lilith purring in her lap as she did so. Heart racing as her eyes caught sight of someone standing outside within her garden. She turned off the flashlight from her phone and peered in the darkness. All the doors are locked and all the neighbours are probably cooped up inside in this weather, Persephone took a moment to remind herself this.

Still, her heart raced as she tried to make sense of the invader's figure at the edge of her garden. She had to keep glancing away to keep the fuzzy outline clear in her vision. They were standing very still.

Too still for Persephone's liking.

"Oh." Persephone said aloud as a flash of lightning illuminated the world outside for a brief second. It was the garden umbrella leaning up against the back fence. She smiled to herself, pleased that she didn't freak out too much.

A sigh of relief escapes her lips.

A growl startled Lilith and Persephone had looked to the source.

She had forgotten that she should be eating, at least. With that in mind, Persephone got up and walked out of the room with Lilith behind her. Using her phone as a flashlight once more, she navigated her way through her humble abode. Her feet silently padding across the floor.

"What to eat, what to eat?" Persephone mutters to herself as she opens her fridge. Deciding to cook some Cheese and Chives Chicken with rice, she made her preparations. Leaving the rice to cook in the rice cooker and the chicken in her air-fryer.

Lilith catches her attention by making noises.

She knew what that meant.

So, Persephone went to prepare her pet's meal. As she walked to serve the food, Lilith followed by and dug in the moment she planted the cat bowl.

"Oh, you poor thing, you must be starving!" Persephone coos as she stroked her cat whom didn't pay her much mind as Lilith vacuumed her plate clean.

Minutes passed and her own meal was ready to eat. Persephone, despite the food being hot, shoved it in her mouth. Regretting it later as she fanned her open mouth, but god was she starving. After getting used to it, she continued to finish her dish.

As she downed her iced tea, she noticed something outside.

A sense of dread hung over her head. Just as she was about to dismiss it, there was a white light. Something one would see only a flashlight would make. Keeping quiet, she watched it for a second.

Three lights followed after, moving as if surveying her living room.

Something was really off.

She didn't have any solar light torches outside. Not only that, her camera surveillance didn't emit that kind of light. The thought of checking her phone crossed her mind, but the power is out. Which meant the WIFI was out as well.

Which meant she couldn't access the cameras without electricity and she couldn't contact anyone.

Quietly, Persephone got up.

She made her way slowly as she picked up her cat. Lilith had all but wolfed down her food earlier anyways, so it was alright. However, even the cat herself seemed on alert as well. The young woman went upstairs and checked her phone.

No signal.

Persephone cursed underneath her breath but retreated down the hall near her room, which was where the telephone was. She picked it up and thanked God that it was working. Without wasting any time, she dialled the police. It rang for a second, but thankfully someone picked up.

"Hello nine one, one, what is your emergency?" The operator asked calmly on the other side of the line.

"This is the Villamora residence," Persephone gulped, trying to keep her cool. "There are people outside of my house and I think there's four of them. Please, help. I believe they're trying to get in." Her voice whimpers at the end.

"Okay, may I get your address?"

"Um it's zero, four twenty Violet Street in La Verde."

"I'm going to send a squad car your way, but with this weather it might take some delay." Her heart sank at the operator's response. Persephone cursed the weather and took a deep breath. She had to stay calm. Staying calm was a must in this situation.

However, she was this close to losing her shit.

The operator asked. "Ma'am, are you alone in your house?"

"Yes, I am."

"Can you confirm that all your doors and windows are locked? Stay on the phone with me."

With a deep breath, Persephone answered. "I'm sure that everything is locked, I made sure earlier." Lilith had decided to perch on her shoulder, the light was still surveying since Persephone can see flashes of it from where she stood. "I really appreciate your help, by the way. I know this seems bothersome, but I hope that—"

The lights got brighter, which only meant they were near her windows. This time, they were surveying the inside of her house, at least, what they can see. Her hands went cold and she had to wipe her palm on her night gown because they had gone sweaty. Her eyes wide as she kept her focus on the light.

She uttered a silent prayer, hoping they won't go in.

"Ma'am? Please, stay on with me. What is happening?"

The voice brought her back and Persephone informed the operator of what was happening. This was bad. This was so bad. Her voice cracked as fear took hold of her as she begged for them to hurry up.

The reassurance wasn't helping. The officers were on their way? How long will it be before they reach her? Her mouth kept blabbering and begging for help.

Her fingers gripped the phone as eyes kept on their focus. A lump was on her throat and all Persephone wanted was ball her eyes out.

The sound of glass shattering downstairs sent her into a panic.

"I'm going to hide. They've broken in. Please, hurry!" She begged and put down the phone, but didn't hung up. Persephone wasted no time as she rushed to lock herself and Lilith in her bedroom. Frantically bolting all the locks up as she rushed to block her door with her vanity mirror, her desks, and her wardrobe.

God, adrenaline is such a blessing.

Persephone ran to the side of her desk. She only had five bullets, it was only for emergency. It wasn't like she'd actually need it. She cursed herself for not listening to her friend's advice on taking at least a good number of bullets.

She cocked the gun, holding her ground in front of the door. Lilith was beside her, hissing at the door. "God or whatever higher being there is, if you truly exist, please, let me and my cat get through this alive." Persephone begged, eyes feeling warm as the edges blurred a little.

Moments later, nothing happened. She could hear footsteps here and there outside of her room. Persephone would let them steal anything if it meant it guaranteed her and her cat's safety. Then, the door handle jiggled.

"Hey, sweetie, we know you're all alone so it's best if you just quietly comply with us. We promise not to be rough on you." A gruff voice says on the other side. Pointing at the centre of the door, Persephone pulled the trigger.

"Please, take what you want! I don't have money or jewellery!" She begged. "Just take whatever you want, but leave me alone!"

She can hear various footsteps afterwards. "There's ten of us and one of you. Besides, we don't really want to end up in prison, so we have to make you… silent."

Her hands quivered but she knew when she needed to bolt it. Persephone set down the gun quietly. It wouldn't do much with how many they are. She opened her window and peeked down, her head immediately soaked as the rain seemed to pour like a shower. She grabbed Lilith, making sure she was secure.

She heard someone, a different person, curse before she heard the sound of a gun going off. She turned to see the door handle had been blown off. With that, Persephone jumped off the second floor, shielding Lilith with her body.

A gust of soft wind blew for a second, before her back hit the ground with a thud.

"We have to go!" Persephone says to Lilith, securing her in her grasp and taking off into the forest bare foot. She peeked behind her to see at least a handful of flashlight lights scoping the area where she had just been. That seemed to urge her to run.

Run as fast as her legs can carry her.

The forest blurred in her vision as adrenaline pumped in her veins, avoiding anything that might deter her speed. Jumping over rivers and skipping slippery rocks. Had this been on a normal occasion, Persephone would've been amazed at what she was capable of. But she doubts that she can do such feats without adrenaline pumping in her body.

The sound of gunfire behind her had her pushing her bodies to its limit.

Once she was sure that she had lost them, Persephone stopped. She caught her breath, setting Lilith down. She crouched down and said to her, "I don't know if you understand me, but go to our nearest neighbour. They would know something is wrong since you don't really like hanging out in their area." Stroking the fluffy feline lovingly.

"Get help," Persephone said, standing back up.

Lilith looked at her curiously before she rubbed her foot affectionately. With that, the cat ran off. Persephone smiled sadly. Hopefully, Lilith would be alright. Lilith's footsteps would probably be all washed away from the heavy rain since the Ragdoll cat was light on her paws. Even if they didn't, it was alright.

After all, they would follow human footsteps instead of a cat's if they did manage to see Lilith's tracks.

Persephone hauled her nightgown, which was now soaked, muddy and a little bit tattered at the ends. She held it to her waist, showing her underwear as the cold ruthlessly grasping her lower body. Without wasting time, she proceeded to run straight forward. "This fucking suck." She grumbled as she ran, the sound of a gun going off echoed in the woods.

She ran.

Ran.

And ran.

Her legs begged her to stop. It was cold and she was soaked. The trees barely helped since the rain was too strong. The forest floor underneath her was staring to get slippery.

Her body was giving up, her chest was starting to ache. Persephone was out of breath, the adrenaline in her veins was slowly, but surely losing its grip on her body. Just as she was about to give up, she saw something up ahead when lighting flashed and winced when the sound of thunder echoed.

Hope blossomed in her chest as she saw what was on the edge.

It seemed to be a clearing.

That little tinge of hope had her pushing and begging her body to use its energy to its limits. Once she can get into the clearing, there might be a road. Persephone can ask for help to any passing vehicles. Her luck was starting to turn.

A smile was breaking on her face.

Her whole body ached from exhaustion, but Persephone was filled with determination. She had to survive. There was room for survival, she'd gladly bite what her mouth can reach. Besides, she refused to die so easily.

She didn't want to die.

So, Persephone ran once more. Eyes focused on the area where she planned to go. The moment she broke free from the woods, she whooped in joy. She sighed in relief, but stopped dead in her tracks as another cackle of lighting appeared.

"No." She uttered.

There in front of her was a cliff.

Persephone felt her limbs turn into jelly as she dropped on her knees in dismay. She gulped as she peeked on the edge. It was a long drop and she couldn't see anything below. It wasn't dark, but the mist below restricted her sights.

And so, she cried.

She wailed in anger as warm tears fell from her eyes despite her body being cold. This wasn't fair. It wasn't fair at all. The voices of men shouting were growing near and she can clearly see the faint white light at the distance. Fuck, she shouldn't have screamed.

And for that she paid the price.

Persephone took in a deep breath, rubbing her eyes with her fists angrily. She scooted over the edge, enough to fall over if she wanted to. She didn't dare look down, again. Persephone knew that if she did, she'd chicken out.

With a single curse towards God, she closed her eyes and allowed herself to fall backwards into the mist.

With her eyes shut, the cold wind blew past her as a scream tore its way out of her lips. Her body, in an instinct to save itself, reached out into the open air. As if that would save her from her impending doom. Once, she passed the mist, the sound of familiar roaring can be heard.

A river?

She glanced to her side, from what she can see through her hair. Indeed, there was a river. And, oh boy, it sure was nearing fast. Her screams were drowned out by the raging waters beneath her as she grew closer and closer. Persephone knew the river would be up on her soon and her untimely death would be imminent.

Please… save me, Persephone thought.

She was engulfed in cold water; her body was too tired to swim. The pain started at her back before spreading throughout her entire body.

She wanted to scream, but bubbles only floated to the surface as she sank. Water filled her lungs and her throat ached at the action.

Her vision became fuzzy as black spots started to appear.

Everything hurts. Her whole body demanded oxygen, but she didn't have the strength for it. She closed her eyes and gave in.

And Persephone knew no more.
